HYPOBARIC CHAMBERThe High Altitude and Decompression ChamberAMST - SYSTEMTECHNIK GMBH

THE BENEFITSTraining in a Hypobaric Chamber demonstrates to the pilots the effect of insufficient oxygen causing the impairmentof cerebral functions. There is a wide variation between individuals, so it is not possible to predict the exact altitude at which physical andmental impairment may occur. This leads with increasing altitude to impaired thinking and judgement, slowingreactions, lack of mental and muscular coordination, diminished vision and hearing, and impairment of memory.Eventually, there is a loss of consciousness, and, ultimately death.High Altitude Training at an early stage sharpens the recognition of hypoxia and is an important contribution toincrease flight safety. *)The High Altitude and Decompression Chamber is designed for:- High Altitude Training to investigate the influence of low oxygen saturation in the human body demonstrated bypsycho-physiological behaviour.- Investigation of the psycho-physiological behaviour of the human body due to rapid or explosive decompression- Sports training, and training at higher altitudes during extended and continuous operation of the chamber duringseveral days or weeks- Research- To increase flight safetyHYPOBARIC CHAMBER3:23:19 3:23:20 3:23:21*) Reference: Human Performance and Limitations in Aviation, R. D. Campbell & M. Bagshaw

DESIGNThe chamber design can be either round or square in cross-section, consisting of a main chamber forhigh altitude training and an outside chamber to simulate rapid, or explosive, decompression. It also will be used as an transfer compartment in case of an emergency or as a wash room in case of along term research or training programmes. The AMST design is at the cutting edge of technology, where us other suppliers have not kept pacewith available developments. Ask an independant expert source (university) to compare thespecifications and safety systems, they will see the 25-30 years technology gapThe chamber and system design are based on thefollowing standards:ASME PVHO-1:ASME, Section VIII, Div. 1:NFPA 9GB:73/23/EEC:89/336/EEC:93/68/EEC:“Pressure vessels for human occupancy”“Pressure vessel code”“Standard of Hypobaric Facilities“Electrical Equipment Design”“Electromagnetic Compatibility”“CE conformity”Material used:- high ductility steel for chamber structure- stainless steel for vacuum tubes- windows certified according ASME PVHO-1HYPOBARIC CHAMBER The High Altitude and Decompression Chamber

The chambervolume will be exchanged by Fresh Air every tenminutes. The fresh air will also be pre-airconditionedto keep the chamber temperature asselected. Additionally, the fresh air supply isdesigned to control the oxygen content inside thechamber below the critical design value for firehazard.

STUDENT SEAT AND INTERIOR DESIGNErgonomic and attractive design because of:- Hypobaric Chamber should never give the impression of a ’’Torture Chamber’’- the seats should have a adequate comfort, since a training session could lastseveral hours- it should look similar to a training room, comfortable and friendly- it has to be easily cleanableEquipment for student/instructor seat:For the student and instructor seat, either single seats or two and three seat benchesare available, designed as roll-in roll-out equipment for quick modification of the mainchamber for using additional equipment such as stretchers, or sports equipment. The seats have an ergonomic design, and are equipped with:- oxygen supply (two supplies) and oxygen regulator (GFE) and personalequipment connector (GFE)- pressurised air supply- connector for two way communication- connector for computer system- connector for medical monitoring system- connector for psychological measurement system headsetAdditional for the instructor seat:- switchboard for communication system to select communication:ooooto the instructor outsideto a single student inside orto a selected group of students orto all students- switchboard for oxygen supply:o to switch, in case of an emergency, from the main supply to theauxiliary supplyHYPOBARIC CHAMBER3:23:25 3:23:26 3:23:27

CHAMBER SYSTEMS:- two way communication system- video system- oxygen and pressurised air supply- illumination system adjustable- medical monitoring system (e. g. ECG, SaO2, NiBP, heart frequency on request)- psychological monitoring system (tests and equipment on request)- oxygen concentration measurement system- Fire suppression system. Based on water and pressurised air- Air conditioning system for each chamber compartment- Fresh air supply system for each chamber compartment- Instrumentation, both chamber compartments are equipped with instruments showingthe altitude, the speed, temperature and humidity.- Audio: in both compartments a random microphone and loudspeaker are installed.FOR LONG TERM RESEARCH/TRAINING:- entertainment system (TV, DVD, Radio, Internet connection)- water basin (installed in the outside compartment)- toilet (installed in the outside compartment)- tread mill- ergo meter- pass through lock for medication/food.A PRODUCT OFAMST - SYSTEMTECHNIK GMBH

SAFETY SYSTEMS:To avoid hazard situations inside the chamber due to fire or low oxygen, the following safetyfunctions are installed:1) Oxygen measurement systems for each compartment: The oxygen measurement systemmeasures the oxygen concentration continuously and independently for eachcompartment. In case of a certain limit (usually 23,5 Vol.% O ) will be exceeded, a2warning signal will appear at the control station to initiate counter measures bythe operator,2) Oxygen supply is designed as a two line supply to each seat in case one supply fails, theinstructor inside the chamber is able to switch over to the second (auxiliary supply).3) Overhead supply (two units) moveable along the whole chamber and installed on thechamber ceiling for emergency.4) Fire and smoke detectors inside each compartment with an alarm at the controlstation5) Fire suppression system according to NFPA-99B (water + pressurised air). On request asystem based on Inergen (inert gas) can be supplied which would incrase the safety ofthe whole system (recommended by European standard for buildings).6) Fresh air supply in parallel to the air conditioning system, the fresh air supply can beused to lower the oxygen concentration inside the chamber.7) Independent fire extinguishers inside the chamber.8) UPS-system to control, in case of an main power failure, the:- Lights- Audio, video, mechanical system- Control voltage for valves (control)- Control system + computerThe vacuum pumps are switched off. The advantage of this solution is that thetraining session need not be interrupted. If the main power is back, the training can becontinued normally.9) Safety valves for rapid manual descent of main and outside chamber.HYPOBARIC CHAMBER3:23:28 3:23:29 3:23:30

OPTIONS:Automatic oxygen fault simulation:The normal procedure during hypobaric training is to disconnect from oxygen supply. In this case, the pilot knows exactly that he is without oxygen supply and this couldinfluence the quality of the training. In the automatic oxygen fault simulation, theoxygen supply will be switched to pressurised air supply from outside without anyrecognition. In case hypoxia occurs, he has to take the correct counter measures byswitching to 100 % oxygen supply. If he is not able to perform the correct countermeasures, the outside operator is able to switch over to 100 % oxygen for each seat.Additionally, the oxygen saturation is monitored at the control station including anadjustable limit switch. In case the limit will be exceeded, a warning signal appears.Charts & Models:- 3D-ear model, 3 times life size (1 ear model and 1 model of Labyrinth)- Anatomy of the inner ear anatomical chart- 3D-eye model- The eye anatomical chartA PRODUCT OFAMST - SYSTEMTECHNIK GMBH
