Structureaugmentation, a loss or a gain, may seem for the moment somewhatperplexing; but it would be even more perplexing if man were only acreature of earth and heaven. Since he is more than this - and, becausequantitative terms are irrelevant here, we could also say: less than this -we could perhaps, in the further course of our discussion, extricate thisstate of affairs from its dualistic cul-de-sac or, in mental terms, itsstatement of gains and losses, particularly as we will be able to verify anumber of inceptions including some that free us from the compulsion ofdualism. If we are to summarize in a third grouping those aspects which can bringus a step further toward resolving the questions that have arisen, thiscross-section will have to make evident what we have designated as the"Potentialities of the Structures." To the extent that these arepotentialities which consciousness opens up through its mutations, wemust be aware of the particular aspects of world with which the respectivepotentialities of consciousness associate, that is, which aspect takes onthe nature of consciousness for a given structure. In addition we must alsobecome aware of the energy - the movement and dynamism - which is theagent or initiator in man of the particular consciousness emergence. If wedo this, we can in mental terms note the particular accentuations ofconsciousness in the familiar categories of subject and object which resultin the following cross-section (the ascriptions in parentheses cannot bediscussed until later):5.
