The air above my bed
whispers lies;
it flows into my ear
and paints you.
They say we dream
in black and white,
that our minds put
color where color belongs
when we awaken,
but you were red last night
and I was blue-green and
we were all soft and
and iridescent.
We had texture and shape and heat,
oil, water, form, contrast,
glaze, symmetry, and rhythm—
the beat of each stroke
against cold canvas.
Last night,
I saw you in full chroma,
a glittering lie.
