Dear Friends and Colleagues:You are cordially invited <strong>to</strong> participate in a Symposium on Past & Present <strong>Lao</strong> His<strong>to</strong>ry organizedby Satjadham, and internet-based <strong>Lao</strong> literary group, and the <strong>Lao</strong> American communityin the San Francisco Bay Area. This symposium will be held at the University of California,Berkeley on May 3-4, 2003.The symposium’s dual objectives are <strong>to</strong> share academic and personal knowledge on thehis<strong>to</strong>ry of <strong>Lao</strong>s, and <strong>to</strong> help define the true essence and profound meaning of“KhuamPenh<strong>Lao</strong>” (<strong>Lao</strong> identity and awareness). Participants will have chance <strong>to</strong> listen <strong>to</strong>and discuss with scholars, researchers, former <strong>Lao</strong> government officials, students, andcitizens from all walks of life driven by a common interest <strong>to</strong> learn amore about the past inorder <strong>to</strong> be better prepared for the future. Proceedings will be made available <strong>to</strong> all participantsand other interested individuals or groups.The first day of the symposium will cover the LanXang period from 1353 <strong>to</strong> 1893 and thesecond day, the more modern period (1893 <strong>to</strong> the present). On Day 1, major <strong>to</strong>pics will bethe rise and fall of the LanXang kingdom as an independent nation. On Day 2, special emphasiswill be given <strong>to</strong> more contemporary issues including the <strong>Lao</strong> Issara, Neo<strong>Lao</strong>/Royalgovernment and LDPR/<strong>Lao</strong> Diasporas. Within those broad outlines, speakers will share theirknowledge and present papers on selected <strong>Lao</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry related <strong>to</strong>pics, including the contributionby the various <strong>Lao</strong> ethnic groups (Hmong, Iu-Mien, Khmu, <strong>Lao</strong>, Lue, ThaiDam, andmore) <strong>to</strong> the <strong>Lao</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry.Since this symposium is the first of its kind organized by the <strong>Lao</strong> people, it has generated alot of interest and inquiries from the <strong>Lao</strong> people scattered around the globe, as well as fromscholars interested in <strong>Lao</strong> or southeast Asian studies.
