Bomb damages Wis. Planned Parenthood
clinic
Police in Grand Chute, Wis., say a homemade
explosive device placed outside a Planned Parenthood
clinic caused minor damage to an examination room
when it went off Sunday.
There were no staff members or patients inside the
building when the device exploded, the Appleton Post
Crescent reports.
Teri Huyck, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood
of Wisconsin, says the clinic will re-open Tuesday.
The device, which Police Chief Greg Peterson says
consisted of a plastic bottle filled with "agents of an
incendiary quality," had been placed on an outside
windowsill, the Post Crescent reports.
The explosion ignited a small fire that burned out
before firefighters arrived to check on a tripped alarm.
Peterson says authorities had not heard of any prior
threats against the clinic.
The Criminal Section of the Justice Department's Civil
Rights Division has opened an investigation into the
incident, a DOJ spokeswoman tells Talking Points
Memo.
TPM also reports that Republican presidential
candidate Rick Santorum, who is campaigning in
Wisconsin this week, condemned the incident.
"While we can and should work to defund Planned
Parenthood and push back against government
mandates that force Americans and religious institution
to violate their faith, violence against our fellow citizens
has no place in a freedom-loving America," Santorum
says in a statement to TPM.
