Guardian ® /Guardian ® HP InstallationSTEP 1Remove allburrs fromthe hub boreand spindle.Thoroughlyclean theentire wheelcavity. Apply a thin layer of No. 2 sealant tothe O.D. of the spindle shoulder. Place theseal assembly on the spindle so the words“OIL BEARING SIDE” are exposed to the oil.WARNING: DO NOT INSTALL THE SEALINTO THE HUB BORE.STEP 2Using therecommendedSTEMCOUniversal AxleTool, drive theseal assemblyon until thetool bottoms against the shoulder. Make surethe ring is flush with the axle shoulder. Ensureseal fully contacts the wear ring flange. Wipeaway any excess sealant.STEP 3Dip the inner bearing in oil and place on thespindle. Note: The O.D. of the seal must becoated with a thin coat of lubricant.NOTE: When using grease, pre-pack theinner bearing before placement into the hub.STEP 4With the wheelmounted ona wheel dolly,carefully pushthe wheel ontothe spindleuntil it contactsthe seal. Dip the outer bearing in oil and placeit on the spindle. NOTE: When using grease,pre-pack the outer bearing before placementinto the hub. Tighten the inner spindle nuthand tight and remove the wheel dolly.STEP 5Tighten theinner nut to200 ft. lbs.Rotate thewheel severaltimes thenback offnut one fullturn. Makefinal bearing adjustment, according to TMCrecommended bearing adjustment procedure.Install the appropriate axle fastener.STEP 6Install the hub cap with a new gasket and fillthe cavity with lubricant to the proper level.On drive axles be sure the differential oil levelis high enough (manufacturer’s recommendedlevel) to ensure oil flow through the tube to thewheels. It is recommended to jack one sideup and then the other until flow starts. Makecertain the breather plug is clear.
