S E C T I O N 3INTERPRETING THE SWEAT TEST3.3 Diagnostic RangesNormal = 0 to 60 mmol/L*Equivocal = 61 to 80 mmol/L*CF = above 80 mmol/L**equivalent NaClUsing the data displayed in Fig 1, which showboth sweat rate and conductivity variation withtime after stimulation, the Nanoduct averagedvalue (over period C) was obtained (46 mmol/L).This can be compared with the value (47 mmol/L)that would theoretically have been obtained usinga Macroduct-obtained mixed sweat yield over 30minutes, the standard collection time used in theclinical trial that provided the basic results for theselection of the currently-established normal,equivocal, and CF diagnostic ranges. It is clearthat the Nanoduct results may confidently be evaluatedwith reference to these ranges, for childrenunder 16 years of age, normal 0 to 60 mmol/L,equivocal 61 to 80 mmol/L, and CF above 80mmol/L. (equivalent NaCl).In non-CF adults, the normal range is frequentlyextended into the equivocal levels, but never sufficientlyto provide false positive diagnosis.28
S E C T I O N 3INTERPRETING THE SWEAT TEST3.4 Initial Sweating RateOne advantage of the unique continuous-flowsensing device of the Nanoduct System is that itallows computation of the initial sweating rate. Thevolume of the sensor channel from the first electrodeto the second electrode contact is preciselyknown, as is the collecting surface area. After thesensor is attached to the arm, the time taken forthis volume to be filled with sweat is measured bythe Induction/Analysis module.Applying an algorithm with the fill time as the solevariable allows a display of the initial sweating ratein the conventionally accepted units of grams persquare meter of skin surface per minute. Thisdatum is available when the first reading is displayedon the continuous record of conductivity.29
