Page 2Council CornerMessage From the Board-Julius Germano, Board ChairmanThanks to all of our members that gave us feedback on the discussionof the dress code. I am sure everyone is aware that the Boardunanimously voted to keep the dress code as detailed in the SonterraBoard of Governors StandardOperating Procedures. No denim in the main clubhouse after5pm. This policy will be strictly enforced, and we need the help of all members to make surethat it is adhered to. Be it just a social dinner or an event of some sort, we need to continueto remind members about the policy. It is not fair for the staff to take on the burden ofinforming a member or one of their guests about dress policy. We will reinforce the messagewith signage and reminders in every <strong>newsletter</strong> or notice that goes out to membership.jIt is gratifying to see members who have resigned from the Club at Sonterra inquiring aboutbeing reinstated or coming back. Every club across the country is certainly having their shareof problems marketing membership when you consider the state of the economy, but thanksto the Management, staff, and Mona Koonce and the Ambassadors Club, we certainly aregetting our share of memberships. Of course, we need each members help in recruitmentalso.fWe still can reach the goal of getting the Fitness Center renovation.Let me take an opportunity to urge all golfers to fix divots. In playing the course the lastcouple of weekends, the lack of filled divots was certainly noticeable. The Board of Governors is your voice. Enjoy a great March at the Club atSonterra, and thanks for being a member. This month is March Madness, my favorite time of year. People willgather around televisions rooting for their favorite college basketballteam. Several will share stories of what happened when they went toschool or why they “connected” with a certain team. It is a great timeof year. This year, Sontera wil have our version of March Madnes. No, we won’t have a bunch ofteams playing against each other, but we will have activities that should entice everyone tocome to their Club and enjoy everything we have to offer. Whether you use the Club frequentlyor would like to use the Club more often, we are going to make it easy to do. A fewof these activities include a complimentary beginner boot camp, tennis drills, breakfast tacos, card tournaments and a Girls Night Out. We want you to come up to the Club moreoften this year and connect or re-connect with the Club.To entice you and make it more fun we are having our own pool. There are prizes availablefor each “round” starting with the round of 64. Al you have to do to qualify is come to theclub each week. You can enter the drawing once per day so the more days you visit theClub, the more chances you have to win each week. We will start with the weekend of theround 64 by giving away 64 sleeves of golf or tennis balls to 64 Members. The second week,16 members will win in the round of 16 and win a sweeter prize of one free quick lunch atthe Club. The third and final week of the four Members wil become the “Final Four” andwin a great “4 pack” of Brunch for 2, Quick lunch for 2, their choice of a golf or tennislesson with Jeff Hunter or Michelle Dodier and 2 free exterior/interior car washes. Onelucky Member will be drawn from that final four and will have a chance to trade in their 4pack for one free month of dues….if they pick the team that wins the Championship game.Throughout this year it is my commitment to have more activities going on at the Club andit all starts in March. My hope is to have all our Members sharing stories here and connectingat our Club. Our list ofactivities on and off the course is long anddiverse and we encourage all of you to getinvolved. As the temperatures begin towarm up, I often get many questions fromgolfers regarding spring fertilization and weedcontrol for their home lawns. The best time tofertilize warm season turfgrass such as bermudaor St. Augustine occurs when the grass is actively growing. Theplant must be growing in order to take up the nutrients that are applied.Generally speaking, warm season grasses will begin to actively growwhen the nighttime low temperature and the daytime high temperatureadd up to at least 150. While it is tempting to apply fertilize right now, Iwould suggest waiting a few weeks in order to get the most out of yourapplication. There are several different fertilizers available at local homeimprovement stores and nurseries. The best way to addres your yard’sfertility needs is to have a soil test completed. This is a fairly easy andinexpensive task. For more information on soil testing visit http://soiltesting.tamu.edu/. A balanced fertilizer such as 13 (N)-13 (P)-13 (K)should be fine for most spring applications. Always, be sure to properlycalibrate the spreader and evenly apply the material. Spring is also agood time to apply a pre-emergent herbicide to help eliminate manysummer annual weeds. Fortunately, you can apply a fertilizer that containsthe pre-emergent herbicide, taking care of both applications atonce. A popular formulation is a balanced fertilizer such as a 15-5-10 ora 13-13-13 that contains Barricade (prodiamine). Always be sure to readthe entire label, accurately apply the product, and follow any wateringinstructions.
