KU-RING-GAI CATENIAN CIRCLE 284Ku-Ring-Gai Circle CateniansSupport local employment programmeAs a result of the Global Financial Crisis in 2008 and 2009 many workers in Sydney’snorthern suburbs were confronted with retrenchment and redundancy from theiremployment. The issue was raised and discussed at Ku-Ring-Gai Circle meetings in early2009 because of the number of parishioners in the Pymble and St Ives parishes who hadlost their jobs as a result of the financial crisis. Two of Ku-Ring-Gai Circle’s brothers, JimPhelan and Atat Li-Kim-Mui, who have had many years of business and managementexperience, took the initiative to establish a sub-committee, and with another brother,Challice Moldrich, teamed up with a group of people at St Peters Anglican Church inLindfield who were embarking on a programme to conduct Retrenchment and RedundancySupport Workshops aimed at workers seeking re-employment.Since May 2009 the Retrenchment and Redundancy Support Workshops have beenconducted every two weeks at St Peters Anglican Church in Lindfield. Notices were placedin the weekly church bulletins of the Pymble and St Ives Catholic Church parishes invitingany parishioners, their friends and associates who had lost their jobs to attend the Lindfieldworkshops. Jim, Atat and Challice also regularly attended the workshops and assisted asmentors and leaders to the workshop participants. The workshops offered help, supportand encouragement to participants with such things as facing the future after losing yourjob, developing networks, targeting your job search, resume writing, job applications andpreparing for interviews. In the six months from May to November 2009, the workshops led to some very impressiveresults, with 40% of participants who attended the workshops finding employment. Duringthis period there were 14 workshops with an average of 7 participants and 9 leaders ateach workshop. Most participants attended between 1 and 9 workshops, but on averagewere at 4 of the workshops. At least 2 new participants were at each workshop. Each of the workshops run for approximately three hours, are completely confidential withonly first names used, and cover all industry sectors. Successful participants foundemployment in a variety of occupations with annual salaries ranging anywhere from$40,000 to over $200,000.The Catenian brothers who gave their time, support and assistance at the Lindfieldworkshops obtained great satisfaction and enjoyment in seeing this programme make areal difference to some people’s lives.KU-RING-GAI CATENIAN CIRCLE 2849EASTERN LINK NEWSLETTER 9 MARCH 2010

Editor’s Note: Tony Regan President of Pittwater Circle (312), asked Amanda Hickey - the wife of Past ProvincialPresident Alan Hickey - to address the Brothers and their Wives at dinner following the Circle’s December meeting, hereis what Amanda had to say. . .Brother President Tony I am honoured that you have asked me to speak tonight.I am sure many ladies here tonight would be much better and more entertaining however I will do myvery best and thank you for the privilege.I understand my theme is “CATENIANS THROUGH THE EYES OF A WOMEN” and what differencehas Catenians made in my life. The word “Catenians” came into my life just over 20 years ago. Alan was asked to join a group ofmen lead by Henning Harders RIP and Russell Collins (These two brothers were to become theinaugural Presidents of the Pittwater Circle) to discuss the ins and outs of such a group starting in thisarea. Well as we all know that was the beginning of the Pittwater Catenians. I remember well thenight of their inauguration which was a men only affair. However the ladies spent the evening at thehome of the lovely Jackie Collins always a charming hostess and how pleasant it was. From thebeginning I feel there was a special feeling. The common bond of our Catholic faith draws us whenopportunities like this arise into strong friendship with feelings of love and concern and interest. I hadno idea then how involved in the coming 20 years and more our life would be with the ties that bind usthrough Catenians. You men call each other Brother and I really feel that this group is very much an extension of family. As I like to tell stories I am now going to tell you two. Some of you when I jog your memories may wellremember them both. I hope to some they will be new stories.Amanda HickeyThe City of Sydney Catenians celebrated their 25 thAnniversary with dinner at Randwick Racecourse, somePittwater Catenians and their wives attended includingAlan and I, it was a special evening. The guest of honourwas Cardinal Clancy and during his address he told a tale Ihave always remembered. A Catenian friend of theCardinal received an anxious phone call from his daughterwho was travelling in England to say that she was ringingfrom a phone booth in a pub where she had taken refugeas a man was following her. The father here in Australiaasked his daughter for her exact location and told her tostay where she was and he would get help. With the aid ofhis directory the father phoned the nearest Catenian hecould find to the daughters location and very soon theEnglish Catenian came to his daughters rescue. The storyended with the daughter spending a few happy days withthe English Catenian and his family before resuming hertravels./CONT.14EASTERN LINK NEWSLETTER 14 MARCH 2010

My other story concerns my son and daughter-in-law Michael and Michele and their baby Clare who wasthen under 2. Michael is in the Navy and was sent to Bath in England to do a course at the Bath University,he had to find his own accommodation for his wife and daughter so Alan got out his directory and wrote tothe President of the Bath circle, that letter went to John Mill who actually had just retired but instead ofhanding it on he took responsibility himself to answer Alan and almost by return post a large envelopecontaining all sorts of information arrived for Michael and Michele. When they arrived in Bath Michaelcontacted John to thank him, they arranged to meet and became the closest of friends. When I askedMichele again only this week about this story she was very emotional when she spoke of the wonderful timesand the friendship they experienced during their time in Bath with the Mills. John Mills in fact gave Michele ajob, she is an architect and when she worked John’s wife Zosia looked after Clare who loved Zosia. Michaelwent to a formal Catenian dinner in fact their 400th meeting during his stay which was held in The Assemblyroom a very historic building in Bath; Michael recalls how special that evening was. Alan and I did have thepleasure of meeting these lovely people they organized an evening when we met other Catenians also.I would like to mention the Manly Circle, Alan was their first president and still remains a member of thatcircle, this week we have attended a funeral of one of their members, Carl Martin a truly charming anddelightful man. St Kieran’s at Manly Vale was full of Catenians and their wives. My brother-in-law BrianHamer is a member at Manly and as I have only one sister I feel this is another special bond for Gai andmyself.Alan has also been Provincial President. During that time a group of Catenians from England visited, so wevery much became part of their group during their time in Sydney. The Grand President then was RobinOakley Smith and his wife Betty, they became special friends. Their daughter Suzy came to Sydney with herfamily and I regularly kept in touch. Robin and Betty visited during that time and we shared special timestogether, sadly Robin has since suffered a severe stroke, we spoke with Betty this week, such a lovely lady. Now to my feelings; how could they not be many and varied Catenians and their lovely wives are very muchpart of Alan’s and my life. Your concerns are our concern; your pleasures are our pleasures; your joys areour joys. Like everyone I am moved at funerals, I have already mentioned one. The strength of the sharedbond shown by Catenian men and their wives at these times is so strong words fail me. I am alwayscomfortable in the company of the Catenians, I don’t have a brother but I feel I could call on any of you menhere and you would respond as if you were a brother. I must share something with you however before Ifinish Catenian nights when Alan goes and I stay home are not my favourite nights! I would rather he was athome somehow I have managed! To conclude I see Catenians as the greatest support for each other, I see Catenians and their wives as veryspecial friends. There is enrichment in my life because I have known Catenians. I note that in a group whoregularly spend time with us at the Benedictine Abbey at Jamberoo the men are Catenians. That thought onlyoccurred to me when I was preparing for tonight. Alan and I share great times with Catenians and their wivesmostly enjoyable times sometimes sad times, recent times with Gabrielle and Henning come to mind and Iam overcome with the privilege of the times we shared I acknowledge that we share something very specialand that is that we all know God and love Him. We know that He is in our lives and He loves us than we canimagine. I am sure this is the basis of our feelings in each other’s company we are on the same pagetravelling together on the same journey. Long may we share these times?Thank-you.”Amanda Hickey15EASTERN LINK NEWSLETTER 15 MARCH 2010

LIFE’S A LAUGH. . . . . . .A Priest was asked to dinner by one of his Parishioners, who he knew wasan unkempt housekeeper. When he sat down at the table, he noticed that the dishes were the dirtiestthat he had ever seen in his life."Were these dishes ever washed?" he asked his hostess, running his fingersover the grit and grime. She replied, "They're as clean as soap and water could get them."He felt a bit apprehensive, but blessed the food anyway and started eating. Itwas really delicious and he said so, despite the dirty dishes. When dinner was over, the hostess took the dishes outside and yelled, toher dogs "Here Soap! Here Water!"Postman: Is this letter for you? The name is smudged.Man: No, it can't be for me, my name is Smith.A woman goes into an antique shop and says to the owner, "When I was inhere last week I saw a big mug with a flat head that holds a lot of beer. I'dlike to buy it.""Sorry," replied the owner, but I can't sell you that.""Why not asked the customer?""Because, that’s my husband."Traffic policeman: 'Didn't you hear me shout to you to pull over?'Motorist: 'I'm awfully sorry. I thought you said "Good morning, Chief Constable." 'Traffic policeman: 'That's all right, sir. I just wanted to warn you that the traffic'spretty bad up ahead.A man went into a pet store and said to the owner, I'd like to buy a pet that isout of the ordinary - unusual. The pet shop owner replied, well, I have oneRairy-bird left... The man said, I've never even heard of a Rairy-bird thatcertainly makes it unusual, I'll take it! So the man brought home his newRairy-bird and soon found out that it had a huge appetite! It was alwayshungry!! Finally, the Rairy-bird was so big and fat that it wouldn't fit insidethe house anymore, much less the cage! The man said to himself: I've got toget rid of this animal-I can't afford to feed it! So he rented a huge dumptruck, put the Rairy-bird into the back, and drove to the edge of a high cliff. He then dumped the Rairy-bird out of the truck and over the cliff!! Thinkingthat all his troubles were over, the man was driving home when he suddenlyheard this singing coming from the back of the dump- truck: "It's a long longway to tip-a-Rairy!!A woman woke her husband one night and said, 'There's a burglar in the kitcheneating my home-made steak and kidney pie!''Oh dear: said her husband.
