1. ABOUT THIS MANUAL...1.1. Why you should read this manualThis manual has been written to help you get the most performance,comfort, enjoyment <strong>and</strong> safety when riding <strong>your</strong> new bike.It's important for you to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>your</strong> new bike, its features <strong>and</strong> itsoperation, so that, from <strong>your</strong> first ride, you get maximum enjoyment<strong>and</strong> maximum safety. By reading this manual before you go out on<strong>your</strong> first ride, you'll know how to get the most from <strong>your</strong> new <strong>bicycle</strong>.It is also important that <strong>your</strong> first ride on a new <strong>bicycle</strong> takes place ina controlled environment, away from cars, obstacles <strong>and</strong> othercyclists.A SPECIAL NOTE FOR PARENTS: It is a tragic fact that most<strong>bicycle</strong> accidents involve children. As a parent or guardian, you bearthe responsibility for the activities <strong>and</strong> safety <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> minor child.Among these responsibilities are to ensure that the <strong>bicycle</strong> which<strong>your</strong> child is riding is properly fitted to the child; that it is in goodrepair <strong>and</strong> safe operating condition; that you <strong>and</strong> <strong>your</strong> child havelearned <strong>and</strong> understood the safe operation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>bicycle</strong>; <strong>and</strong> thatyou <strong>and</strong> <strong>your</strong> child have learned, understood <strong>and</strong> obeyed not onlythe applicable local motor vehicle, <strong>bicycle</strong> <strong>and</strong> traffic laws, but alsothe common sense rules <strong>of</strong> safe <strong>and</strong> responsible bicycling. As aparent, you should read this manual before letting <strong>your</strong> child ride the<strong>bicycle</strong>. We have tried to make this manual interesting <strong>and</strong> instructivefor both you <strong>and</strong> <strong>your</strong> child.Make sure that <strong>your</strong> child always wears an approved <strong>bicycle</strong> helmetwhen riding.GENERAL WARNING: Bicycling can be a hazardousactivity even under the best <strong>of</strong> circumstances. Proper<strong>maintenance</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> is <strong>your</strong> responsibility as ithelps reduce the risk <strong>of</strong> injury. This Manual containsmany "Warnings" <strong>and</strong> "Cautions" concerning the consequences <strong>of</strong>failure to maintain or inspect <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>. Many <strong>of</strong> the Warnings <strong>and</strong>Cautions say "you may lose control <strong>and</strong> fall." As any fall can result inserious injury or even death, we do not repeat the warning <strong>of</strong>possible injury or death whenever the risk <strong>of</strong> falling is mentioned.When all else fails… it's never too late to read the manualEven if you've been riding a bike all <strong>your</strong> life, you probably need anupdate on <strong>your</strong> bicycling habits, knowledge <strong>and</strong> assumptions. Why?Because <strong>bicycle</strong>s are going through some pretty dramatic changes inthe technology that affect function, h<strong>and</strong>ling, comfort, performance<strong>and</strong> safety.3

3. WHAT KIND OF A BIKE IS IT?Adult <strong>bicycle</strong>s can be broadly categorized into four types, accordingto the intended use for which the bike was designed: Road Bikes,Mountain Bikes, Cross Bikes <strong>and</strong> City or Cruiser Bikes. While thereis a lot <strong>of</strong> use overlap in bike design, each type <strong>of</strong> bike is designed toprovide optimum performance, comfort <strong>and</strong> safety under specific useconditions. Which type is <strong>your</strong> new bike?3.1. The Road Bikesprinting, <strong>and</strong> to position the rider in an aerodynamic “tuck” forspeed. Its high-pressure, narrow tires reduce rolling resistance to aminimum. But: The ride tends to be too stiff for comfort on roughersurfaces. The frame <strong>and</strong> components may be too light to take thepounding <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-road excursions. The h<strong>and</strong>lebars position the rider ina way that many find uncomfortable for more casual riding. Thenarrow tires are unsuitable for loose surfaces.WEIGHT LIMIT Road bikes 125kg.3.2. The Mountain BikeSometimes called a racing bike because it is derived from the bikesused by <strong>bicycle</strong> road racers <strong>and</strong> triathletes, the road bike is for fasttravel, hard training <strong>and</strong> competition on paved surfaces. It is thelightest, most aerodynamic <strong>and</strong> "fastest" type <strong>of</strong> bike. Because it isgenerally ridden on relatively smooth paved roads, its frame is madeas stiff <strong>and</strong> light as possible, <strong>and</strong> its frame geometry is designed togive it quick, very precise response to rider input. Its components,especially the wheels, tend to be lighter than those for othercategories, again because they don't get banged around as much. Itsdropped h<strong>and</strong>lebars, sometimes equipped with aero bar extensions,are designed to give the rider good leverage for climbing <strong>and</strong>The Mountain Bike is designed to give the rider greater control <strong>and</strong>durability on a wide variety <strong>of</strong> harsh terrain. Everything about theMountain Bike is more rugged. Its frame geometry providesadditional ground clearance <strong>and</strong> allows you to shift <strong>your</strong> weight tochange the balance <strong>of</strong> the bike as terrain conditions dem<strong>and</strong>. Itswide, high-volume tyres absorb shock <strong>and</strong> provide better, morestable control with loose or slippery surfaces. Its wide-range gearing,usually with 18 or more speeds, provides the right choice for almostany conditions. Many Mountain Bikes come equipped withsuspension systems that help absorb the shocks <strong>and</strong> vibrations <strong>of</strong>rough trails.6


But: A Mountain Bike is heavier than a road bike. Its wide tires havegreater rolling resistance than road bike tires. While morecomfortable for many people, the rider's more upright riding positionis aerodynamically inefficient. A Mountain Bike is not the best choicefor long fast rides on paved surfaces.NOTE: While the rugged appearance <strong>of</strong> Mountain bikes mightsuggest that they are indestructible, they are not. They are tough <strong>and</strong>sturdy; but as with any machine, abuse will soon take a toll on theirability to perform.By changing tires, h<strong>and</strong>lebars <strong>and</strong> shifting <strong>and</strong> braking controls, <strong>your</strong>dealer can alter a Cross Bike's performance range to favor eitherpaved road performance or dirt road performance, to suit <strong>your</strong>intended use.WEIGHT LIMIT Cross Bikes 120kg.3.4. The City BikeWEIGHT LIMIT Mountain Bikes 130kg.3.3. The Cross BikeAlso <strong>of</strong>ten called a Hybrid, Cross Terrain Bike or Fitness Bike, it islike a Swiss Army Knife: it's a versatile tool that does many thingswell. The Cross Bike is a good choice for the rider who isn't lookingfor the ultimate in performance either on or <strong>of</strong>f the road, but whowants a bike that will h<strong>and</strong>le paved roads, bike paths, graded firetrails <strong>and</strong> dirt roads. It's not as fast on pavement as a Road Bike; noris it designed for hard <strong>of</strong>f-road use on “single track” or rocky, rutted,rugged terrain like a Mountain Bike.Also <strong>of</strong>ten called a Cruiser, it is designed for comfortable, low<strong>maintenance</strong>,casual riding. It is <strong>of</strong>ten equipped with three, five,seven or more gears that are housed in the rear wheel hub. Its frameis designed for comfort rather than for high performance, <strong>and</strong> its fattires are designed for solid, rather than loose, surfaces. The Cruiseris ideal for around town, for gently rolling or flat rural roads, for a ridearound the park, or for a quick trip to the store.WEIGHT LIMIT City Bikes 130kg.WARNING: Riding <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> in ways that it was not intended for(i.e. riding <strong>your</strong> road bike on single track or rugged terrain) can causeyou to lose control <strong>and</strong> fall. Only ride <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> in the manner thatit was intended for.7


4. FIT AND SAFETY4.1. FitMake sure the bike fits. A bike that's too big or too small for the rideris harder to control <strong>and</strong> can be uncomfortable.WARNING: If <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> does not fit properly, you may lose control<strong>and</strong> fall. If <strong>your</strong> new bike doesn't fit, ask <strong>your</strong> dealer to exchange itbefore you ride it.4.1.1. Frame sizeYour dealer will have recommended the best frame size for you,based on the information provided. If you picked <strong>your</strong> own bike at thedealership, <strong>your</strong> dealer took the time to fit you to the correct framesize at the time. If someone else selected the bike for you, as a gift,for example, it's important for you to make sure that it fits before <strong>your</strong>ide it.The first check for correct size is st<strong>and</strong>over height. St<strong>and</strong>over heightis the basic element <strong>of</strong> bike fit. It is the distance from the ground tothe top <strong>of</strong> the top tube at that point where <strong>your</strong> crotch would be if youwere straddling the bike by st<strong>and</strong>ing half way between the saddle<strong>and</strong> the h<strong>and</strong>lebar stem. To check for safe st<strong>and</strong>over height, straddlethe bike while wearing the kind <strong>of</strong> shoes in which you'll be riding, <strong>and</strong>bounce vigorously on <strong>your</strong> heels. If <strong>your</strong> crotch touches the frame,the bike is too big for you.Don't even ride the bike around the block. A bike that you ride onlyon paved surfaces <strong>and</strong> never, ever take <strong>of</strong>f-road, should give you aminimum st<strong>and</strong>over height clearance <strong>of</strong> one to two inches. A bikethat you'll ride on unpaved surfaces should give you a minimum <strong>of</strong>three inches <strong>of</strong> st<strong>and</strong>over height clearance. A bike that you'll use forreal mountain biking on difficult, rough terrain should give you four ormore inches <strong>of</strong> clearance.4.1.2. Saddle positionCorrect saddle adjustment is an important factor in getting the mostperformance <strong>and</strong> comfort from <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>. Your dealer will havepositioned the saddle where experience tells him most people find itcomfortable. If you find the saddle position is not comfortable, returnto <strong>your</strong> Authorized Dealer for assistance or, make the adjustments<strong>your</strong>self.8


Look at Figures 6A, B <strong>and</strong> C, <strong>and</strong> determine which one illustrates thetype <strong>of</strong> saddle attachment on <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>.A saddle can be adjusted in three directions:4.1.2.a. Up <strong>and</strong> down adjustmentYour leg length determines the correct saddle height. The saddle isat the correct height for you when, while seated on the saddle <strong>and</strong>with the crank arms parallel to the seat tube, you can just reach the“down” pedal with one heel. To check for correct saddle height:• sit on the saddle;• place one heel on a pedal;• rotate the crank until the pedal with <strong>your</strong> heel on it is in the downposition <strong>and</strong> the crank arm is parallel to the seat tube.Under no circumstances should you be able to see this marking afteradjusting <strong>your</strong> seat post height. (Fig. 8).WARNING: If <strong>your</strong> seat post projects from the frame beyond theMinimum Insertion or Maximum Extension mark (see Fig. 8) the seatpost may break, which could cause you to lose control <strong>and</strong> fall.INTEGRATED Seat post:If <strong>your</strong> leg is not completely straight <strong>and</strong> just touching the centre <strong>of</strong>the pedal, <strong>your</strong> saddle height needs to be adjusted. If <strong>your</strong> hips mustrock for the heel to reach the pedal, the saddle is too high. If <strong>your</strong> legis bent at the knee with <strong>your</strong> heel on the pedal, the saddle is too low.To adjust the saddle height, loosen the seat binder bolt (Fig. 7; seealso Section 6.2 on Seat Post Quick Releases) <strong>and</strong> move the seatpost up or down as required. Then, make sure that the saddle isparallel to the top tube <strong>of</strong> the bike, <strong>and</strong> retighten the seat binder bolttight enough so that you cannot twist the saddle out <strong>of</strong> alignment.Check the adjustment as described above. Your seat post will bemarked with a scribed or engraved line marked "minimum insertion"or "maximum extension."All <strong>Ridley</strong> frames with an integrated seat post must be cut accordingto the following directions. Only an experienced mechanic shouldperform this operation:Measure the saddle height on <strong>your</strong> existing <strong>bicycle</strong>. Measure thisdistance from the center <strong>of</strong> the bottom bracket to the top <strong>of</strong> thesaddle, in a straight line with the seat tube.Mount the saddle onto the <strong>Ridley</strong> saddle clamp, <strong>and</strong> onto the frame,making sure to insert the 3mm spacer into the seat clamp.9


IMPORTANT: there should always be at least 1 x 3mm spacer in theseat clamp at all times. Failure to do so may result in prematuredamage to the seat tube <strong>and</strong> void <strong>your</strong> warranty.With the saddle <strong>and</strong> seat clamp fully installed on the new frame,measure this new distance from the center <strong>of</strong> the bottom bracket tothe top <strong>of</strong> the saddle. Subtract the distance <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> old position fromthe new distance on the <strong>Ridley</strong>. This difference is the amount youmust cut from the seat tube.Remove the seat clamp <strong>and</strong> measurethe distance to cut from the top <strong>of</strong> the seat tube. Using the <strong>Ridley</strong>cutting guide (supplied with frame) <strong>and</strong> a fine-tooth cutting sawsuitable for cutting carbon fiber, cut the excess seat tube from theframe. Clean the freshly cut area with a file to remove any burrs <strong>and</strong>splinters.You can now mount <strong>your</strong> seat clamp <strong>and</strong> saddle <strong>and</strong> begin riding.Make sure to tighten the seat clamp bolt to maximum 4Nm. You caninsert additional spacers if you wish to adjust the height <strong>of</strong> thesaddle, however make sure that some part <strong>of</strong> the seat tube is alwaysvisible in the seat clamp window – failure to do so may cause theseat clamp to be unstable <strong>and</strong> prematurely damage the seat tube.4.1.2.b. Front <strong>and</strong> back adjustmentLoosen the saddle clamping mechanism (see Fig. 6a, b or c) <strong>and</strong>slide the saddle backwards or forwards on its rails. Start with thesaddle clamped in about the middle, then adjust forwards orbackwards until you find the position that is most comfortable for you.4.1.2.c. Saddle tilt adjustmentMost people prefer a horizontal saddle; but some riders prefer tohave the saddle nose tilted up just a little, <strong>and</strong> others prefer it to betilted down just a little. You can adjust saddle tilt by loosening thesaddle clamping mechanism <strong>and</strong> tilting the saddle to the desiredposition.After making these adjustments, the saddle clamping mechanismshould be retightened until secure. One method for testing whetheryou have tightened the saddle adjusting mechanism securely is t<strong>of</strong>irmly grasp both ends <strong>of</strong> the saddle <strong>and</strong> attempt to rock the saddlefront to back or to twist the saddle side to side. There should be nosaddle movement in any direction. If, after making this adjustment,the saddle still moves in any direction, return to <strong>your</strong> AuthorizedDealer for assistance.Very small changes in saddle position can have a substantial effecton performance <strong>and</strong> comfort. Consequently, whenever you make achange to <strong>your</strong> saddle position, make only one directional change ata time, <strong>and</strong> make the changes in small increments until you havefound the position at which you are most comfortable.WARNING: After any saddle adjustment, be sure to tighten thesaddle adjusting mechanism properly before riding. A loose saddleclamp or seat post binder can cause damage to the seat post, or cancause you to lose control <strong>and</strong> fall. A correctly tightened saddleadjusting mechanism will allow no saddle movement in any direction.Periodically check to make sure that the saddle adjusting mechanismis properly tightened.If, in spite <strong>of</strong> carefully adjusting the saddle height, tilt <strong>and</strong> fore-<strong>and</strong>-aftposition, <strong>your</strong> saddle is still uncomfortable, you may need a differentsaddle design. Saddles, like people, come in many different shapes,sizes <strong>and</strong> resilience. Your Authorized Dealer can help you select a10


must fit correctly, be worn correctly <strong>and</strong> be properly secured to do itsreal job. Ask <strong>your</strong> dealer to help you with the fit <strong>and</strong> adjustment <strong>of</strong><strong>your</strong> helmet, <strong>and</strong> refer to the owner's manual provided with thehelmet.WARNING: Always wear a helmet when riding <strong>your</strong> bike. Alwayskeep the chinstrap securely buckled. Refer to <strong>your</strong> helmet owner'smanual for additional information. Failure to wear an approvedhelmet may result in serious injury or death.4.2.2. ReflectorsReflectors are important safety devices that are designed as anintegral part <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>. Do not remove the reflectors from <strong>your</strong><strong>bicycle</strong>. Reflectors are not a substitute for lights, always equip <strong>your</strong><strong>bicycle</strong> with lights <strong>and</strong> make sure <strong>your</strong> bike is equipped incorrespondence with <strong>your</strong> local laws.For U.S. only, federal regulations require every <strong>bicycle</strong> to beequipped with front, rear, wheel <strong>and</strong> pedal reflectors. The U.S.Consumer Products Safety Commission specifies the size,performance <strong>and</strong> location <strong>of</strong> each reflector. The reflectors aredesigned to pick up <strong>and</strong> reflect streetlights <strong>and</strong> car lights in a waythat helps you to be seen <strong>and</strong> recognized as a moving cyclist.CAUTION: Check reflectors <strong>and</strong> their mounting brackets regularly tomake sure that they are clean, straight, unbroken <strong>and</strong> securelymounted. Have <strong>your</strong> dealer replace damaged reflectors <strong>and</strong>straighten or tighten any that are bent or loose.WARNING: Do not remove the reflectors from <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>. They arean integral part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>bicycle</strong>'s safety system. Removing thereflectors may reduce <strong>your</strong> visibility to others using the road. Beingstruck by other vehicles <strong>of</strong>ten results in serious injury or death.Remember: reflectors are not a substitute for lights. Always equip<strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> with lights.4.2.3. LightsIf you ride <strong>your</strong> bike after dusk, <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> must be equipped withlights so that you can see the road <strong>and</strong> avoid road hazards, <strong>and</strong> sothat others can see you. Vehicle laws treat <strong>bicycle</strong>s like any othervehicle. That means you must have a white front <strong>and</strong> a red rear lightoperating if you are riding after dusk. Your bike dealer canrecommend a battery or generator powered lighting systemappropriate to <strong>your</strong> needs.WARNING: Reflectors are not a substitute for proper lights. It is <strong>your</strong>responsibility to equip <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> with all lights. Riding at dawn, atdusk, at night or at other times <strong>of</strong> poor visibility without a <strong>bicycle</strong>lighting system which meets local <strong>and</strong> state laws <strong>and</strong> withoutreflectors is dangerous <strong>and</strong> may result in serious injury or death.4.2.4. Pedals(See also Section 6.5 <strong>and</strong> 6.6.) Some higher performance model <strong>bicycle</strong>scome equipped with pedals that have sharp <strong>and</strong> potentially dangeroussurfaces. These surfaces are designed to add safety by increasingtraction or grip between the rider's shoe <strong>and</strong> the <strong>bicycle</strong> pedal. If <strong>your</strong><strong>bicycle</strong> has this type <strong>of</strong> high-performance pedal you must take extra careto avoid serious injury from the pedals' sharp surfaces. Based on <strong>your</strong>riding style or skill level, you may prefer a less aggressive pedal design.Your dealer can show you a number <strong>of</strong> options <strong>and</strong> make suitablerecommendations.WARNING: When turning at slow speeds, it may be possible for <strong>your</strong> toeclip or foot to contact the front wheel. This could cause you to lose control<strong>and</strong> fall. Avoid pedaling while turning at slow speed.12


4.2.5. Eye protectionAny kind <strong>of</strong> riding, but particularly <strong>of</strong>f-road riding, involves airbornedirt, dust <strong>and</strong> bugs, so it's a good idea always to ride with protectiveeyewear – tinted when the sun is bright, clear when it's not. Mostbike shops carry protective fashion eyewear, some withinterchangeable lens systems.4.3. Mechanical Safety CheckHere is a simple, sixty second mechanical safety check that youshould get in the habit <strong>of</strong> carrying out every time you're about to geton a bike.WARNING: Any loose part or bolt should always be tightenedaccording to the manufacturer’s instructions <strong>and</strong> torquespecifications for that fastener or part.inflated, <strong>and</strong> adjust if necessary. See Section 6.7.1 for details <strong>and</strong>recommended tire pressures.Tires in good shape? Spin each wheel slowly <strong>and</strong> look for cuts in thetread <strong>and</strong> sidewall. Replace damaged tires before riding the bike.Wheels true? Spin each wheel <strong>and</strong> check for brake clearance <strong>and</strong>side-to-side wobble. If a wheel wobbles side to side or hits the brakepods, take the bike to a qualified bike shop to have the wheel trued.CAUTION: Wheels must be true for the brakes to work effectively.Wheel truing is a skill that requires special tools <strong>and</strong> experience. Donot attempt to true a wheel unless you have the knowledge <strong>and</strong> toolsneeded to do the job correctly. Consult <strong>your</strong> Authorized Dealer forassistance.4.3.1. Nuts, bolts & strapsLift the front wheel <strong>of</strong>f the ground by two or three inches, then let itbounce on the ground. Anything sound, feel or look loose? Do aquick visual <strong>and</strong> physical inspection <strong>of</strong> the whole bike. Any looseparts or accessories? If so, secure them. If you're not sure, consult<strong>your</strong> Authorized Dealer for assistance.4.3.2. Tires & WheelsTires correctly inflated? Check by putting one h<strong>and</strong> on the saddle,one on the intersection <strong>of</strong> the h<strong>and</strong>lebars <strong>and</strong> stem, then bouncing<strong>your</strong> weight on the bike while looking at tire deflection. Comparewhat you see with how it looks when you know the tires are correctly13


4.3.3. BrakesSqueeze the brake levers. Are the brake quick releases closed? Isthe straddle cable securely engaged? Are the brake shoescontacting the wheel rim within an inch <strong>of</strong> brake lever movement?Can you apply full braking force at the levers without having themtouch the h<strong>and</strong>lebar? If not, <strong>your</strong> brakes need adjustment. Do notride the bike until the brakes are properly adjusted. See Sections6.3.1 <strong>and</strong> 6.3.2 for details.WARNING: Riding with improperly adjusted brakes or worn brakeshoes is dangerous <strong>and</strong> can result in serious injury or death.4.3.4. ChainFor single speed/fixed gear <strong>bicycle</strong>s, does the chain have enoughtension? To check, push up on the bottom <strong>of</strong> the chain. Thereshould be ¼ to ½ inch (6-12mm) vertical chain movement.WARNING: Riding with too little chain tension can cause the chainto come <strong>of</strong>f <strong>of</strong> the chain ring or sprocket, which can cause damage tothe <strong>bicycle</strong> <strong>and</strong> cause you to lose control <strong>and</strong> fall.4.3.5. Quick ReleasesAre the front wheel, rear wheel <strong>and</strong> seat post quick releases properlyadjusted <strong>and</strong> in the locked position? See Section 6.1 <strong>and</strong> 6.2 fordetails.WARNING: Riding with an improperly adjusted wheel quick releasecan cause the wheel to wobble or disengage from the <strong>bicycle</strong>, whichcan cause damage to the <strong>bicycle</strong> <strong>and</strong> serious injury or death.4.3.6. H<strong>and</strong>lebar <strong>and</strong> saddle alignmentAre the saddle <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>lebar stem correctly parallel to the bike's toptube <strong>and</strong> tight enough so that you can't twist them out <strong>of</strong> alignment?If not, tighten the stem, h<strong>and</strong>lebar, seatpost <strong>and</strong> saddle bolts <strong>and</strong>quick release.4.3.7. H<strong>and</strong>lebar ends/extensionsAre the h<strong>and</strong>lebar grips secure <strong>and</strong> in good condition? If not, replacethem. Are the h<strong>and</strong>lebar ends <strong>and</strong> extensions plugged? If not, plugthem before you ride. Are the bar ends or extensions tight enoughthat you cannot twist them? If not, tighten them.WARNING: Loose or damaged h<strong>and</strong>lebar grips or extensions cancause you to lose control <strong>and</strong> fall. Unplugged h<strong>and</strong>lebars orextensions can cut <strong>your</strong> body <strong>and</strong> can cause serious injury in anotherwise minor accident.WARNING: H<strong>and</strong>ling <strong>and</strong> braking control can be adversely affectedby using h<strong>and</strong>lebar ends or extensions, which can cause you to losecontrol <strong>and</strong> fall. Take extreme care when using h<strong>and</strong>lebarends/extensions.OK: now buckle on <strong>your</strong> helmet (see page 15) <strong>and</strong> enjoy <strong>your</strong> ride.14


5. RIDING SAFELY AND RESPONSIBLYNOTE: Like any sport, bicycling involves risk <strong>of</strong> injury <strong>and</strong> damage.By choosing to ride a <strong>bicycle</strong>, you assume the responsibility for thatrisk. Not the people who sold you the bike. Not the people who madeit. Not the people who distribute it. Not the people who manage ormaintain the roads or trails you ride on. You. So you need to know -<strong>and</strong> to practice - the rules <strong>of</strong> safe <strong>and</strong> responsible riding.5.1. The Basics1. Always do the Mechanical Safely Check(Section 4.3) before you get on a bike.2. Always wear a helmet that is in compliancewith ASTM, Snell, CPSC or CE st<strong>and</strong>ards.(See fig. 10)3. Be careful to keep body parts, clothing <strong>and</strong>other objects away from the sharp teeth <strong>of</strong>chainrings, the moving chain, the turningpedals <strong>and</strong> cranks, <strong>and</strong> the spinning wheels.4. Always wear shoes that will stay on <strong>your</strong>feet <strong>and</strong> will grip the pedals. Never ridebarefoot or wearing s<strong>and</strong>als.5. Be thoroughly familiar with the controls <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>.6. Wear bright, visible clothing that is not so loose that it can catch onmoving parts <strong>of</strong> the <strong>bicycle</strong> or be snagged by objects at the side <strong>of</strong>the road or frail.7. Don't jump with <strong>your</strong> bike. Jumping a bike, particularly a BMX ormountain bike, can be fun, but it puts incredible stress on everythingfrom <strong>your</strong> spokes to <strong>your</strong> pedals. Perhaps most vulnerable tojumping related damage is <strong>your</strong> front fork. Riders who insist onjumping their bikes risk serious damage, to their <strong>bicycle</strong>s as well asto themselves.8. Think about <strong>your</strong> speed, <strong>and</strong> keep <strong>your</strong> speed at a level that isconsistent with conditions <strong>and</strong> <strong>your</strong> own riding ability. Always keep inmind that there is a direct relationship between speed <strong>and</strong> control,<strong>and</strong> between speed <strong>and</strong> component stress. The greater the speed,the less control. The greater the speed, the greater the stress youmay place on the components <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>.WARNING: Jumping, ramp riding, trick riding, riding on severeterrain or riding with heavy loads may damage the <strong>bicycle</strong> or maycause serious injury or death.5.2. Rules <strong>of</strong> the Road1. Learn the local <strong>bicycle</strong> laws <strong>and</strong> regulations. Many communitieshave special regulations about licensing <strong>of</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>s, riding onsidewalks, laws regulating bike path <strong>and</strong> trail use, <strong>and</strong> so on. Manynations have helmet laws, child carrier laws <strong>and</strong> special <strong>bicycle</strong> trafficlaws. In the U.S. <strong>and</strong> in most foreign countries, a cyclist is required toobey the same traffic laws as the driver <strong>of</strong> a car or motorcycle. It’s<strong>your</strong> responsibility to know <strong>and</strong> obey the laws.2. You are sharing the road or the path with others - motorists,pedestrians <strong>and</strong> other cyclists. Respect their rights, <strong>and</strong> be tolerant ifthey infringe on <strong>your</strong>s.15


3. Ride defensively. Assume that the people with whom you aresharing the road are so absorbed with what they are doing <strong>and</strong>where they are going that they are oblivious to you.4. Look ahead <strong>of</strong> where you're going, <strong>and</strong> be ready to avoid:• Vehicles slowing or turning in front <strong>of</strong> you, entering the road, or <strong>your</strong>lane ahead <strong>of</strong> you, or coming up behind you.• Parked car doors opening in front <strong>of</strong> you.• Pedestrians stepping out in front <strong>of</strong> you.• Children playing near the road.• Pot holes, sewer grating, railway tracks, expansion joints, road orpavement construction, debris <strong>and</strong> other obstructions that couldcause you to swerve into traffic, catch <strong>your</strong> wheel or otherwise causeyou to lose control <strong>and</strong> have an accident.• The many other hazards <strong>and</strong> distractions which can occur on a<strong>bicycle</strong> ride.5. Ride in designated bike lanes, on designated bike paths or on theright side <strong>of</strong> the road, in the same direction as car traffic <strong>and</strong> as closeto the edge <strong>of</strong> the road as possible.6. Stop at stop signs <strong>and</strong> traffic lights; slow down <strong>and</strong> look both waysat street intersections. Remember that a <strong>bicycle</strong> always loses in acollision with a motor vehicle, so be prepared to yield even if youhave the right <strong>of</strong> way.7. <strong>Use</strong> h<strong>and</strong> signals for turning <strong>and</strong> stopping. Learn the local vehiclecode for the correct signals.8. Never ride with headphones. They mask traffic sounds <strong>and</strong>emergency vehicle sirens, distract you from concentrating on what'sgoing on around you, <strong>and</strong> their wires can tangle in the moving parts<strong>of</strong> the <strong>bicycle</strong>, causing you to lose control.9. Never carry a passenger, unless it is a small child wearing anapproved helmet <strong>and</strong> secured in a correctly mounted child carrier.10. Never carry anything that obstructs <strong>your</strong> vision or <strong>your</strong> completecontrol <strong>of</strong> the <strong>bicycle</strong>, or which could become entangled in themoving parts <strong>of</strong> the <strong>bicycle</strong>.11. Never hitch a ride by holding on to another vehicle.12. Don't do stunts, wheelies or jumps. They can cause you injury<strong>and</strong> damage <strong>your</strong> bike.13. Don't weave through traffic or make any moves that may surprisepeople with whom you are sharing the road.14. Observe <strong>and</strong> yield the right <strong>of</strong> way.15. Never ride <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> while under the influence <strong>of</strong> alcohol ordrugs.16. If possible, avoid riding in bad weather, when visibility isobscured, at dusk or in the dark, or when extremely tired. Each <strong>of</strong>these conditions increases the risk <strong>of</strong> accident.16


5.3. Rules <strong>of</strong> the Trail1. Be prepared. If something goes wrong while you're riding <strong>of</strong>f-road,the closest help may be miles away. See Section 8 for the equipmentyou should take with you on an <strong>of</strong>f-road ride.2. Don't ride alone in remote areas. Even when riding with others,make sure that someone knows where you're going <strong>and</strong> when youexpect to be back.3. Surface hazards make <strong>of</strong>f-road riding much more difficult <strong>and</strong>therefore more dangerous than riding on paved roads. Start slowly<strong>and</strong> build up <strong>your</strong> skills on easier terrain before tackling the moredifficult ones.4. Learn <strong>and</strong> obey the local laws regulating where <strong>and</strong> how you canride <strong>of</strong>f-road, <strong>and</strong> respect private property. Don't ride where you arenot welcome or where you are not allowed.5. You are sharing the trail with others - hikers, equestrians, <strong>and</strong>other cyclists. Respect their rights, <strong>and</strong> be tolerant if theyinconvenience you.6. Yield right <strong>of</strong> way to pedestrians <strong>and</strong> animals. Ride in a way thatdoes not frighten or endanger them, <strong>and</strong> stay far enough away sothat their unexpected moves don't endanger you.7. You may be riding in sensitive habitat, so stay on the designatedtrail. Don't contribute to erosion by riding in mud or with unnecessarysliding. Don't disturb wildlife or livestock; <strong>and</strong> don't disturb theecosystem by cutting <strong>your</strong> own trail through vegetation or streams.8. It is <strong>your</strong> responsibility to minimize <strong>your</strong> impact on theenvironment. Ride accordingly. Leave things as you found them; <strong>and</strong>always take out everything you brought in.5.4. Downhill Mountain BikingTo ride downhill at speed or in competition is to voluntarily assumean increased risk <strong>of</strong> injury or death. When riding downhill, you canreach speeds seen on motorcycles, <strong>and</strong> therefore face similarhazards <strong>and</strong> risks. Wear appropriate safety gear, including anapproved full-face helmet, full finger gloves, <strong>and</strong> body armor. Have<strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> <strong>and</strong> equipment carefully inspected by a qualifiedmechanic <strong>and</strong> be sure it is in perfect condition. Consult with expertriders <strong>and</strong> race <strong>of</strong>ficials on conditions <strong>and</strong> equipment advisable at thesite where you plan to ride.Ultimately, it is <strong>your</strong> responsibility to have proper equipment <strong>and</strong> tobe familiar with course conditions.WARNING: Downhill mountain biking can lead to serious accidents.Wear appropriate safety gear <strong>and</strong> be sure <strong>your</strong> bike is in perfectcondition. Follow all instructions above. Even with state-<strong>of</strong>-the-artprotective safety gear, you could be seriously injured or killed whendoing downhill mountain biking. If <strong>your</strong> bike has suspension, theincreased speed you may develop also increases <strong>your</strong> risk. Whenbraking, the front <strong>of</strong> a suspended bike dips. You could lose control<strong>and</strong> fall if <strong>your</strong> skill is not up to h<strong>and</strong>ling this system. Get to knowhow to h<strong>and</strong>le <strong>your</strong> suspension system safely before trying anydownhill or very fast mountain biking.17


5.5. Wet Weather RidingWARNING: Wet weather impairs traction, braking <strong>and</strong> visibility, bothfor the bicyclist <strong>and</strong> for other vehicles sharing the road. The risk <strong>of</strong>accident is dramatically increased in wet conditions.Under wet conditions, the stopping power <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> brakes (as well asthe brakes <strong>of</strong> other vehicles sharing the road) is dramatically reduced<strong>and</strong> <strong>your</strong> tires don't grip nearly as well. This makes it harder tocontrol speed <strong>and</strong> easier to lose control. To make sure that you canslow down <strong>and</strong> stop safely in wet conditions, ride more slowly <strong>and</strong>apply <strong>your</strong> brakes earlier <strong>and</strong> more gradually than you would undernormal, dry conditions. See also Section 6.3.5.6. Night RidingRiding a <strong>bicycle</strong> at night is a lot times more dangerous than ridingduring the day. Therefore, children should never ride at dusk or atnight. Adults should not ride at dusk or at night unless it is absolutelynecessary.WARNING: Riding at dusk, after dark or at times <strong>of</strong> poor visibilitywithout a <strong>bicycle</strong> lighting system that meets local <strong>and</strong> state laws <strong>and</strong>without reflectors is dangerous <strong>and</strong> can result in serious injury ordeath.Even if you have excellent night vision, many <strong>of</strong> the people withwhom you're sharing the road don't. A cyclist is very difficult formotorists <strong>and</strong> pedestrians to see at dusk, at night, or at other times<strong>of</strong> poor visibility. If you must ride under these conditions, check <strong>and</strong>be sure you comply with all local laws about night riding; follow theRules <strong>of</strong> the Road <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Trail even more carefully, <strong>and</strong> you musttake the following additional precautions:Before riding at dusk or at nightTake the following steps to make <strong>your</strong>self more visible:• Make sure that <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> is equipped with correctly positioned<strong>and</strong> securely mounted reflectors (see Section 4.2).• Purchase <strong>and</strong> install an adequate battery or generator poweredhead <strong>and</strong> tail light.• Wear light colored, reflective clothing <strong>and</strong> accessories, such as areflective vest, reflective arm <strong>and</strong> leg b<strong>and</strong>s, reflective stripes on <strong>your</strong>helmet, flashing lights ... any reflective device or light source thatmoves will help you get the attention <strong>of</strong> approaching motorists,pedestrians <strong>and</strong> other traffic.• Make sure <strong>your</strong> clothing or anything you may be carrying on the<strong>bicycle</strong> does not obstruct a reflector or light.While riding at dusk or at night• Ride slowly.• Avoid areas <strong>of</strong> heavy traffic, dark areas, <strong>and</strong> roads with speed limitsover 35 mph/km.• Avoid road hazards.• If possible, ride on routes already familiar to you.18


6. HOW THINGS WORKIt’s important to <strong>your</strong> performance, enjoyment <strong>and</strong> safety tounderst<strong>and</strong> how things work on <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>. Even if you're anexperienced bicyclist, don't assume that the way things work on <strong>your</strong>new bike is the same as how they work on older bikes. Be sure toread - <strong>and</strong> to underst<strong>and</strong> - this section <strong>of</strong> the Manual. If you haveeven the slightest doubt as to whether you underst<strong>and</strong> something,talk to <strong>your</strong> dealer.6.1. Wheel Quick ReleaseWARNING: Riding with an improperly adjusted wheel quick releasecan allow the wheel to wobble or disengage from the <strong>bicycle</strong>, causingdamage to the <strong>bicycle</strong>, <strong>and</strong> serious injury or death to the rider.Therefore, it is essential that you:1) Ask <strong>your</strong> dealer to help you make sure you know how to install<strong>and</strong> remove <strong>your</strong> wheel safely.is critical that you underst<strong>and</strong> how it works <strong>and</strong> how to use itproperly.CAUTION: The full force <strong>of</strong> the cam action is needed to clamp thewheel securely. Holding the nut with one h<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> turning the leverlike a wing nut with the other h<strong>and</strong> until everything is as tight as youcan get it will not clamp the wheel safely in the dropouts.6.1.1. Adjusting the quick release mechanismThe wheel hub is clamped in place by the force <strong>of</strong> the quick releasecam pushing against one dropout <strong>and</strong> pulling the tension adjustingnut, by way <strong>of</strong> the skewer, against the other dropout. The amount <strong>of</strong>clamping force is controlled by the tension adjusting nut. Turning thetension adjusting nut clockwise while keeping the cam lever fromrotating increases clamping force; turning it counterclockwise whilekeeping the cam lever from rotating reduces clamping force. Lessthan half a turn <strong>of</strong> the tension adjusting nut can make the differencebetween safe clamping force <strong>and</strong> unsafe clamping force.2) Underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> apply the correct technique for clamping <strong>your</strong>wheel in place with a quick release.3) Each time, before you ride the bike, check that the wheel issecurely clamped.Invented in the 1930s to allow quick, easy wheel removal without theneed for tools, the <strong>bicycle</strong> wheel quick release has become st<strong>and</strong>ardequipment on most recreational, sports <strong>and</strong> competition <strong>bicycle</strong>s.While it looks like a long bolt with a lever on one end <strong>and</strong> a nut onthe other, the wheel quick release uses a cam action to clamp thebike's wheel in place (see fig. 11). Because <strong>of</strong> its adjustable nature, it19

Front Wheel Secondary RetentionDevicesMany <strong>bicycle</strong>s have front forks that utilize a secondary wheelretention device to keep the wheel from disengaging if the quickrelease is incorrectly adjusted. Secondary retention devices are not asubstitute for correct quick release adjustment.Secondary retention devices fall into two basic categories:a) The clip-on type is an accessory part that the manufacturer addsto the front wheel hub or front fork.b) The integral type is molded, cast or machined into the outer faces<strong>of</strong> the front fork dropouts.Ask <strong>your</strong> dealer to explain the particular secondary retention deviceon <strong>your</strong> bike.WARNING: Removing or disabling the secondary retention device isextremely dangerous <strong>and</strong> may lead to serious injury or death. It alsomay void the warranty.6.1.3. Removing or Installing Quick ReleaseWheels6.1.3.a. Removing a Quick Release Front Wheel(1) Open up the brake shoes.(2) Rotate the wheel's quick-release lever from the locked orCLOSED position to the OPEN position (Fig.12 & 13).(3) If <strong>your</strong> front fork does not have a secondary retention device, goto step 5.(4) If <strong>your</strong> front fork has a clip-on typesecondary retention device, disengageit <strong>and</strong> go to step (5). If <strong>your</strong> front forkhas an integral secondary retentiondevice, loosen the tension adjusting nutabout six full turns.(5) Raise the front wheel a few inches<strong>of</strong>f the ground <strong>and</strong> tap the top <strong>of</strong> thewheel with the palm <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> h<strong>and</strong> toknock the wheel out <strong>of</strong> the front fork.20


6.1.3.b. Installing a Quick Release Front Wheel(1) Rotate the quick-release lever so that it curves away from thewheel (Fig. 11 & 13). This is the OPEN position.(2) With the steering fork facing forward, insert the wheel betweenthe fork blades so that the axle sits firmly at the top <strong>of</strong> the slots thatare at the tips <strong>of</strong> the fork blades - the fork dropouts. The quickrelease lever should be on the left side <strong>of</strong> the <strong>bicycle</strong> (Fig. 12 & 13).If <strong>your</strong> bike has a clip-on type secondary retention device, engage it.(3) Holding the quick-release lever in the OPEN position with <strong>your</strong>right h<strong>and</strong>, tighten the tension adjusting nut with <strong>your</strong> left h<strong>and</strong> until itis finger tight against the fork dropout (Fig. 11).(4) While pushing the wheel firmly to the top <strong>of</strong> the slots in the forkdropouts, <strong>and</strong> at the same time centering the wheel rim in the fork,rotate the quick-release lever upwards <strong>and</strong> push it into the CLOSEDposition (Fig. 11 & 12). The lever should be parallel to the fork blade<strong>and</strong> curved towards the wheel.CAUTION: If you can fully close the quick release without wrapping<strong>your</strong> fingers around the fork blade for leverage, <strong>and</strong> the lever doesnot leave a clear imprint in the palm <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> h<strong>and</strong>, the tension isinsufficient. Open the lever; turn the tension adjusting nut clockwise aquarter turn; then try again.(5) If the lever cannot be pushed all the way to a position parallel tothe fork blade, return the lever to the OPEN position. Then turn thetension adjusting nut counterclockwise one-quarter turn <strong>and</strong> trytightening the lever again.(6) Close the brake shoes; then spin the wheel to make sure that it iscentered in the frame <strong>and</strong> clears the brake shoes.WARNING: Secondary retention devices are not a substitute forcorrect quick release adjustment. Failure to properly adjust the quickrelease mechanism can cause the wheel to wobble or disengage,which could cause you to lose control <strong>and</strong> fall, resulting in seriousinjury or death.6.1.3.c. Removing a Quick Release Rear Wheel(1) Open up the brake shoes (see Section 6.3.1, Figs. 16a, b, c <strong>and</strong>d).(2) Shift the rear derailleur to a high gear (the smallest, outermostrear sprocket) <strong>and</strong> pull the derailleur body back with <strong>your</strong> right h<strong>and</strong>.(3) Rotate the quick-release lever to the OPEN position (Fig. 11 &13).(4) Lift the rear wheel <strong>of</strong>f the ground a few inches <strong>and</strong>, with thederailleur still pulled back, push the wheel forward <strong>and</strong> down until itcomes out <strong>of</strong> the rear dropouts.6.1.3.d. Installing a Quick Release Rear Wheel(1) Shift the rear derailleur to its outermost position.(2) Pull the derailleur body back with<strong>your</strong> right h<strong>and</strong>.(3) Rotate the quick-release lever tothe OPEN position. The lever shouldbe on the side <strong>of</strong> the wheel oppositethe derailleur <strong>and</strong> freewheelsprockets.21


(4) Put the chain on top <strong>of</strong> the smallest freewheel sprocket. Then,insert the wheel into the frame dropouts <strong>and</strong> pull it all the way in tothe dropouts (Fig. 14).(5) Tighten the adjusting nut until it is tight against the frame dropout;then rotate the lever toward the front <strong>of</strong> the bike until it is parallel tothe frame's chainstay or seatstay tube <strong>and</strong> is curved toward thewheel (Fig. 14).CAUTION: If you can fully close the quick release without wrapping<strong>your</strong> fingers around the chainstay/seatstay tube for leverage, <strong>and</strong> thelever does not leave a clear imprint in the palm <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> h<strong>and</strong>, thetension is insufficient. Open the lever, turn the tension adjusting nutclockwise a quarter turn, <strong>and</strong> then try again.(6) If the lever cannot be pushed all the way to a position parallel tothe chainstay or seatstay tube, return the lever to the OPEN position.Then turn the adjusting nut counterclockwise one-quarter turn <strong>and</strong> trytightening again.(7) Push the rear derailleur back into position.(8) Close the brake shoes; then spin the wheel to make sure that it iscentered in the frame <strong>and</strong> clears the brake shoes.6.1.4. Removing <strong>and</strong> Installing Bolt-On Wheels6.1.4.a. Removing a Bolt-On Front Wheel(1) Open up the brake(2) With a 15mm box wrench or a six-inch adjustable wrench, loosenthe two axle nuts.(3) If <strong>your</strong> front fork has a clip-ontype secondary retention device,disengage it <strong>and</strong> go to step (4). If<strong>your</strong> front fork has an integralsecondary retention device, loosenthe axle nuts about six full turns;then go to step (4).(4)Raise the front wheel a few inches <strong>of</strong>f the ground <strong>and</strong> tap the top<strong>of</strong> the wheel with the palm <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> h<strong>and</strong> to knock the wheel out <strong>of</strong> thefork ends.6.1.4.b. Installing a Bolt-On Front Wheel(1) With the steering fork facing forward, insert the wheel betweenthe fork blades so that the axle seats firmly at the top <strong>of</strong> the slots thatare at the tips <strong>of</strong> the fork blades. The axle nut washers should be onthe outside, between the fork blade <strong>and</strong> the axle nut. If <strong>your</strong> bike hasa clip-on type secondary retention device, engage it.22


(2) While pushing the wheel firmly to the top <strong>of</strong> the slots in the forkdropouts, <strong>and</strong> at the same time centering the wheel rim in the fork,use a six-inch adjustable wrench or a 15mm box wrench to tightenthe axle nuts as tight as you can.(3) Close the brake shoes; then spin the wheel to make sure that it iscentered in the frame <strong>and</strong> clears the brake shoes.6.1.4.c. Removing a Bolt-On Rear Wheel(1) Open the rear brake shoes (seeSection 6.3.1, Figs. 16a, b, c <strong>and</strong> d).axle nut washers should be on the outside, between the frame <strong>and</strong>the axle nut.(3) Tighten the axle nut as tightly as you can, using a six-inchadjustable wrench or a 15mm box wrench.(4) Push the rear derailleur back into position.(5) Close the brake; then spin the wheel to make sure that it iscentered in the frame <strong>and</strong> clears the brake shoes.(2) Shift the rear derailleur to high gear(the smallest rear sprocket) <strong>and</strong> pull thederailleur body back with <strong>your</strong> righth<strong>and</strong>.(3) With a 15mm box wrench or a six-inch adjustable wrench, loosenthe two axle nuts.(4) Lift the rear wheel <strong>of</strong>f the ground a few inches <strong>and</strong>, with thederailleur still pulled back, push the wheel forward <strong>and</strong> down until itcomes out <strong>of</strong> the rear dropouts.6.1.4.d. Installing a Bolt-On Rear Wheel(1) Shift the rear derailleur to its outermost position <strong>and</strong> pull thederailleur body back with <strong>your</strong> right h<strong>and</strong>.(2) Put the chain on to the smallest sprocket. Then, insert the wheelinto the frame dropouts <strong>and</strong> pull it all the way in to the dropouts. The23


6.2. Seatpost Quick ReleaseMany mountain bikes are equipped with quick-release seat postbinders. The seatpost quick-release binder works similar to the wheelquick-release (Section 6.1.1) While a quick release looks like a longbolt with a lever on one end <strong>and</strong> a nut on the other, the quick releaseuses a cam action to firmly clamp the seat post.WARNING: Riding with an improperly tightened seat post can allowthe saddle to turn or move <strong>and</strong> cause you to lose control <strong>and</strong> fall.Therefore:1) Ask <strong>your</strong> dealer to help you make sure you know how to correctlyclamp <strong>your</strong> seat post.2) Underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> apply the correct technique for clamping <strong>your</strong>seat post quick release.3) Before you ride the bike, first check that the seatpost is securelyclamped.6.2.1. Adjusting the quick release mechanismThe action <strong>of</strong> the quick release cam squeezes the seat collar aroundthe seat post to hold the seat post securely in place. The amount <strong>of</strong>clamping force is controlled by the tension adjusting nut. Turning thetension adjusting nut clockwise while keeping the cam lever fromrotating increases clamping force; turning it counterclockwise whilekeeping the cam lever from rotating reduces clamping force. Lessthan half a turn <strong>of</strong> the tension adjusting nut can make the differencebetween safe clamping force <strong>and</strong> unsafe clamping force.CAUTION: The full force <strong>of</strong> the cam action is needed to clamp theseatpost securely. Holding the nut with one h<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> turning thelever like a wing nut with the other h<strong>and</strong> until everything is as tight asyou can get it will not clamp the seatpost safely.CAUTION: If you can fully close the quick release without wrapping<strong>your</strong> fingers around a frame tube for leverage, <strong>and</strong> the lever does notleave a clear imprint in the palm <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> h<strong>and</strong>, the tension isinsufficient. Open the lever, turn the tension adjusting nut clockwise aquarter turn, <strong>and</strong> then try again.6.3. BrakesNOTE: For most effective braking, use both brakes <strong>and</strong> apply themsimultaneously.WARNING: Sudden or excessive application <strong>of</strong> the front brake maypitch the rider over the h<strong>and</strong>lebars, causing serious injury or death.6.3.1. How brakes workIt’s important to <strong>your</strong> safety that you instinctively know which brakelever controls which brake on <strong>your</strong> bike. In the U.S., bikes arerequired to be set up with the right brake lever controlling the rearbrake, <strong>and</strong> the left lever controlling the front brake.The braking action <strong>of</strong> a <strong>bicycle</strong> is a function <strong>of</strong> the friction betweenthe brake surfaces (usually the brake shoes) <strong>and</strong> the wheel rim orwheel disc rotor. To make sure that you have maximum frictionavailable, keep <strong>your</strong> wheel rims or rotors <strong>and</strong> brake shoes clean <strong>and</strong>free <strong>of</strong> lubricants, waxes or polishes.24


Make sure that <strong>your</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s can reach <strong>and</strong>squeeze the brake levers comfortably. If<strong>your</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s are too small to operate thelevers comfortably, consult <strong>your</strong> dealerbefore riding the bike. The lever reachmay be adjustable, or you may need adifferent brake lever design.Most brakes have some form <strong>of</strong> quickrelease mechanism to allow the brakeshoes to clear the tire when a wheel isremoved or reinstalled. When the brakequick release is in the open position, thebrakes are inoperative. Ask <strong>your</strong> dealer tomake sure that you underst<strong>and</strong> the waythe brake quick release works on <strong>your</strong> bike(see Fig. 16A, B,C &D) <strong>and</strong> check eachtime to make sure both brakes workcorrectly before you get on the bike.Brakes are designed to control <strong>your</strong>speed, not just to stop the bike. Maximumbraking force for each wheel occurs at thepoint just before the wheel "locks up"(stops rotating) <strong>and</strong> starts to skid. Oncethe tire skids, you actually lose most <strong>of</strong><strong>your</strong> stopping force <strong>and</strong> all directionalcontrol. You need to practice slowing <strong>and</strong>stopping smoothly without locking a wheel.The technique is called progressive brakemodulation. Instead <strong>of</strong> jerking the brakelever to the position where you think you'llgenerate appropriate braking force,squeeze the lever, progressivelyincreasing the braking force. If you feel the wheel begin to lock up,release pressure just a little to keep the wheel rotating just short <strong>of</strong>lockup. It's important to develop a feel for the amount <strong>of</strong> brake leverpressure required for each wheel <strong>of</strong> different speeds <strong>and</strong> on differentsurfaces, to better underst<strong>and</strong> this, experiment a little by walking<strong>your</strong> bike <strong>and</strong> applying different amounts <strong>of</strong> pressure to each brakelever, until the wheel locks.WARNING: Some <strong>bicycle</strong> brakes, such as linear-pull <strong>and</strong> discbrakes, are extremely powerful. You should take extra care inbecoming familiar with these brakes <strong>and</strong> exercise particular carewhen using them. Applying these brakes too hard or too suddenlycan lock up a wheel, which could cause you to lose control <strong>and</strong> fall.When you apply one or both brakes, the bike begins to slow, but <strong>your</strong>body wants to continue at the speed at which if was going. Thiscauses a transfer <strong>of</strong> weight to the front wheel (or, under heavybraking, around the front wheel hub, which could send you flyingover the h<strong>and</strong>lebars). A wheel with more weight on it will acceptgreater brake pressure before lockup; a wheel with less weight willlock up with less brake pressure. So, as you apply brakes <strong>and</strong> <strong>your</strong>weight shifts forward, you need to transfer <strong>your</strong> body toward the rear<strong>of</strong> the bike, to transfer weight back on to the rear wheel; <strong>and</strong> at thesame time, you need to both decrease rear braking <strong>and</strong> increasefront braking force. This is even more important on steep descents,because descents shift weight forward.The keys to effective speed control <strong>and</strong> safe stopping are controllingwheel lockup <strong>and</strong> weight transfer. Practice braking <strong>and</strong> weighttransfer techniques where there is no traffic or other hazards <strong>and</strong>distractions.25


Everything changes when you ride on loose surfaces or in wetweather. Tire adhesion is reduced, so the wheels have lesscornering <strong>and</strong> braking traction <strong>and</strong> can lock up with less brake force.Moisture or dirt on the brake shoes reduces their ability to grip. Theway to maintain control on loose or wet surfaces is to go more slowlyto begin with.6.3.2. Adjusting <strong>your</strong> brakesIf either brake lever on <strong>your</strong> bike failsthe Mechanical Safety Check(Section 4.3) you may be able torestore brake lever travel by turningthe brake cable adjusting barrel (Fig.17A & B) counterclockwise, then lockthe adjustment in by turning thebarrel's lock nut clockwise as far as itwill go. If the lever still fails theMechanical Safely Check, have <strong>your</strong>dealer check the brakes.6.4. ShiftingYour multi-speed <strong>bicycle</strong> will have aderailleur drivetrain (see 2. below),an internal gear hub drivetrain (see3. below) or, in some special cases,a combination <strong>of</strong> the two.6.4.1. Why all those gears?You will get the greatest fitness benefit, produce the greatestsustained power <strong>and</strong> have the greatest endurance if you learn to spinthe pedals at high revolutions per minute (called cadence) againstlow resistance. You will get the least fitness benefit <strong>and</strong> have theleast endurance by pushing hard on the pedals against heavyresistance. The purpose <strong>of</strong> having multiple gears on a <strong>bicycle</strong> is to letyou chose the gear that allows you to maintain <strong>your</strong> optimumcadence under the widest range <strong>of</strong> riding conditions. Depending on<strong>your</strong> fitness level <strong>and</strong> experience (the fitter you are, the higher thecadence), optimum cadence is between 60 <strong>and</strong> 90 pedal revolutionsper minute.6.4.2. Shifting aderailleur drivetrainIf <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> has a derailleurdrivetrain, the gear-changingmechanism will consist <strong>of</strong>:• a rear sprocket clustercalled a free-wheel orfreewheel cassette• a rear derailleur• usually a front derailleur• one or two shifters• one or two control cables• one, two or three frontsprockets called chainrings• a drive chainThe number <strong>of</strong> possible gearcombinations ("speeds") is theproduct <strong>of</strong> multiplying thenumber <strong>of</strong> sprockets at the rear <strong>of</strong> the drivetrain by the number <strong>of</strong>sprockets at the front (6x2 =12,6x3= 18, 7x3 =21 <strong>and</strong> so on).26


6.4.3. Shifting GearsThere are many different types <strong>of</strong> shifter mechanisms, each preferred forspecific types <strong>of</strong> application because <strong>of</strong> its ergonomic, performance <strong>and</strong>price characteristics. The designers <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> bike have selected the shifterdesign that they believe will give the best results on <strong>your</strong> bike. Thedifferent types <strong>of</strong> shifters <strong>and</strong> their operation are illustrated in Figures 18Athrough 18H. Identify the shifters on <strong>your</strong> bike before reading on.The vocabulary <strong>of</strong> shifting can bepretty confusing. A downshift is ashift to a "slower" gear, one that iseasier to pedal. An upshift is ashift to a "faster", harder to pedalgear. What's confusing is thatwhat's happening at the frontderailleur is the opposite <strong>of</strong> what'shappening at the rear derailleur(for details, read the instructionson Shifting the Rear Derailleur <strong>and</strong>Shifting the Front Derailleurbelow). For example, you canselect a gear which will makepedaling easier on a hill (make adownshift) in one <strong>of</strong> two ways: shiftthe chain down the gear “steps” toa lower gear at the front, or up thegear “steps” to a higher gear at therear. So, at the rear gear cluster,what is called a downshift lookslike an upshift. The way to keepthings straight is to remember thatshifting the chain in towards thecenterline <strong>of</strong> the bike is foraccelerating <strong>and</strong> climbing, <strong>and</strong> is called a downshift. Moving thechain out or away from the centerline <strong>of</strong> the bike is for speed, <strong>and</strong> iscalled an upshift.Whether upshifting or downshifting, the <strong>bicycle</strong> derailleur systemdesign requires that the drive chain be moving forward <strong>and</strong> be underat least some tension. A derailleur will shift only if you are pedalingforward.CAUTION: Never move the shifterwhile pedaling backward, nor pedalbackwards after having moved theshifter. This could jam the chain <strong>and</strong>cause serious damage to the<strong>bicycle</strong>.WARNING: Never shift amisadjusted derailleur onto thelargest or the smallest sprocket. Thechain could jam, causing you to losecontrol <strong>and</strong> fall.6.4.3.a. Shifting the Rear DerailleurThe rear derailleur is controlled by the right shifter. The function <strong>of</strong>the rear derailleur is to move the drive chain from one gear toanother on the rear gear cluster, thereby changing gear drive ratios.The smaller sprockets on the gear cluster produce higher gear ratios.Pedaling in the higher gears requires greater pedaling effort, buttakes you a greater distance with each revolution <strong>of</strong> the pedalcranks. The larger sprockets produce lower gear ratios.27


Using them requires less pedaling effort, but takes you a shorterdistance with each pedal crank revolution. Moving the chain from asmaller sprocket <strong>of</strong> the gear cluster to a larger sprocket results in adownshift. Moving the chain from a larger sprocket to a smallersprocket results in an upshift. In order for the derailleur to disengagethe chain from one sprocket <strong>and</strong> move it on to another, the chainmust be moving forward (i.e. the rider must be pedaling forward).6.4.3.b. Shifting the Front DerailleurThe front derailleur, which iscontrolled by the left shifter, shifts thechain between the larger <strong>and</strong> smallerchainrings. Shifting the chain onto asmaller chainrings makes pedalingeasier (a downshift). Shifting to alarger chainring makes pedalingharder (an upshift).Which gear should I bein?The combination <strong>of</strong> largest rear,smallest front gears (Fig. 19) is forthe steepest hills. The smallest rear,largest front combination (Fig. 19) isfor the greatest speed. It is notnecessary to shift gears in sequence.Instead, find the "starting gear" whichis right for <strong>your</strong> level <strong>of</strong> ability – agear which is hard enough for quick acceleration but easy enough tolet you start from a stop without wobbling - <strong>and</strong> experiment withupshifting <strong>and</strong> downshifting to get a feel for the different gearcombinations. At first, practice shifting where there are no obstacles,hazards or other traffic, until you've built up <strong>your</strong> confidence. Onceyou've learned the basics, experience will teach you which gear isappropriate for which condition, <strong>and</strong> practice will help you shiftsmoothly <strong>and</strong> at precisely the optimum moment.6.4.3.c. Shifting an internal gear hub drivetrainIf <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> has an internal gear hub drivetrain, the gear changingmechanism will consist <strong>of</strong>:• a 3, 5, 7 or possibly 12 speed internal gear hub• one, or sometimes two, shifters• one or two control cables• one front sprocket called a chainring• a drive trainShifting internal gear hub gearsShifting with an internal gear hub drivetrain is simply a matter <strong>of</strong>moving the shifter to the indicated position for the desired gear.After you have moved the shifter to the gear position <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> choice,ease the pressure on the pedals for an instant to allow the hub tocomplete the shift.28


What gear should I be in?The numerically lowest gear (1) is for the steepest hills. Thenumerically largest gear 3, 5, 7 or 12 (depending on the number <strong>of</strong>speeds <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> hub) is for the greatest speed.Shifting from an easier, "slower" gear (like 1) to a harder, "faster"gear (like 2 or 3) is called an upshift. Shifting from a harder, "faster"gear to an easier, “slower” gear is called a downshift. It is notnecessary to shift gears in sequence. Instead, find the "starting gear"for the conditions a gear which is hard enough for quick accelerationbut easy enough to let you start from a stop without wobbling <strong>and</strong>experiment with upshifting <strong>and</strong> downshifting to get a feel for thedifferent gears. At first, practice shifting where there are noobstacles, hazards or other traffic until you've built up <strong>your</strong>confidence. Once you've learned the basics, experience will teachyou which gear is appropriate for which condition, <strong>and</strong> practice willhelp you shift smoothly <strong>and</strong> at precisely the optimum moment.6.5.Toeclips & StrapsToeclips <strong>and</strong> straps are the traditional means that experiencedcyclists use to keep their feet correctly positioned <strong>and</strong> engaged withthe pedals. The toeclip positions the ball <strong>of</strong> the foot over the pedalspindle, which gives maximum pedaling power. The toe strap, whentightened, keeps the foot engaged throughout the rotation cycle <strong>of</strong>the pedal. While toeclips <strong>and</strong> straps give some benefit with any kind<strong>of</strong> shoe, they work most effectively with cycling shoes designed foruse with toeclips. Your dealer can explain how toeclips <strong>and</strong> strapswork.WARNING: Getting into <strong>and</strong> out <strong>of</strong> pedals with toeclips <strong>and</strong> strapsrequires skill which can only be acquired with practice. Until itbecomes a reflex action, the technique requires concentration thatcan distract the rider's attention, causing you to lose control <strong>and</strong> fall.Practice the use <strong>of</strong> toeclips <strong>and</strong> straps where there are no obstacles,hazards or traffic. Keep the straps loose, <strong>and</strong> don't tighten them until<strong>your</strong> technique <strong>and</strong> confidence in getting in <strong>and</strong> out <strong>of</strong> the pedalswarrants it. Never ride in traffic with <strong>your</strong> toe straps tight.6.6. Clipless ("step-in") pedalsClipless pedals (sometimes called "step-in pedals") are the meansmost racers use to keep their feet securely in the correct position formaximum pedaling efficiency. They work like ski bindings: a plate onthe sole <strong>of</strong> the shoe clicks into a spring-loaded fixture on the pedal.Clipless pedals require shoes specifically designed for the make <strong>and</strong>model <strong>of</strong> pedal being used.Many clipless pedals are designed to allow the rider to adjust theamount <strong>of</strong> force needed to engage or disengage the foot. Yourdealer can show you how to make this adjustment.WARNING: Clipless pedals are intended for use with shoesspecifically made to fit them <strong>and</strong> are designed to firmly keep the footengaged with the pedal. Practice is required to learn to engage <strong>and</strong>disengage the foot safely. Until engaging <strong>and</strong> disengaging the footbecomes a reflex action, the technique requires concentration thatcan distract the rider's attention, causing the rider to lose control <strong>and</strong>fall. Practice engaging <strong>and</strong> disengaging clipless pedals in a placewhere there are no obstacles, hazards or traffic; <strong>and</strong> be sure that youfollow the setup <strong>and</strong> service instructions <strong>and</strong> warnings that came with<strong>your</strong> pedals.29


6.7. Tires <strong>and</strong> Tubes6.7.1.TiresBicycle tires are available in manydesigns <strong>and</strong> specifications, ranging fromgeneral purpose designs to tiresdesigned to perform best under veryspecific weather or terrain conditions.Your <strong>bicycle</strong> has been equipped withtires that the bike's manufacturerbelieved were the best balance <strong>of</strong>performance <strong>and</strong> value for the use forwhich the bike was intended. If, onceyou've gained experience with <strong>your</strong> newbike, you feel that a different tire might better suit <strong>your</strong> riding needs,<strong>your</strong> dealer can help you select the most appropriate design. Thesize, pressure rating, <strong>and</strong> on some high-performance tires thespecific recommended use, are marked on the sidewall <strong>of</strong> the tire(see Fig. 20). The part <strong>of</strong> this information that is most important toyou is Tire Pressure.WARNING: Never inflate a tire beyond the maximum pressuremarked on the tire’s sidewall. Exceeding the recommendedmaximum pressure may blow the tire <strong>of</strong>f the rim, which could causedamage to the bike <strong>and</strong> injury to the rider <strong>and</strong> byst<strong>and</strong>ers.The best way to inflate a <strong>bicycle</strong> tire to the correct pressure is with a<strong>bicycle</strong> pump. Your dealer can help you select an appropriate pump.CAUTION: Gas station air hoses move a large volume <strong>of</strong> air veryrapidly, <strong>and</strong> will raise the pressure in <strong>your</strong> tire very rapidly. To avoidoverinflation when using a gas station air hose, put air into <strong>your</strong> tirein short, spaced bursts.Tire pressure is given either as maximum pressure or as a pressurerange. How a tire performs under different terrain or weatherconditions depends largely on tire pressure.Inflating the tire to near its maximum recommended pressure givesthe lowest rolling resistance; but also produces the harshest ride.High pressures work best on smooth, dry pavement.Very low pressures, at the bottom <strong>of</strong> the recommended pressurerange, give the best performance on smooth, slick terrain such ashard-packed clay, <strong>and</strong> on deep, loose surfaces such as deep, drys<strong>and</strong>.Tire pressure that is too low for <strong>your</strong> weight <strong>and</strong> the riding conditionscan cause a puncture <strong>of</strong> the tube by allowing the tire to deformsufficiently to pinch the inner tube between the rim <strong>and</strong> the ridingsurface.CAUTION: Pencil type automotive tire gauges <strong>and</strong> gas station airhose pressure settings are generally inaccurate <strong>and</strong> should not bedepended on for consistent, accurate pressure. Instead, use a goodquality dial gauge.Ask <strong>your</strong> dealer to recommend the best tire pressure for the kind <strong>of</strong>riding you will most <strong>of</strong>ten do, <strong>and</strong> have the dealer inflate <strong>your</strong> tires tothat pressure. Then, check inflation as described in Section 4.3 soyou'll know how correctly inflated tires should look <strong>and</strong> feel. Sometires may need to be brought up to pressure every week or two.Some special high-performance tires have unidirectional treads: theirtread pattern is designed to work better in one direction than in the30


other. The sidewall marking <strong>of</strong> a unidirectional tire will have an arrowshowing the correct rotation direction. If <strong>your</strong> bike has unidirectionaltires, be sure that they are mounted to rotate in the correct direction.6.7.2.Tire ValvesThe tire valve allows air to enter the tire’s inner tube under pressure,but doesn't let it back out unless you want it to.There are primarily two kinds <strong>of</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> tube valves (actually, thereare other designs, but they are seldom seen in the US any more):The Schraeder Valve <strong>and</strong> the Presta Valve. The <strong>bicycle</strong> pump youuse must have the fitting appropriate to the valve stems on <strong>your</strong><strong>bicycle</strong>.6.7.2.a. The SchraederValve(Fig. 21a) is like the valve on a car tire.To inflate a Schraeder valve tube,remove the valve cap <strong>and</strong> push the airhose or pump fitting onto the end <strong>of</strong> thevalve stem. To let air out <strong>of</strong> aSchraeder valve, depress the pin in theend <strong>of</strong> the valve stem with the end <strong>of</strong> akey or other appropriate object.6.7.2.b. The Presta valve(Fig. 21b) has a narrower diameter <strong>and</strong>is only found on <strong>bicycle</strong> tires. To inflatea Presta valve tube using a Prestaheaded <strong>bicycle</strong> pump, remove the valve cap; unscrew(counterclockwise) the valve stem lock nut; <strong>and</strong> push down on thevalve stem to free the valve. Then push the pump head on to thevalve <strong>and</strong> inflate. To inflate a Presta valve with a gas station air hose,you'll need a Presta adapter (available at <strong>your</strong> bike shop) whichscrews onto the valve stem once you've freed up the valve. Theadapter fits the end <strong>of</strong> the air hose fitting. To let air out <strong>of</strong> a Prestavalve, open up the valve stem lock nut <strong>and</strong> depress the valve stem.6.7.2.c. Gluing Tubular Tires.Tubular Tires are intended for racing only <strong>and</strong> must be installed byan experienced mechanic. Please consult <strong>your</strong> Bicycle Dealer forinstallation <strong>of</strong> tubular tires or instruction in how to do this.6.7.3. Bicycle SuspensionSome Mountain Bikes come equipped with suspension systems thatare designed to smooth out some <strong>of</strong> the shocks encountered in <strong>of</strong>froadriding. There are many different types <strong>of</strong> suspension systems -too many to deal with individually in this Manual. If <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> has asuspension system <strong>of</strong> any kind, ask <strong>your</strong> dealer to provide you withthe appropriate manufacturers’ adjustment <strong>and</strong> <strong>maintenance</strong>instructions.WARNING: Failure to check <strong>and</strong> properly adjust the suspensionsystem may result in suspension malfunction, which may cause youto lose control <strong>and</strong> fall.CAUTION: Changing suspension adjustment can change theh<strong>and</strong>ling <strong>and</strong> braking characteristics <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>. ecommendations, <strong>and</strong> always check for changes in the h<strong>and</strong>ling <strong>and</strong>braking characteristics <strong>of</strong> the <strong>bicycle</strong> after a suspension adjustmentby taking a careful test ride in a hazard-free area.CAUTION: Not all <strong>bicycle</strong>s can be safely retr<strong>of</strong>itted with some types<strong>of</strong> suspension systems. Before retr<strong>of</strong>itting a <strong>bicycle</strong> with anysuspension, check with the <strong>bicycle</strong>'s manufacturer to make sure thatwhat you want to do is compatible with the <strong>bicycle</strong>'s design.WARNING: If <strong>your</strong> bike has suspension, the increased speed youmay develop also increases <strong>your</strong> risk. When braking, the front <strong>of</strong> asuspended bike dips. You could lose control <strong>and</strong> fall if <strong>your</strong> skill is notup to h<strong>and</strong>ling this system. Get to know how to h<strong>and</strong>le <strong>your</strong>suspension system safely before trying any downhill or very fastmountain biking.Suspension can increase the h<strong>and</strong>ling capabilities <strong>and</strong> comfort <strong>of</strong><strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>. This enhanced capability may allow you to ride faster;but you must not confuse the enhanced capabilities <strong>of</strong> the <strong>bicycle</strong>with <strong>your</strong> own capabilities as a rider. Increasing <strong>your</strong> skill will taketime <strong>and</strong> practice. Proceed carefully until you are sure you arecompetent to h<strong>and</strong>le the full capabilities <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> bike.6.7.4. AccessoriesTo install the 4ZA Wing <strong>and</strong> Tail bottle cages, use the bottle cagemounting bolts installed on the down tube <strong>and</strong> seat tube <strong>of</strong> the frame.Tighten each bolt to maximum 4Nm.Some cylco cross bikes may not come with bottle cage mounts <strong>and</strong>may not be compatible with water bottle cages.7. SERVICE AND MAINTENANCENOTE: Technological advances have made <strong>bicycle</strong>s <strong>and</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>components more complex than ever before, <strong>and</strong> the pace <strong>of</strong>innovation is increasing. This on-going evolution makes it impossiblefor this manual to provide all the information required to properlyrepair <strong>and</strong>/or maintain <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>. In order to help minimize thechances <strong>of</strong> an accident <strong>and</strong> possible injury, it is critical that you haveany repair or <strong>maintenance</strong> that is not specifically described in thismanual performed by <strong>your</strong> dealer.Equally important is that <strong>your</strong> individual <strong>maintenance</strong> requirementswill be determined by everything from <strong>your</strong> riding style to geographiclocation. Consult <strong>your</strong> dealer for help in determining <strong>your</strong><strong>maintenance</strong> requirements.How much <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> bike's service <strong>and</strong> <strong>maintenance</strong> you can do<strong>your</strong>self depends on <strong>your</strong> level <strong>of</strong> skill <strong>and</strong> experience, <strong>and</strong> onwhether you have the special tools required.WARNING: Many <strong>bicycle</strong> service <strong>and</strong> repair tasks require specialknowledge <strong>and</strong> tools. Do not begin any adjustments or service on<strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> if you have the slightest doubt about <strong>your</strong> ability toproperly complete them. Improper adjustment or service may resultin damage to the <strong>bicycle</strong> or in an accident that can cause seriousinjury or death.If you want to learn to do major service <strong>and</strong> repair work on <strong>your</strong> bike,you have three options:32


1. Ask <strong>your</strong> dealer whether copies <strong>of</strong> the manufacturer's installation<strong>and</strong> service instructions for the components on <strong>your</strong> bike areavailable.2. Ask <strong>your</strong> dealer to recommend a book on <strong>bicycle</strong> repair.3. Ask <strong>your</strong> dealer about the availability <strong>of</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> repair courses in<strong>your</strong> area.Regardless <strong>of</strong> which option you select, we recommend that you ask<strong>your</strong> dealer to check the quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> work the first time you workon something <strong>and</strong> before you ride the bike, just to make sure thatyou have done everything correctly. Since this will require the time <strong>of</strong>a mechanic, there may be a modest charge for this service.7.1. Service & Maintenance ScheduleSome service <strong>and</strong> <strong>maintenance</strong> can <strong>and</strong> should be performed by theowner, <strong>and</strong> require no special tools or knowledge beyond what ispresented in this manual.The following are examples <strong>of</strong> the type <strong>of</strong> service you should perform<strong>your</strong>self. All other service, <strong>maintenance</strong> <strong>and</strong> repair should beperformed in a properly equipped facility by a qualified <strong>bicycle</strong>mechanic using the correct tools <strong>and</strong> procedures specified by themanufacturer.7.1.1. Break-in Period:Your bike will last longer <strong>and</strong> work better if you break it in beforeriding it hard. Control cables <strong>and</strong> wheel spokes may stretch or seatwhen a new bike is first used <strong>and</strong> may require readjustment by <strong>your</strong>dealer. Your Mechanical Safety Check (Section 4.3) will help youidentify some things that need readjustment.But even if everything seems fine to you, it’s best to take <strong>your</strong> bikeback to the dealer for a checkup. Dealers typically suggest you bringthe bike in for a 30-day checkup. Another way to judge when it's timefor the first checkup is to bring the bike in after three to five hours <strong>of</strong>hard <strong>of</strong>f-road use, or about 10 to 15 hours <strong>of</strong> on-road or more casual<strong>of</strong>f-road use. But if you think something is wrong with the bike, take itto <strong>your</strong> dealer before riding it again.7.1.2. Mechanical Safety Check before everyride:(see Section 4.3)7.1.2.a. After every long or hard ride; if the bike hasbeen exposed to water or grit; or at least every 100miles:Clean the bike <strong>and</strong> lightly oil the chain, freewheel cogs <strong>and</strong> rearderailleur pulley bushings. Wipe <strong>of</strong>f excess oil. Lubrication is afunction <strong>of</strong> climate. Talk to <strong>your</strong> dealer about the best lubricants <strong>and</strong>the recommended lubrication frequency for <strong>your</strong> area.33


7.1.2.b. After every long or hard ride or after 10 to20 hours <strong>of</strong> riding:• Squeeze the front brake <strong>and</strong> rock the bike forward <strong>and</strong> back.Everything feel solid? If you feel a clunk with each forward orbackward movement <strong>of</strong> the bike, you probably have a loose headset.Have <strong>your</strong> dealer check it.• Lift the front wheel <strong>of</strong>f the ground <strong>and</strong> swing it from side to side.Feel smooth? If you feel any binding or roughness in the steering,you may have a tight headset. Have <strong>your</strong> dealer check it.• Grab one pedal <strong>and</strong> rock it toward <strong>and</strong> away from the centerline <strong>of</strong>the bike; then do the same with the other pedal. Anything feel loose?If so, have <strong>your</strong> dealer check it.• Take a look at the brake shoes. Starting to look worn or not hittingthe wheel rim squarely? Time to have the dealer adjust or replacethem.• Check the control cables <strong>and</strong> cable housings. Any rust? Kinks?Fraying? If so, have <strong>your</strong> dealer replace them.• Inspect the tire tread <strong>and</strong> sidewalls. Any damage? Cuts?Embedded particles? If so, have <strong>your</strong> dealer replace them.• Check wheel rim <strong>and</strong> braking surfaces for wear or damage. Wearindicator gone? Any dents? If so, have <strong>your</strong> dealer replace them.• Squeeze each adjoining pair <strong>of</strong> spokes on either side <strong>of</strong> each wheelbetween <strong>your</strong> thumb <strong>and</strong> index finger. Do they all feel about thesame? If any feel loose, have <strong>your</strong> dealer check the wheel fortension <strong>and</strong> trueness.• Check the frame, particularly in the area around all tube joints, theh<strong>and</strong>lebars, the stem <strong>and</strong> the seatpost for any deep scratches,cracks or discoloration. These are signs <strong>of</strong> stress-caused fatigue <strong>and</strong>indicate that a part is at the end <strong>of</strong> its useful life <strong>and</strong> needs to bereplaced.• Check to make sure that all parts <strong>and</strong> accessories are still secure,<strong>and</strong> tighten any that are not.WARNING: Like any mechanical device, a <strong>bicycle</strong> <strong>and</strong> itscomponents are subject to wear <strong>and</strong> stress. Different materials <strong>and</strong>mechanisms wear or fatigue from stress at different rates <strong>and</strong> havedifferent life cycles. If a component's life cycle is exceeded, thecomponent can suddenly <strong>and</strong> catastrophically fail, causing seriousinjury or death to the rider. Scratches, cracks <strong>and</strong> discoloration aresigns <strong>of</strong> stress-caused fatigue <strong>and</strong> indicate that a part is at the end <strong>of</strong>its useful life <strong>and</strong> needs to be replaced.7.1.3. As required:If either brake lever fails the Mechanical Safety Check (Section 4.3):restore brake lever travel on cable-actuated braking systems byturning the brake cable adjusting barrel counterclockwise, then lockthe adjustment in by turning the barrel's lock nut clockwise as far as itwill go. If the lever still fails the Mechanical Safety Check, have <strong>your</strong>dealer check the brakes.34


If the chain won't shift smoothly <strong>and</strong> quietly from gear to gear: thederailleur is out <strong>of</strong> adjustment. The cause may be as simple as cablestretch, in which case you can compensate by turning the shifter orderailleur cable adjusting barrel counterclockwise half turn. Tryshifting again. If half turn to a full turn <strong>of</strong> the cable adjusting barreldoes not cure the problem, see <strong>your</strong> dealer.Proper lubrication <strong>and</strong> grease on <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> <strong>and</strong> components willensure better functioning <strong>and</strong> increase the longevity <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>.Your Authorized Dealer can provide you with the appropriatelubricants <strong>and</strong> greases needed to perform this. Periodically lubricate<strong>and</strong> grease:• Chain• Derailleur <strong>and</strong> Brake Cables• Derailleur Pivot Points• Brake <strong>and</strong> Brake Lever Pivot Points• All Bolts (mounting bolts such as <strong>your</strong> stem, seatpost, etc),Bearings (headset, bottom bracket, wheel hub bearings), <strong>and</strong>Frame Pivot Points (for full suspension mountain <strong>bicycle</strong>s)Re-greasing bearings requires special tools <strong>and</strong> training, <strong>and</strong> shouldonly be done by <strong>your</strong> Authorized Dealer.7.1.4. 7.1.5. Installing extra parts:The following parts are not assembled to the frame when the <strong>bicycle</strong>is boxed <strong>and</strong> must be mounted before riding. These parts must beinstalled by <strong>your</strong> authorized <strong>Ridley</strong> dealer.7.1.5.a. Stem/H<strong>and</strong>lebar:The following directions ONLY apply to 4ZA stem <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>lebars.For other br<strong>and</strong>s, refer to that manufacturer’s instructions.The stem <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>lebar are not firmly mounted <strong>and</strong> must be aligned<strong>and</strong> tightened before riding the <strong>bicycle</strong>. First, slightly loosen the stem<strong>and</strong> stem cap bolts. Turn the stem so that it is in line with the wheel<strong>and</strong> pointing exactly straight. Making sure the headset is properlyadjusted, tighten the stem bolts to 10Nm.7.1.5.c. Wheels:Unscrew <strong>and</strong> remove the bolt <strong>and</strong> 1 spring from the quick release<strong>and</strong> Insert the quick release skewer through the hub, with the leveron the left side <strong>of</strong> the <strong>bicycle</strong>. Place the spring onto the skewer <strong>and</strong>lightly thread the nut onto the skewer. Making sure the quick releaselever is in the open position (lever should be pointing straight out <strong>and</strong>“open” should be visible on the lever), continue to thread the nut untilalmost tight, <strong>and</strong> tightly close the lever.If the lever is too tight <strong>and</strong> does not fully clamp, open the lever,slightly loosen the nut, <strong>and</strong> re-clamp the lever. Likewise, if the leveris too loose, open the lever, slightly tighten the nut, <strong>and</strong> re-clamp thelever. Make sure that the lever is firmly clamped – failure to do somay cause the quick release to open while riding, resulting in seriousinjury or death.Rotate the h<strong>and</strong>lebar so that the h<strong>and</strong>lebar is centered in the stemclamp. The brake/shift levers should <strong>of</strong>fer a comfortable <strong>and</strong> saferiding position. Tighten the h<strong>and</strong>lebar clamp bolts on the stem to8Nm.7.1.5.b. Rear derailleur:These parts have to be installed according to that manufacturer’sinstructions.36


8. GETTING HOME WHEN SOMETHINGBREAKSUnless you're going for a short ride in the neighborhood, or you canwalk home or call someone to pick you up if something breaks, youshould never go for a bike ride without the following emergencyequipment:• 4mm, 5mm <strong>and</strong> 6mm Allen wrenches, used to tighten variousclamping bolts that may loosen• Patch kit <strong>and</strong> a spare inner tube• Tire levers• Tire pump or cartridge inflator with correct head to fit <strong>your</strong> tirevalves (see Section 6.7.2)• Some kind <strong>of</strong> identification (so people know who you are in case <strong>of</strong>an accident)• Spare cash (for a c<strong>and</strong>y bar, cool drink or emergency phone call)8.1. If you get a flat tire:Depress the tire valve to let all the air out <strong>of</strong> the tube (see Section6.7.2).Remove the wheel from the <strong>bicycle</strong> (see Section 6.1.3 or 4).Remove one bead <strong>of</strong> the tire from the rim by grasping it at a pointopposite the valve stem with both h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong>, at the same time, lifting<strong>and</strong> peeling one side <strong>of</strong> the tire <strong>of</strong>f the rim. If the bead is on too tightfor you to unseat it with <strong>your</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s, use tire levers to lift the beadcarefully over the tire rim. Remove the valve lock nut (if the valve hasone) <strong>and</strong> push the valve stem through the wheel rim.Remove the inner tube.Carefully check the outside <strong>and</strong> inside <strong>of</strong> the tire for the cause <strong>of</strong> thepuncture <strong>and</strong> remove the cause if it is still there. If the tire is cut, linethe inside <strong>of</strong> the tire in the area <strong>of</strong> the cut with something h<strong>and</strong>y -tape, a spare patch, a piece <strong>of</strong> inner tube, a c<strong>and</strong>y wrapper -whatever will keep the cut from pinching the inner tube.Either patch the tube (follow the instructions in <strong>your</strong> patch kit), or usea new one.WARNING: Patching a tube is an emergency repair. Carelesspatching or applying several patches can seriously weaken the tube,resulting in possible tube failure, which could cause you to losecontrol <strong>and</strong> fall. Replace a patched tube as soon as possible.Reinstall the tire <strong>and</strong> tube. Slip one tire bead over the rim. Insert thetube valve through its hole in the rim, but don't secure it with thelocknut yet. Feed the tube carefully into the cavity <strong>of</strong> the tire. Inflatethe tube just enough to give it some shape. Starting at the valve stem<strong>and</strong> working around both sides <strong>of</strong> the rim to the side opposite thevalve stem, use <strong>your</strong> thumbs to push <strong>and</strong> seat the other bead <strong>of</strong> thetire inside the rim. Be careful not to pinch the tube between the tirebead <strong>and</strong> the wheel rim. If you have trouble getting the last fewinches <strong>of</strong> bead over the edge <strong>of</strong> the rim with thumb pressure, use atire lever <strong>and</strong> be careful not to pinch the tube.CAUTION: If you use a screwdriver or any tool other than a tirelever, you are likely to puncture the tube.36 3737


Check to make sure the tire is evenly seated around both sides <strong>of</strong>the rim <strong>and</strong> that the tube is inside the tire beads. Push the valve steminto the tire to make sure that its base is seated within the tire'sbeads. Inflate the tube slowly to the recommended pressure (seeSection 6.7), all the while checking to make sure that the tire beadsstay seated in the rim. Screw down the valve stem locknut fingertight.Secure the valve locknut (Presta valve). Replace the valve cap.Replace the wheel in the bike (see Section 6.1.3 or 4).WARNING: Riding <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> with a flat or under-inflated tire canseriously damage the tire, tube <strong>and</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>, <strong>and</strong> can cause you tolose control <strong>and</strong> fall.8.2. If you break a spoke:A wheel with a loose or broken spoke is much weaker than a fullytensioned wheel. If you break a spoke while on a ride, do not ride<strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>, as the spoke may strike or get caught in the fork bladesor the drive train <strong>and</strong> cause you to fall.WARNING: A broken spoke seriously weakens the wheel <strong>and</strong> maycause it to wobble, striking the brakes or the frame. Riding with abroken spoke can cause you to lose control <strong>and</strong> fall.8.3. If <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> sustains an impact or youcrash:WARNING: A crash can put extraordinary stress on <strong>bicycle</strong>components, causing them to fatigue prematurely. Component'ssuffering from stress fatigue can fail suddenly <strong>and</strong> catastrophically,causing loss <strong>of</strong> control, serious injury or death.First, check <strong>your</strong>self for injuries, <strong>and</strong> take care <strong>of</strong> them as best youcan. Seek medical help if necessary.Next, check <strong>your</strong> bike for damage, <strong>and</strong> fix what you can.Then, when you get home, carefully perform the checks described inSection 7.1.4 <strong>and</strong> check for any other damaged parts. All bent,scored or discolored parts are suspect <strong>and</strong> should be replaced.CAUTION: After any crash or serious fall, return <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> to <strong>your</strong>Authorized Dealer for a thorough inspection.9. UPGRADING YOUR BIKE AND YOUREQUIPMENTThe variety <strong>of</strong> components <strong>and</strong> accessories available to enhance thecomfort, performance <strong>and</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> is almostendless. Your Authorized Dealer can help you select those that willwork best for the kind <strong>of</strong> riding that you do.Even if you are an experienced rider, don't assume you can properlyinstall <strong>and</strong> operate these components or accessories without firstreading any instructions that are enclosed with the product. Be sureto read, <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>, the instructions that accompany theproducts you purchase for <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>. If you have the slightestdoubt as to their suitability or about <strong>your</strong> ability to install themcorrectly, consult <strong>your</strong> Authorized Dealer.WARNING: Failure to install <strong>and</strong> operate any component oraccessory properly can result in serious damage to the <strong>bicycle</strong>, <strong>and</strong>serious injury or death to the rider.38


9.1. Comfort <strong>and</strong> Convenience AccessoriesOnce the bike fit (frame size, saddle position <strong>and</strong> angle, stem length<strong>and</strong> rise) is correct, the saddle becomes the single most importantcomfort accessory.The comfort <strong>of</strong> a <strong>bicycle</strong> saddle depends much more on how thesaddle shape relates to the rider's body than on the thickness ormaterial <strong>of</strong> the padding. Bicycle manufacturers select a saddle shapebased on their best guess <strong>of</strong> what's likely to be comfortable for mostbuyers <strong>of</strong> that particular <strong>bicycle</strong> model. But that doesn't mean it’sgoing to be the most comfortable shape for you. That's why <strong>your</strong>dealer stocks saddles which <strong>of</strong>fer a variety <strong>of</strong> shapes, padding,covering materials <strong>and</strong> prices. If the saddle on <strong>your</strong> new bike isuncomfortable, ask <strong>your</strong> dealer to suggest an alternative.If you're planning to spend an hour or more at a time on <strong>your</strong> bike,get a pair <strong>of</strong> cycling gloves. Their padded palms help keep <strong>your</strong>h<strong>and</strong>s from getting numb from the vibration <strong>of</strong> the h<strong>and</strong>lebars (thenumbness, called carpal tunnel syndrome, can become quite painfulif not taken care <strong>of</strong>), <strong>and</strong> they'll provide some abrasion protection for<strong>your</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s if you fall.Cycling shorts <strong>and</strong> cycling jerseys are both performance <strong>and</strong> comfortaccessories. There are two kinds <strong>of</strong> cycling shorts: the traditionalskintight Lycra shorts <strong>and</strong> loose-fit cycling shorts. Both are designedto reduce friction <strong>and</strong> chafing. The washable pod in the crotch <strong>of</strong> theshorts both cushions <strong>and</strong> protects against chafing. Wear themwithout underwear to avoid the undergarment's bunching up <strong>and</strong>chafing. Also available are undergarments designed to reducechafing when worn with regular street clothes. The jerseys havepockets in the back, so that the things you carry don't bang aroundwhen you ride. Many are made <strong>of</strong> special materials with propertiesthat improve riding comfort <strong>and</strong> performance.It's important to drink plenty <strong>of</strong> liquids before <strong>and</strong> during exercise.A water bottle is an essential companion on a longer ride.Some basic tools are also useful. The minimum tool kit you will needto make adjustments, perform <strong>maintenance</strong> <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>le emergencyrepairs should include:• a set <strong>of</strong> Alien wrenches in 2mm, 4mm, 5mm <strong>and</strong> 6mm sizes• a set <strong>of</strong> tire levers• a 6-inch adjustable wrench• a No. 1 Phillips screwdriver <strong>and</strong> a ¼-inch flat blade screwdriver• a tire pump• a tire patching kit <strong>and</strong> a spare tire tube.9.2. Performance UpgradesCAUTION: Changing the components on <strong>your</strong> bike may void thewarranty. To avoid voiding <strong>your</strong> warranty, check with <strong>your</strong> dealerbefore changing the components on <strong>your</strong> bike.The most popular way to improve the performance <strong>of</strong> a <strong>bicycle</strong> is tosubstitute higher priced drivetrain or brake components.Before attempting to upgrade <strong>your</strong> drivetrain or brakes, make surethat the components you plan to install are fully compatible with therest <strong>of</strong> the components on <strong>your</strong> bike. Your Authorized Dealer canhelp you determine component compatibility <strong>and</strong> resolvecompatibility conflicts.Another popular way to improve the performance <strong>of</strong> a <strong>bicycle</strong> is tosubstitute lighter weight "racing" components. Lighter wheels, tires,h<strong>and</strong>lebars <strong>and</strong> so on can enhance the performance <strong>of</strong> <strong>your</strong> bike, butyou must always keep in mind that light weight racing components39


are not intended to have the life expectancy <strong>of</strong> their heavier counterparts, <strong>and</strong> you must therefore exercise extra care in checking forsigns <strong>of</strong> stress fatigue (see Section 7).Because it is impossible to test all combinations <strong>of</strong> components, wecannot guarantee that a component you select will be appropriate orsafe when used with <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>.Suspension forks are also a popular component upgrade. Beforeinstalling a suspension fork on a non-suspension bike or installing afork with different travel or geometry characteristics than the originalfork on the <strong>bicycle</strong>, you must make sure that the frame is designed totake the change in geometry <strong>and</strong> the changes in stresscharacteristics which the change in fork can cause. Ask <strong>your</strong> dealerto check with the bike's manufacturer, or check with themanufacturer's technical support staff <strong>your</strong>self, before installing adifferent fork on <strong>your</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>.WARNING: Suspension forks, particularly the "double clamp" <strong>and</strong>"triple clamp" designs favored by downhill racers, put stresses on thehead tube <strong>and</strong> front part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>bicycle</strong> frame which may be beyondthe frame designer's original intent. Such stresses can result insudden, catastrophic frame failure, which can cause serious injury ordeath.Disc brakes are becoming a more common mountain bikeperformance upgrade. Most front suspension forks are designed toaccept a disc brake, <strong>and</strong> can take the added stresses at the brakemounting points. Be sure that the fork you are using is designed toaccept disc brake stresses.Most <strong>bicycle</strong> frames, however, were not designed for the stressesthat a rear disc brake can put on the seatstay or chainstay. Beforeattempting to install a rear disc brake, ask <strong>your</strong> dealer to check withthe bike's manufacturer, or check with the manufacturer's technicalsupport staff <strong>your</strong>self, to make sure that the frame can absorb thelocalized stresses at the disc brake's mounting points.WARNING: Rear disc brakes put stresses on the seatstay orchainstay that may be beyond the frame designers’ original intent.Such stresses can result in sudden, catastrophic frame failure, whichcan cause serious injury or death.Your Authorized Dealer has many other comfort <strong>and</strong> performanceaccessories that can increase <strong>your</strong> cycling enjoyment.10. LIMITEDWARRANTYRace Productions N.V., a Belgium Corporation located at 3980Tessenderlo, Belgium, makes the following Limited Warrantyconcerning <strong>Ridley</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>s <strong>and</strong> framesets:11.1. <strong>Ridley</strong> Limited Five (5) – Year WarrantyFrames: Subject to the following limitations, terms <strong>and</strong> conditions<strong>Ridley</strong> frames are warranted by Race Productions N.V. againstmanufacturing defects in materials <strong>and</strong>/or workmanship for five (5)years <strong>of</strong> the original owner if the frame is purchased an authorized<strong>Ridley</strong> dealer.The five (5) year warranty is conditioned upon the <strong>bicycle</strong> beingoperated under normal conditions <strong>and</strong> use, <strong>and</strong> properly maintained.This limited warranty does not apply to paint/finish, frame fixtures<strong>and</strong> components attached to the <strong>bicycle</strong>/frameset such as front forks,wheels, drive train, brakes, seatpost, h<strong>and</strong>lebar <strong>and</strong> stem or anysuspension related parts or components.Paint <strong>and</strong> finish <strong>of</strong> the frame are warranted against manufacturingdefects in materials <strong>and</strong>/or workmanship for a period <strong>of</strong> two (2)years.Components assembled to the <strong>bicycle</strong>/frameset such as wheels,drive train, brakes, seatpost, h<strong>and</strong>lebar <strong>and</strong> stem or any suspensionrelated parts or components are covered under the limited warranty<strong>of</strong> their manufacturers.This warranty is void if the <strong>bicycle</strong> or frameset was not purchasednew from or not properly assembled by an authorized <strong>Ridley</strong> dealer.11.2. Additional conditionsThis Limited Warranty is made only to the original owner <strong>of</strong> this new<strong>Ridley</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> or frameset purchased from an authorized <strong>Ridley</strong>dealer, <strong>and</strong> it shall remain in force only as long as the original ownerretains ownership <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ridley</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong>. This Limited Warranty is nottransferable.In order to exercise <strong>your</strong> rights under this limited warranty, the<strong>bicycle</strong> or frameset must be presented to an authorized <strong>Ridley</strong>dealer, together with a receipt, bill <strong>of</strong> sale or other appropriate writtenpro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> purchase that identifies the <strong>bicycle</strong> or frameset by serialnumber. Should this <strong>bicycle</strong>, frameset or any part be determined byRace Productions N.V. to be covered by this warranty, it will berepaired or replaced, at Race Productions N.V. sole option, which willbe conclusive <strong>and</strong> binding. The original owner shall pay all laborcharges connected with the repair or replacement <strong>of</strong> all parts. Underno circumstances does this limited warranty include the cost <strong>of</strong> travelor shipment to <strong>and</strong> from an authorized <strong>Ridley</strong> dealer. Such costs, ifany, shall be borne by the original owner.This limited warranty does not apply to normal wear <strong>and</strong> tear, nor toclaimed defects, malfunctions or failures that result from abuse,neglect, improper assembly, improper <strong>maintenance</strong>, alteration,collision, crash or misuse. This <strong>bicycle</strong> or Frameset has not beendesigned, engineered, distributed, manufactured, or retailed for usesin trick riding, ramp riding, jumping, aggressive riding, riding onsevere terrain, riding in severe climates, riding with heavy loads,commercial activities, or any similar activities; such uses maydamage the <strong>bicycle</strong>, can cause serious injury to the rider, <strong>and</strong> in allcases will void this warranty.41


11.3. <strong>Use</strong>ful product life cycleEvery <strong>Ridley</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> <strong>and</strong> frameset has a useful product life cycle.The length <strong>of</strong> that useful product life cycle will vary with theconstruction <strong>and</strong> materials <strong>of</strong> the <strong>bicycle</strong> or frameset, the<strong>maintenance</strong> <strong>and</strong> care the <strong>bicycle</strong> or frameset receives over itsuseful product life cycle, <strong>and</strong> the type <strong>and</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> use the <strong>bicycle</strong>or frameset is subject to. <strong>Use</strong>s in competitive events, trick riding,ramp riding, jumping, aggressive riding, riding on severe terrain,riding in severe climates, riding with heavy loads, commercialactivities <strong>and</strong> other types <strong>of</strong> non-st<strong>and</strong>ard use can dramaticallyshorten the useful product life cycle <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Ridley</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> or frameset.Any one or a combination <strong>of</strong> these conditions may result in anunpredictable failure <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Ridley</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> or frameset that would not becovered by this warranty. All RIDLEY BICYCLES AND FRAMESETSSHOULD BE PERIODICALLY CHECKED BY AN AUTHORIZEDRIDLEY DEALER, for indicators <strong>of</strong> stress <strong>and</strong>/or potential failure,including cracks, deformation, corrosion, paint peeling, dents, <strong>and</strong>any other indicators <strong>of</strong> potential problems, inappropriate use, orabuse. These are important safety checks <strong>and</strong> very important to helpprevent accidents, bodily injury to the rider <strong>and</strong> shortened usefulproduct life cycle <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Ridley</strong> <strong>bicycle</strong> or frameset.THIS IS AN INTEGRATED AND FINAL STATEMENT OF RACEPRODUCTIONS N.V.'S LIMITED WARRANTY.
