Third-party packages (like SymphonyT"I1 and AutoCAD) run significantly faster with the8087 installed. The product consists of a board and a software diskette. The board plugs into a special socket on the HP150 I1 processor board; it does not take up an I10 slot. Thus it cannot be retrofitted in the HP150AlB owing to hardware limitations. The softwarediskette contains updated Pascal and FORTRAN RuntimeLibraries for version 3.13 of these compilers. The co-processor is supported by the Pascal (HP45447D), Lattice C (HP 45452D) and FORTRAN(HP 45449AtD) compilers and by the MSrM-DOSMacroAssembler. FORTRAN and Pascal programsdeveloped using version 3.13 (HP 45449A and HP45447D respectively) will need to be relinked usingthe updated runtime libraries available on the diskette.Lattice C (HP 45452D) and FORTRAN ver. 3.2(HP 45449D) programs need not be relinked - theywill automatically take advantage of the 8087 when itis installed. The 8087 will be transparent to the user (designed tobe 100 percent compatible with existing HP 150application programs). The HP 45885A will be offered as a field-installableboard-level accessory - it must be installed by an HPCE or authorized HP dealer. DDA provides users with thenecessary information to interface their customizednetworking software to the driver contained in HPLAN11000 Link. The DDA product is specifically designed for OEMsand sophisticated end users who want to tailor theirown networking software and communicate over alocal-area network (LAN). The user should be veryknowledgeable with the RTE-A operating system andIEEE 802.3 protocol before considering this product.Along with the introduction of the DDA product is theHP LAN11000 Link product. The LAN11000 Linkproduct provides the necessary hardware to enable anHP 1000 A-Series computer to communicate over a10-Mbitlsec IEEE 802.3 or Ethernet Rev. 1 LAN.Included with the hardware are the interface driver,node-management software, and installation manual. The LAN11000 Link joins the growing line of HPAdvanceNet products in providing yet anothersystem-to-system communication capability. The LAN11000 Link provides two major benefits: alow connection cost per node with a high data-transferrate and the ability to communicate with other vendors'equipment. The LAN11000 Link provides asingle interface to communicate with up to 100 nodesresiding on a single 500-meter LAN segment. Thisprovides an economy over point-to-point interfaces, which require a separate interface card for each node.In a four-node point-to-point star configuration, theLAN provides a 20 percent cost savings and in a fullyconnected four-node network, the savings are 50 percent. The IEEE 802.3 LAN standard implements abus topology and Carrier Sense Multiple Access withCollision Detection (CSMAICD) contention schemefor accessing the LAN. Once the data has access to theLAN, information can move at a rate of 10 Mbitslsecalong the cable. Actual performance will depend onthe user-written networking software, CPU utilization,LAN utilization, and size of data packets.HP AdvanceNet products are designed and built on afirm commitment to both industry and defacto standards.Because of this commitment, you now havethe ability to write software to communicate not onlywith other HP 1000 A-Series computers but also withother vendors' equipment that conforms to the IEEE802.3 or Ethernet Rev. 1 standards.PIN12076AOpt. 001Opt. 022Opt. 044Opt. 051Opt. 241DescriptionHP LAN11000 LinkIncludes interface card, cardconnector cable, six-meter FEPAttachment Unit Interface cable,Medium Attachment Unit, andinstallation manual.Deletes AUI, MAU, andIEEE 802.3 card connectorcable. The high volume oforders for the HP 260 indicate an overwhelming, preference for the new system. As a result, the HP250 SPU, HP 45260A, will be removed from the HPPrice List on January 1, 1986 and will not bemanufactured after that date. The HP 260 SF'U, HP 45261D, is fully compatible withHP 250 application software. Business Computersfirmware board delivery deadline:Any user who accepted delivery of a highperformanceSeries 39,42, or 48 with MPE VIPand disc caching by December 31, 1984, is eligibleto receive MPE VIE firmware board (PIN 30400A)at no charge. This eligibility deadline has notchanged.Eligible users must order and accept delivery of theno charge firmware board by July 31,1986, insteadof the former promotion deadline of July 10, 1985.If the user does not accept delivery of the board bythe cutoff date, they forfeit the right to the nocharge firmware board. What to do about ordersAre you a user who is eligible to receive the firmwareboard under the program? It is very important thateligible users understand that you have until July 31,1986, to accept delivery of the no charge firmwareboard. Any user who has ordered the board, but notaccepted delivery, may cancel the order and takedelivery at a later date before the new deadline. There are several things you must note:Users do not need the new firmware to run arelease of the MPE VIE operating system. Releasesof MPE VIE will run on the old firmware and userscan get much of the benefit of MPE VIE expandedtables functionality. Therefore, plan your move toMPE VIE software; get comfortable with the software;then add the firmware if and when you needit. Remember, MPE VIE is, and will continue to be,supported on both firmware versions.MPE VIE is the basis for future operating system, subsystem, and application development. There willnot be another release of MPE VIP. All future HP3000 system software, subsystem, and peripheralenhancements will only be supported on releases ofMPE VIE. Note that you will not necessarily needthe MPE VIE firmware in order to take advantageof these future capabilities.HP has put tremendous efforts during the past yearinto quality engineering to ensure that you are protectedfrom software problems. You should notethat MPE VIE, and T-MIT (the second release ofMPE VIE) are running reliably on thousands of HP3000s. The Series 37 runs only T-MIT and we havehundreds of satisfied customers already.Furthermore, T-Delta-1 (the third release of MPEVIE) has been released for distribution to users. Itwill continue to be available as this option throughoutthe life of the HP 262X terminal family.MASS STORAGEHP 7914CT: HP's new disc/tapesubsystemThe HP 7914CT is Hewlett-Packard's new 132-Mbyte high-performance dual-controller discltapesubsystem. This discltape package combines the HP7914 disc drive with the new HP 9144A cartridgetape drive in a 720mm cabinet. The HP 9144Acartridge tape (CT) drive, with read-after-writecapabilities, provides improved data transferreliability, and the CT cabinet makes it one-thirdquieter than the HP 7914P.System supportHP 3000 users with the T-MIT operating system willbe glad to hear that the HP 7914CT costs less than theHP 7914P Opt. 001 (dual-controller configuration).Unlike the HP 7914P's tape drive, the HP 9144A tapedrive doesn't require a dedicated GIC (general interfacechannel). Thus, HP 3000 users may save evenmore by using the CT because they can put a printeror plotter on the same GIC with the HP 9144A tapedrive.Users with HP 9000 Series 500 CPUs may prefer theHP 7914CT over the HP 7914P STD (shared controllerconfiguration). The HP 7914CT and the HP7914P STD are the same price, but the CT has filebackup performance improvements over the STDversion.HP 1000 A-Series CPUs with RTE-A A.85 operatingsystems now support both the HP 7914CT and the HP7914P STD configuration. The HP 7914CT is thesame price as the STD, but the CT has a 40 percentimprovement in file-backup performance.Deep discountHP's model 7914CT discltape drive is offered on theOEM "A" deep discount schedule. For more information, contact your HP sales rep.20.5-Mbyte removable disccartridge availableHP's Direct Marketing Division (DMK) now offers a20.5-Mbyte removable disc cartridge supported on theHP 7907A fixedlremovable mass storage subsystem(PIN 97907A).The new 20.5-Mby te removable disc cartridge - is availablefrom DMK.Computer Focus - International16 JU,,N~~
