With so much at stake, you need to be there, too. Commit one dayfor your patients, your practice and your profession by signing up for Texas <strong>Medical</strong>Association’s First Tuesdays at the Capitol. The dates are: Feb. 6, March 6, April 3, andMay 1. During First Tuesdays, you and your fellow physicians from across Texas willmeet with your elected officials about the issues that will affect your patients and yourpractice. Applicants are judged on character and ability; financial need isconsidered, but not mandatory and scholarships are renewable annually if studentsdemonstrate progress and ability in their medical studies. Even though you do not haveto use the National Provider Identifier number until May 23, 2007, <strong>Travis</strong> <strong>County</strong><strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Society</strong> is encouraging its members to apply now.There are approximately 800,000 active physicians in the US and many, many otherproviders who all have to get their NPI number to get paid. Even the health plans will beusing a NPI number so they also have to apply. If you wait until the last minute, it willaffect your revenue. Physicians must apply for an NPI number to file claims (Medicare,Medicaid, Commercial, Workers Comp, etc). This is part of the HIPAA regulations.UPIN, TPI and other ID numbers will go away.
