Page 6 THE WESTCHESTER GUARDIAN THURSDAY, november 15, 2012CULTURAL PERSPECTIVESTahara-FGMContinued from page 5of eliminating the circumcision sceneso she could shoot on location. Whenshe consulted with him, Sheltonencouraged her to follow her vision, never give up and fight for it at all costs. He said, “if I compromised my visionat that early stage of my career, then itwould be full of compromises later on.But if I found the courage to keep thescene, it would eventually pay off.”Because obtaining shootingpermits and a green light for the scriptwas impossible to obtain in Egypt,Sara eventually moved the actionto Los Angeles in order to have fullcreative control. “The main difficultyI faced was going through the processof having my script read by the censorwhile abroad in Egypt. Because wedidn’t have the same process of censorshipin the US, it was truly dauntingfor me, to censor your mind and yourideas, and in the end, I suppose, youractions,” she shared.Casting was also very difficult, because there aren’t a lot of MiddleEastern actors in Los Angeles, andEgyptians in particular. I had todo an open call audition as well asattend many Arabic events within thecommunity. At one point, I thoughtof casting entirely non-professionalsto get an authentic Egyptian feeling.I had cast the film with a mixture ofactors who were of Arab descent andspoke Arabic but the dialects were notcolloquial Egyptian”, she said.Several weeks before the filmingbegan, Egyptian actress CarolineKhalil, came to Los Angeles on aFulbright scholarship. Khalil andRashad were introduced by a mutualfriend, Hesham Issawi, the Egyptiandirector of T for Terrorist, AmericanEast, and Cairo Exit. “As soon as I satdown with her at a local coffee shopfor but one moment, I knew I hadfound Amina. “After a quick readingaudition, she landed the part”, remembersSara. Caroline Khalil would lateron became a known starlette of televisionand film.Tahara has been well received inthe USA, Europe, and Egypt. SaraRashad has been very busy touringwith the film in festivals whenever shecan. The most exciting festival was theNigerian International Film Festival, where the film took a prize for BestInternational Short, because FGMis still an African issue. It was a greathonor. Also, the Pan African FilmFestival in Los Angeles, where Taharaalso earned a prize for Best AfricanShort Film.Born in Cairo, Egypt, Sherif Awad is afilm / video critic and curator. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTTo Move or Not Move New Rochelle’s City YardContinued from page 8information. He added, “This isnot transparency in government.”Mayor Noam Bramson apologized, saying that he would “take responsibility”because he sought input, butthat it would not matter because heexpected everything to be presentedthat evening at the special meeting.City Manager Chuck Stromefollowed by explaining the threeoptions that needed to be consideredin moving the City Yard asthey related to the Echo Bay project:(1) construct a new City Yard onBeechwood Avenue, (2) modernizethe current Main Street site, or (3)do nothing for a few years. Stromerecalled that, back in February,2012, the City Council authorizeda bond resolution for the design ofa new City Yard at the BeechwoodAvenue site. Then, in April, aconsultant submitted preliminaryestimates of $16 million to renovatethe present City Yard and $13million to prepare the Beechwoodsite. Since that time, the estimateshave increased to $19 million for theMain Street site and $24.4 millionfor the Beechwood site. Stromesuggested not doing anything “is apoor option”.Former Commissioner ofDevelopment Michael Freimuthattended the City Council meetingto detail preliminary terms andconditions for the FCR Echo BayHISTORYTHE WESTCHESTER GUARDIAN THURSDAY, november 15, 2012Project. He had both positive andnegative comments. On the positiveside, Freimuth said FCR would payNew Rochelle $2.5 million for theproperty and $1 million for buildingpermit fees. FCR would also pay$18 million over 20 years in refusefees. According to Freimuth, a smallnumber of jobs would be createdand some sales tax revenue would begenerated. On the negative side, hesaid, FCR would ask for tax abatementsand a PILOT (payment inlieu of taxes), which is currentlycalculated to cover school costs foran estimated 22 students at the rateof $17,500 per student, increasingby an inflation factor each year. Thecost to New Rochelle of moving theCity Yard must also be considered.Mayor Bramson then askedthe Councilmembers how theywanted to proceed that evening.Councilman Lou Tranguccisuggested a “small discussion”.Tarantino quickly stated, “If ForestCity does not go forth, we wouldnot expend any funds.” But Stromebrought up the “up front payment”from the developer as a sweetener.Councilwoman Shari Rackmanasked if these numbers are accurate. She wanted to know whathappens if FCR’s environmentalremediation of Echo Bay costs $4million instead of the projected $3million. Freimuth responded thatremediation is FCR’s problem.Jack Reed and Louise BryantA Senatorial InquisitionBy ROBERT SCOTTThe year 1919opened withAmerican troopsbogged down inSiberia as part ofan allied intervention during thecivil war that followed the RussianRevolution. The Senate announced thathearings would begin on February11 to investigate Bolhevik propaganda.Sen. Henoted that the new report does notdelve into the costs of remediatingthe Beechwood site or that additionalpolice and fire services wouldbe needed. As a result of the bondingand the insufficiency of the PILOT,the City would incur an additionalfinancial burden of $900,000 peryear. Trangucci observed that theCity will see no positive financialbenefit until the bond debt ispaid off. Finally, Trangucci wantedto know who determined the $5million land value of the presentCity Yard, which he asserts shouldbe valued at $10 million. Freimuthresponded by saying the value isbased on unit housing costs in thearea. At that point Mayor Bramsonsaid the Council did not have tomake a “judgment on Echo Bay,”but it had to make a decision onthe City Yard. Trangucci disagreed, advising that each decision wasdependent on the other and couldnot be considered independent ofthe other. Councilman Jared Riceasked about the size reduction ofthe City Yard at Beechwood andwhether service would improve.Strome and Tergis side-steppeda direct response with a commentabout the present City Yard’s operationalinefficiencies and opined overthe prospect of sewer and drainwalls that are “ready to collapse.” Adiscussion of grants and fundingsources for remediating problems atthe present City Yard followed.Councilman Ivar Hyden asked,“Shouldn’t we have this (financial)information before we move theCity Yard?” Strome basically ignoredthe question and responded, “Bondsmust be issued this year” to movethe City Yard. When CouncilmanBarry Fertel wanted to know whatwould happen if the City Yard wasnot moved now, Tergis said maintenancecosts would go up.As the session ended, Bramsoninsisted that a choice between developmentand fiscal responsibility was“wrong, wrong, wrong.” He saidhe viewed development and fiscalresponsibility as moving in tandemalong the same track and direction. He said he has never seen aperfect development and insistedthat a decision must be made onNovember 13 th .Peggy Godfrey is a freelance writer,a community activist, and formereducator.Three of the five members of the Overman Committee in 1919 duringhearings: Senator Josiah Oliver Wolcott (D-Del.), Chairman LeeSlater Overman (D-N.C.), Senator Knute Nelson (R-Minn.)Page 9Rdg Plyhs Westchester Guardian nov_Layout 1Ann Hampton CallawaySings the Streisand SongbookFri, Nov 16Multiplatinum selling singersongwriterand actress, celebrating one of America’smost enduring artists,Barbra Streisand.Doyle Coffin ARCHiteCtUReSinGeR SonGwRiteR SeRieSRock SeRieSRock SeRieSUnderwritten byRidgefield PrimePartially Underwrittenby Albano Appliances,Best Cellars andHB GroupCLARKCONSTRUCTIONCOMEDY SERIESBroadway & CaBaretSerieSDoyle Coffin ARCHiteCtUReSinGeR SonGwRiteR SeRieSBroadway & CaBaret SerieSKarla Bonoff andSteve ForbertSaturday, November 17A night of hits including All Mylife, Personally, Someone tolay Down Beside Me andRomeo’s tune.Musical Box: The LambLies Down on BroadwaySunday, November 18A CAn’t MiSS SHow!Peter Gabriel-era Genesis Re-creationShow under the lamb liesDown on Broadway.Video Games Live withTommy TallaricoSaturday, December 1Featuring the Western Connecticut YouthOrchestra and The Ridgefield Choralethe excitement of a rock concertmixed with video games, special fxand audience participation!Food Network StarChef Robert Irvine LIVE!Sunday, December 2Please join us in the lobby at 7:15pmfor a wine tasting from Best Cellars!ViP tickets Available! includes backstageaccess and special cookingdemonstrations!SinbadThursday, December 6Partially Underwritten by Gardella'sElite LimosineHe doesn’t deliver punch lines –he slam dunks them!Debbie Gravitte & FriendsAll-Star Holiday ShowFriday, December 14Celebrate the holidays withDebbie and her friends, includingsome broadways pals fromthe hit show Phantom of theopera and more!Eric HutchinsonSun, December 16With Special Guest Jessie Payowith his chart topping hitwatching you watch HimThe RidgefieldPlayhouse80 East Ridge, Ridgefield, CT • (203)438-5795www.ridgefieldplayhouse.org

Page 10 THE WESTCHESTER GUARDIAN THURSDAY, november 15, 2012HISTORYJack Reed and Louise BryantContinued from page 9Reed and Bryant had wiredSenator Overman offering to testify aswitnesses but received no reply. On Sunday afternoon, February2, Louise was in Washington for anappearance at Poli’s Theater at 15thStreet and Pennsylvania Avenue. Afterher talk, she remained in Washingtonand managed to get arrested in frontof the White House. She was releasedfollowing a brief hunger strike.Louise attended the hearings andlistened to a series of friendly witnesses.During a recess she confronted thechairman and demanded to be heard. He promised to tell her the next daywhen she would be called to testify, butfailed to keep his promise.Only after she stood up during ahearing, identified herself and publiclydemanded that her testimony bescheduled was she called before theOverman Committee. She testified fortwo days as the first unfriendly witness, starting on February 20.Bryant’s treatment during hertestimony initiated the practice ofcongressional witch-hunting thatwould culminate in the discreditedHouse Un-American ActivitiesCommittee under J. Parnell Thomasand Sen. Joe McCarthy’s ArmedServices Committee hearings in the1950s.InquisitionThroughout her testimonyOverman Committee members wereboth bullying and belligerent. Atthe outset, they grilled her at lengthabout her belief in God. Althoughshe admitted that she believed inthe sanctity of an oath, Senator Kingpressed on, stating. “A person who hasno conception of God does not haveany idea of the sanctity of an oath, andan oath would be meaningless,” heinsisted.Unsatisfied with her concessionof belief that there was a God, she wasasked by Senator Wolcott whether shebelieved “in a punishment hereafterand a reward for duty.” An exasperatedLouise Bryant responded, “Itseems to me as if I were being tried forwitchcraft. Very well, I will concede--Iconcede there is a hell.”Senator King asked Louise whereshe stayed in Washington. She toldhim that it was at the headquarters ofthe National Women’s Party, a militantsuffragist group. He asked whether shebelonged to the NWP “picket squad”that had actively picketed the WhiteHouse. She responded, “I do not knowwhat that has to do with the truthabout Russia, but I did. I believe inequality for women as well as men, even in my own country.”“We want to know somethingabout the character of the person whotestifies,” he told her, “so that we candetermine what credit to give to theirtestimony.”Under further questioning bySenator Nelson, she admitted thatshe took part in the burning of thepresident in effigy, an act for whichshe was jailed. After probing questionsabout her first and second marriages,Senator King asked if she participatedin Bolshevik meetings. She repliedthat she took notes at such meetings,as other reporters did.She was asked about Jack Reed’semployment by the Bolsheviks.Holding copies of propaganda documentsprinted in German, Louiseproudly admitted that her husbanddid a lot in Russia to bring about theabdication of the Kaiser.Senator Nelson maintained thathe wanted facts. Bryant insisted thepapers she was holding were thefacts. Nelson cautioned her: “Don’tbe so impertinent.” When spectatorsapplauded, the chairman warned thathe would clear the room if the noisewas repeated. It was and he did. Louiserefused to testify in a closed session. After about an hour, spectators wereallowed to return, with an admonitionagainst “cheering.”Senator Overman asked about herlecture at Poli’s Theater. “Its purposewas to protest against interventionin Russia.” she explained. “I, as anAmerican, believing in self-determination,cannot believe in intervention.I do not see how we can fight fordemocracy in France and against itin Siberia. I believe we ought to takeour troops out of Russia. It would bebetter for both nations to have friendlyrelations.”Senator Nelson demanded toknow whether she was “anxious” forthe Bolsheviks to remain in power.“I am anxious—” she began.“Answer my question,” SenatorNelson interrupted. “Are you anxiousto have the Bolshevik governmentthere as a permanent thing?” hethundered.Louise replied calmly, “I think theRussians ought to settle that.”He posed the question again, andshe replied, “I answered you. I said Ibelieved in self-determination.”“Self-determination at the pointof a gun?” he asked.“All governments have had to beself-determined at the point of a gun. There never has been the governmentestablished except after a war,” was herreply. When the hearing opened thenext day, Louise Bryant asked thechairman to be allowed “to speak awhole sentence before this committeewithout being interrupted.” Heassented. She criticized the hearings, pointing out that previous witnesseswho did not support the revolutionwere allowed to talk at length, butshe was not allowed to answer questionsfully. She had been treated like “atraitor,” she charged.Chairman Overman told herpatronizingly: “You seem to want tomake a martyr of yourself, when youhave not been treated unfairly that Ican see. You’re a woman and you donot know anything about the conductof an examination such as we have inhand here. We’re going to treat youfairly and treat you as a lady.”Louise’s answer has become aclassic: “I don’t want to be treated asa lady, but I want to be treated as ahuman being.”She wanted the record to showthat she believed she had been “lecturedat” and subjected to “a sort of thirddegree” by Senator Nelson. She wastold by Senator Sterling, “You were notgiven lectures. You were cross-examined.”Senator Nelson described her as“deluded,” adding, “You are young, too,and I feel sorry for you.”The chairman declared that as ajudge on the bench in Utah the senatorfrequently had before him witnesseswho were charged with having no faithin the Christian religion. Bryant counteredby asking, “How would you havetreated me if I had been a Jew?”Jack Reed followed Louise as awitness. His answers were crisp andclear. The committee obviously had nodesire to tangle with him, and he wasallowed to depart quickly.Back in CrotonIn April of 1919, Jack and Louiseacquired a German shepherd puppyand began gardening and laying flagstonesat the house on Mount Airy.Reed fell ill in the influenza epidemicsweeping the country and becamedelirious. “For some days he seemednot to understand anything,” Louisenoted. Getting a doctor to make housecalls or finding a nurse was impossible.A phone call to Dr. Harry Lober inNew York brought the advice “givehim aspirin and eggnog with plenty ofbrandy.”She was wife, doctor and nurseto Jack. Because the little house wascold, she moved the bed to the livingroom near the fireplace. Each day shegave him an alcohol rub, “starting withhis toes and working all over his body.”She turned him regularly to preventbedsores from developing.Widespread fear of contagionmade it futile to ask neighbors for help.Louise chopped wood and brought inarmloads of logs for the fire. Whenhe slept, she hurriedly descended intothe village for groceries and suppliesand struggled back up steep Mt. AiryRoad.Louise had ordered some trees. With a recovering Reed sitting bythe window and giving instructions,Boardman Robinson and Louiseplanted a small red hawthorn where hesuggested. She later wrote a touchingpoem about it:All the fruit-trees were in bloom. They were little girlsGoing to communion. But the hawthorn broke my heart. It was the little sonI dreamed about and never had.As strength slowly returned, Jackbegan to dream about making his wayback to Russia where so much washappening. Louise was furious at theidea of another separation.Robert Scott is a semi-retired bookpublisher and local historian. Some life insurancecompanies haveprofited from this tendency for a longtime, but their free ride on the backsof policy beneficiaries may be comingto an end.American International GroupInc. and MetLife Inc. have agreed topay large settlements to beneficiariesof unclaimed life insurance policiesand to change their procedures to helpidentify policies that might otherwisego unclaimed. Under the settlements, which followed recent state reviews,AIG is expected to pay around $300million, and MetLife is expected topay about $500 million.A life insurance policy is a contractualpromise to the policy’s owner thatthe insurer will pay the designatedbeneficiary when the insured persondies. Often, the policy owner is theperson whose life is insured, whichmeans that, upon death, the owner isnot in a position to notify the insurancecompany that it is time to issue a check.Usually, the beneficiary is aware of thepolicy and will claim the death benefit, but sometimes a policy’s existence iseither unknown or overlooked. In that situation, insurers donot get to just hold on to the moneyand wait. States require unclaimed orabandoned property, including insurancebenefits, to be turned over tothem for safekeeping in the event therightful owner is later identified. NewYork state’s unclaimed insurance fundcurrently holds one uncashed policyworth $1.7 million and others of lesservalue.Once the money is in state hands,it quickly becomes available for otherpurposes. THE WESTCHESTER GUARDIAN THURSDAY, november 15, 2012Page 17EYE ON THEATREWelcome Back, AnnieBy JOHN SIMONThe newly revived2,377-performancemusical, “Annie,” is, 35years later, still exceptionalin two distinctiveways.First of all, rare is the musical inwhich every song is equally effectiveintrinsically, and not just because itfurthers the plot. The number of suchshows is calculable on the fingers ofyour hands, without need of enlistingyour toes. So often at a musical youcan’t wait for the next presumablybetter song; not so with “Annie;” hereeach one is good enough to linger on.Then there’s the matter of diversity.Katie Finneran as Miss Hannigan. In far too many musicals all numberssound more or less alike, which makesfor monotony and boredom. Now, itis true that every number in CharlesStrouse’s music, with pleasurable lyricsby Martin Charnin, has a close kinshipwith the rest, but the wonder of it isthat you wouldn’t wish it otherwise. Why is that? Some of it is because of Strouse’sexcellent training—he even studied inParis with the great Nadia Boulanger, teacher of world-famous classicalcomposers and very fussy aboutwhom she would take on. He is alsothe composer of such celebrated, diverse musicals as “Bye Bye Birdie,”“Applause,” “Golden Boy,” and “Rags,”among others, and such range counts. But the homogeneity in “Annie”really works because there is somesort of ur-musical in Strouse’s mindor inner ear, a kind of ideal, archetypalcomposition that lends itself to exquisitevariations of which we simplycannot get too much. You may readilyrecall such numbers as “Maybe,”“Tomorrow,” and “Easy Street,” havinglain dormant in your memory, butthere are eleven others of equal appeal, with not even the reprises elicitinganything like a no-not-that-againresponse. You might more easily claimthat Mozart repeats himself. And then there is the book, veryloosely based on the “Little OrphanAnnie” cartoon, aptly devised byThomas Meehan, one of Broadway’spremier librettists. And who wouldn’tthrill to the story of Annie, a lovable, feisty eleven-year-old orphan; MissHannigan, the drunken, draconianmatron of the orphanage; Oliver“Daddy” Warbucks, the rampantbillionaire with the repressed heartof gold, who delivers Annie; and halfa dozen assortedly adorable furtherorphans?Georgi James as Pepper, Lilla Crawford as Annie,Emily Rosenfeld as Molly, Junah Jang as Tessie,Taylor Richardson as Duffy, Madi Rae DiPietroas July, and Tyrah Skye Odoms as Kate. Not to mention such othersas Grace Farrell, Warbucks’ valiant, unflappable secretary; Miss Hannigan’srascally brother, Rooster, and his slatternlygirlfriend, Lily, who criminallytry to impersonate Annie’s deceasedparents for the reward money; heartyPresident F.D.R. and his starchycabinet; and last but not least, Sandy, the lovable stray dog with the soundAnthony Warlow as Oliver Warbucks and Lilla Crawford.Lilla Crawford as Annie and Sunny as Sandy.judgment of letting Annie adopt him(or her, in this cast a female ).Let me praise the cast. It featuresthe highly appropriate Annie of LillaCrawford, age eleven, adult for heryears and able to belt out a song withthe best of them. It further boasts afabulous Warbucks in the Australianactor Anthony Warlow, who even tome, having seen several Warbuckses onstage, screen and TV, comes across asJeremy Davis as Hull, Anthony Warlow asOliver Warbucks, Lilla Crawford as Annie,Dennis Stowe as Morganthau, Jane Blass asPerkins, Gavin Lodge as Ickes, Merwin Foardas F.D.R. and Kevin Quillon as Howe.the most varied, incisive, and winning. You will also like most of theothers, including the canine Sunny, and her briefly glimpsed understudy,Casey; Brynn O’Malley, as a ratheridiosyncratic Grace; and others, apossible problem only with MissHannigan, played by Katie Finneran,a critics’ darling whose darlingness hasalways escaped me.She has never struck me asKatie Finneran as Miss Hannigan, Clarke Thorell asRooster, and J. Elaine Marcos as Lily St. Regis.appropriate for the slightly weirdbut ultimately likable roles she hasplayed, and does not quite make it forme even in a fundamentally unlovablepart, for which she should beeminently suitable. But then, thoughmany have tried, no one has beenquite able to match the late DorothyLoudon, the original and incomparableMiss Hannigan.“Annie” is even a discreetcomment on the Depression erain which it is situated, and we aregiven F.D.R. and his sundry ministerslightly caricatured, as well as ariveting scene in an under-the-bridgeHooverville. The sets, encompassinglocations from the poorest to therichest, are expertly conjured by DavidKorins, and revolve beautifully. SusanHilferty’s costumes cope cannily witha similarly wide range, although theytake some embellishing liberties withAnnie’s outfit; and Donald Holder’slighting, like the dogs savvily pickedfrom pounds and trained by WilliamBerloni, doesn’t miss a trick. It may help if you do not recall thefine original choreography by PeterGennaro, which may have proddedAndy Blankenbuehler’s current one, trying to compete, toward somerather less persuasive maneuvers. Thesame goes for James Lapine’s staging, which strives too hard to differ fromMartin Charnin’s original one, andeven Shirley Templifies Annie’s hairstyle. But these are relatively minormatters, scarcely troublesome fornew or less memorious audiences.Cavils be damned: “Annie” still provesirrepressible.“Annie” is playing on Broadway,at the Palace Theatre, 1564 Broadway, between 46 th and 47 th Streets, NewYork, NY 10036.Photos of “Annie” by and courtesy of JoanMusic.John Simon has written for over 50years on theatre, film, literature, musicand fine arts for the Hudson Review,New Leader, New Criterion, NationalReview, New York Magazine, OperaNews, Weekly Standard, Broadway.com and Bloomberg News. Under the taxcap legislation, the allowable increasestated the Westchester Assemblyman.“In the long run, we need to unplugConEdison and replace it with a newpower provider for Westchester only.”Abinanti sent a letter toWestchester County ExecutiveRobert Astorino dated November 9,2012, requesting that the County ofWestchester Public Utility ServiceAgency (COWPUSA) immediatelyinitiate proceedings beforethe New York State Public ServiceCommission to decertify Con Ed into property taxes will not even coverthe $1.75 million cost of Stateimposedpension increases.“The 5.57% increase to the tax levyequates to a tax rate increase of 6.99%because our tax base fell by another$3.6 million this past year,” addedStrome. The proposed tax increase forthe average homeowner is $206, orabout one percent of the total tax bill. The budget does not call for anyemployee layoffs but proposes toeliminate curbside loose-leaf pickup, cut police staffing by two vacant positionsand reduce firefighter manningat certain times. Sharptonresponded to those critics.“When we have this meetingwe will discuss the importanceof the State Senate leadershipreflecting the will of New Yorkvoters, which means if thereare a majority of DemocraticSenators, that leadership shouldbe Democratic,” said Sharpton. “I understand the importance ofthis discussion because I was verymuch involved in ensuring the willof New York voters was respecteda few years back, when I counseledthen Senator Hiram Monserrateto remain with the Democraticmajority.“My message at that meeting, and in private discussions leadingup to the meeting, will be to honorthe vote of New Yorkers, and ifthat vote places Democrats in themajority, Democrats should havethe leadership.”Four years ago, four of the 32elected Democrats withheld theirsupport for Sen. Page 20 THE WESTCHESTER GUARDIAN THURSDAY, november 15, 2012OP EDSectionTHE HEZITORIALHypocrisy Continues to Reign Supreme in YonkersBy HEZI ARISLast week, it wasrevealed thatLawrence A. Porcari,Jr., Esq., employed bythe City of YonkersLaw Department as an AssociateCorporation Counsel, on June18, 2012, had addressed the Hon.Collen McMahon, United StatesDistrict Judge, Southern Districtof New York on behalf of formerYonkers City Councilwoman SandyAnnabi with regard to a court casealleging her dropping oppositionto the Ridge Hill DevelopmentProject allegedly seduced by giftsshe received from former GOPChair Zehy Jereis. Mr Porcariaddressed Judge McMahon on officialCity of Yonkers, Department ofLaw stationery. When Yonkersiteslearned of Mr Porcari using officialstationery they were not only aghast, but they demanded he be fired.Yonkers Tribune / The WestchesterGuardian learned Mr. Porcari wasindeed suspended for 30 dayswithout pay. The outcry was of suchintensity that Mr Porcari is made tosuffer a public rebuke in a mannermany people will infer and surmiseis a balanced response to his lack ofetiquette. Before the facts are outand weary of the ConEd crisis,Yonkersites have been deflected andconsumed by the “audacity” [editorialsarcasm] of Mr Porcari’s fauxpas. Where is Miss Manners whenyou need her?At issue is the stationery MrPorcari used. No effort or concernwhether the government has proventheir case against the two defendants. The bigger issue is whetherthe government proved their case.In fact it was Judge McMahon whowas first to question the veracityof the government’s case during abreak in which the Jury was sequesteredand incapable of hearing herdemanding the government provetheir case.Perhaps Mr Porcari, amongothers who questioned the process, found it fitting and proper toaddress the court on behalf of MsAnnabi. In fact, this reporter wroteto Judge McMahon on behalf ofeach of the defendants. The prosecutionbrought up many issues thatwere later to be unproven. The prosecution’sfacts disintegrated undercross-examination. I attended thecourt trial and had hoped JudgeMcMahon would overturn the juryverdict because the government“proof ” was wanting and inconclusive. In Yonkers, issues of proofand truth are too easily maligned byarm-twisting politicians who lust toexact their toll on those they can.Mayor Mike Spano willed it and soit has come to pass that Mr Porcariwill lose approximately $10,000 forhis “misdeed”.Should one care to follow thelogic imposed against Mr. Porcari, one would need to delve into whyMr Porcari cannot solicit theempathy of the court using governmentstationery when it is knownthat Mayor Mike Spano beseechedthe court to be compassionate intheir ruling over his brother, formerSenator Nick Spano, which waslikewise written on official governmentstationery. Does not Amerikasubscribe to what is good for thegoose is good for the gander? WereAmerica so righteous in its conduct, behavior condoned in Yonkerswould not be so easily appeased. While ConEd struggled torestore electricity to all Yonkersites,a gasoline shortage revealed itself.Gasoline stations did not havepower by which to pump fuel. Linesof as long as 6 hours formed towait one’s turn to get fuel for electricgenerators and to fill gas tanks.Tempers flared. Yonkers MayorMike Spano declared a 10-gallonmaximum allowance of fuel perfill up. That brilliant effort reducedthe length of stay at gas stationsthat had electrical power to pumpfuel and had fuel to pump fromthe 6-hour wait to 3-hours withina day’s time and eventually down to1-hour as of Friday, November 9,2012. But the goose did not sufferlike the gander. It seems that Yonkers PoliceDepartment personnel werepermitted to fill their gas tank to thebrim at the taxpayer’s expense; sodid their wives and girlfriends. The“Gasboy” operation was respectivelyconducted at the First and ThirdPrecincts. G_d Bless America! When will we stand for nothingless than transparency, truth, facts, clarity, and ethical conduct? Instead,we pontificate while espousing themullarkey knowing that Annabiand Jereis are the latest to be sacrificedfor the public interest so thatthe “ra ra ra, sis boom bah” teamscan maintain their T count fillingtheir gas tank on the taxpayer’sdollar. Bruce Ratner, the Miliofamily, Capelli Enterprises, JoeCotter’s operation, even the YonkersChamber of Commerce, among somany others will remain to fleeceYonkers for many days forward.Yonkers has become a nightmare. What are we going to doabout it?Canning Mayor Mike Spano amonth’s salary would be an appropriatestart.OP-EDIt Took an Election to Find Diogenes Honest ManBy BOB K. BOGENWhat an election! What a confirmationof democracy? Andthis, all in the face offears, that our electionshave been converted into auctions, with all results / offices given to thehighest bidder.Surely this is the time for the“End Zone dance”. After 50 yearsof celebrating touchdowns in footballwith simply “spiking” downthe ball in the End Zone and thedozens of variations of dances andmimes, the army of people havebeaten the Royalist / Republicanmoneyed storm troopers! This washuge! It will be remembered foras long as democracy exists. Bigsurprise: Justice rules.Even locally, against ourdark fears, money and vicious lieshave not always won. Againstexpectations that redistricting, gerrymandering, and big moneywould insure Nan Hayworth’sreelection, she has instead lost toSean Maloney. The fears that democracy andits elections were doomed by theformerly Supreme Court CitizensUnited pronouncement promotingunlimited and secret, electioncontributions in hundreds ofmillions of dollars for tens of thousandsof campaign video ads andother actions to mislead voters didnot determine the election results. You will probably agree thatthe election has been an extremely, absolutely serious concern for ourcourts [certainly including ourformerly Supreme Court, fourJustices may retire and be replacedby the president], as well as weakeningthe Tea “Bagger” Partystrangle-hold policy in our current, totally non-functioning Congress, etc., plus widespread suppression ofvoters and elections, run as auctions[with highest bidders winning],corrupting the possibility of representativedemocracy.Thank God for Todd Akin andRichard Murdock! At last we couldput down our Diogenes lantern[no, not my Hurricane Sandy oillantern] when we have been lookingfor an honest Republican man, oreven two!The furious tornado of Romneyand his “men”, one after another, attacking and distancing themselvesfrom these “truth telling”Republican candidates was bothhilarious and revealing. These twospilled the beans on the Republicanpositions in Romney’s and Ryan’searlier speeches, and in the approvedspecifics of the Republican PartyPlatform.Even more dramatically, thepublic was not conned by therevelation of the Romney “47%”monarchist private video and thegrowth around the world of the“99%” movement that finally blewthe whistle on the Republican /monarchist class warfare they havebeen winning over the 99.9% ofthe nation, particularly in recentdecades.Continued on page 21

THE WESTCHESTER GUARDIAN THURSDAY, november 15, 2012Page 21OP-EDIt Took an Election to Find Diogenes Honest ManContinued from page 20Many readers will recall anold Greek tale about a philosophernamed Diogenes, antagonistof Plato and the first cynic, whofamously went about in broaddaylight through the Agora marketplacewith a lantern looking for theproverbial honest man.So for his many ‘wisdoms’,including his various putdowns ofPlato, Diogenes was called a cynic,Greek for a “dog”. And here weare, two-and-a-half millennia later, cynical voters still looking for anhonest man.Even a cynical voter can recognizeboth Joe Biden and BarackObama as unusually honest men, despite their various inabilities.Their problems have includedblocked efforts to add on theirDemocratic administration’s veryimpressive success in foreign anddomestic policy, including thousandsof added non-governmentjobs created, and other efforts tobuild our way out of the historic anddisastrous eight years of Republicangovernance of catastrophic wars andeconomic garbage heap .Those were the result ofintolerably repetitious and oldRepublican philosophy of trickledown economics on the 99% ofAmericans that culminated inthe financial catastrophe of Bush2008. And, lest we forget, thiswas in addition to trillions, [thatis to say, thousands of billions] ofdollars and thousands of Americanlives, plus uncounted thousands ofothers dead in The Middle Eastand Central Asia, as well as theloss of our world reputation as amost decent nation, lost in the twodamned, grotesque Republican warsin Iraq and Afghanistan. This inability to achievewhat needed to be done includedthe failure to find honesty anddecency in an abjectly destructiveRepublican led Congress.Particularly over the last two years, the Republican controlled Congresshad the power and totally blockedkey efforts, and hundreds of otheractions, by the Obama administrationto ‘do the nation’s business.’The Republicans abandoned theiroath of office blindly determinedto take every contrarian action tomount a hypocritical and destructiveRepublican Jihad against theblack president.Republican denials and softsoapself-cleansing attempts in thepresidential and vice-presidentialdebates were clearly disingenuous,or simply dishonest. Down deepthey sow Sharia, Taliban-stylelaws to punish all those of alternativereligious and ethical beliefs onfamily planning and God knowswhat all else. Biden, also with Ryan,a believing Catholic, explained inthe Vice-Presidential debate thathe accepted his church’s teachingfor himself, but would certainlynot agree to force that positionupon others with different beliefsby law, as Republicans publicly andexplicitly intended! Election resultsaround the nation confirmed thatregardless of religious identification, huge numbers of women weredramatically mad and “Not GoingTo Take It Anymore!” Governmentis big enough without cominginto the bedroom, forcing itself onfamily decisions. Can any thinking American, black or white, vote for candidatesof a party that, deep down, holdssuch intents, contrary to the earliestand highest American beliefs infreedom of all religions and otherethical belief systems?Add to that, strike two, inthe Republican’s vigorous votersuppression campaign across thenation, which should also eliminateany support from citizen-votersfor them. It seems clear that theysimply do not believe in democracy,in any election they cannot buy. They struck-out in their thirdattempt against representativedemocracy, in their scorched earth, destructive, obstructionism forthe last several years in Congress. It was Republican Leader MitchMcConnell who announced yearsago his primary objective, againstany general public interest, toprevent any Congressional actionthat might possibly help PresidentObama. He will go down inhistory in the Un-American Hallof Fame with Benedict Arnold, the infamous, hanged traitor of theAmerican Revolution. All this, even before consideringall their grotesque substantivepolicy views and actions: Lesshealthcare, dismissing the environmentand global warming; obsceneand bankrupting wars, reducingpublic education at all levels, andone affirmative policy - the housingpolicy, and a tax system suggestingtheir true basic platform is simplymore billions for billionaires. You might think after thiselection they might tuck theirtroglodyte slimy tail under theirbacksides and retreat back underthe rocks from which they slitherevery generation or two. When willthey learn the old adage attributedto Lincoln, the betrayed builder ofthe Republican Party, “You can foolsome of the people all of the time, and even all of the people some ofthe time, but not all, or even most ofthe people all of the time. The Monarchists are not FarRight; they are but Far Wrong.Bob K. Bush for thecountry’s economic troubles, and mostbelieve that Obama’s policies havehelped the recovery.Bush was such a poor presidentthat conservatives no longer botherto defend the previous commanderin chief, says New York attorney andpolitical humorist Steven Sarshik.“It has become conventionalwisdom that Bush messed up so badlythat pundits on both sides tend to glossover the magnitude of his appallinglegacy,” says Sarshik, author of thesatirical novel, “The Apology,” (www.sarshik.com), a fantastical tale thatbegins on the day of Obama’s secondinauguration, when Bush gets himselfinto a jam in Europe.“Conservatives won’t go anywherenear Bush’s eight years, except to tellliberals who blame him for the difficultrecovery to stop living in thepast. I mean … the guy wasn’t eveninvited to the Republican NationalConvention in Tampa,” Sarshik says.“The Democrats mentioned him moreat their convention.”Unfortunately, in political debate, reviewing Bush’s record has become anon-starter, “but that doesn’t mean histenure didn’t happen,” Sarshik says.He reviews some of the Bushpolicy flubs that directly contributed toRomney’s defeat:• A party of extremists: Inorder to compete with this season’sRepublican primary candidates andsatisfy the hordes of Tea Party conservatives,“moderate Mitt” had to takea backseat in favor of pedal-to-themetal,far-right Romney. The partytook a dramatic shift to the far rightas a result of Bush’s expensive, fiscallyirresponsible policies. After the primaries,“flip-flopper” didn’t seem strongenough to describe Romney’s shiftingstances; his proposed policies became“Etch-a-Sketch,” almost to the pointof being Zen-like, Sarshik says. “Often, his answers to questions becameexceedingly abstract, and I think theshifting discouraged independent andundecided voters.”• A clear and simple foreignpolicy narrative: A recent VanityFair exposé shows that Bush wasgiven ample warning of the attacks onAmerican soil before Sept. 11, 2001.While the 43rd president followedup with what still seems to many anon-sequitur war in Iraq, Obamaoversaw the end of that protractedcampaign and killed the man responsiblefor 9-11. Romney’s foreign policyappeared to be a continuation of Bush’scostly approach.• FEMA and the “heck of a job,Brownie” gaffe: “Frankenstorm”Sandy hit the Northeast days beforethe Nov. 6 election, which could havedevastated Obama’s campaign had hehandled it poorly. Instead, his cooperationwith New Jersey Rep. Gov. ChrisChristie was the perfect example ofhow to handle local and state-levelemergencies. During debates, in anattempt to back up small-governmentrhetoric and explain away Bush’spoor handling of Hurricane Katrinadisaster relief, Romney said the FederalEmergency Management Agencyshould be dismantled in favor of statecontrol, and “even better,” be privatized.Steven Sarshik has been a New YorkCity trial lawyer for more than 30 years, handling all sorts of politically chargedcases – much like the fictitious one hepaints in “The Apology.” He is also theauthor of “Wrongful Death,” a novelabout an NYC police shooting.

Page 22 THE WESTCHESTER GUARDIAN THURSDAY, november 15, 2012LIBERTYHow Conservatives Lost Women VotersBy ANITA L. STAVERLate last year when apresidential primarycandidate was askedhow he was going toreach women voters,he responded that he was pollingwell with women. Oh, oh. Heseemed clueless about what mostwomen really want. Once again, women were being taken for grantedand once again we could lose – bigtime. And lose, we did.Reaching women is not a newconcept. The importance of our voteshould be well-known, as womenhave registered and voted at a higherrate than men since the 1980.One would think everycampaign would have a provenstrategy by now. But, while I don’tclaim to speak for all Americanwomen, no doubt many of us rolledour eyes and sighed or cringed atsome of the conservative candidates’messaging. We may not relish theharanguing and rudeness, but we arewilling to ignore it if our candidatecan clearly articulate how their positionsand plans will improve life forNEW YORKALERTCIVICBy HENRY J. STERNThe 2012 nationalelection had beendescribed by bothparties as a clash ofcompeting ideologies;the politicians said it would bean Armageddon whose outcomewould determine America’s coursefor decades.Like so many political predictions, that one turned out tobe wrong. The 50% - 48% splitbetween candidates Obama andRomney did not show a nationalconsensus. Although the resultstaken individually were somewhatbetter for the Democrats, the Republicans kept control ofthe House. There was no mandateto either expand the safety netor to weaken it. Polls showed aus and our families.Candidates cannot just treatwomen like we matter just to get ourvote. Women can spot a phony – wehave experience. They cannot take usfor granted, or treat us like a bunchof airheads who will fall for a goodline. Instead of telling us what weshould think, they should pay attentionto not only what they say, butalso how they live – 24/7/365.Developing consistent, conservativemessages, and that resonatewith women of all ages is important. But it is just as critical for candidatesto start living like they believe thosemessages, and start telling us howtheir message is relevant in our lives.A convincing message must be clearand it must connect with the heart. When a candidate says he’s prolife, like most Americans, what doeshe mean? Professing a pro-life beliefis necessary for a conservative candidate, but it is not sufficient. How doesthat translate into real life? Whatwill he really do about it? Does hehelp single moms? Does he also careabout the children we already have? Will he mow an elderly neighbor’syard or run errands for the sick? WillElection Renews StasisAmerica Has Not Decided In Which Direction To Gomajority of the population favoreda lesser role for the government ineconomic affairs, while at the sametime they voted for Obama, whoheld the opposite view. This election turned out to be avictory for moderation. Candidateswho ran primaries on the far rightmoved towards the center in thegeneral election if for no otherreason than that is where thevotes are. However, there was notenough time to pirouette twiceand a few Republicans were caughtwith their snakeskins still molting. In New York State’s 27 housedistricts (down from 45 in 1950),no Member of Congress wasdefeated primarily on ideologicalgrounds. There was no significantswing in either direction. Turnoversresulted from local sentiment andhe throw out senseless regulations sowe can feed the homeless? These arepro-life principles, too, that solidifiesthe pro-life message and makes itrelevant.Or consider gun control. Showwomen how to have both freedomand safety for their families. Gunpolicy must make sense to women. We can empathize with the 12-yearoldgirl who followed her mother’sinstructions to arm herself with agun and shoot an intruder. We canidentify with needing guns to keepour family safe.Women are smart enough todecide whether to have a gun. Wedon’t want the government telling uswe cannot have one. After all, criminalsdon’t just kill people with guns;they use knives, fires, cars and bombs, too. Does the candidate also have aplan to keep criminals off our streetsand out of our schools? That is a planwomen can support. And when a candidate claimsto support traditional family values, what does that mean? Will he reallywork to stop the child molesters andbring the Jerry Sanduskys of theworld to justice? Will he committhe individual strengths and weaknessesof candidates, not froma switch in public opinion fromone philosophy to another. As isoften the case, the same peoplewho in polls found fault with theirlegislators nonetheless generallyre-elected them. The national parties spentbillions of dollars in political racesand ended up in practically thesame place they began. Howeverthat does not mean that the moneywas wasted because if the partieshad not spent it they might haveincurred substantial losses. The factthat the races were so costly, largelybecause of the high cost of mediatime in New York State, does notprove that the expenditures wereunnecessary.State Senate Democrats werehelped by an infusion of millionsof dollars by the teachers unionin several races, coupled withPresident Obama’s strong showingto work against evil people whodestroy so many families? Will hetarget those who enslave women inprostitution?A family values mantra is notsufficient when the statistics showthat so many men, even professingChristians, are further sickening ourcommunities by viewing Internetporn. A man who demeans women, mistreats his wife, or ignores his kidshas no real family values Womenthis know. Women talk. A politicianis free to play golf or watch footballso long as he also shows that he takeshis marriage vows seriously. We want politicians whoconsider our interests as well ashis own. While we struggle tobalance household, family and workresponsibilities, we have a hardtime trusting that those we vote forwill work as hard for us. We have anagging suspicion that too manygovernment workers are lollygaggingaround while pretending to be publicservants. Our suspicion is reinforcedby the all-too-frequent newsreports of lavish travel, infidelity andprostitutes. Now, about that elephant inthe room. For so many conservativewomen, the presidential race was notabout electing Romney. It was, forat the top of the ticket. The first issue that will ariseafter the election is whether tocall the current New York StateLegislature back into sessionbefore January 1st. They wantsubstantial pay increases for themselves, which would make themthe highest paid state legislatorsin the country. The issue willlikely be what reforms they willbegrudgingly enact in order to getthe Governor to sweeten the pot.The choice of leaders will be fascinating;remember what happenedthe last time Senate Democratshad a majority, in 2009.Another factor for GovernorCuomo, a presumed candidate forPresident in 2016, is that he doesnot want to be seen as opposing aleft-leaning state legislature, so hewill have a compelling reason toparticipate in the choice of leadership, although of course he willexpress disinterest in the matter.many of us, an anti-Obama event.Romney was like the unwantedsuitor at our high school prom. Wedanced because we didn’t want toturn him down and make a scene. Our reluctance was warranted, because as we danced, he talkedabout his economic plan.Like one of those dolls we hadas kids: “Hello, my name is ChattyCathy!” Just pull the string to hearthe same lines over and over. AskRomney about anything and hewould say, “Hello, I know how to runa business.”Many of us would have voted forthe Grinch if he was the Republicannominee. Other women felt themselvescaught between the devil andthe deep blue sea, but they wereunwilling to give up their currentunhealthy relationship for an uncertainvoyage. We believed Romney caredabout the economy, but it was notclear if he cared about anything elsethat we care about. He lost us at“Hello.”Anita Staver is an attorney andPresident of Liberty Counsel, www.LC.org.If he does not weigh in and thelegislature chooses someone whois ideologically at odds with him,it will add to his difficulty ingoverning. If a fractious legislaturemakes the Governor appear to beout of step with his own party, thatwould not be helpful to his ambitionto be the Leader of the FreeWorld.Again there is a potentialconflict between the delegates tothe 2016 Democratic convention, many of whom will be proudsocialists, and the overall electorate, whose viewpoints are much moremoderate. This is analogous to thetea party situation: militant activistsinfluencing the party beyondtheir numbers and making it moredifficult for them to win a broadbasednational election.Henry J. Stern is the founder andpresident of New York Civic.
