Participants will stay in furnished apartment suites inthe area which include a bath, kitchen, sitting area, TV, andwireless access.Extra Activities<strong>The</strong> following activities are included in the course fees: arrivaland departure dinner reception, ballet performance atthe Terme di Caracalla, and two movie nights at the cinema.InstructorsGiovanna Carloni teaches the culture component <strong>of</strong> theseminar. She teaches graduate level courses within theMaster’s program Teaching Italian to Foreigners at the<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Urbino, Italy. She holds an M.A. in Second/Foreign Language Teaching Methodology: Teaching Italianas a Second/Foreign Language from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>Venice Ca’ Foscari and an M.A. in Italian from Ohio State<strong>University</strong>. She has published extensively on second/foreignlanguage teaching with a focus on Second/ForeignLanguage Acquisition, CLIL (Content and Language IntegratedLearning), learning styles, and online learning.Rosemonde Gurtner teaches the technology component<strong>of</strong> the seminar. She is a member <strong>of</strong> the Adjunct Facultyin the Department <strong>of</strong> Italian Studies at AUR. She holdsan M.A. in Applied Language and New Technology fromHull <strong>University</strong> in UK and the CEDILS (Certificazione inDidattica Dell’Italiano a Stranieri) Certification from the<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Venice Cà Foscari. Since 2001 she has beenactive in her field <strong>of</strong> specialization by serving in the followingpositions: Lecturer and Instructional Designer inthe Linguistic Center at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Trieste, Collaboratorwith AICLU (Associazione Italiana Centri LinguisticiUniversitari) and Didactic and Editorial Consultant forAlma Edizioni.Flavia Laviosa teaches the methodology component <strong>of</strong> theseminar. She is Senior Lecturer in the Department <strong>of</strong> ItalianStudies at Wellesley College. She holds a Ph.D. in ForeignLanguage Education from SUNY Buffalo. Her worldwidetraining <strong>of</strong> foreign language teachers has earned herinternational recognition as a Teacher Educator, Supervisor,and Curriculum Consultant. Her approach combinesHumanistic and Cognitive theories with Communicativeprinciples <strong>of</strong> foreign language pedagogy. She has been activeas an internationally certified Italian Oral and WritingPr<strong>of</strong>iciency Trainer, Tester for ACTFL, Test Consultantand Curriculum Developer for the Italian AP.Seminar Director and CoordinatorCatherine Ramsey-Portolano is Chair <strong>of</strong> the Department<strong>of</strong> Italian Studies at <strong>The</strong> <strong>American</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Rome</strong>. She holds a Ph.D. in Italian from <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong><strong>of</strong> Chicago. She teaches Italian language, literature andculture courses at AUR. Her principal areas <strong>of</strong> researchare Nineteenth and Twentieth-century Italian womenwriters, representations <strong>of</strong> women in Italian literatureand film and gender studies.
