A Message from the President<strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> has a strong reputation for academic excellence and a long history as a vitalcommunity resource. As we spent the year celebrating our 80th Anniversary, I had the opportunityto see how deeply people care about what happens on the <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> campus. In this annualreport, we were proud to share our review of an exciting and rewarding year!Several factors contribute to making <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> a unique institution. Our team of expertfaculty, conscientious staff and committed management is dedicated to providing our students witha stimulating, quality education in a supportive environment. Our students come with myriad goals,and whether they plan on completing an associate’s degree, transferring to a four-year university,enhancing their career skills, or enriching their cultural and personal knowledge base, we strive toprovide them with the optimum educational experience.We have, as you will see, a very diverse student body. Our students represent all ages and manyethnic and cultural backgrounds. We are proud this year to have garnered national recognitionfor our work on behalf of Hispanic students, as noted by Hispanic Outlook Magazine, to have thenation’s first community college scholarship awarded to a breast cancer survivor, and to havecreated the <strong>Ventura</strong> Promise, a scholarship program for new high school graduates and thosereceiving GEDs.Thank you to our faculty, staff, administrators, students, and community supporters who workso hard to make <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> a wonderful place to learn. <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> 80th AnniversaryVC Celebrates 80 Years of Learning and Service!The <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> Community hosted a year-long series of events to honor the college’s 80thAnniversary. Inaugurated August 31, 1925, as grades 13 and 14 of the <strong>Ventura</strong> High School, <strong>Ventura</strong><strong>College</strong> has a proud and storied history. Over the <strong>2005</strong>-2006 academic year, VC students, faculty, staff,administrators and alumni celebrated through a variety of festivities, including:• Creation of an 80th Anniversary poster that was disseminated toevery elementary, middle and high school in our service area. Theposter contained a specially designed logo and photos from the fourgenerations of classes and activities at VC. That logo also appeared onthree Schedules of Classes published over the year.• Decorating an award-winning 76 foot float with the theme “HatsOff to Education” for the City of <strong>Ventura</strong> St. Patrick’s Day parade thatposthumously honored emeritus professor Tom O’Neill.• Two Campus Clean Up days• A cake-baking contest in October, open to the public, wth child,teen, adult and professional divisions, The winning professional entry,shown above, was made by Sibling Bakery, <strong>Ventura</strong>.• A poetry and art drawing contest for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade studentswithin the VC service area.• A special four-display case exhibit hosted in the Library withmemorabilia, yearbooks, graduation regalia, sports equipment, photos,catalogs and other items from the <strong>College</strong>’s history.• An 80th Birthday Party attended by alums and recognized by ourelected representatives from the federal, state and local governments,where we served four huge cakes created with photos from the 20s, 50s,70s and <strong>2005</strong>, followed by a campus-wide Open House.• Medallions worn by the faculty and staff participating in thecommencement march and special pins provided to the graduatesrecognized the anniversary.• Documentation of 80 Acts of Kindness performed by the members ofthe campus family transferred to a commemorative poster.


Student ActivitiesThe Associated Students of <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> (ASVC) is the student government for the <strong>College</strong>, made up of elected and appointedstudent officers and representatives. ASVC had a very successful year that benefited many students and departments. A partial listof the areas to which ASVC contributed time, effort and funds to this past year include:• Supported and participated in the OneBook One Campus Program.• Hosted Random Acts of Kindness CampusBarbeque.• $2,000 donation to the Women’s andRe-entry Center for textbooks for their LendingLibrary.• Supported the VC Student Photo ID system.• Participated in activities that accounted fora 39% increase in voter turnout over the prioryear for the student elections.• Funded $500 for EOPS scholarships.• Funded AGS scholarships.• Donated $2,500 to the <strong>Ventura</strong> Promise.• Sponsored and funded various Quad Events.• Supported Student Clubs, including trips bythe Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers(SHPE), the Student Chapter of the Societyfor the Advancement of Chinos and NativeAmericans in Society (SACNAS), Alpha GammaSigma Honors Society (AGS) and ASVC tripsto various national and regional conferencesfor training in ethics, leadership, and variousacademic activities.• The Psychology Club participated inthe Beach Clean Up for Earth Day.• Assisted the Transfer Center with expensesfor Transfer Day.• Provided funding to various student loanprograms including the Emergency StudentLoan Program and Student Book VoucherProgram.• With the assistance of the PublicInformation Officer, a new ASVC Constitutionwas drafted and passed at the general studentelection and new By- Laws were created andpassed by the ASVC Board.• Hosted Club Days, ice cream socials andbarbeques throughout the year.• Hosted free movies for the students in theCampus Center.• Provided $5,000 for a vending machinein the LRC to dispense scantrons, pens, andother items for students.• Funded $3,700 for new Transfer Centercomputer monitors.• Provided $2,000 for books for theLibrary Textbook Bank.• Hosted the ASVC Spirit Week activities• Funded a guest speaker for Women’sHistory Month hosted by the Re-entry andWomen’s Center and the Women’s ConcernsCouncil.• Funded the campus literary magazine, VCVoices, and student awards.• In conjunction with the campus clubs, hosteda campus-wide Katrina fund-raising event.• SHPE & SACNAS members helped build theworld’s tallest chocolate tower at the ChocolateFestival.• Sponsored the campus-wide Canned FoodDonation Drive.• Hosted a Read-a-thon at the ChildDevelopment Center.


Intercollegiate Athletics<strong>2005</strong>-2006 was a tremendous year in VC Athletics! Among the accomplishments for the year were the following:• <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> won its 8th consecutiveWestern State Conference (WSC) AthleticSupremacy Award from our 15 memberconference. This year, we won by the largestmargin of victory in WSC history.• The <strong>College</strong> won 9 WSC Championshipsfor a second consecutive year. <strong>2005</strong>-06 WSCChampionships included Women’s Volleyball,Men’s Cross Country, Women’s Water Polo,Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Women’sSoccer, Men’s Baseball, Men’s Swimming andDiving, and Women’s Swimming and Diving.• The Men’s Swimming and Diving Teamplaced 2nd in the 2006 California StateChampionship in our attempt to defend VC’s<strong>2005</strong> State Swimming and Diving Championshipunder Head Coach Larry Baratte.• The Women’s Swimming and DivingTeam placed 4th in the 2006 California StateChampionships.• The VC Men’s Swimming and Diving teamreceived the California State Scholar-AthleteTeam Award from the State Commission onAthletics (COA) - 3rd consecutive Scholar TeamAward for Men’s Swinmming and 11th ScholarTeam Award for a VC team in the last 7 years.• The VC Women’s Soccer team captured their10th consecutive WSC Championship underHead Coach Steve Hoffman.• The VC Women’s Volleyball team, coachedby Miki McFadden, was also a California StateScholar Athlete Team. The teams so selectedwere from the 2004-<strong>2005</strong> academic year andrecognized in the <strong>2005</strong>-2006 year.• Western State Conference <strong>2005</strong>-06 Coachesof the Year: Don Adams, Baseball; MandyRodriquez, Women’s Volleyball, Steve Hoffman,Women’s Soccer, Mary Giles, Women’s WaterPolo, Greg Winslow, Men’s Basketball, NancyFredrickson, Men’s Cross Country and LarryBaratte, Men’s and Women’s Swimming andDiving.• <strong>2005</strong>-06 Pepsi/NATYCCA Cup ranking of#17 for overall “athletic program excellence”for two-year colleges in California after beingranked #7 in 2004-<strong>2005</strong> - 5th consecutiveyear <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> Athletics has been in thetop 20 for program excellence from over 100community colleges offering intercollegiateathletic programs.• The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association(WBCA) included the <strong>2005</strong>-06 VC Women’s BasketballTeam in their list of thenational Academic Top 25Team Honor Roll for Junior<strong>College</strong>/Community <strong>College</strong>sfor the third straight year.• Several hundred students, alumni and staffthe groundbreaking ceremony, held September1, for the new <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> Sportsplex. Thenew complex includes a synthetic football andsoccer field, spectator seating for 3,000, and anall-weather nine-lane track.• The VC Men’s and Women’s Basketballteams went undefeated in <strong>2005</strong>-06 WSC play.Women captured their 16th consecutive WSCChampionship under Head Coach Ned Mircetic,while the Men captured their 5th consecutive WSCChampionship under Head Coach Greg Winslow.• The Second <strong>Annual</strong>“We Play Hard” basketballcoaching clinic brought 125coaches from middle andhigh schools and collegesaround the country tolearn from the best: TexWinter (Chicago Bulls, LALakers), Bob Kloppenburg(Supersonics); Tim Grgurich(Portland Trailblazers); Jim Harrick (UCLA) andMike Dunlap (CLU).• Men’s Basketball Head Coach Greg Winslowwas recognized for achieving his 200th winduring the <strong>2005</strong>-06 season.• The VC Men’s Tennis Team clinched the WSCChampionship!


The Arts• The VC Theatre students had multipleperformance, directing, set design, lighting,costuming, makeup and stage productionlearning experiences while producing theFall and Spring One Act Play Festivals, TheNight of January 16 by Ayn Rand, and RoomService.• In addition, the Theatre Departmentnetworked with the local high school theatreprograms and created a work internship with<strong>Ventura</strong>’s professional company, the RubiconTheatre.• The VC Opera and Musical Theatre programdelighted audiences with scenes from TheFantastick’s in the fall and with Cabaret (sixsold out performances) in the spring.• The Music Department Faculty GuestArtist Series highlighted The Legacy Trio,(violin, cello and piano), a Grand Piano Soiree,the Art of Song, with VC faculty member O.Powers, Michael Glenn Williams, guest pianist,Ensemble Green, a contemporary chamberensemble, and Classical Guitar, with VC facultymember Carlos Gonzales, all in one week! TheOctober Series showcased The Choir Boys withguests Jeff Kaiser and Andrew Pask, plus others,utilizing trumpet, saxophone, electric guitar,electric contrabass guitars and electronics.Barelas, for the celebration of Albuquerque,NM’s 300th Anniversary. The work wasperformed by the New Mexico SymphonyOrchestra. Mr. Del Aquila served as Composerin Residence with the Orchestra for <strong>2005</strong>-06.• The Orchestra and <strong>Ventura</strong> County MasterChorale presented three world premieres bycommissioning works from faculty members,Dr. Ollie Powers, Dr. Burns Taft and DepartmentChair, Robert Lawson. Elizabeth Helms andDr. Taft conducted the Master Chorale for the250th Mozart Anniversary Concert held inJanuary.• The Music Department replaced allpianos in the piano lab with 16 state of the artClavinova pianos and new acoustic Yamahapianos.• The VC Spring Dance Concert, ThirtyYears in the Making, was a culmination ofchoreographic works by all past and present<strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> dance directors and assistantdirectors.• SOUL2SOLE, the Fall Dance Performance,featured local Flamenco dance historian, AnnaGalindo and her company, and works by localvisual artists. The show incorporated danceforms from Scottish Highland to tap.• Plates and More, the <strong>Annual</strong> April ArtAuction, raised money for scholarships forart students. Attendees received free ceramicvessels created by VC ceramics students.• After a juried competition, 65 art andphotography students were awarded morethan $7,000, presented at the reception for the<strong>Annual</strong> Student Art Awards show. The <strong>College</strong>purchased the Best of Show winner for thepermanent collection, Evolution of a Moodby Amy Schneider.• The VC Galleries: Gallery 2 and the NewMedia Gallery, hosted thirteen shows over theyear, presenting exhibits utilizing media rangingfrom encaustics to photographs from the CivilRights era to ceramics to paintings.• The Blanchard Library in Santa PaulaWatercolor Plein Air Exhibit featuredthe work of 26 students and their instructor,Professor Dorothy Orr.• A catalog was created to document the<strong>College</strong>’s permanent art collection, much ofwhich is now hanging in the AdministrationBuilding and the new Library.• Robert Moskowitz, Department Chair ofArt, was one of three recipients of the Otis<strong>College</strong> of Art and Design’s Teacher of the YearAward. Bob joined the VC art faculty in 1998.• The holiday season brought music of allkinds for all ages, including the VC CommunityOrchestra’s performance of Peter and theWolf, the VC Choir at the Church of theFoothills; the VC Jazz Band, the New MusicConcert, premiering VC students’ compositions,and the VC Music Department WinterConcert featuring students in the Applied Musicprogram.• Miquel del Aguila, VC adjunct musicinstructor, created an opera, Time and Again• Twelve students in M.B. Hanrahan’s VC Mural Class collaborated to create a 30 foot muralrepresenting learning and knowledge for the bookstore. The new mural, shown in part above,faces the 50 foot mural created by Ms. Hanrahan’s 2002 class.


Student ServicesEvery department of the Student Services Division has been updating, renovating and reorganizing as they get ready to move intonew quarters. Among the various successes of the past year are:• More than 900 students were eligibleto walk in the May graduation and receivetheir Associate of Science or Associate of Artsdegree.• VC transferred 580 students to theCalifornia State University (CSU) system and139 students to the University of California(UC) system for the 05-06 academic year.• The remodeling of the old library to housethe new Student Services One Stop Center isproceeding. The Student Services Center willhouse Admissions and Records, Counseling,Student Business Office, Transfer and CareerCenter and the new student Assessment Center.• The new Student Health and PsychologicalServices Center in the remodeled CR Building,begun last year, is also near completion.• The Educational Assistance Center served1026 students in <strong>2005</strong>-2006 The number ofstudents receiving EAC services increased by4.5% over the previous year.• The Assistive Technology Training Centeris now in the Learning Resource Center.Equipped with state-of-the-art hardware andsoftware, students with all kinds of disabilitiesincluding blindness, learning disabilities,developmental disabilities and mobilityimpairments, learn how to successfully operatecomputers. The integration of accessibletechnology throughout the LRC is a statewidemodel. The ATTC has been selected byMicrosoft to be a MARC training center.• VC students were able to register for thesummer and fall semesters simultaneously– beginning early in the spring .• An innovative Kurzwiel-License-to-Go waspiloted by the Alternate Media program. Underthe college’s license, students are allowed toinstall powerful screen reader software on theirhome computers for use in reading alternatetext. Very few other colleges are offering thisservice to students.• Financial Aid hosted the <strong>College</strong>’s firstConstitution and Citizenship Day, mandated byCongress and assisted by Assemblyman PedroNava.• Student Services staff provided collegeassessment testing and pre-college orientationduring visits to 16 local area high schools.• Financial Aid staff and EOPS counselorsinitiated a cooperative outreach program toexplain opportunities for financial aid to highschool students. Financial Aid representativesvisited classrooms in local high and middleschools across the college’s service area. Detailsabout Financial Aid received by VC students isavailable on page 3.• The Career Center significantly expandedthe scope and number of businessesparticipating in the 29th <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong>Job Fair.• The <strong>Annual</strong> VC Transfer Day drew morethan 60 participating colleges and universitiesand experienced a corresponding increase instudent attendance.• Admissions staff and counselors assistedmore than 500 graduating high school seniorswith their online applications and registrationfor classes during BEACH WEEK in May.• The college upgraded the web-baseddegree audit system which provides VC studentswith online reports that summarize all oftheir course-work taken at a VCCCD college;their progress toward AA and AS degreesand certificates; and their transfer status forcolleges in the CSU and UC systems.• The college upgraded the SARSappointment/student tracking system toinclude automatic calling to remind students ofappointments and fee deadlines. Students alsobegan receiving email reminders of upcomingregistration and drop dates.• VC Counselors hosted 40 high schooland middle school counselors at their annualHigh School Exhange Day to explain multitermregistration and dual enrollment.• The Re-entry and Women’s Center and theVC Breast Cancer Education & Advocacy Groupawarded the nation’s first scholarship to abreast cancer survivor, Sylvia Rosolek.• EOPS hosted a Superintendent of SchoolsMigrant Education Program Student Conferencein February on “Going to <strong>College</strong>.”


Voc Tech / Health SciencesThe <strong>2005</strong>-06 highlights from these departments reflects an increased focus campus-wide on school to career pathways, through theuse of hands-on training and cutting edge technologies.• High school students from North Hollywoodto Paso Robles competed against one another andtested their automotive skills with various challengesin May. The 32nd <strong>Annual</strong> Automotive TechnologyEducational Olympics was held in the campus AutoTech area and featured contests, games, prizes andfood.• The VC Nursing School, in collaboration withCuesta, Allan Hancock, Santa Barbara City andMoorpark <strong>College</strong>s, received a grant from theCalifornia Community <strong>College</strong> Workforce InvestmentAct Governor’s Discretionary Fund. VC will receive$231,000 per year to employ a Student Nurse casemanager and clerical support, provide skills labequipment and digitize instructional materials. VCwill receive a total award of $635,000 from the fiveyear grant. The grant is designed to increase nursingschool enrollments, completion rates and licensureexam passage rates.• The nursing program has undertaken anarticulation with CSU Channel Island’s new BSNprogram and is represented on that program’sadvisory committee.• In August <strong>2005</strong>, Professor Scot Rabe andthe Department of Industrial Design/Draftinghosted a week long collaborative design seminarfor design faculty. This project, funded througha grant from the National Science Foundation,brought community college, university, and highschool faculty from the far edges of the US. Theseminar focused on collaborative design and rapidmanufacturing technologies. Design curriculum andprojects are available on the project website, www.designcollaborative.org and are being shared amonginterested colleges and schools. The NSF projectteam met again in August 2006.• Welding instructor Mike Clark and his studentscompleted work on a new charcoal barbeque forthe <strong>Ventura</strong> Lions Club. The beautiful barbeque,which sports a shiny “Made by <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong>”sign, will be used for the numerous charity eventshosted by the Lions. Great work for a worthy group.The Welding program also completed a second,less ornate, barbeque for Foothill Technology HighSchool.• Karen Kukurin, Deputy Director CommunityLiaison for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger,unexpectedly visited the campus in March to get abetter understanding of the role of the communitycollege in occupational and vocational training.According to Ms. Kukurin, the Governor’s state-widebond measure will result in a large number ofvocational jobs to assist with the renovation of theports, roads and educational institutions, amongother upgrades.• The Construction Technology program isonly one of 17 in the nation approved by the StateDivision of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS) to teachelectrician certification. We are the only school soapproved in this section of the state.• The VC Toyota T-Ten program, recognized asone of the top five in the nation, is in negotiationswith Toyota to establish a new Toyota trainingprogram on the campus. Toyota and Lexus continueto be valuable partners in VC’s total AutomotiveProgram.• The VC Manufacturing Technology programwas the recipient of a very generous donation fromHaas Machine Company of several state-of-the-art,advanced Computer Numerical Control (C.N.C.)machines, valued at approximately $200,000.• The VC Basic Sheriff’s Academy increased tothree academies this past year as well as increasingthe number of cadets per academy. More than 112students completed the basic academy in 05-06. TheReserve Academy graduated 99 students in the twoAcademies this year.• More than 30 Criminal Justice CommunityRelations students visited the Museum of Tolerancein Los Angeles, and took a field trip to the CaliforniaAppeals Court in <strong>Ventura</strong>. While at the Court, theyhad the opportunity to witness proceedings and totalk to the Appellate justices during a break in thehearing.• Over the <strong>2005</strong>-2006 Academic Year, the NursingProgram graduated 80 students with AssociateDegrees in Nursing and five LVN to R.N. 30 unitoptions, a significant increase in A.S. degreesconferred. 89.66% of those taking the licensureexam passed.• Alumni and employer evaluations confirm that98% of all graduates from the nursing programare employed in the field upon completion of theprogram. The remaining 2% either have not passedthe licensure exam or have chosen not to work. Theglobal shortage of nurses continues and all of the<strong>Ventura</strong> County hospitals have open positions.• Samantha Ross, a June <strong>2005</strong> VC paramedic grad,was named Paramedic of the Year (September, 2006)for “treating her patients with care and compassion”in her work with Gold Coast Ambulance. Samanthawas the Outstanding Student for her class. Liberal Arts & Learning Resources• The opening of the new Library andLearning Resources building resulted in adoubling of the number of students using theresources, with 177,649 users of the Library,2190 students served in the Tutoring Center, and60,158 student hours served in the LearningResource Center ..• The LRC Fundraising Task Force and theVC Foundation have raised over $328,000 tosupport the completion and operation of thebuilding.• The Library Committee and Library staffhosted Professor Deborah Pollack and LibrarianPeter Sezzi’s American Library AssociationJewish Literature discussion series, Lincoln inthe Library and various events supporting theOne Book One Campus project – all open to thecommunity.• The <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> Library Book Binderyprovides historical and literary preservation,and is believed to be the only book binderyin the nation located on a community collegecampus.• Two grants received by the Library allowedfor the design and creation of a Children’sLibrary with more than 1,000 specially selectedbooks, children’s furniture and a computerdesigned for children’s use.• The Language Arts department has createdan English and Reading assessment andplacement process that allows students to takethe composition, speech, reading or literaturecourse at the correct level for their skills, whichenhances student success and retention.• The Interdisciplinary Ethics Team-TaughtClass, a unique offering with up to eightinstructors each semester, debates ethical issuesfrom areas such as environmental studies,bioethics, criminal justice, business, law, themedia, literature, medicine, politics, theatre andpsychology.• Fashion Merchandising students won statewiderecognition and awards for their creativedesigns in March. A new lab is in the planningstages, to be completed within three years.• New foreign language software has beenimplemented in the LRC BEACH lab, providingstudents with many kinds of languageacquisition support.• The Child Development Center (CDC)hosted two Family Fun Days that alloweddozens of community families to participate instimulating children’s activities and explore theCenter, which provides quality child care andpreschool education for the youngsters of VCstudents and others.• In the spring, the CDC had more than 140children enrolled; the highest number ever! Twothirds of the youngsters have a parent attendingthe college. Special scholarships and grants,such as First Five and CChampis, are availablefor needy students to off-set tuition for theirchildren, enabling them to stay in college.• The CDC is also an instructional lab toprovide early childhood education students withhands-on training. That helps qualify them forCalifornia Child Development Center Permitsand makes them eligible to receive ChildDevelopment Training Consortium stipends.• Students entering the Child Developmentfield are eligible to receive tuition and booksubsidies through grants awarded to <strong>Ventura</strong><strong>College</strong>.• <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> hosts the area ChildDirector’s Group, the advisory board for theinstructional program, and as a result of theGroup’s suggestions, has offered many oneday(and a first multi-Saturday) courses, forcredit, of particular interest to early childhoodprofessionals. Mathematics, Sciences & Social Sciences• Instructor Bill Budke organized and servedas host for the successful Agricultural EducatorsSymposium in Geographic Information Systemsattended by more than 80 educators from aroundthe country and Puerto Rico.• The Geosciences department completed the$300,000 USDA 2 Grant in Supervisor Trainingin Integrated Spatially-Distributed EnvironmentalSensors in Agriculture, and completed the TechPrep Program in Career Pathway Development inGeosciences and Spatial Science Careers, fundedby a $75,000 grant.• The Arts and Sciences Division has createda new Environmental Science curriculum, withcourses debuting in the 2006-07 academic year.• Professor Steve Palladino, while on sabbatical,served as a visiting professor in both theGeography/GIS and the Environmental Sciencesunit of the University of Auckland New Zealand,School of Geography and Environmental Sciences.• The Biotechnology Program purchased a realtimePCR, technology for DNA and RNA detectionthat permits a very small sample to be replicatedenough to be tested for such diverse situations asE coli water/food safety and forensics.• Dr. Jim Harber, Director of the Central CoastBiotechnology Center was honored in April asthe Technologist of the Year at the 2nd <strong>Annual</strong>Leadership Dinner sponsored by the CSU ChannelIslands Business and Technology Partnership.• Five VC engineering physics studentsparticipated in a one week, all expense-paidprogram in nanotechnology fabrication trainingat UCSB summer <strong>2005</strong>. The SBDCoperates in partnership withthe Economic DevelopmentCollaborative-<strong>Ventura</strong>County and is one of ninecenters of the regional SmallBusiness Development CenterNetwork. The U.S. SmallBusiness Administration administers the SBDCProgram to provide management assistance tocurrent and prospective small business ownersthrough delivery of up-to-date, reasonablypriced training workshops and free one-ononecounseling in all aspects of small businessmanagement. The SBDC focuses primarilyon existing businesses employing fewer than200 people. During the first eight months ofoperation, nearly 200 individuals and smallbusinesses were provided counseling, and morethan 300 attended workshops.• <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> Community Educationprovides entertaining and informative not-forcreditclasses. Forthe <strong>2005</strong>-2006year, CommunityEducation, a selfsupportingentityof VC, offered524 classes to5,203 communitymembers. Thecourses aredescribed inthe CommunityEducationKaleidoscope,published, in printand online, threetimes a year.• Alternative Text Production Center,(ATPC)• received Chancellor Office approval toimplement “Fee for Service”Braille Production to generateadditional ATPC funds whilesatisfying Braille needs forlearning institutions outsideof the California Community<strong>College</strong> system.• Received a 77% fundingincrease for ATPC’s FY 06-07 budget, from$597,000 to $1,056,000.• Initiated a partnership with Avenal StatePrison to produce E-Text, Braille, and TactileGraphic products. The new workforce processedover 50 E-Text books and began formal Braillecertification with the Library of Congress.• ATPC production continued to grow withover 15,000 Alternative Text (Braille & E-Text)requests processed and over 5,000 text booktitles cataloged for the CCC system.• Foster and Kinship Program The<strong>Ventura</strong> County Foster and Kinship CareEducation teamwork was honored by the StateChancellor’s Office and by their peers with anaward recognizing the exemplary collaborationwithin the three colleges of the VCCCD. Theprogram provides quality education and supportactivities to the caregivers of children and youthin out-of-home care so that these providers maymeet the educational, emotional, behavioraland developmental needs of children and youth.<strong>Ventura</strong> County is the only county in the state withprograms at three community colleges.• Institutional Research Office ofResearch and Evaluation• The region-wide Construction IndustrySummit held in April was attended by 70 peoplefrom construction and labor industries. Fundingwas provided by the Chancellor’s Office of theCalifornia Community <strong>College</strong>s via two grants.• The Survey of Automotive Repair/ServiceProviders was conducted in May/June to providethe Center of Excellence with regional industrydata in support of the Center’s external scan ofthe automotive industry. 335 employers weresurveyed. This provided colleges in the SouthCentral Region with data specific to companiesin their respective service areas.East Campus in Santa Paula• Thanks to generous contributions from theGene Haas Foundation and the UCSB Office ofAcademic Preparation and Equal Opportunity,VC East Campus hosted the 2006 SummerEnrichment Program for students of Santa PaulaHigh School. The two weeks of workshops andfield trips were designed to expand students’educational and occupational horizons. Studentsvisited four college campuses and were exposedto a wide variety of career options, includingVC’s machining program and Haas Automation,Inc. – stressing the connection betweeneducation and career satisfaction.• The East Campus Branch Library andLearning Resources Center was established tohelp students in Santa Paula and Fillmore withon-the-spot research and reference support,face-to-face tutoring, and access to computersand instructional software.• A new program that assigns specialsupplementary instruction tutors to remedialgateway classes to provide extra support forstudents, many of whom are transitioning fromEnglish As Second Language classes, was begun.13

The Dare to Dream scholarship helps fund students’ collegeexpenses, including enrollment fees, textbooks, and room and board. Because ofour outstanding donors, last year nearly $20,000 was awarded to 24 students.Phoenix: Designed for re-entry students who have taken a break from theircollege education and have decided to come back to complete their degree.Every year the Foundation hosts the Phoenix Scholarship Reception. Ninerecipients were chosen to receive this award this year. The next Phoenix Receptionwill be held January 24, 2007.Foundation Merit: Given to both continuing and transfer <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong>students who have excelled during their time at <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong>. This May at ourannual Scholarship Reception, 185 <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> students received FoundationMerit scholarships totaling just under $200,000. Winners get to meet their donorsat this special event.Community: Along with our own scholarships, the Foundation is pleased toadminister nearly 300 Community Scholarships each year given by numerous civic,service, community groups and foundations representing an additional $188,000in scholarships to <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> students.Endowed Scholarship Matching Program: Each year the <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong>Foundation works hard to add to its permanent scholarship endowments. Twoyears ago this commitment was doubled though the establishment of our EndowedScholarship Matching Program where new scholarship endowment gifts arematched dollar-for-dollar by Foundation funds. As a result, this year, twelve newfunds were established.Grants and Special Project SupportSpecial Events: Along with our annual 4thof July Celebration which hosted thousandsof community residents and our Scholarshipevents, two special events were the naming of theEvelyn and Howard Boroughs Library andthe Helen Yunker Auditorium. The namings,approved by the VCCCD Board of Trustees,were made in recognition of the outstandinggenerosity and support given <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong>by Dr. Howard Boroughs and by Miss HelenYunker, a <strong>Ventura</strong> Foundation Board member.Each has demonstrated through years ofinvolvement and generosity how much they careabout <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> and the students we serve.Staff Innovation Grants: The Foundation granted funds directly to <strong>Ventura</strong><strong>College</strong> faculty and staff for improving instruction and student services. $25,000was allocated for these Staff Innovation Grants, with individual grants up to $2,500.Fourteen employees received the grants, such as Librarian Peter Sezzi for the “StudentIdentified Collection Development Project” and Chemistry Professor Joe Selzerfor his “Improving Chemical Education through Video Projection Technology.” Dueto the success of the program, the Foundation has increased funding to $40,000for 2006-2007.Re-Entry & Women’s Center: For many years the Foundation has supportedthe outstanding work done by the Re-entry and Women’s Center, donating over$50,000 in <strong>2005</strong>-2006. The Foundation also supports The Center’s Faith GeorgeTextbook Lending Library and Phoenix Program which provides financial assistanceto Re-Entry students for child-care, transportation, and textbooks.Textbook Bank: The <strong>College</strong> established a new “Textbook Bank,” funded by aFoundation grant of $30,000, comprised of one copy of every textbook needed by<strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> students. The books are kept permanently on reserve in the Evelynand Howard Boroughs Library.Market PlaceThe <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> Foundation augments its direct fund raising revenue by rentingspaces to vendors at our weekly Market Place. This revenue enables the <strong>Ventura</strong><strong>College</strong> Foundation to cover all the administrative fees of the Foundation office sothat 100 percent of all donations go back to <strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> students and our college,with no overhead deducted. Every weekend, the Market Place is set up on the<strong>Ventura</strong> <strong>College</strong> East Campus Way parking lot with over 300 wonderful vendors.15
