Continued...The table below shows clearly how the Group has performed in individual categories and clearly highlights those areas we areperforming well in and those we are failing to. Appearance received no 5.0 out of 5.0 scores this half year which is disappointingto see, efforts must be made to improve performance in this area to ensure the best possible impression is given off to visitors andmembers of the public. A Good Neighbour received the most 5.0 out of 5.0 scores which indicates that our sites are having a positiveinfluence on the communities they operate in and that Kier is interacting proactively with its neighbours.Best results January to June 20125.0 score TotalConsiderateEnvironmentAppearanceA good neighbourRespectfulSafeResponsibleAccountableJanuary 1 2 1 1 1 2 8February 3 3 129March 1 12 1 2 2 1 10April 3 5 1 3 214May 1 555 319June 1 22 1 1 2 2 11First half 2012 4 14 0 19 5 12 12 5 61Average of below average results for January to June 20123.0 or belowConsiderateEnvironmentAppearanceA good neighbourRespectfulSafeResponsibleAccountableTotalJanuary 0February 2 11 4March 0April 1 1May 1 1June 0First half 2012 2 0 0 0 2 0 1 1 6Kier Group plcConsiderate Constructors Scheme performance review - first half 201208

Examples of best practice: 5.0 out of 5.0ConsiderateCommunication on this project is achallenge in itself as the project isoperating in three different locations,in Tilbury Docks, from Mikes BoatyardLeigh-on-Sea and the Pier itself eachhaving a different set of ‘neighbours’ andinterested parties. Notifications havebeen distributed to all these groups withinformation specific to their locations andinclude such bodies as the Coast Guards,Lifeboat Institute, the rivers Fire Brigade,POL Authority, River Police and HarbourMasters. Access to the work place isvariously by road to the Docks and MikesBoatyard and the river Thames. Accessonto the Pier is by foot, the miniaturerailway on the pier, golfing buggies andboat all of which have special permits orlicences in place including permit parkingclose to the pier on land for operativesand delivery vehicles for small items. The main delivery route is by water fromMikes Boatyard. The TMP includes for allthese variations. Smoking is not permittedat any time in any location. Access tothe offices are clear and level albeitnot normally accessible to the public.EnvironmentPolicy document is on display withdetailed file and posters in the inductionroom. An Ecologist has been employedwith badgers, newts and bats beingidentified for protection with newt pondsand hibernation facilities being provided. This is a design and build projectwhere recycling and elements of valueengineering have resulted in ceiling tilesbeing reprocessed and reused, hardcoreand excavated materials being reusedon site. Timber is recycled through thecommunity scheme with rates of 97.3and 100% being recorded. Noise meters, motion sensors on lighting, machinesturned off when not in use plus locallabour and subcontractors with minibuses and bikes also used to reduceimpact. New performance targets havebeen set with Solar PV’s, BiomassBoilers and LED lights being used andwind power being considered. Materialswith lower embodied energy are beingconsidered. ‘Eco’ cabins with PIR’s,double glazing etc; are in use on the site.AppearanceNo reportsA good neighbourNoisy operations do not start before8.30pm and noise levels are monitoredand recorded. Special letter drops informneighbours about any disruptive operationslikely to affect them. John is contactableby phone during working hours andthe security guard out of hours. Johnwould deal with complaints; a log is keptin the office. Operatives are told aboutcompliments. A meeting was held withNorfolk Park Community Group to keepthem informed of developments. Snowwas cleared form local roads andfootpaths and the areas gritted. BT cablenearby was stolen and help was givento a neighbour to restore the service.Questionnaires have been sent out butresponse has been minimal. Additionalyellow lines have been painted on roadsto avoid congestion and charges paid.RespectfulAs stated following the first visit thesite provides spacious and very wellequipped welfare facilities near to thework area including a canteen, male, female and disabled toilets, a changing /drying room with lockers and a shower. The appearance of operatives wasappropriate, PPE must be worn includinggloves; there is a ‘cover up’ policy whichis monitored by the site management. Theinduction procedure deals with shoutingor abusive/ offensive language as well ascourteous behaviour towards the public. No offensive material was seen. Musicplayers are banned and mobile phonescan only be used in designated areas. The site provides branded companywork-wear for operatives and a supplyof clean PPE for visitors. There arepallet mounted toolbox and water buttcarriers so that operatives do not haveto lift heavy items onto scaffolding.SafeThe Health and Safety plan is reviewedand updated as work progresses. Safetyinspections are completed by Companypersonnel and the BSI. A separate gatedand barriered footpath is provided to thewelfare facilities through the Gatehouse.Barriered walkways are then providedto and within the work areas. The publicare not at risk from falling debris etc.The Gateman ensures public safety atthe entrance. Plant does not move ‘offSite’. All accidents and ‘near misses’are recorded and followed up. Updatingsafety briefings form part of ‘Toolbox’talks. A safety incentive schemeinvolves all Sub-contractors on Site. The excellent SUSA behaviour safetyscheme is used to promote safetystandards. There is an evacuation planand the last drill was held in March.ResponsibleThe nearest A & E hospital informationis displayed. Operatives’ CSCS andmedical conditions are recorded andkept on site. All first aiders continueto be acknowledged and identified. Allvisitors sign in and all CSCS cards arechecked. As appropriate all visitors areinducted or escorted when on site and allinductions are site specific. Apprenticesare taken on and operatives are providedwith ID. There is an Equal Opportunities/Diversity Policy in place and drugs/alcohol policy: occupational health adviceis provided. The site provides “electroniccigarettes” to encourage operativesto give up smoking. There is specificinformation online for the general publicabout the site on the school web site.AccountableThe CCS banner and poster are displayedwhere they can be seen by the public.John is well aware of the CC Schemeand operatives are told at induction.
