privilege is not universal. A few months later, a Sudanese friend of mine
was questioned about his opinion of Sudan’s overall state of being. He
responded in honest belief, his wealthy head resting on hands the exact
same shade as those of the orphans, “Everyone in Sudan is rich.” I saw
then the ignorance of humankind, the denial we entertain despite the
obvious suffering surrounding us. Before that moment, I had not noticed
the maturing effect hippotherapy had on me. No other experience
I learned more about
love and humankind that
summer than I ever have
before or since.

could have taken me past that awkward
phase of life characterized by extreme
embarrassment and self-consciousness
than this. Those children taught me that
self-actualization comes only through
others. I can never again be satisfied
with my own accomplishments but with
generosity and the way I affect the lives of others. I want to be a savior to
a people who have never before understood deliverance. I want to show
them the goodness of a human heart and most of all I want to see these
children, young and silent, almost inhuman in self-perception, become
the backbone of their land, the strength of their country and the pride of
their own lives.
