Du Bois was born February 23, 1868 inGreat Barrington, Massachusetts, one year after theratification <strong>of</strong> the Fourteenth Ammendment to theU. S. Constitution. After graduating from Fisk Universityand then Harvard College, he attended theUniversity <strong>of</strong> Berlin, traveling extensively in Europe.Du Bois was the first African-American to receivea PhD. from Harvard University in 1896. He thentaught at Wilberforce Univesity in Ohio and later atthe University <strong>of</strong>Pennsylvania. He establishedthe Department<strong>of</strong> Sociology atAtlanta University,now known as ClarkAtlanta University.After publishingmany books and along career as teacherand activist, Du Boisdied on August 27,1963.W.
