MOvemberMusic: sponsored bywww.aldeburgh.co.uk/aymLeicester RidersOne-On-One With Frank from theFun LovingCriminalsFrank cheering on Leicester RidersBasketball and hip-hop have gone hand in hand ever since the track 'Basketball' was created by Kurtis Blow back in 1984. Hip-hop is oftenthought of as being linked with streetball and those who play the game on the most unforgiving of surfaces, where taking a charge mightresult in breaking a bone and putting you out for a few weeks. But go into any BBL arena today, sit in the luxury stands, hear the shoes squeaking on the newly polished hardwood and you'll still hearLil Wayne, 50 Cent or T.I. pumping through the crowd. There's something about the music that gets into your soul. Maybe that's why it'sintertwined with hoops – both passions penetrate the soul like a tattooist’s needle pierces the skin. They go deep. And like a tattoo, once you've experienced basketball, itstays with you. Just ask Frank Benbini of alternative hiphopgroup Fun Loving Criminals.“I'm born and bred in Leicester. It's my home town. I'vealways loved basketball, even when I was young, I've alwaysfollowed it. I used to be the captain of the team when I wasat school. I know that feeling. You see the game, you watchthe players fill the court and then you're hooked. You don'tknow it, but the game has you. But it doesn't just infect you.It grabs those around you. I've got a little girl now, and sheloves it. She's got the t-shirts and comes to the games.”It doesn't just stop with family either. It spreads toneighbourhoods and communities.“I see when I go to the home games, there's a lot ofvoluntary work that goes on, a lot of community work. It's great that there are a lot of little kids who go so it'ssomewhere that I can take my little girl as well. And the littlekids love it. They watch the players and then they want tojust run on the court at half time, they can't wait.”Yeah, basketball is a sport first and foremost, but it's also acommunity. It reaches everybody: from young children totheir parents to international musicians.“If everyone else is helping out and pulling together, I waswondering if there was anything I could do. That's when Iwas told that the Riders didn't have a theme song.” So Frankwent away, wrote and recorded a track. That track becamethe theme song for the Leicester Riders 2009/2010 season.Basketball and hip-hop working together. But the relationship between basketball and musicdidn't end there for the Leicester Riders, not with Frank'sinvolvement: “I was sitting at the last home Riders homegame and I thought 'I want to do a new track now'. It's toolate for me to still play basketball but because I'm involvedheavily in music, I figured that that was something I couldgive back. I could create a 2010/11 theme track for theRiders.”Remember, this is an international musician wanting tohelp the Leicester Riders....“So, I made the track with my brother and my other musicpartners. We all put into this track.I think it's great support down at the Riders and I justwanted to give something back.”And that's what he's done. On 6th November, the first 100people that came into the arena to watch Riders vs. Heatwere given a copy of 2009/10 season theme track, PLUSthe brand new 2010/11 theme for the Leicester Riders. And that's not all Frank is giving back to the LeicesterRiders. He's also throwing a Christmas party on the 30thDecember at the Donkey Venue on Welford Road: “All theRiders fans are invited. I'll be inviting all the Leicester playersand coaching staff too and tickets can be bought from theDonkey Venue.”Frank's final thoughts are perhaps the most telling abouthis love for the team: “I feel like the club doesn't get enoughcredit for everything it's doing. It's getting overlooked.”Hopefully, with his new theme song for the Riders, theteam won’t be overlooked for much longer.WINAspire have teamed up with the Leicester Riders to offerour readers the chance to win a family ticket to any homegame in 2010. For example, there was a young girl in my class that was wearing ablack tracksuit. She was very down and withdrawn, soI asked her what colour t-shirt she had on under hertracksuit top, she said red, so I encouraged her to take offher black tracksuit top and dance around to keep warm ifshe got cold. She did and within minutes her mood hadaltered. She was more energetic and cheerful.“One day, one of themums asked me whatqualifications I had for mycolour ideas; so I decidedto become qualified asa colour therapist andto learn more about thesubject. I trained at TheIris International School ofColour Therapy, completinga two-year, home studydiploma course as a colourcounsellor and healer inMay 2004. In October2004, I qualified as a colourtherapy teacher trainer.I see clients on a one-to-one basis usually within myhome, but I’m happy to travel. In fact, I stayed with onelady for two weekends at her home to work with her. Thefirst session usually involves colour counselling and areflection reading; session two looks at diet, Bach Flowerremedies and visualisation with positive affirmations;session three involves art therapy. Then, depending ontheir circumstance, sessions four and five involve arttherapy, colour healing with silk scarves and crystals andvisualisation with positive affirmations. Other sessionsinvolve movement and sound. The benefits of colour therapy include relaxation, healing, clarity, renewed motivation, and openness with somethingsimple to change your mood.I’ve helped people in numerous different walks of life, including people that are blind, deaf, have special needsor have suffered a stroke. I’ve seen many people on aone-to-one basis; I chose to become qualified as a ColourLife Coach in August and I am looking forward to teachingpeople what I’ve learned with fun and lightness on the way.My next course is in the New Year, costing £35 per person. They take place on a Saturday or Sunday from 10am until4pm, and I ask that everyone brings a lunch they canshare with the group.”With such a wealth of experience, Aspire have awardedBarbara a Certificate of Recognition for Spiritual Guidance2010. Spiritual DevelopmentMusic: sponsored bywww.aldeburgh.co.uk/aymSpiritualHealingFromPersonal AlchemyImages copyright to Personal AlchemyPromoting health and well-being, and helping tobring us into balance, colour and crystal therapiesare powerful and effective healing tools. Soothingand alleviating a wide range of ailments, thesecomplementary therapies can help with physical, emotional, mental and spiritual problems.Offering both colour and crystal healing, PersonalAlchemy can provide you with all the advice you needto bring your emotions, physical health and energyback into balance. Personal Alchemy founder, MaureenCooper, has studied and practiced these therapies formore than 15 years and so is able to offer a wealth ofadvice and knowledge on the subject.Acknowledging the difference Maureen has madeto the lives of her clients, through colour and crystalhealing, and her dedication to these therapies, Aspirehave selected her for our Certificate of Recognition forSpiritual Healing 2010.A holistic treatment, crystal healing is an ancienttherapy which uses individual stones to absorbnegative energies and promote well-being. Maureenexplains: “The nature of their structure means thatcrystals hold different vibrations, which may be used toheal in different ways and alleviate different conditions. The vibrations given off by each crystal is unique, sothey may be used to harmonise the body in variousways.”There are many books and courses which provide astarting point for those interested in finding out moreand trying it for themselves, however, Maureen hasbetter advice, she says: “There are many publicationswhich explain the properties of each crystal and whatthey may be used for, but I believe it’s better to workback to front. I would recommend spending sometime holding different crystals and seeing which onesappeal to you before looking up their properties. Oftenyou will be drawn to the crystals that your body needsand so some will feel right and some will feel wrong,it’s all about finding out what your body needs.”Once you’ve found the right stones for you, there aremany ways to absorb their vibrations, Maureen says:“Crystals can be worn as jewellery or carried in yourpocket; how you carry or hold them does not haveany effect on their power or properties, as the energygoes to where it is needed. Most crystals are also quitegentle, allowing you to hold or wear them for aslong as you like, however, there are some that aremore powerful, which should not be used for prolongedlengths of time. I would certainly urge people to usecrystals with some awareness of their properties.”From reducing pain to focusing the mind, combatingstress to energising the body, the wealth of crystalsavailable means many physical and emotionalproblems can be soothed. The choice of crystal isinfluenced by the underlying source of the problem orailment, so for someone who is suffering from anxietyMaureen would look at the underlying cause of theproblem in order to offer advice. Maureen explains:“No one crystal solves all problems. Anxiety couldbe work-related, caused by emotional problems orit may be linked to the winter blues. Each problemwould require a different crystal. For example, deepblue agate is very calming while pink stones, like rosequartz, sooth emotional hurts. Yellow citrine protectsagainst negativity and brings sunlight into your life inthe depths of winter.”For a powerful relaxant, Maureen uses rose quartzdiscs and places them on the face of the client for adeep relaxation treatment. She says: “I arrange thestones on the face in a particular way and leave themto work whilst completing additional healing. I use roseessential oil at the same time and the combinationof treatments not only soothes and calms, it can alsohave very positive effects on the skin. I often use thistreatment at Body and Soul shows and even thoughthis is done in a busy, chaotic environment, thosewho experience it always report positive effects and afeeling of deep relaxation.”Alongside offering advice and guidance on crystalhealing, Maureen is also passionate about thedifference colour therapy can make to people’slives. She says: “Colour operates in a holistic waybecause it works at the physical, emotional, mentaland spiritual levels of our being, helping to bringbalance and harmony where it is needed. Each colourof the rainbow links to a different gland and area inthe body, so if something is wrong we can look to thecorresponding gland to see which colour may help toalleviate the problem. Colour therapy works by lookingat the underlying causes of an individual’s symptomsand the overall picture of their health.”By looking at an individual’s energy profile, Maureenis able to establish what colours they are lacking andhow they can incorporate certain colours into theirlives. Aspire Sales Executive, Stacey Wragg, recentlysought advice from Maureen about combating stress.Stacey says: “Maureen was able to offer me somegreat advice on incorporating the right colours intomy life. Alongside working a high pressured job, Ihave recently been house hunting, which as everyoneknows can be the source of a lot of stress. Maureenadvised me to wear more blue for a calming, relaxingeffect, so by choosing blue clothing and bringing moreblue into my life I have found it much easier to escapefrom the chaos and pressures of my life. I’m going tocontinue to use her advice and am looking forward to acalmer future.”How you choose to incorporate colours is completelydown to the individual, as Maureen explains: “Often,we are drawn to the colours we need. It may be assimple as incorporating more red or orange foods formore energy or relaxing, balancing green foods forthose who are feeling stressed. Someone might wearclothing of the appropriate colour, such as a scarf or apiece of jewellery or even a whole outfit in a particularshade. It can helpful to have a piece of dark blueglass near the computer to rest your eyes or to have apicture or poster on a wall.”Colour breathing may be used to clear the brain andcan relax or energise us depending on our needs. Todo this we can meditate whilst visualising the chosencolour – say blue to help with stress or yellow for amorning pick me up – and picture ourselves breathingit in and then breathing out all of the rubbish in ourlives.Whether you’re stressed out, in need of an energyboost or just don’t feel yourself, colour therapy canhelp. Maureen says: “It’s a very safe and very gentletherapy; and the guiding principle is to get a balanceof the rainbow colours in our lives. Colour works at alllevels to sooth us, both emotionally and physically, andcan help correct imbalances and energy blockages.”With 15 years of experience under her belt, Maureenknows the importance of finding a good practitioner, she adds: “The relationship and rapport that existsbetween client and practitioner is an important part ofany complementary therapy, as you need to be able totrust in their abilities and be able to leave your burdensbehind. Specialist BreedsMan’sBest FriendTheKomondorMusic: sponsored bywww.aldeburgh.co.uk/aymThe benefits of owning a pet are enormous and well documented,as they can help to keep you happy and healthy. In fact, research hasshown that pet owners are much healthier than those who choosenot to care for an animal. According to the Pet Health Council, studies have shown that those who own a pet have lower levels ofcholesterol and lower blood pressure (http://www.pethealthcouncil.co.uk/About-Us/People-and-Pets-Stress-Busting.html). However, owning a pet isn’t just good for your physical health, animals arealso said to help combat stress, so there are plenty of reasons tointroduce a four-legged friend into your family.Dogs are great for keeping you active, as walking them twice aday will guarantee you get your recommended weekly exercise. However, it can be difficult to know where to look for thatperfect pet, as different breeds boast different characteristics andtemperaments, but there is also the risk of your dog inheritingcertain genetic conditions.Fascinating facts about our four-legged friends...• A dog’s sense of smell is 30 times stronger than a human’s, as theyhave over 200 million scent receptors.• The first guide dog was given to a blind person in 1938.• Basenji’s are the only breed of dog that does not bark.• Dalmatian puppies are born without their spots; they developthem as they get older.• A greyhound can run up to 45mph, making it the fastest dog onearth.• The Chinese Crested breed of dog only grows hair on its head, tailand legs. The Komondor, a Hungarian flock guardian, was bred to guard sheep on the Hungarianplains. Their unique coat of dreadlocksprotects them from weather and predators.I became a member of the Komondor ClubGB, researched the breed and helped out atDiscover Dogs in London. A couple of yearslater I received a phone call to say a litterhad been born and Pusztaalom Aniko Vedo‘Tangle’ to his friends, came to live with us.Having such a rare breed, I decided to showTangle. We attended our first show at theBirmingham National Championship Showin 2009 and he was awarded Best Puppy inBreed at just over 6 months old.Raising a puppy can take up a lot of time and money, and can causea lot of heartache if they grow-up to have major health problems.Buying a dog from a reputable breeder can ensure your new pet willbe healthier, as they screen their dogs for genetic conditions, suchas hip dysplasia, eye abnormalities or autoimmune diseases. Goodbreeders are dedicated to producing the finest litters and select onlythe best and most suitable parents, ensuring the offspring is also thebest in terms of health and temperament. Liz Young is onewoman that has a life-long love of this wonderfulbreed.“My love affair with English Springer Spanielsbegan as a very small child with my grandfather’sfavourite gundog called Sky, family folklore hasit that I learnt to walk by holding on to his tail. Hechaperoned me over fields and woods and wasmy faithful companion, when he wasn’t working. Ibought my very own English Springer in 1974 andhad my first working litter in 1976 but it wasn’t until1998 that I bought my first show dog, having my firstshow strain litter of pups in 2004. I’ve since madea conscious effort to combine the best qualitiesof the two, specialising in dual-purpose EnglishSpringer Spaniel dogs, that have a pedigree basedin Norfolk. The challenge for some of us who showour dogs is to try and keep the working instinctand to have Springers who are truly ‘fit for function’as the Kennel Club have decreed. We had a litterof pups in August whose ancestry is 75% dualpurpose.I think English Springer Spaniels are adelightful breed to live with and, if like me, you don’tfancy a gym membership, I’d recommend getting aSpringer; they’re guaranteed to always be ready fora walk or play.”Liz currently shares her home with three 13-weekoldpuppies: a liver and two blacks, as well as fouradult dogs: three females and an adult male. At thetime of going to print, Liz was looking to re-home thethree puppies, so if you’re interested in welcoming aSpringer Spaniel into your home, call her as soon asyou can to see if they’re still available. Liz added: “Idon’t breed my bitches to make money so I probablyonly have one litter every 18 months to two years,so there’s no plans for any puppies in 2011.”English Springer Spaniels are affectionate andexcitable medium-sized dogs that often greetswith a friendly wag of its tail. The breed is wellproportioned, but there are apparent differencesbetween the working and show lines; in fact, thegene pools are almost completely segregated andhave been for at least 70 years (http://www.essft.com/fieldshow.html#FIELD). Working SpringerSpaniels tend to have shorter, coarser coats thanthe show dog and show Springers are generallymore thickly boned and heavier than their workingcounterparts. Legislation was passed in 2007making the docking of the tail on any breed of dogillegal, so Springers no longer have docked tails, unless guaranteed as puppies to be a working dog.Although the average lifespan for English SpringerSpaniels is 12 - 14 years, the breed does suffer froma handful of health complaints - for more informationon these, please visit www.englishspringer.org.For peace of mind, all parents and puppies bred byLiz are Hip Scored, as well as DNA tested for knownthe health issues. As Springer Spaniels are so versatile and can betrained to do almost anything, they’re put to work innumerous situations; as well as working gun dogs, you’ll also see English Springer Spaniels workingas rescue dogs and with customs and the policeas sniffer dogs. Liz has had success in both theworking and showing arena, having bred a FieldTrial Champion in the 70s and won three first placesat Crufts in the last 40 years.Contact Liz Young Tel: 01527 854774Email: lizyoung@care4free.net22 ASPIREASPIRE 23

Specialist BreedsMusic: sponsored bywww.aldeburgh.co.uk/aymVulcanKennelsAspire’s Choice For Specialist BreederIntelligent, playful and active, poodles have been man’spopular and loyal companion for centuries. Having beencharmed by these versatile and entertaining dogs, AnnCambray Coppage, of Taunton, Somerset, has learnt morethan most about this wonderful breed and now shares herhome with her brood of 12. Recognising her passion anddedication to her poodles, and the breed as a whole, Aspirehave chosen Ann for our Certificate of Recognition forSpecialist Breeder. When asked about her love of the poodle breed, Ann says:“I think that once you’ve had a poodle, no other dog willever quite measure up. All of the different sizes possess thesame adorable characteristics; they’re fun to be around, they make fantastic companions and above all they’re justan all round lovely dog and a super breed.”Sales Executive, Barbara Stone, says: “As a reputablebreeder, Ann has allowed many families to experience thejoy of owning a poodle and her knowledge of the breedmeans that anyone welcoming one of her puppies into theirfamily is guaranteed a wealth of support and advice. I justhad to nominate Ann for this Certificate of Recognition andI’m delighted she was chosen as the winner.”It was in the mid-50s that Ann’s love of poodles began, when she trained as a kennel maid at Vulcan Kennels, thenlocated in Sussex, and it wasn’t long before she had hervery own standard. Ann says: “I got my first poodle on the1st March 1963, she was a white standard poodle whobecame a champion, which I thought was just super. Like allpoodles, she was a wonderful dog, happy, intelligent andextremely affectionate.”Poodles are amongst the most intelligent breed of dog, justone of the characteristics that endear them to their owners, and were originally used for retrieving from water. Theirintelligence also led to the poodle becoming a popularfeature in circuses, as they loved the attention and thechance to play, and this quality manifests itself today inagility and obedience.Ann says: “They are very adaptive and are willing to dojust about anything, but it’s their sense of humour andplayfulness which really sets them apart. As poodles pickthings up so easily, it makes them very easy to train andthey are especially good at obedience. However, they canbe rather cheeky and often think they know what they’reexpected to do, at times they really play to the gallery andenjoy acting the clown.”Ann has bred many champions and reared many littersover the years, but now concentrates on breeding just onelitter a year, as she explains: “I love rearing puppies, but itis a lot of hard work and is very time consuming. I used tobreed three to four litters per year, but now I only breed forpeople who have previously had puppies from me and arelooking for a new addition. I will hopefully have a new litterin the spring, but that’s all I have planned for 2011.”It’s not just because of the hard work that Ann has decidedto reduce her breedingprogramme, she is alsodetermined that herpuppies only go to caring, loving homes. Ann says: “Ihave to think long and hardabout breeding in order tofind a good home for mypuppies and I always havea hips score test completedprior to breeding. TheInternet has made iteasier for less discerningindividuals to sell all sortsof poodle cross breeds,as there are no rules andregulations.”With their non-moultingcoat, poodles make forvery clean house pets, butwhilst they do not shed, they do require regular bathing, grooming and clipping. The mane of long hair covering the ribs is sometimes calledthe ‘lion’ trim and provides protection to the chest. Therear is clipped close to facilitate swimming, with hair left toprotect joints on the legs, and a tuft of hair is left at the endof the tail. A poodle’s coat should be thick and curly so thatit remains waterproof.Whether you’re looking for a standard, a miniature or a toy,Ann is confident that once you’ve shared your home withone you’ll never look back. These colourful characters makeideal pets, as they adore children and are happy to mix withother breeds. To find out more about Ann’s poodles, youcan contact her on 01823 400481.Vulcan Kennels, Houndsmoor, Milverton,Taunton, Somerset TA4 1QDGEMSON PORTUGUESEWATER DOGSSince 1987Home of:TOP DOGTOP STUD DOGTOP BROOD BITCHTOP PUPPYand TOP BREEDERAll breeding stock health tested.Puppies available to the righthomes from January 2011.Contact: Jayne Johns T: 01945 430139 E: GemsonPWD@aol.com W: www.GemsonPWD.com24 ASPIREASPIRE 25

However, it’s middle-incomefamilies and high earners that are going to be hit the hardest through the cuts to childbenefit and working tax credits, and state pension reforms, which will mean that from 2020both men and women will be working until the age of 66.Whatever your financial situation, planning for the future and making the most of yourcash is essential. From pensions to investments, ensuring you get the right advice can helpyou achieve the lifestyle you crave for your retirement. Facts and figureshave been poured over by the news media and some of themore basic issues have become clearer. To most people the cutsproposed appear to be less than were expected. The proposalsare the biggest spending reduction package since the WorldWar II, spread over a five year period, and many of the majoreffects caused by such as job cuts and tax rises will not becomeapparent for many months to come.”Peter was more than happy to offer us his comments and usinga case study of Debbie Smith*, a mother of two and a higher ratetax payer, he gave us some tips on what individuals in a similarsituation should do...I am a higher rate taxpayer with two children, how will therecent Spending Review affect my income? If the proposals are ratified by Parliament, the clearest short-termeffect you will experience is on your payments for Child Benefit. The proposal is for Child Benefit to be removed if there is ahigher rate taxpayer in the family. On the face of it this wouldmean a cut in benefit payments for you of £33.70 per week orover £1,750 per year. Are there any steps I can take to limit the impact it will haveon my finances?Basically, one of the steps that you can take is to do all you canto lower your taxable income below the higher rate threshold. If you are employed, the simplest step you can take is to reduceyour taxable income below the threshold by arranging to takepart of your pay as pension contributions. It works like this; under the proposals you will start to pay higherrate tax – and lose your child benefit if you have taxable earningsover £43,875 per year. So for example, if you had taxableearnings of say £50,000 per year you would lose the benefit. However, if you arranged for a reduction in salary to say £43,000and asked your employer to make payments of the £7,000saved into your pension, it would reduce your taxable incometo below the higher rate threshold and you will still receive theChild Benefit. This is called Salary Sacrifice and some of the benefits would be:• You will be making a significant annual contribution towardsyour savings for old age.• You will not lose the £33.70 per week child allowance.• In addition, your employer will pay less National Insurance foryou – a further saving. Also, if you have additional taxable income from investments ordividends from a share portfolio, you should take steps to cutthis taxable income too, switch into such as Investment Bondsor gradually moving them into more tax efficient holdings suchas ISAs.Will it have any effect on my pension or retirement plans? The clearest effect is the proposal to raise the State PensionAge. The proposals will speed up the rise in Women’s StatePension Age and actually slow down the rate of rise of Men’sState Pension Age. Women aged 55 and under are faced withwatching the date of their state pension accelerate away fromthem, going up from from 60 to 66 over a ten year period.Following the faster increase to 66, the government is alsoconsidering future increases to the State Pension Age and in myopinion in future we can expect it to rise progressively. Is there any other advice you could offer someone in mysituation?Common sense says, do all you can to be responsible for yourown financial security; you cannot guarantee that the Stateprops of pension payments or benefits will always be there foryou when you need them, so save as much as you can afford. In particular, I would strongly recommend that you take outyour full ISA allowance each year while it is available. Successivegovernments are slowly eroding tax concessions and I feel thatthe one they will leave last will be the low tax status of ISAs.www.firstlightinvestments.co.ukIf you have any questions or comments about the above pleasecontact Peter at peter@firstlightinvestments.co.uk or bycalling him on 01572 725400.* Debbie Smith is not the client’s real name.N.B. None of the above should be taken as advice to invest money. The value of investments can go down as well as up.ASPIRE 27

All thistime spent staring at the TV screen may affect a child’s development, both physically and socially, as it takes them away from exploringtheir surroundings and interacting with others. One way to get your children more active and encourage them toappreciate the world around them is by getting them out on theirbikes.
