Standard/Grit Guard ® Seal InstallationHUB SEAL INSTALLATIONSTEP 1Remove all burrs and thoroughly clean thespindle. Apply a thin layer of No. 2 sealant tothe O.D. of the spindle shoulder. Place theaxle ring on the spindle.STEP 2Using therecommendedSTEMCOUniversal AxleTool, drive theaxle ring onuntil the toolbottoms against the spindle shoulder. Makecertain the axle ring is flush with the shoulder.Wipe away any excess sealant.STEP 3Remove all burrs from the hub bore andthoroughly clean the entire wheel cavity.STEP 4With the wheelin the horizontalposition, prelubethe innerbearing andplace it into thebearing cup.NOTE: When using grease, pre-pack theouter bearing before placement into the hub.STEP 5Apply a thinlayer of No. 2sealant to theO.D. of the sealand position theseal in the hub.Using the recommended STEMCO UniversalHub Tool, held in a vertical position, drive theseal into the seal bore until it is bottomed out.Check the clearance between the bearing coneand seal (at least 1/32nd is required).STEP 6With the wheelmounted on adolly, carefully alignthe bore with thespindle. Gently pushthe wheel assemblyonto the spindle tothe proper position.Pre-lube the outerbearing and push itinto the bearing cup.NOTE: When using grease, pre-pack theinner bearing before placement into the hub.STEP 7Assemble the inner nut and tighten it to200 ft. lbs. Rotate the wheel several timesthen back off nut one full turn. Make finalbearing adjustment, according to TMC recommendedbearing adjustment procedure.Install the appropriate axle fastener.STEP 8Install the hub cap with the new gasket andfill the cavity with lubricant to the proper level.On drive axles be sure the differential oil ishigh enough (manufacturer’s recommendedlevel) to ensure oil flow through the tube to thewheels. It is recommended to jack one side upand then the other until flow starts. Make certainthe breather plug is clear.
