YOUTH AND CHILDREN
Dependent members and guests under 18 years of age must enter
the facility with an adult/guardian and that adult/guardian must
remain in the facility while it is being used by the dependant/minor.
The following guidelines apply to youth and children:
• Dependents and guests under 18 years of age are not permitted
in weight rooms, fitness areas, sauna or classes.
• Children under 16 years of age must be directly supervised by
an adult at all times.
• Children 4 years of age and older are not permitted in opposite
sex locker rooms. Family changing rooms are available in both
facilities.
Complimentary towel service is provided as part of membership
to the Pottruck and Fox Fitness Centers. The following guidelines
apply:
facilities. Please respect your fellow members and minimize the
possibility of disease transmission by placing towels in bins,
and not on the floor.
• Individuals are not permitted to keep Department of Recreation
issued towels in their lockers. The Department of Recreation
reserves the right to retrieve towels from lockers. Individuals
found to be storing Department of Recreation towels in their
to members for locker use. The following guidelines apply for daily
use lockers:
(tan lockers) and throughout hallways.
• Individuals are required to bring their own lock. The Department
of Recreation does not provide locks for rental.
• Members are prohibited from placing items in a day locker and
leaving the facility. ‘Reserving’ a locker while not in the building
and/or failing to clean your locker out at close of the facility will
result in a $40.00 recovery fee for items.
• Coin operated lockers are available in the hallways on the 3rd
and 4th floors.
• The Division of Public Safety has indicated that “Unattended
Theft” is the number one crime reported on campus. When
SHEERR POOL GUIDELINES
The Sheerr Pool is open for recreational swim during the posted hours.
It is recommended to check the Department of Recreation website
on a regular basis for updated information in regards to altered pool
hours. The following guidelines apply while using the pool:
• The use of the Sheerr Pool and on-deck sauna is prohibited unless
supervised by a Department of Recreation lifeguard. Lifeguards
have final authority on all matters in the pool area.
• Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied to the pool
and be directly supervised by an adult parent/guardian at all
times. If the child can swim, the adult parent/guardian must be at
the pool side. If the child cannot swim, the adult parent/guardian
must be in the water with his or her child. Children that are not
potty-trained must wear waterproof diapers, such as Swimmers.
• Appropriate swimming attire is required. Thongs and street
clothes are prohibited. Please use the locker room facilities to
change, not the bleachers.
• The pool temperature will be kept at 79 degrees from September
through February.
From March to August, the pool will be kept at 82 degrees.
• Circle swimming is required when more than two swimmers are
in lane. Circle swimming in a lap lane is similar to driving a car;
you need to stay on the right side of the lanes at all times and
swim in a counterclockwise direction.
• Lanes in Sheerr Pool are designated for slow, medium, and fastpaced
swimmers. Know who you are and what you are capable
of doing as a swimmer. Please choose a lane where fellow
swimmers are at a similar skill level as yours. If you are unsure of
which lane to use, please feel free to ask the lifeguard.
• The amount of equipment that can enhance your workout is
endless. When stopping to put equipment on or take equipment
off, be aware of others and take care not to interrupt others while
they are swimming.
PENN CLUB SPOTLIGHT
• Lane lines are expensive. Please do not hang on the lane lines
between sets or after workouts.
• Showers are required before entering the pool.
• Always enter the water feet first. Make sure you are aware of the
water depth and others swimming while entering or exiting the pool.
• Teaching lessons for personal gain is not permitted.
SAUNA GUIDELINES
• The Pottruck Center houses a dry sauna at the Sheerr Pool.
• The sauna is open during recreational swim hours only.
• Pouring water on the sauna rocks or tampering with the heat
sensor is prohibited.
• The sauna is kept at 160 degrees.
• Proper attire is required to use the sauna; boxers do not
constitute proper attire.
• Patrons should not consume any alcoholic beverages prior to
entering the Sauna as this practice can be hazardous to your
health.
The University of Pennsylvania’s Club Tennis Team competed at the USTA’s Tennis on Campus National Championship the
weekend of April 14th. The tournament began with pool play and the UPenn team had a scarily close first match with Purdue,
which UPenn won by only one game in overtime! Luckily the team moved through its next match against Texas State University
with a higher margin –winning 27 to 15 games. Unfortunately the team fell in a close match to University of California at
Berkley, a past champion of the event. As a result of the team’s tough play, we moved on to compete in the Silver bracket for
the rest of the tournament. While there we defeated Marquette University and Southern Methodist University, but fell to Texas
A&M (a past champion) and UCLA (the defending champion). Ultimately UPenn placed 23rd at the Championship, a result
the team was very pleased with considering they only lost matches to California or Texas teams that had previously won the
tournament. Go Quakers!

improving your quality of life through healthy eating habits.
SPORT CLUBS
Those who desire sport club membership seek regular participation under a more
coherent design than offered by informal or intramural activities.
ELIGIBILITY
Students make up the majority of those participating on Penn Sport Club teams;
however, full-time faculty and staff are also eligible to participate on a club team.
All sport club teams at the University of Pennsylvania are “recognized student
organizations” and therefore will keep an affiliation with the Office of Student Life.
STARTING A NEW CLUB
Funding constraints and the lack of additional available facilities require that a
moratorium be placed on the acceptance of any new sport clubs at this time. This
number denotes the minimum level of exertion for the trip however
most trips provide options for participants to challenge themselves
sign up for, and as to what to expect before leaving for an outing.
How to record your workouts
When you enroll, you choose a primary method of recording your workouts: an
automated system available at PennRec (recommended) or a computer printout
from your fitness facility.
Use the recording method that will work best for you (for other options visit ibx.
com).
Record workouts using the automated system
You can record your workouts through an automated system on a phone designated
by the Pottruck Center.
Here’s how:
1. Find the phone, which is located to the left of the climbing wall. A PennRec
employee can direct you.
2. Dial 1-800-971-3182.
3. Speak or enter the numeric portion of your identification number found on your
health plan ID card. (Do not enter the alpha prefix or suffix.)
4. When prompted, speak or enter the four-digit personal identification number you
chose when you enrolled in the Fitness Program.
5. The system will verify the number of workouts you have recorded.
6. After you complete 120 workouts, you won’t need to record workouts again
until your anniversary date, when we will automatically reenroll you in the Fitness
Program. If the automated system is not operational, document your workout on a
manual log sheet provided to PennRec in case of system failure.
