One of the oldest states of existence known to humanity, marriage is atraditional state of be<strong>in</strong>g, unit<strong>in</strong>g one man <strong>and</strong> one woman to love, honor, cherish,<strong>and</strong> protect each other for the rest of their lives. In <strong>Victorian</strong> <strong>Engl<strong>and</strong></strong>, however,many men <strong>and</strong> women questioned traditional expectations concern<strong>in</strong>g marriage.Society's norms <strong>in</strong> Brita<strong>in</strong> dictated that marriage was the ultimate goal <strong>in</strong> then<strong>in</strong>eteenth century, <strong>and</strong>, accord<strong>in</strong>g to Barbara Weiss, "there has perhaps never beenan age (or a literature) as relentlessly pro marriage as the <strong>Victorian</strong> period" (67).However, many issues concern<strong>in</strong>g marriage disturbed some freer-th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<strong>Victorian</strong>s, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g novelist <strong>George</strong> Eliot. In her 1872 novel, Middlemarch, Eliotexam<strong>in</strong>es the lives of several characters <strong>in</strong> both courtship <strong>and</strong> marriagerelationships. Through these characters, Eliot shows how many people are bl<strong>in</strong>dedby their own fantasies about an idealized marriage, <strong>and</strong> these fantasies render themsorely unprepared for the realities of the marriage union. Eliot gives the readervarious perspectives on marriage through her characters, allow<strong>in</strong>g us to see thatalthough marriage was a contented state for many middle-class men <strong>and</strong> women, alarge number of people were consumed by fantasies concern<strong>in</strong>g marriage <strong>and</strong> laterfound the unrealistic expectations, <strong>in</strong>equities, <strong>and</strong> disillusionment <strong>in</strong> marriage to be<strong>in</strong>tolerable.


Historical <strong>and</strong> Social ContextWhen Eliot began writ<strong>in</strong>g Middlemarch <strong>in</strong> 1871, the evolv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Victorian</strong>attitudes about marriage were com<strong>in</strong>g to maturity, as evidenced <strong>in</strong> the literature ofthe period, <strong>and</strong> the social attitudes of the era were the greatest <strong>in</strong>fluence on Eliot'ssubject matter <strong>and</strong> characterization <strong>in</strong> the novel. Although Eliot was concerned withthese chang<strong>in</strong>g attitudes <strong>in</strong> the latter half of the n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century, she set her novel<strong>in</strong> 1832, at the time of the First Reform Bill <strong>and</strong> five years before the coronation ofQueen Victoria, By do<strong>in</strong>g so, Eliot shows a contrast between the conceptions aboutmarriage just prior to the <strong>Victorian</strong> age (<strong>in</strong> her novel's characters) <strong>and</strong> the attitudesabout marriage forty years later (<strong>in</strong> the people read<strong>in</strong>g her novel). Eliotdemonstrates that the unrealistic expectations <strong>and</strong> attitudes concern<strong>in</strong>g marriageexisted prior to the reign of Queen Victoria, cont<strong>in</strong>ued to be problematic after hercoronation, <strong>and</strong> began a more realistic evolution only <strong>in</strong> the latter half of then<strong>in</strong>eteenth century.Throughout the <strong>Victorian</strong> period, propriety was a dom<strong>in</strong>ant aspect of society,publicly exemplified by the queen herself. To re<strong>in</strong>force the st<strong>and</strong>ard of propriety,many writers produced a variety of conduct books to help <strong>Victorian</strong> womenconform to these st<strong>and</strong>ards. However, these conduct books often placed unrealisticexpectations on <strong>Victorian</strong> young women. For example, some books emphasized totalself-annihilation for married women, plac<strong>in</strong>g a great emphasis on the joys of selfsacrifice<strong>in</strong> order to make a man happy (Calder 82). Does this mean that women


were not to seek happ<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> marriage, but only self-sacrifice? Accord<strong>in</strong>g to manycritics, the answer is yes. Jenni Calder stated that the <strong>Victorian</strong> woman "anticipatedmarriage as a release <strong>in</strong>to happ<strong>in</strong>ess. It would give her existence a purpose, work<strong>in</strong>gfor others, help<strong>in</strong>g her husb<strong>and</strong>" (12). These conduct books further <strong>in</strong>dicated that itwas a wife's duty to transform her home <strong>in</strong>to a sacred shelter from the world, freefrom strife, worry, dissension, <strong>and</strong> s<strong>in</strong>. These <strong>in</strong>structions <strong>and</strong> recommendationsplaced high expectations on young women even before they entered marriage; aftermarriage, those young women were supposed to fulfill those expectations. Throughthe character of Dorothea Brooke, Eliot directly addresses many of these issuesadvocated through the conduct books <strong>and</strong> satirizes their effect on young womenenter<strong>in</strong>g marriage.The <strong>Victorian</strong> ideal of marriage itself placed the bulk of the moralresponsibility on the wife, as <strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>in</strong> the conduct books, m<strong>in</strong>ister's sermons,many popular poems, novels, <strong>and</strong> essays, <strong>and</strong> by the life of Queen Victoria herself.The wife was regarded as the moral guardian of the home, shield<strong>in</strong>g her husb<strong>and</strong><strong>and</strong> children from the wicked world beyond her <strong>in</strong>fluence. One example of thisbelief is seen <strong>in</strong> the highly popular poem by Coventry Patmore, "The Angel <strong>in</strong> theHouse," composed between the years of 1854 <strong>and</strong> 1862. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to manytwentieth century critics <strong>and</strong> fem<strong>in</strong>ists, this poem glorifies the self-sacrific<strong>in</strong>g wife <strong>in</strong>a sentimental, patroniz<strong>in</strong>g manner <strong>and</strong> reduces the value of a woman as an<strong>in</strong>dividual. Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Woolf criticized this poem "both for the sentimentality of its


ideal of woman <strong>and</strong> for the oppressive effect of this ideal on women's lives"(Abrams, et al 1723). Although the speaker <strong>in</strong> the poem does praise his wife,"woman is naturally passive to [him]....[H]e alternates between prais<strong>in</strong>g woman'ssuperiority to man <strong>and</strong> assert<strong>in</strong>g her absolute dom<strong>in</strong>ion by him" (Christ 149, 152).Even though the <strong>Victorian</strong> woman was considered to be morally superior to man, hewas superior to her <strong>in</strong> every other area of life. Her "angelic" superiority <strong>in</strong> no way<strong>in</strong>creased her value or rights as an <strong>in</strong>dividual, <strong>and</strong> Eliot expounds upon this po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong>Middlemarch .In reaction to Patmore's poem, Maria Deraismes, a French journalist<strong>in</strong> the n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century, stated, "Of all women's enemies, I tell you that the worstare those who <strong>in</strong>sist that woman is an angel. To say that woman is an angel is toimpose on her, <strong>in</strong> a sentimental <strong>and</strong> admir<strong>in</strong>g fashion, all duties, <strong>and</strong> to reserve foroneself all rights" (qtd. <strong>in</strong> Freedman <strong>and</strong> Hellerste<strong>in</strong> 140). But <strong>in</strong> the n<strong>in</strong>eteenthcentury, Patmore was praised for this poem by many <strong>Victorian</strong> men <strong>and</strong> womenwho agreed with this presentation of the ideal woman.Although marriage was considered by many to be a woman's ideal state ofbe<strong>in</strong>g, legal rights <strong>in</strong> marriage were a privilege reserved only for the <strong>Victorian</strong>husb<strong>and</strong>. Prior to the <strong>Victorian</strong> age, most people merely accepted these laws <strong>and</strong>traditions. However, some <strong>Victorian</strong>s— <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Eliot— questioned the long-heldsole legal rights of men <strong>in</strong> marriage, <strong>and</strong> this question<strong>in</strong>g appeared <strong>in</strong> novels, <strong>in</strong> thecourts, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> many other areas of <strong>Victorian</strong> life.


As stated previously, <strong>Victorian</strong> society, books, parents, <strong>and</strong> clergymen taughtthat marriage was a woman's providential purpose <strong>in</strong> life, but accord<strong>in</strong>g to the law,marriage marked the end of a woman's <strong>in</strong>dividuality. In the first half of then<strong>in</strong>eteenth century, English common law dictated that "a woman forfeited powerover herself <strong>and</strong> her property when she entered wedlock" (Holcombe 4). Therefore,all of her personal property, any money she might have had, <strong>and</strong> even the childrenshe bore belonged solely to her husb<strong>and</strong>. Not even <strong>in</strong> divorce or the husb<strong>and</strong>'s deathwas the wife guaranteed to receive the rights to any of her property or her children.When a husb<strong>and</strong> died, his will denoted how his estate <strong>and</strong> his children wouldbe taken care of. If he so chose, he may have willed custody of his children to abrother or a friend <strong>in</strong>stead of his wife, the children's mother. Many <strong>Victorian</strong> womenfound such laws to be repulsive <strong>and</strong> degrad<strong>in</strong>g. If a woman was truly the home'smoral guardian <strong>and</strong> the "angel <strong>in</strong> the house," then why was she denied custody ofher own children? In the 1830s, Carol<strong>in</strong>e Norton, a popular London poet <strong>and</strong>novelist, was <strong>in</strong>strumental <strong>in</strong> creat<strong>in</strong>g the Infants <strong>and</strong> Child Custody Act of 1839 <strong>in</strong>response to this <strong>in</strong>justice. Norton, enraged that her husb<strong>and</strong> had sent their threesons to an unknown dest<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>and</strong> refused to let her see them, developedpamphlets ask<strong>in</strong>g Parliament to grant mothers custody of children under the age ofseven <strong>and</strong> for the courts to decide the custody of older children (Hels<strong>in</strong>ger, Sheets,<strong>and</strong> Veeder 8-9). Norton said, "A woman may bear cheerfully the poverty whichanomalies <strong>in</strong> the laws of property may entail upon her;. ..but aga<strong>in</strong>st the <strong>in</strong>flicted


<strong>and</strong> unmerited loss of her children, she cannot bear up; she has not deserved thatblow" (qtd. <strong>in</strong> Hels<strong>in</strong>ger, Sheets, <strong>and</strong> Veeder 11). Submitt<strong>in</strong>g many of her pamphletsto Parliament under a male pseudonym Norton eventually reached a sympatheticaudience, <strong>and</strong> the bill was passed. Many <strong>Victorian</strong>s, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Harriet Mart<strong>in</strong>eau,called the Infants <strong>and</strong> Child Custody Act of 1839 "the first blow struck at theoppression of English legislation <strong>in</strong> relation to women" (qtd. <strong>in</strong> Hels<strong>in</strong>ger, Sheets,<strong>and</strong> Veeder 13). Although equal rights <strong>and</strong> responsibilities for both parents were notestablished <strong>in</strong> <strong>Engl<strong>and</strong></strong> until the Guardianship of Infants Act of 1925, Norton helpedto lay the foundation for changes <strong>in</strong> the law regard<strong>in</strong>g women's rights <strong>in</strong> marriage<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> custody of their own children.Just as a woman had no rights <strong>in</strong> the case of her husb<strong>and</strong>'s death, neither didshe have any rights <strong>in</strong> divorce. Divorce was rare <strong>in</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century <strong>Engl<strong>and</strong></strong>, <strong>and</strong>prior to 1857, a true, legal divorce could be granted only by a private act ofParliament (Hels<strong>in</strong>ger, Sheets, <strong>and</strong> Veeder 23). Because of the expense <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong>such an undertak<strong>in</strong>g, divorce was an option only for the upper-middle <strong>and</strong> upperclasses of <strong>Victorian</strong> society. Even then, only the husb<strong>and</strong> could <strong>in</strong>itiate a divorce,<strong>and</strong> to legally obta<strong>in</strong> the divorce, he was required to prove that his wife hadcommitted adultery, thereby violat<strong>in</strong>g their marriage. However, the wife was notallowed to appear or even to defend herself <strong>in</strong> the divorce court. If the husb<strong>and</strong> weregranted a divorce on the grounds of adultery (whether his wife was guilty or not),he reta<strong>in</strong>ed legal possession of both his wife's property <strong>and</strong> their children


8(Hels<strong>in</strong>ger, Sheets, <strong>and</strong> Veeder 23). Not even the Infants <strong>and</strong> Child Custody Act of1839 applied <strong>in</strong> the case of divorce. If a husb<strong>and</strong> sought to divorce his wife <strong>and</strong>could somehow prove (or fabricate proof) that she had committed adultery, then thecourt dictated that she was obviously <strong>in</strong> no moral state to care for her children.These divorce laws did not change until the pass<strong>in</strong>g of the Divorce Act of1857. Under this law, "a woman who obta<strong>in</strong>ed either a judicial separation or adivorce was to have all the rights of an unmarried woman with respect to property"(Holcombe 12). This was the first time <strong>in</strong> English history that married women weregranted control of their property <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> cases. However, this law applied only ifthe husb<strong>and</strong> ab<strong>and</strong>oned the wife, not vice versa. Still, the passage of this act was aconsiderable achievement <strong>in</strong> married women's legal rights, open<strong>in</strong>g doors forfurther advancement <strong>in</strong> the future.Inside marriage, women did not obta<strong>in</strong> legal rights to their own propertyuntil the Married Women's Property Act of 1870, which was passed at the time Eliotbegan writ<strong>in</strong>g Middlemarch .Under this law, married women were granted rights totheir "separate property," which fell roughly <strong>in</strong>to three categories: "the earn<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong>property they acquired by their own work after the passage of the Act; money<strong>in</strong>vested <strong>in</strong> several specific ways. ..<strong>and</strong> with qualifications, property com<strong>in</strong>g to themfrom the estates of persons deceased" (Holcombe 20). Although several wr<strong>in</strong>klesrema<strong>in</strong>ed to be ironed out concern<strong>in</strong>g this new law, it was a tremendousachievement for married women's property rights <strong>in</strong> the n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century.


While married women suffered from lack of laws to protect them as<strong>in</strong>dividuals, unmarried women also suffered under the stra<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>Victorian</strong> society.In an age that idealized marriage <strong>and</strong> regarded it as a woman's purpose <strong>in</strong> life, theconcern over sp<strong>in</strong>sters worried many <strong>Victorian</strong>s. Women were under great pressureto marry due to their "sexual <strong>and</strong> economic vulnerability, their desire forrespectability <strong>and</strong> security, <strong>and</strong> their long<strong>in</strong>g (<strong>in</strong> many cases) for children comb<strong>in</strong>edwith the grow<strong>in</strong>g ideal of romantic love" (Freedman <strong>and</strong> Hellerste<strong>in</strong> 121).Becauseof these pressures, many women feared reject<strong>in</strong>g a marriage proposal becausemarriage was considered such a necessary component of their lives. However, <strong>in</strong>mid-n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century <strong>Engl<strong>and</strong></strong>, there were nearly half a million more women thanmen, <strong>and</strong> approximately 12 to 15 percent of all British women never married(Freedman <strong>and</strong> Hellerste<strong>in</strong> 121). The question lurk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> many m<strong>in</strong>ds was how theseunmarried women fit <strong>in</strong> a society that <strong>in</strong> many ways revolved around marriage, <strong>and</strong>Eliot addresses the sp<strong>in</strong>ster issue <strong>in</strong> Middlemarch through Mary Garth, a likelyc<strong>and</strong>idate for sp<strong>in</strong>sterhood.Writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the mid-n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century, Frances Power Cobbe exam<strong>in</strong>es theconcern over unmarried women thoroughly <strong>in</strong> her essay, "What Shall We Do withOur Old Maids?" In this essay, Cobbe presents two possible solutions to the sp<strong>in</strong>sterproblem:


101 st , Wemust frankly accept this new state of th<strong>in</strong>gs [sp<strong>in</strong>sterhood], <strong>and</strong>educate women <strong>and</strong> modify trade <strong>in</strong> accordance therewith, so as to make thecondition of celibacy as little <strong>in</strong>jurious as possible; or —2 nd , Wemust set ourselves vigorously to stop the current which is lead<strong>in</strong>gmen <strong>and</strong> women away from the natural order of Providence. We must donoth<strong>in</strong>g whatever to render celibacy easy or attractive; <strong>and</strong> we must make theutmost efforts to promote marriage by emigration of women to the colonies,<strong>and</strong> all other means <strong>in</strong> our power. (237)Cobbe heavily criticizes this second option, although Brita<strong>in</strong> was deport<strong>in</strong>g largenumbers of s<strong>in</strong>gle women as brides to the colonies. Because marriage was presentedas the only purpose for a woman's life, Cobbe felt that the lack of choices causedmarriage to become "a matter of cold, philosophic choice" (238). Cobbe does notbelieve that every young woman should be married by the age of twenty, as middleclasssociety dictated. Instead, Cobbe presents the reader with more options for awoman's life, such as education <strong>and</strong> employment, as she discusses the first possiblesolution to the sp<strong>in</strong>ster problem. Cobbe backs up her argument <strong>in</strong> favor of thissolution by stat<strong>in</strong>g, "Only a woman who has someth<strong>in</strong>g else than mak<strong>in</strong>g love to do<strong>and</strong> to th<strong>in</strong>k of will love really <strong>and</strong> deeply" (241).Cobbe not only advocates thatunmarried women be given choices beyond marriage, but she also believes that ifthey did embark on other paths <strong>and</strong> chose to marry later <strong>in</strong> life, then their marriages


11would only be richer <strong>and</strong> greater because they were able to explore life as<strong>in</strong>dividuals before enter<strong>in</strong>g marriage.Like Cobbe, Dr. <strong>George</strong> Drysdale, a physician practic<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh <strong>in</strong> thelatter half of the n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century, also exam<strong>in</strong>ed the sp<strong>in</strong>ster question. Possess<strong>in</strong>gradical views at the time, Drysdale believed that monogamous wedlock wasdestructive to the human psyche, stat<strong>in</strong>g, "The fear of rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g an old maid, or thewish to obta<strong>in</strong> the social advantages <strong>and</strong> protection of marriage, is the real motivewhich <strong>in</strong>fluences the woman [to marry]. Such marriages are <strong>in</strong> reality cases oflegalised prostitution" (Hels<strong>in</strong>ger, Sheets, <strong>and</strong> Veeder 70). Drysdale added that theexpectations for all women to be married <strong>and</strong> the fear of sp<strong>in</strong>sterhood caused manybitter, unhappy, <strong>and</strong> unnecessary marriages <strong>in</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth-century Brita<strong>in</strong>. LikeCobbe, Drysdale favors the option for a woman to have the ability to seek out herown path <strong>in</strong> life before committ<strong>in</strong>g herself <strong>in</strong> marriage.In the 1890s, many <strong>Victorian</strong> writers became more vocal concern<strong>in</strong>g thechang<strong>in</strong>g attitudes about marriage. Although the marriage relationship wasquestioned <strong>in</strong> the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the <strong>Victorian</strong> period by many <strong>in</strong>dividuals, such asCarol<strong>in</strong>e Norton <strong>and</strong> Harriet Mart<strong>in</strong>eau, these questions turned <strong>in</strong>to forcefularguments by the last decade of the n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century. In fact, the essays of MarieCorelli <strong>and</strong> Mona Alison Caird, written <strong>in</strong> the wan<strong>in</strong>g years of the <strong>Victorian</strong> era,<strong>in</strong>dicate that the marriage issue was never fully resolved. For example, Corelliadvocated marriage as a woman's providential purpose <strong>in</strong> life, but she argued that


12<strong>Victorian</strong> middle-class marriages had been reduced to bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> barga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Inher 1898 essay, "The Modern <strong>Marriage</strong> Market," Corelli stated, "Mothers teach theirdaughters to marry for a 'suitable establishment': fathers, rendered desperate as towhat they are to do with their sons <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g struggle for life. . .say, 'Look outfor a woman with money'" (30). Corelli followed the traditional stra<strong>in</strong> of society'sconcept of marriage, but she felt that the affection <strong>and</strong> sanctity of marriage had beencorrupted. Although Corelli argued for the romantic ideal of marriage, she saw thatsuch an ideal was impossible to atta<strong>in</strong> when the marriage "contract" was just that<strong>and</strong> noth<strong>in</strong>g more. Correlli's beliefs <strong>and</strong> the demise of the romantic ideal <strong>in</strong> marriageare also apparent <strong>in</strong> many <strong>Victorian</strong> novels, notably <strong>in</strong> those of Charlotte Bronte <strong>and</strong><strong>George</strong> Eliot.Unlike Corelli, who believed that marriage was an acceptable goal for awoman, <strong>Victorian</strong> writer Mona Alison Caird felt that marriage was a horrible stateof existence for most women because they lost their <strong>in</strong>dividuality. Also writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>the 1890s, Caird argued, "Dependence, <strong>in</strong> short, is the curse of our marriages, of ourhomes, <strong>and</strong> of our children, who are born of women who are not free" (632). Cairdfelt that the "holy estate" of marriage was a mockery because of its "atrocious<strong>in</strong>justices" (635). These <strong>in</strong>justices, accord<strong>in</strong>g to Caird, rendered a woman completelyhelpless <strong>in</strong> society because she had no power to th<strong>in</strong>k, act, or become anyth<strong>in</strong>g otherthan a man's wife. It is obvious that a <strong>Victorian</strong> woman found her identity <strong>in</strong>marriage, but many emerg<strong>in</strong>g fem<strong>in</strong>ists, like Caird, rejected this dependent identity.


13With this historical context <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, <strong>George</strong> Eliot's Middlemarch provides an<strong>in</strong>timate look <strong>in</strong>to several marriages <strong>in</strong> a rural British community. Eliot wiselyexam<strong>in</strong>es the lives of people from different social classes <strong>and</strong> walks of life, allow<strong>in</strong>gthe reader to see both the common problems <strong>and</strong> common virtues that exist <strong>in</strong> thenovel's marriages. Through the lives of the characters, Eliot discusses several issuesconcern<strong>in</strong>g marriage, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the characters' expectations <strong>and</strong> fantasiesconcern<strong>in</strong>g wedlock, the concept of the "angelic," self-sacrific<strong>in</strong>g woman, legalrights <strong>in</strong> marriage, <strong>and</strong> communication (or lack of it) between spouses. The successor failure of a Middlemarch marriage depends not only on the way the charactersview their spouses, but also on how the characters view themselves with<strong>in</strong> marriage.Most of the marriages that Eliot presents fail rather than succeed, <strong>and</strong> this is ironic <strong>in</strong>a period when marriage was usually the resolution to every social ill <strong>in</strong> a novel(Weiss 67). However, Eliot's "portraits of the Lydgate <strong>and</strong> Casaubon marriagesmake clear how the absence of any real identity of <strong>in</strong>terests between husb<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong>wife contributes <strong>in</strong> a major way to the failures of those marriages" (Graver 56).Although <strong>Victorian</strong> society dictated that marriage was the social epitome fora man <strong>and</strong> a woman, the moral, social, <strong>and</strong> legal bases of marriage were questionedby many <strong>Victorian</strong>s, evidenced through such laws as the Matrimonial Causes Act of1857, the Divorce Act of 1857, <strong>and</strong> the Married Women's Property Act of 1870.Published serially <strong>in</strong> 1871 <strong>and</strong> 1872, Middlemarch reflects the subtly chang<strong>in</strong>g<strong>Victorian</strong> concept of marriage. Instead of end<strong>in</strong>g her novel with marriage as a


14resolution, Eliot beg<strong>in</strong>s her novel with several marriages <strong>and</strong> follows the charactersthrough their own questions about the state of matrimony.Dorothea Brooke <strong>and</strong> Edward CasaubonAs stated earlier, the life of a <strong>Victorian</strong> young woman centered onpreparation for marriage, <strong>and</strong> the life of Dorothea Brooke <strong>in</strong> Middlemarch is nodifferent. Eliot clearly shows that Dorothea's concept of marriage is greatly<strong>in</strong>fluenced by her religious, Puritanical beliefs. Despite her wealth <strong>and</strong> her thirst forknowledge, Dorothea "reta<strong>in</strong>ed very childlike ideas about marriage" (Eliot 11). Inthe first chapters of the novel, Eliot does not mention that Dorothea longs forromance or love <strong>in</strong> a marriage; Dorothea imag<strong>in</strong>es only that a "really delightfulmarriage must be that where your husb<strong>and</strong> was a sort of father" (Eliot 11) <strong>and</strong> "onethat would deliver her from her girlish subjection to her own ignorance, <strong>and</strong> giveher the freedom of voluntary submission to a guide who would take her along thegr<strong>and</strong>est path" (Eliot 31). These are Dorothea's goals <strong>and</strong> expectations for marriage,<strong>and</strong> when she meets Edward Casaubon, she becomes wrapped up <strong>in</strong> a fantasy aboutCasaubon be<strong>in</strong>g "the ideal sort of man for a husb<strong>and</strong>, a k<strong>in</strong>d of cross between afather <strong>and</strong> the poet, Milton, to whom she could be both pupil <strong>and</strong> student" (Ermarth113). S<strong>and</strong>ra Gilbert <strong>and</strong> Susan Gubar see this fantasy as a way <strong>in</strong> which "Dorotheawill be trapped <strong>in</strong> sterile submission to male force" (504). Dorothea is a selflessperson, evidenced through her great desire to help the poor <strong>and</strong> assist Casaubon


15with his Key to all Mythologies, but her concept of voluntary self-sacrifice isillusory, ultimately caus<strong>in</strong>g her to resent her husb<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> become bitter <strong>in</strong> hermarriage to Casaubon.Dorothea's fantasy emerges <strong>in</strong> the open<strong>in</strong>g pages of Eliot's novel. Even <strong>in</strong> theprelude, Eliot mentions a "Sa<strong>in</strong>t Theresa, foundress of noth<strong>in</strong>g, whose lov<strong>in</strong>g heartbeats<strong>and</strong> sobs after an unatta<strong>in</strong>ed goodness tremble off <strong>and</strong> are dispersed amongh<strong>in</strong>drances, <strong>in</strong>stead of center<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> some long-recognizable deed" (4). This Sa<strong>in</strong>tTheresa syndrome foreshadows the woman that Dorothea becomes <strong>in</strong> the novel <strong>and</strong>the lack of fulfillment that she encounters as the wife of Casaubon. AlthoughDorothea's compulsive desires of self-sacrifice stem from noble <strong>in</strong>tentions, shebecomes obsessed with the attitude of selflessness. Through Dorothea's character,Eliot demonstrates how extreme self-sacrifice can be just as destructive as extremeselfishness. However, Dorothea rema<strong>in</strong>s true to her mission of self-sacrifice until sheis later forced to question her motives as her marriage to Casaubon progresses <strong>and</strong>she beg<strong>in</strong>s to fall <strong>in</strong> love with Will Ladislaw.The fantasies that consume Dorothea's m<strong>in</strong>d stem largely from the emotional<strong>and</strong> physical conditions of her upbr<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g. Eliot states that Dorothea's ancestors,"though not exactly aristocratic, were unquestionably 'good'" (7), but her parentsdied when she was about twelve years old (8). This lack of parentage <strong>in</strong> heradolescence caused Dorothea to turn to Christianity for guidance, <strong>and</strong> as she grewolder, "her m<strong>in</strong>d was theoretic, <strong>and</strong> yearned by its nature after some lofty


17had lived most of his life alone, Casaubon is quite ignorant about young women <strong>and</strong>about marriage itself. Because he has been isolated work<strong>in</strong>g on his Key to allMythologies, "he felt the disadvantage of lonel<strong>in</strong>ess, the need for that cheerfulcompanionship with which the presence of youth can lighten or vary the serioustoils of maturity" (Eliot 28). Casaubon's fantasy develops only after he meetsDorothea <strong>and</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>s to court her. His lack of knowledge <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g aboutwomen causes him to create an illusory world that marriage will supposedly br<strong>in</strong>gto his life. He fantasizes about Dorothea as well, but not concern<strong>in</strong>g her sexuality orardour; <strong>in</strong>stead, he focuses on her will<strong>in</strong>gness to help him with his Key to allMythologies <strong>and</strong> her submission to his superiority. For example, dur<strong>in</strong>g theircourtship, "he observed with pleasure that Miss Brooke showed an ardentsubmissive affection which promised to fulfil his most agreeable previsions ofmarriage" (Eliot 69). Impressed by the character traits he saw <strong>in</strong> Dorothea, Casauboneagerly proposes to her, <strong>and</strong> "when Dorothea accepted him with effusion, that wasonly natural; <strong>and</strong> Mr. Casaubon believed that his happ<strong>in</strong>ess was go<strong>in</strong>g to beg<strong>in</strong>"(Eliot 311). Therefore, when Casaubon's fantasies about his marriage <strong>and</strong> Dorothea'swifely nature do not reach his expectations, he too becomes withdrawn, resentful,<strong>and</strong> bitter about his marriage to Dorothea.Because Dorothea <strong>and</strong> Casaubon both br<strong>in</strong>g their <strong>in</strong>dividual fantasies <strong>and</strong>expectations <strong>in</strong>to their marriage union, their relationship suffers when theseexpectations are not fulfilled to make a successful marriage union. In their courtship,


18the prospective marriage appears idyllic, but on their honeymoon to Rome,disillusionment about the marriage sets <strong>in</strong> when the couple has the first of manyclashes of will. Both Dorothea <strong>and</strong> Casaubon desire "the idealized vision of theother" (Introduction 11) that was created <strong>in</strong> their own m<strong>in</strong>ds, but it quickly appearsthat this vision is impossible. The characters are wrapped up <strong>and</strong> essentially isolated<strong>in</strong> their own perceptions about what marriage should be, <strong>and</strong> neither effectivelycommunicates his or her expectations, disillusionment, or resentment about themarriage to one another. For example, <strong>in</strong> Rome, Casaubon frequently leavesDorothea alone so that he can pursue research on his Key to all Mythologies, thatalone be<strong>in</strong>g strange behavior for a man on his honeymoon. Sad <strong>and</strong> lonely, Dorotheacries, know<strong>in</strong>g "her view of Mr. Casaubon <strong>and</strong> her wifely relation, now that she wasmarried to him, was gradually chang<strong>in</strong>g with the secret motion of a watch-h<strong>and</strong>from what it had been <strong>in</strong> her maiden dream" (Eliot 217). Here Dorothea's process ofdisillusionment beg<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> it only escalates as her marriage progresses. She hadexpected to discover "large vistas <strong>and</strong> wide fresh air which she had dreamed off<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> her husb<strong>and</strong>'s m<strong>in</strong>d," but <strong>in</strong>stead she found "anterooms <strong>and</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gpassages which seemed to lead nowhither" (Eliot 218). Eliot even comparesmatrimony to an enclosed bas<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>stead of the common metaphor of a sea,emphasiz<strong>in</strong>g Dorothea's <strong>and</strong> Casaubon's feel<strong>in</strong>gs of confusion <strong>and</strong> conf<strong>in</strong>ement <strong>in</strong>the early days of marriage.


19Casaubon's disillusionment also beg<strong>in</strong>s on the honeymoon, <strong>and</strong>, likeDorothea, he does not share his feel<strong>in</strong>gs of disappo<strong>in</strong>tment. Eliot expla<strong>in</strong>s thatCasaubon "had not found marriage a rapturous state" (222); <strong>in</strong>stead, he viewed theunion to be "more of a subjection that he had been able to imag<strong>in</strong>e, s<strong>in</strong>ce thischarm<strong>in</strong>g young bride not only obliged him to much consideration on herbehalf. ..but turned out to be capable of agitat<strong>in</strong>g him cruelly just where he mostneeded sooth<strong>in</strong>g" (225). Despite his disappo<strong>in</strong>tment <strong>and</strong> confusion, Casauboncannot br<strong>in</strong>g himself to discuss his feel<strong>in</strong>gs with Dorothea. Bege K. Bowers statesthat "never <strong>in</strong> the course of the marriage is he able to let down his carefullyconstructed persona, 'his manners/ <strong>and</strong> meet Dorothea's or his own deepest feel<strong>in</strong>gshead-on" (110). While still <strong>in</strong> Rome, Dorothea beg<strong>in</strong>s to sense this attitude <strong>in</strong> herhusb<strong>and</strong>, although Casaubon himself never communicated such feel<strong>in</strong>gs to her <strong>in</strong>words. After she senses this, Dorothea becomes acutely aware of the two separate,dist<strong>in</strong>ct selves that comprise a marriage union; she sees that Casaubon, like herself,"had an equivalent centre of self" (Eliot 235), <strong>and</strong> she realizes that those two selveswith their own separate fantasies might never succeed <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g marriage thecontented state that they had expected.Instead of realiz<strong>in</strong>g that their lack of communication harmed their marriage,Dorothea <strong>and</strong> Casaubon return to Middlemarch more withdrawn about theirrelationship. In fact, both beg<strong>in</strong> to develop new fantasies about the other. Forexample, at the conclusion of the honeymoon, Dorothea realizes "there might be a


20sad consciousness <strong>in</strong> his life which made as great a need on his side as on her own";therefore, she unfl<strong>in</strong>ch<strong>in</strong>gly decides to "devote herself to Mr. Casaubon, <strong>and</strong> becomewise <strong>and</strong> strong <strong>in</strong> his strength <strong>and</strong> wisdom" (Eliot 235). She believes that thisdecision on her part may help to destroy the wall that is slowly build<strong>in</strong>g betweenthem. However, Casaubon "f<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>in</strong> Dorothea's 'self-sacrific<strong>in</strong>g affection' not thecompletion of his existence but further cause for alienation" (Graver 60). Casaubonrejects Dorothea's devotion because he assumes that her actions stem from feel<strong>in</strong>gsof pity for him. He cannot tolerate such a possibility, <strong>and</strong> he pushes Dorothea'scompanionship even farther away from him. Instead, Casaubon realizes that"marriage, like religion <strong>and</strong> erudition, nay, like authorship itself, was fated tobecome an outward requirement" (Eliot 313). Both focus on that outwardrequirement to "keep up appearances," even though both Dorothea <strong>and</strong> Casaubon<strong>in</strong>wardly resent one another nearly to the po<strong>in</strong>t of hatred.Despite her grow<strong>in</strong>g resentment of Casaubon, Dorothea cannot ignore thepresence of Will Ladislaw <strong>in</strong> her life. He is the one person <strong>in</strong> the novel who forcesDorothea to reexam<strong>in</strong>e her motives for self-sacrifice. From the time she first meetsLadislaw <strong>in</strong> Rome, Dorothea realizes that "she had never before seen any one whoseemed so quick <strong>and</strong> pliable, so likely to underst<strong>and</strong> everyth<strong>in</strong>g" (Eliot 233).Develop<strong>in</strong>g a friendship with Ladislaw that she lacks with her husb<strong>and</strong>, Dorotheasoon discovers her attraction to him, a man who possesses a personality <strong>and</strong>characteristics completely opposite of her former ideals <strong>in</strong> a man. He has no money,


21no high <strong>in</strong>tellect, no lofty ideals, <strong>and</strong> no religious zeal. However, "Will is Eliot'sradically anti-patriarchal attempt to create an image of mascul<strong>in</strong>ity attractive towomen" (Gilbert <strong>and</strong> Gubar 528). Only through Ladislaw does Dorothea eventuallysee the futility of her self-sacrific<strong>in</strong>g motives <strong>and</strong>, after Casaubon's death, thepossibility of a happy <strong>and</strong> content marriage relationship.Rosamond V<strong>in</strong>cy <strong>and</strong> Teritus LydgateRosamond <strong>and</strong> Lydgate are also trapped with<strong>in</strong> their own fantasies about themarriage relationship, but they appear to be even more deluded than Dorothea <strong>and</strong>Casaubon. While on her honeymoon, Dorothea realizes that she has been trapped <strong>in</strong>an illusory concept of marriage <strong>and</strong> recognizes that she must th<strong>in</strong>k differently abouther marriage, but Rosamond cl<strong>in</strong>gs to her fantasies <strong>and</strong> refuses to accept herdisillusionment. Gilbert <strong>and</strong> Gubar note that "Dorothea <strong>and</strong> Rosamond can onlyexpress their dissatisfaction with prov<strong>in</strong>cial life by choos<strong>in</strong>g suitors who seem to bepossible means of escap<strong>in</strong>g conf<strong>in</strong>ement <strong>and</strong> ennui," but for both women "marriageis soon associated with feel<strong>in</strong>gs of disappo<strong>in</strong>tment" (515). Like Dorothea, Rosamondhad lofty ideals about a future marriage, but Rosamond's goals focused solely onhow the union would help to raise her social status <strong>and</strong> fulfill her romantic dreamsthat she acquired while attend<strong>in</strong>g a f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g school for girls.The education that Rosamond received at this f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g school plays asignificant role <strong>in</strong> both the woman Rosamond becomes <strong>and</strong> the problems with<strong>in</strong> her


22marriage to Lydgate. In this environment, Rosamond learned the art of coquetry <strong>and</strong>catch<strong>in</strong>g a proper husb<strong>and</strong> (a "pr<strong>in</strong>ce charm<strong>in</strong>g"). This education renders her quiteunprepared for the responsibilities <strong>in</strong> a marriage relationship. Through hercharacterization of Rosamond, Eliot <strong>in</strong>dicates that such education for girls causedmany of the problems <strong>in</strong> <strong>Victorian</strong> marriages because young women like Rosamondentered marriage expect<strong>in</strong>g a fairy-tale type relationship. However, even afterRosamond weds Lydgate, she is still consumed by "the possibility of <strong>in</strong>def<strong>in</strong>iteconquests" (Eliot 480). Although she holds marriage on a pedestal, Rosamond neverwants to be the submissive wife; she wants to control the men <strong>in</strong> her life. She seesherself "mak<strong>in</strong>g captives from the throne of marriage with a husb<strong>and</strong> as crownpr<strong>in</strong>ceby [her] side — himself <strong>in</strong> fact a subject— while the captives look up foreverhopeless" (Eliot 485). As Rosamond enterta<strong>in</strong>s these fantasies of romance, shequickly becomes <strong>in</strong>fatuated with Ladislaw, a frequent guest <strong>in</strong> the Lydgate home.Eliot clearly shows this side of Rosamond's character to emphasize the negativeeffects of her education, but, unfortunately, young men like Lydgate werecompletely ignorant of such conceptions.Rosamond beg<strong>in</strong>s weav<strong>in</strong>g fantasies about a marriage to Lydgate when hearrives <strong>in</strong> Middlemarch. She does not wish to marry a Middlemarch man because"she was tired of the faces <strong>and</strong> figures she had always been used to" (Eliot 106), <strong>and</strong>"she might have been happier if she had not been the daughter of a Middlemarchmanufacturer" (Eliot 111). Therefore, a well-to-do stranger <strong>in</strong> the community was


23necessary to fit <strong>in</strong>to Rosamond's romance. When she meets Lydgate, "Rosamondcould not doubt that this was the great epoch of her life. She judged of her ownsymptoms as those of awaken<strong>in</strong>g love, <strong>and</strong> she held it still more natural that Mr.Lydgate should have fallen <strong>in</strong> love at the first sight of her" (Eliot 130). She feels thatLydgate correctly corresponds to her ideal husb<strong>and</strong> because he is foreign toMiddlemarch, carries an air of dist<strong>in</strong>ction congruous with good family, <strong>and</strong>possesses "connexions which offered vistas of that middle-class heaven, rank" (Eliot130). However, unlike Dorothea's fantasies, which were largely a product of herreligious beliefs <strong>and</strong> her lack of a father, Rosamond's fantasies stem from hereducation at the f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g school. These n<strong>in</strong>eteenth-century schools taught youngwomen that the only way to improve themselves was to marry above their socialstation <strong>in</strong> life, <strong>and</strong> Rosamond <strong>in</strong>tends to do so. She has enjoyed a pampered life <strong>in</strong>her parents' home, but she desires that dist<strong>in</strong>ction given to families of "good birth."When her fantasy simply does not come true <strong>in</strong> a marriage to Lydgate, who wasessentially ostracized from his "good" family when he became a doctor, Rosamondreacts to the situation by struggl<strong>in</strong>g to repress her resentment of him whilesearch<strong>in</strong>g for new fantasies of fulfillment.Lydgate also has his own fantasies about marriage, even prior to meet<strong>in</strong>gRosamond. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Eliot, Lydgate dreamed of a marriage <strong>in</strong> which "his wifewould have that fem<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>e radiance. . .that sort of beauty which by its very naturewas virtuous, be<strong>in</strong>g moulded only for pure <strong>and</strong> delicate joys" (183). When he meets


24Rosamond, he said of her, "She is grace itself; she is perfectly lovely <strong>and</strong>accomplished. That is what a woman ought to be: she ought to produce the effect ofexquisite music" (Eliot 103). Lydgate's perception of what "a woman ought to be"renders him sorely unprepared for his marriage to Rosamond. Dur<strong>in</strong>g theircourtship, Eliot's narrator exclaims, "Poor Lydgate! Poor Rosamond! Each lived <strong>in</strong> aworld <strong>in</strong> which the other knew noth<strong>in</strong>g" (185).Unlike Casaubon, however, who entered marriage completely bl<strong>in</strong>d <strong>and</strong>ignorant concern<strong>in</strong>g a woman's needs <strong>and</strong> perceptions, Lydgate has some priorexperience with a woman's feel<strong>in</strong>gs about marriage through his <strong>in</strong>fatuation withMadame Laure. Lydgate's experience with this actress, "the first to whom he hadgiven his young adoration" (Eliot 171), causes him to realize that some women donot feel comfortable <strong>in</strong> the marriage relationship, or, as Laure said, "I do not likehusb<strong>and</strong>s" (Eliot 171). After Lydgate becomes aware of Laure's shock<strong>in</strong>g revelationthat she purposefully killed her husb<strong>and</strong>, he resolves to "take a strictly scientificview of woman, enterta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g no expectations but such as were justified beforeh<strong>and</strong>"(Eliot 171). Therefore, when Lydgate meets Rosamond, impressed by her charms,talents, <strong>and</strong> beauty, he conv<strong>in</strong>ces himself that his expectations concern<strong>in</strong>g her arecompletely justified, result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his own fantasy about Rosamond be<strong>in</strong>g everyth<strong>in</strong>g"a woman ought to be." Although at first Lydgate states to various Middlemarchcitizens that he has no plans to marry, he soon disregards that statement when he is"completely mastered by the outrush of tenderness at the sudden belief that this


25sweet young creature depended on him for her joy" (Eliot 336). Karen Chaseobserves that Lydgate's sudden proposal of marriage to Rosamond bears theprecedent of his earlier passion for Laure (140). With both women, Lydgate is caughtup <strong>in</strong> his own fantasy about romance as "an idea had thrilled through the recesseswith<strong>in</strong> him which had a miraculous effect <strong>in</strong> rais<strong>in</strong>g the power of passionate love"(Eliot 335). Lydgate falls <strong>in</strong> love because of his own fantasy about what therelationship "ought to be." Engulfed by his idealized passion for Rosamond whenhe proposes marriage, Lydgate forgets the earlier experience with Laure <strong>and</strong> hisvow to take "a strictly scientific view of woman." However, after Lydgate <strong>and</strong>Rosamond are wed, he remembers Laure's words <strong>and</strong> realizes that he has onlydeceived himself by ignor<strong>in</strong>g the warn<strong>in</strong>g.Both Lydgate <strong>and</strong> Rosamond enter marriage like Dorothea <strong>and</strong> Casaubon,believ<strong>in</strong>g that their <strong>in</strong>dividual fantasies of perfection <strong>and</strong> romance will be realized.However, "no sooner do Lydgate <strong>and</strong> Rosamond appear as husb<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> wife thanthey beg<strong>in</strong> to exhibit those disabilities endemic to the roles they unth<strong>in</strong>kably play"(Graver 57). From the <strong>in</strong>ception of their marriage, Eliot <strong>in</strong>dicates that it is dest<strong>in</strong>ed tofail, <strong>and</strong> both spouses contribute equally to the marriage's demise.When Rosamond realizes that she will not ga<strong>in</strong> the social prestige <strong>and</strong>romantic haven that she desires <strong>in</strong> her marriage to Lydgate, she decides to use herown methods <strong>and</strong> deterrn<strong>in</strong>ation to seek those avenues for herself. Even though sheknows that they are rapidly becom<strong>in</strong>g swallowed <strong>in</strong> debts they cannot pay back,


26Rosamond persists <strong>in</strong> believ<strong>in</strong>g that she can always have her way <strong>in</strong> everyth<strong>in</strong>g, for"what she liked to do was to her the right th<strong>in</strong>g" (Eliot 648). When Lydgate tries toexpla<strong>in</strong> their f<strong>in</strong>ancial difficulties, Rosamond becomes bitter aga<strong>in</strong>st him, feel<strong>in</strong>g thathe has betrayed her <strong>and</strong> presented himself falsely to her before their marriage.Indeed, Eliot states that "if she had known how Lydgate would have behaved, shewould never have married him" (661). Lydgate attempts to lead his household <strong>and</strong>his wife's expensive tastes back to a more affordable level, but "when he givesorders, Rosamond calmly counterm<strong>and</strong>s them, go<strong>in</strong>g beh<strong>in</strong>d his back time <strong>and</strong>aga<strong>in</strong> with a serene confidence that she underst<strong>and</strong>s th<strong>in</strong>gs better, <strong>and</strong> that th<strong>in</strong>gsshould be ordered as she likes" (Ermarth 118). Rosamond's illusory conceptconcern<strong>in</strong>g their f<strong>in</strong>ancial state <strong>and</strong> her own perceptions about "the right th<strong>in</strong>g"cause new upheavals <strong>in</strong> their marriage; subsequently, both Lydgate <strong>and</strong> Rosamondpassionately regret their decision to marry.At the po<strong>in</strong>t of f<strong>in</strong>ancial difficulty, Lydgate also realizes that his marriage toRosamond will not meet his expectations <strong>and</strong> desires. Shortly <strong>in</strong>to their marriage,Lydgate sees "how far he had traveled from his own dreaml<strong>and</strong>, <strong>in</strong> whichRosamond V<strong>in</strong>cy appeared to be that perfect piece of womanhood" (Eliot 646). WhatLydgate had envisioned to be a perfect marriage with a beautiful, talented youngwoman soon turns <strong>in</strong>to a frustrat<strong>in</strong>g nightmare for him. He even beg<strong>in</strong>s to compareRosamond to Laure, "who had that same calm way of violat<strong>in</strong>g his most basicassumptions about what would or could be reasonable" (Ermarth 118). 27beg<strong>in</strong>s to assume that all women <strong>in</strong>wardly feel like Laure: "'Would site [Rosamond]kill me because I wearied her?' <strong>and</strong> then, 'It is the way with all women'" (Eliot 656).Lydgate sees Rosamond <strong>and</strong> the marriage itself as a burden, <strong>and</strong>, unlike Rosamondwho cont<strong>in</strong>ually crafts new dreams <strong>and</strong> fantasies to escape their disappo<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>greality, Lydgate becomes mired <strong>in</strong> disillusionment <strong>and</strong> misery. He does not learnfrom his mistakes <strong>and</strong> his failed marriage; <strong>in</strong>stead, he stereotypes all women <strong>and</strong>withdraws <strong>in</strong>to a life full of bitterness.Mary Garth <strong>and</strong> Fred V<strong>in</strong>cyUnlike the Casaubon <strong>and</strong> Lydgate marriages, which were largely a product offantasy <strong>and</strong> crippled by disillusionment, the relationship between Mary Garth <strong>and</strong>Fred V<strong>in</strong>cy depends upon open communication, honesty, <strong>and</strong> rationality. However,the success of this relationship is not a result of Fred's <strong>in</strong>itiative, but Mary's. Gilbert<strong>and</strong> Gubar state that "by shap<strong>in</strong>g Fred's life <strong>and</strong> values, <strong>in</strong> fact, she demonstrates theelevat<strong>in</strong>g effect of a woman's <strong>in</strong>fluence" (513). Neither Dorothea nor Rosamond hasan uplift<strong>in</strong>g, positive effect on her husb<strong>and</strong> like Mary does for Fred. Mary isdifferent from these two other female characters because she refuses to lose herself<strong>in</strong> wishful th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g; both her upbr<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> her station <strong>in</strong> life cause her to relysolely on common sense <strong>and</strong> honesty to achieve her goals.Although Eliot devotes only a m<strong>in</strong>or portion of Middlemarch to show therelationship between Mary <strong>and</strong> Fred, these two characters represent optimism about


28marriage <strong>in</strong> a novel that critically exam<strong>in</strong>es the flaws <strong>and</strong> misconceptions with<strong>in</strong> themarriage union. While Dorothea is shaped by her religious zeal <strong>and</strong> Rosamond ischaracterized as the product of a f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g school, Mary's ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>in</strong> thenovel is her parents, an <strong>in</strong>fluence that is lack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Dorothea's life <strong>and</strong> undeveloped<strong>in</strong> Rosamond's. This parental guidance molds Mary's views on the world, especiallyconcern<strong>in</strong>g a potential marriage with Fred. Her relationship with her father, CalebGarth, is particularly important <strong>in</strong> her development <strong>in</strong> the novel. Mr. Garthfrequently offers advice to his daughter, especially concern<strong>in</strong>g marriage, oncestat<strong>in</strong>g, "A woman, let her be as good as she may, has got to put up with the life herhusb<strong>and</strong> makes for her" (Eliot 287). Mary shares many of the same qualities that herfather possesses, "but she is a less simplified <strong>and</strong> therefore more <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>gcharacter because of her acuteness of perception <strong>and</strong> trenchancy of judgment— shegauges everybody" (McSweeney 78). Although Mary could develop elaboratefantasies as a means of "escape" <strong>in</strong> her present station <strong>in</strong> life, she does not allowherself to become mired <strong>in</strong> such fantasies; as a result, Mary's life is free of theheartache <strong>and</strong> turmoil evident <strong>in</strong> the lives of Dorothea <strong>and</strong> Rosamond.Concern<strong>in</strong>g Mary's physical attributes, Eliot describes her <strong>in</strong> contrast to thephysical beauty of Dorothea <strong>and</strong> Rosamond, further differentiat<strong>in</strong>g her from them.Mary is pla<strong>in</strong>, brown, <strong>and</strong> short <strong>in</strong> stature, but "honesty, truth-tell<strong>in</strong>g fairness, wasMary's reign<strong>in</strong>g virtue: she neither tried to create illusions, nor <strong>in</strong>dulged <strong>in</strong> them"(Eliot 124). Com<strong>in</strong>g from a lower-middle class family <strong>and</strong> possess<strong>in</strong>g little physical


29beauty, Mary could easily have created an illusory world for herself on a muchlarger scale than either Dorothea or Rosamond did. However, Mary realizes theimportance of "truth- tell<strong>in</strong>g fairness," <strong>and</strong> she refuses to become bl<strong>in</strong>ded by aromance with Fred, even though his middle-class rank would improve her status.Unlike Dorothea <strong>and</strong> Rosamond, who <strong>in</strong>itially see their happ<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> their futurehusb<strong>and</strong>s, Mary does not enterta<strong>in</strong> such fantasies. In fact, to all <strong>in</strong>tents <strong>and</strong>purposes, it is she who makes Fred (Blake 301). Mary not only serves as a foil forDorothea <strong>and</strong> Rosamond, but she also represents the one woman <strong>in</strong> the novel whohas some positive control over her relationship with the opposite sex.From the time Eliot <strong>in</strong>troduces Mary <strong>and</strong> Fred, they clearly have a court<strong>in</strong>grelationship. Mary expla<strong>in</strong>s "that she loves Fred, 'Because I have always loved him/<strong>and</strong> throughout Middlemarch runs the suggestion that present action follows thecourse of past desires" (Chase 140). Mary's present action <strong>in</strong>dicates that, althoughshe loves Fred, she is not <strong>in</strong> a hurry to marry him. She sees Fred's irresponsiblenature, <strong>and</strong>, although un<strong>in</strong>tentional, his gambl<strong>in</strong>g results <strong>in</strong> constant debts. Maryknows that she can never marry a man with such a nature, <strong>and</strong> will not "put upwith" his lack of focus <strong>and</strong> responsibility. She knows, <strong>and</strong> confesses <strong>in</strong> confidence toFarebrother, that she "will never be [Fred's] wife if he becomes a clergyman....Hisbe<strong>in</strong>g a clergyman would be only for gentility's sake, <strong>and</strong> there is noth<strong>in</strong>g morecontemptible than such imbecile gentility" (Eliot 573-574). Mary loves Fred enoughto <strong>in</strong>sist that he form his character not around what his family or society deems him


30to be, but around what is truly appropriate for him as an <strong>in</strong>dividual. Without thisunfl<strong>in</strong>ch<strong>in</strong>g guidance from Mary, Fred would have entered the clergy, most likelyresult<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a life of discontentment.While both Dorothea <strong>and</strong> Rosamond <strong>in</strong>itially placed marriage on a pedestal<strong>and</strong> set the union as an idealized goal <strong>in</strong> their lives, Mary does not view marriage <strong>in</strong>this manner. She has the opportunity on several occasions throughout the novel tomarry either Fred or Farebrother; however, she does not pursue those possibilities.Obviously, Mary loves Fred <strong>and</strong> cares for Farebrother, but follow<strong>in</strong>g her father'sadvice, she is not anxious to "put up with" the life either man offers her. As a result,Mary appears to be a likely c<strong>and</strong>idate for sp<strong>in</strong>sterhood. Not only does she possessthe pla<strong>in</strong>, homely appearance of a stereotypical sp<strong>in</strong>ster, but she is also forced toseek employment outside her parents' home. After Peter Featherstone dies, leav<strong>in</strong>gMary without a source of <strong>in</strong>come, she prepares to teach <strong>in</strong> a school at York.Concern<strong>in</strong>g this situation, she tells her parents, "You see, I must teach: there isnoth<strong>in</strong>g else to be done," even though she adds, "I am not fond of a schoolroom: Ilike the outside world better" (Eliot 444). Even though Mary confesses that shewould not enjoy teach<strong>in</strong>g, she is prepared to do so rather than accept a marriageproposal from Fred <strong>and</strong> become the wife of a man who lacks self-motivation <strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>tegrity.Mary expects Fred to develop the "honesty <strong>and</strong> truth-tell<strong>in</strong>g fairness" withwhich she views the world, but Fred's ma<strong>in</strong> goal is simply to wed Mary. He knows


31that compared to her, he is a foolish, irresponsible, egotistical person; however, healso believes that "only the love of a good woman can save him" (McSweeney 84).Therefore, Fred's perceptions of marriage are much different from those ofCasaubon <strong>and</strong> Lydgate. Fred is not ignorant about Mary's m<strong>in</strong>d or her expectationsabout marriage. They have known each other s<strong>in</strong>ce childhood, <strong>and</strong> Fred alsoproposed to Mary as a child, giv<strong>in</strong>g her an umbrella r<strong>in</strong>g to "seal" the engagement.S<strong>in</strong>ce that time, Fred has been aware of his attraction to Mary, <strong>and</strong> their relationshiphas matured over several years. This maturity, <strong>and</strong> the maturity that Fred ga<strong>in</strong>s withthe help of Mary <strong>and</strong> Mr. Garth, lays a strong foundation for the marriagerelationship that Fred <strong>and</strong> Mary prepare for.When Fred becomes aware of Mary's will<strong>in</strong>gness to wait for him to establisha suitable occupation, he ga<strong>in</strong>s a courage <strong>and</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>ation that he lackedpreviously <strong>in</strong> the novel. Serv<strong>in</strong>g as Mr. Garth's apprentice, Fred knows that it willtake a few years for him to prepare f<strong>in</strong>ancially for marriage. However, Mary is notdiscouraged; she states, "I have been s<strong>in</strong>gle <strong>and</strong> merry for four-<strong>and</strong>-twenty years<strong>and</strong> more: I suppose it will not be quite as long aga<strong>in</strong> as that" (Eliot 913). Of thethree unions described <strong>in</strong> this paper, Fred <strong>and</strong> Mary's is the only one that survives<strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>ale, achiev<strong>in</strong>g "a solid mutual happ<strong>in</strong>ess" (Eliot 918). Both charactersdemonstrate devotion <strong>and</strong> patience, characteristics necessary for a successfulmarriage relationship.


32ConclusionWhen Eliot created the marriages between Dorothea <strong>and</strong> Casaubon,Rosamond <strong>and</strong> Lydgate, <strong>and</strong> Mary <strong>and</strong> Fred, she forced her readers to exam<strong>in</strong>e<strong>Victorian</strong> society's concepts about the traditional marriage union. By sett<strong>in</strong>g hernovel <strong>in</strong> 1832, however, Eliot satirizes society at that time, while simultaneouslyhighlight<strong>in</strong>g the fact that many of those problems <strong>in</strong> the 1830s still existed <strong>in</strong> the1870s. For example, the conduct books <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g school ideology that <strong>in</strong>fluencedDorothea <strong>and</strong> Rosamond were immensely popular, especially <strong>in</strong> the first half of then<strong>in</strong>eteenth century. Even though the <strong>in</strong>fluence of these books <strong>and</strong> this educationbegan to dw<strong>in</strong>dle <strong>in</strong> the late n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century, the women who were trapped <strong>in</strong>this m<strong>in</strong>dset still suffered the consequences of false perceptions <strong>and</strong> expectationsconcern<strong>in</strong>g marriage. These traditional notions of an ideal marriage unionemphasized social status, f<strong>in</strong>ancial security, <strong>and</strong> voluntary self-sacrifice by the wife.However, as the <strong>Victorian</strong> era progressed, many people, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Eliot, criticallyexam<strong>in</strong>ed these traditions <strong>and</strong> proposed a concept of marriage that emphasizedlove, honesty, <strong>and</strong> mutual underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g as the keys to a successful relationship. InMiddlemarch, Fred <strong>and</strong> Mary represent Eliot's optimism about marriage <strong>in</strong> a novelfilled with problematic relationships. The Lydgate <strong>and</strong> Casaubon marriages faillargely because these unions are grounded <strong>in</strong> illusions, but Fred <strong>and</strong> Mary focus onone another <strong>and</strong> acquire the mutual underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g necessary for a successfulmarriage.


33Although the majority of Eliot's novel focuses on courtship <strong>and</strong> earlymarriage, she also shows the mature marriage relationship between Nicholas <strong>and</strong>Harriet Bulstrode, which merits some discussion. This marriage, like the three others<strong>in</strong> the novel, represents "the union of a worthy spouse with a more-or-less unworthyone" (Green 89), but the difference lies <strong>in</strong> how the Bulstrodes cope with the threat totheir marriage. When the sc<strong>and</strong>als about Bulstrode' s past <strong>and</strong> the death of JohnRaffles become public, Harriet never contemplates leav<strong>in</strong>g her husb<strong>and</strong>, althoughmany of her friends th<strong>in</strong>k a separation would be appropriate (Eliot 824). Harrietundergoes a shock when she discovers the sc<strong>and</strong>als, <strong>and</strong> "the twenty years <strong>in</strong> whichshe had believed <strong>in</strong> him <strong>and</strong> venerated him by virtue of his concealments came backwith particulars that made them seem as odious deceit" (Eliot 831). Even thoughHarriet feels betrayed by Bulstrode, she "had a loyal spirit with<strong>in</strong> her. The manwhose prosperity she had shared through nearly half a life, <strong>and</strong> who hadunvary<strong>in</strong>gly cherished her— now that punishment had befallen him it was notpossible to her <strong>in</strong> any sense to forsake him" (Eliot 831). Eliot endorses Harriet'svirtues of loyalty <strong>and</strong> honesty, but her "loyalty to her dishonored husb<strong>and</strong> mostvividly <strong>and</strong> dramatically acts out devotion to duty, <strong>and</strong> she most greatly suffersfrom it" (Green 90). Harriet does suffer, rel<strong>in</strong>quish<strong>in</strong>g "all the gladness <strong>and</strong> pride ofher life" (Eliot 832) to support her disgraced husb<strong>and</strong>. Because of her decision,Harriet is a woman of strength <strong>and</strong> courage, <strong>and</strong> these qualities are also evident <strong>in</strong>Mary Garth. Just as Mary shapes Fred's development before their marriage, Harriet


34molds her marriage with Bulstrode by rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g loyal to him throughout the courseof their relationship.As a critic of marriage throughout her life, Eliot's representation of marriage<strong>in</strong> Middlemarch demonstrates how the <strong>Victorian</strong> concept of marriage had evolvedby 1872. The positive aspects of this progress emerge <strong>in</strong> Mary <strong>and</strong> Harriet, womenunfettered by fantasies of an unrealistic union. While Mary <strong>and</strong> Harriet reject thetraditional n<strong>in</strong>eteenth-century goals of marriage that Dorothea <strong>and</strong> Rosamonduphold, both women rema<strong>in</strong> honest with themselves <strong>and</strong> their spouses. Eliot, as anem<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>Victorian</strong> woman <strong>and</strong> an early fem<strong>in</strong>ist, was acutely aware of the necessityfor open communication <strong>and</strong> equality between the sexes <strong>in</strong> a marriage relationship.In Middlemarch, Eliot clearly shows the progressive strides made <strong>in</strong> these areas, butshe also demonstrates the immense need for further development <strong>in</strong> the future.
