OBO and AckermannTwo successstoriesOBO BETTERMANN and ACKERMANN have similarcorporate cultures. Both can reflect on almost a century ofcompany history. Andreas Bettermann, a fourth generationOBO BETTERMANN manager, explained this commonground at the first employee meeting at ACKERMANNimmediately after the buyout. His great-grandfather, Franz Bettermann, founded OBO in1891 in Menden, in Germany’s Sauerland region. AlbertAckermann came across similar circumstances when hestarted his company in 1919. Over the decades thatfollowed, the two companies followed their individual paths:ACKERMANN developed to become a specialist for modernoffice electrical infrastructure, OBO took a similar path inindustry and electrical installation material. Both organisations enjoyed positive development in themarket during these years. They have known and respectedeach other for generations. As a result of selective productportfolio expansion in future-proof fields, OBO even becameone of ACKERMANN’s competitors. “Yet this didn’t lessenour respect for the competition”, explains Andreas Bettermann.“The result was a high regard for product quality, preliminary marketing and service.”2001 was an eventful year for both companies. UlrichBettermann made his sons Andreas and Thomas shareholdersand handed them the reins of responsibility, which istoday shared in the Group with Markus Arens. ACKERMANNwas sold and after 80 years of tradition, was transferred as afamily-run business to a British group. “At the time, this newscame as a surprise”, recalls Andreas Bettermann. “Had weknown of the intention to sell, we could have been interested, especially as it looked like ACKERMANN, with over 1,000employees, had grown too big for us.”4 Blick 1/2006

think orange. think connected.Think orange: energy and enjoymentOBO, ACKERMANN and DAHLKANAL are not just united under oneroof, but now also in one colour: orangeis the corporate colour of the OBOBettermann Group. Orange combinesthe energy of red and the enjoyment ofyellow. Orange stands for enthusiasm, creativity and attraction, and symbolisesbeauty, vitality, independence andexhilaration. That’s according to ad men and colourpsychologists, anyway. The trendsettershave already convinced ZDF, the CDUand Boss Sportswear. OBO Bettermannneeded no such convincing. Itscorporate colour has always beenorange. No wonder that in the experts’opinions, this colour has gainedpopularity in recent years and, in 2002,was even chosen as the colour of theyear. The name comes from the citrus fruit, which first came to Europe from Indiavia Arabia. It became fashionable in16th century Europe to grow orangetrees and let them winter in orangeries.Ever since then, orange has appearedon the European colour scale. Up untilthe 20th century, orange played arather minor role in Germany. In hisfamous psychological theory ofcolours, the genius poet Goethe wrote:“Here, the active side has its mostenergy and it’s no wonder that energetic, healthy people have a particular love ofthis colour.” Of course, it wasn’tGoethe’s theory that the population at6 Blick 1/2006

think orange. think connected.CABLE MANAGEMENTlarge felt a tendency toward orangethat we at OBO took as a benchmarkfor the choice of this colour. The fact, too, that in Buddhism orangesymbolises the highest level of humanenlightenment played, at best, aperipheral role.At Light + Building in Frankfurt amMain, the DAHL and ACKERMANNbrands will be orange, the colour ofenergy and enjoyment. Apart from thecommon colour for all companies andbrands under the OBO BETTERMANNroof, early 2006 posed a host of otherchallenges. OBO BETTERMANN andACKERMANN reorganised the salesstructure. Managing Partner AndreasBettermann holds worldwide responsibilityfor Sales/Marketing/ProductManagement. As Managing Director,Markus Arens looks after Technology,Logistics, Materials Management andService. Karl-Frank Ulrich is in chargeof Sales Germany for the entire Group.OBO BETTERMANN responded to theincreased demands of both customerand market in 2005 by appointingadditional sales engineers who areemployed in all regions to support fieldservice, branch managers anddivisional sales managers.Blick 1/20067

BSS Fire protection systemsFire protectioninstalled underfloor and in cable routing ducts: OBO Bettermann offersflexibility and versatilityThe growing need for the flexible use ofbuildings and office areas is calling forcomplex solutions. Underfloor andcable routing systems (Ackermann andOBO) are extremely flexible, diverseand safe.Dividing walls can be moved aroundvery quickly to change room layouts. Itis not usually necessary to touch theinstallation in the underfloor system. The installation is quickly modifiedthanks to the plastic or metal deviceinstallation ducts. However, if the dividing walls also havea fire protection function or are separatedby two fire lobbies, the electricalinstallation must be fireproof. OBOBettermann offers a number of differentcable insulation systems that suitthese applications. For example,FBA-B foam blocks are used in underfloorinstallations in in-screed floorflushducts. The ideal solution forscreed-covered systems, however, isthe new OBO FBA-2K.The same goes for arranging deviceinstallation ducts through separatingwalls. The new type FBA-BK fireprotection foam blocks help to preventthe passage of fire and smoke. Thelittle brother of the FBA-B is designedspecifically for the conditions in bothmetal and plastic device installationducts. All fire insulation systems are tested toDIN 4102, Part 9, and approved forthese applications. The fire resistanceperiod is 90 minutes in each case.Simple retrofitting is possible at anytime.26 Blick 1/2006

In Germany, the penetration rate of the electricalwholesale trade is almost 90 per cent.According to Andreas Bettermann,OBO would prefer it to be more but notall its products are suitable for theelectrical wholesale trade. All VEG delegates were also inspiredby the event’s programme. OBO in-houseOne would easily recognise even his handwriting with its fine, flowing linesamong hundreds of others. It is not only easy to read, it is simplybeautiful. That’s what many find when viewing drawings and watercoloursby Jürgen Meyer-Andreaus. A learned architect and town planner, he alsoworked abroad as a university professor and was a Bavarian ApprovedMaster Builder. Since 1988, he has devoted his time to paintingwatercolours. He recently joined OBO BETTERMANN as company artist.Company artist at OBOThe 71-year-old painter from Munichdoes not find this description disrespectful.“This is a multifaceted company, where both you and I can find aplethora of themes”, says Meyer-Andreaus. It was Paul Schüpstuhl, anarchitect from Wickede, Germany, whobrought company and artist together. The architect and the OBO managementhit upon the idea to bring new lifeto its Menden-based administrationbuilding at OBO’s headquarters. Butthe inspiration still had to be found. And found it quickly was, in the form ofMeyer-Andreaus. Since March 2005,he has sat many times at the peripheryof OBO Production and recorded withpencil and brush scenes from theday-to-day activities of this electricalsystem and building technology manufacturer.Watercolours make a real impressionwhere most others would hangphotos. Thirteen such watercolours areplanned for OBO BETTERMANN, nineof which are ready. The idea to adornthe administration building with imagesfrom OBO Production is now moving inwider circles: all the works from thisartist will be collated as a calendar tocommemorate OBO’s centenary in2011, which employees, customersand partners of the company canenjoy.Jürgen Meyer-Andreaus connectsattention to detail with OBO BETTER-MANN. “No crane ever evades me”,explained the artist in an interview atOBO during a painting sojourn inMenden. He sees manufacturingtechnology and sentimental painting asa consciously created contrast ratherthan a contradiction. The artisticformula is born from this contrast:every good watercolour must havecontrasts – light to dark, big to small, dense to loose and small area to largearea. This creates unmistakable images.“It’s not perception that fools us, butsometimes understanding”, says theartist.Jürgen Meyer-Andreaus likes totheorise, the tendency to consider theworld in the background and philosophicallyis to him neither alien nor futile. He can not only create beautifulpaintings, he can also say beautifulthings. “There is no final lesson in theschool of life.” “The eye sees, what itseeks.” Or he can quote the maximused by the Italian composer GuiseppeVerdi: “Do, what others have not yetdone.” Yet Jürgen Meyer-Andreaus hasno time for the tomfoolery that wickedcontemporaries suppose in artists dreamsand dream artists. He is athoroughly down-to-earth man, albeitone with world experience. With his love of technical and maritimethemes, precision and attention todetail, he is now a much sought-afterpainting instructor. He offers one andfour-day courses in several Germancities, and is also engaged by hotelsand cruise ships to confront the public, spoiled by all kinds of diversification, with new challenges. A little painting ordrawing experience is desirablealthough not a requirement.
