A group of budding film makers from Hornsby Heights Public School has come
out on top with its entry in a competition to highlight exactly what it is that makes
a school a source of pride to its students.
As the Northern Sydney Region winner of the ‘Primary School’ category in the
second annual Great Schools Show-Off (GSSO) competition, Hornsby Heights
School receives a $600 digital ‘Tough’ still camera from Panasonic for its efforts.
Over 180 schools submitted video entries to the competition judges. “This video
highlights the many opportunities that are available for students to excel at
Hornsby Heights Public School,” according to the school’s submission.

Taking the form of a tour of the school and its facilities – led by the school’s
captains and featuring comments from parents and teachers – the school
intends to screen the video at school information nights, kindergarten orientation
programs, community events and on its website.
The school’s video is now vying for the state Primary prize of a high-definition
camcorder and plasma television package worth over $2,500. Winners will be
announced in a ceremony at Doltone House, Pyrmont, on Friday, 3 August, to
close Education Week 2012.

Harry Fox OAM …
Remembered

I attended the funeral service for
one of our community stalwarts
‘Harry’ Henry James Fox OAM of
Berowra Heights (86) on Friday 6
July 2012.
I travelled to the funeral service
at Macquarie Park Crematorium
(North Ryde, Sydney) with Alan
Foody of Mt Colah. It was a great
sunny day.
“Harry Fox was my Vice President
for 15 years,” said Alan, President
of the Berowra over 55 Club for 18
years (formerly known as Berowra
Senior Citizens).
Alan told me that he had given
Harry a lift to the Over 55’s meet
at Berowra Community Centre
the previous Wed 27 June. Harry
wasn’t feeling well but still wanted
to go to the weekly gathering held
9am -12noon. After the meet Alan
drove Harry to the medical centre at
Berowra Heights. It was from there
that Harry was admitted to Hornsby/
Ku-ring-gai Hospital.
That was the spirit of our Harry,
always putting his community
commitments before himself.
A line of honour was formed at the
entrance to the Magnolia Chapel
by Harry’s mates from Berowra,
Brooklyn, and Hornsby RSL Sub
Branches (SB).
“My father was a complex
character: loving, compassionate,
stoic, strong, gregarious, polite,
even charming, scrupulously honest
but also single minded, some would
say bloody minded, wilful, jealous
and suspicious. Everyone knew
his politics but his life experiences
determined his politics. There were
only two ways, Harry’s way and
the wrong way. You were either
with him or agin him. He wore his
opinions on his sleeve and always
let everyone know them,” said
Harry’s eldest son Ian Fox in his
funeral tribute.
Harry was born in Cammeray,
Sydney. His parents were Noel
James Fox and Margaret
Elizabeth Fox (nee Arnemann).

They had 7 children. Two attended
the funeral: Joyce Gardner from
Carlingford and John Fox from Red
Rock near Coffs Harbour.
Harry grew up in Manly and was
never a bragger. With the family
name of Fox, Harry grew up with
the nickname of ‘Brushytail’. He
was an athlete and at age 12 whilst
attending Manly Christian Brothers
(now St. Paul’s Catholic College)
broke the ‘All Schools’ long jump
record during training. He was also
a Nipper then rower with North
Steyne Surf Lifesaving Club. Harry
played rugby league with North Curl
Curl and rugby union with Manly
where he also coached having been
the club’s ball boy in the 1930s.
At age 6 Harry, whilst standing at
the Milsons Point end of the bridge
witnessed the first vehicles cross
the Sydney Harbour Bridge at its
opening on Sat 19 March 1932.
He was ambidextrous and
ambipedestrous before such terms
became commonly used. He was
a left handed batter, a right handed
tennis player and was equally
dexterous using either foot in
various sports.
Harry met his future wife Enid
Jean Anderson in Manly. They
were married at St Joseph’s Enfield
on 10 April 1951 and moved to
Berowra Heights in1959 when the
whole area was then known as
Berowra.
Harry loved his family: 5 children,
7 grandchildren and 10 great
grandchildren. He taught his
children social justice and believed
that education was more valuable
than gold.
Harry’s father and grandfather
were both WW1 veterans. His
dad Noel James Fox was on the
Western Front whilst his grandfather
James Francis Fox was an ANZAC.
Yes, both served in the same war.
Harry tried to join the Navy but
failed the eye test. “Those bloody
confetti books” Harry had said. Yes,
Harry was colour blind.

and figuratively,” said Ian. He was
however accepted by the Army.
Private Harry Fox NX 195141
served in the Australian Army
20/4/1944 - 14/7/1947 with the 65 th
Battalion. During WW2 he served in
the Pacific and was with the British
Commonwealth Occupational
Forces (BCOF) in Japan in the
immediate post war period including
Hiroshima, 6mths after the atomic
bomb was dropped on 6 August
1945.
He took part in the search for the
escaped Japanese POWs in the
Cowra Breakout of 1 July 1944
and was one of the first to see the
6th & 8th Div POWs when they
attended the hospital at Moratai
(now part of eastern Indonesia) at
the end of the war in 1945. He was
a 16 year old teenager during the
Japanese submarine shelling of
Sydney suburbs, and the Japanese
midget submarine attack on Sydney
Harbour on the night of 31 May
1942.
Harry had great respect for the
Aboriginals who served in his
unit and he supported the 1967
referendum for inclusion of them
into our society.
Harry also supported his ex-service
comrades including our Vietnam
Vets who were not given a welcome
home parade on their return home
to Australia. He openly supported
and encouraged them to join the
RSL as he did with our Indigenous
Defence personnel.

Ian from Narrabri, Neil from Nowra,
Graeme from Darwin and their only
daughter Fiona Roberts of Hornsby.
Fiona’s granddaughter Zoe Roberts
was born on Harry’s 85 th birthday

Cameron travelled from Brisbane.

Harry’s 3 rd son Alan Martin
‘Marty’ Fox along with his fiancee
Anneke Adriansen of Asquith both
disappeared under mysterious/
suspicious circumstances whilst
visiting Kempsey NSW in 1978 and
have been missing since.
This personal family tragedy
saw Harry’s involvement with the
‘Family and Friends of Missing
Persons Group’ becoming its
President and later Patron. It was
for Harry’s dedicated passion
and work with this group that he
received his OAM in 1998.
SUPT Peter Marcon of Eastwood
Police whilst I/C Missing Persons
(1990 -2002) worked with Harry on
the Missing Persons Committee.
Harry was given the unofficial tile
of ‘Honorary Sergeant NSW Police
Missing Persons Branch’ by his
NSW Police colleages.
“Harry was a tireless worker... a
quiet achiever ...part of the Missing
Persons family ...a very likeable
man with leadership qualities,” said
SUPT Marcon who attended the
funeral.

Child abduction case
charges laid
Police have arrested and charged
a man with child abduction and
kidnapping offences over incidents
involving two girls on Sydney’s
North Shore.
Strike Force Middural was formed
by detectives from State Crime
Command’s Sex Crimes Squad and
Kuring Gai Local Area Command to
investigate two incidents involving a
six-year-old girl at South Turramurra
and a 14-year-old girl at Westleigh.
Police will allege the six-year-old girl
was grabbed by a man as she rode
her scooter at the Canoon Road
Netball Courts, South Turramurra,
on Thursday 23 February 2012.
Several onlookers came to the girl’s
assistance and the man fled into
nearby bushland.
In the second incident, police will
allege the 14-year-old girl was
approached by a man as she
walked across a footbridge near the
Benowie Walking Track and Great
Northern Walk, Westleigh, just
before 3pm on Thursday 26 April
2012.
The man put his hands around the
teenager’s throat and threatened
her with a knife before pushing her
backwards towards a side track
near the bridge. He continued to
threaten the girl before she fell to
the ground.
As some people walked nearby, the
girl managed to run away and raise
the alarm.
Strike force detectives arrested a
49-year-old man at a Castle Hill
house just before 7pm Sunday 15
July 2012.

saying, “This was an exhaustive
investigation by dedicated
detectives with a commendable
result and I would also like to

Out of Control Party
Around 9.00pm on Saturday 14 th
July 2012, Police shutdown an out
of control birthday party at Berowra.
Following reports from concerned
community members, Officers from
Kuring Gai Local Area Command
responded immediately and
attended the community hall on The
Gully Road.
Upon arrival at the scene, they
discovered around 200 revellers
inside and outside the venue.
One partygoer made threats
towards police before leading them
on a foot chase.
Additional resources from the Public
Order and Riot Squad were brought
in to assist local police disperse the
large crowd.
A 17-yearold
male
youth was
arrested
and taken
to Hornsby
Police
Station,
where he
was issued
a Criminal
Infringement
Notice (CIN) for failing to comply
with a police direction.
The community centre sustained
extensive damage during the
event. Investigations by police are
continuing.

Following a series of recent public workshops, local
community group Community Voice (C.V), will hold
another workshop this Tues 31 July 2012, 7pm to
8.30pm in the Acacia Room at Hornsby RSL Club.
The objective is to focus on input, concerns and questions
from all residents, and in particularly those affected by
actual or proposed re-zoning.
“This is your opportunity to give valuable input for the future of your community. Your feedback is important
and will be compiled by Community Voice as input for the upgrade to the Bushland Shire’s Local Environmental
Plan [LEP], the Development Control Plan [DCP], and the Housing Strategy upgrades, which will form
development guidelines for at least the next five years,” said Kim Mullins, Convenor for C.V
Community Voice is committed to working toward better outcomes for the community into the longer term.
It is carrying this work out on a purely voluntary basis and operates as a totally independent, unsponsored, non
aligned, non political, community association with no links with council.

financially viable to keep our Preschools running in the future.”

Dear BT,
Council’s current policy on smoke from wood
fires is inadequate.
Someone forced to breathe their neighbour’s
smoke is expected to observe their neighbour’s
chimney and fill out a diary — mission impossible
when the smoke is emitted after dark. In our area,
every night the pattern is the same — a strong
smoky smell arrives after dark and persists until
morning and sometimes well into the next day.
For those with wood stoves there is no incentive
at all to run them in accordance with Council’s
guidelines and it only takes a few smokey fires in
a street to ruin the air for everyone.
Whether or not people complain to Council —
and recent letters to the local papers suggest
that wood smoke is a problem for many — when
they smell smoke they are breathing toxic
particles which are damaging to their health.
These particles are small enough to enter the
bloodstream. Wood smoke also contains noxious
gases such as carbon monoxide, benzene,
formaldehyde and tolulene. According to the
federal Department of the Environment, “The
health problems associated with woodsmoke
include asthma, chronic lung disease, heart
problems and premature births and deaths.
Some of the toxic chemicals in woodsmoke are
known to cause cancer.” These health effects are
not in dispute; they are confirmed by the report
commissioned by the state government last year,
which finds that further regulation of wood smoke
would “produce substantial health benefit over
the years, valued at billions of dollars.”
People are not allowed to dump their rubbish
in the street in the 21st century, why are they
allowed to pollute the air we all have no choice
but to breathe?

Yet again I read of Clover Moores statement,
TBTW 5/7/2012, expressing her case for the
abolition of “puppy farms” and her concern for the
plight of surrendered animals.
To rectify this, she is in a favourable position
to introduce a private members bill, perhaps
seconded and detailed by the R.S.P.C.A. and
given public sentiment I am sure this could be
quickly legislated without demur.
To date, she has failed to act.
I will raise the matter with our local M.P. with view
to more forthright action.

BIG HOPS (Steps)
for a WALLABIE JUNIOR
Local Junior Berowra Wallaby Harry Rorke has achieved a lot since
playing all his junior days for the Berowra Wallabies. Harry, up until the
U15’s, has pulled on the maroon and white colours for his local team,
as well as playing rugby for his school at Riverview.
At the age of 15, he was selected for Riverview 1st XV in year 10, which was
an achievement in itself. In Year 11 he was selected in GPS (greater public
schools) 1st XV then NSW 2nd XV playing in the Australian Championships in
Queensland and then the Australian ‘A’ school boys team, playing against the
England under 18’s squad. He was then promoted to the Australian School’s
1st XV v New Zealand. He achieved his selection through a pool of talent from
NSW finest union schools including Knox, Oakhill, Kings, Barker and
St Gregory’s.
In 2012, Harry commenced his footy season by playing for South Sydney’s
SG Ball side in the tough front row position. He helped South’s make the
semi finals, but, lost to the eventual premiers Balmain, prior to school rugby
competition’s kick off.
When the school rugby competition commenced, Harry was immediately
selected in the GPS 1st XV and then the NSW schools 1st XV v QLD 1st XV,
where he played strongly to win the championships this year for the first time
in 7 years and pulling off a legendary ‘that tackle’ by George Gregan in
cover defense to give his side victory and win the internal Man of the Match
performance.
Harry has now been selected in the prestigious Australian School 1st XV to play
Tonga. Following on from this game the squad will tour Fiji and New Zealand
for three Test Matches while still having to focus on his HSC studies.
A tremendous feat for any young man.
Harry’s ambition is to graduate from Riverview and then commence an
electrical apprenticeship with Spaceage Electrics, while still pursuing a
professional rugby career.
Harry says that he credits his football achievements to the great coaching by
the legendary Mick Wall from the Wallabies. ‘Mick has always coached us with
the foundation of solid defence, capped with slick attacking finishes.’
Harry’s proud dad, Bernie was heard to say, ‘It seems like only yesterday I was
teaching him how to bust tackles as a five year ol’ in the back yard’.

It took me 5 hours on
Saturday to install a
bucket!
Sounds lke an easy job doesn’t it? It
sounds like something that should take
only a few moments however it was
not the job that I set out to do. What
I was trying to achieve was to install a
small tap under my sink to attach to the
plumbing of the new fridge we just had
delivered. I had planned what I needed
to do, I had made the mandatory trip
to the hardware store, I had checked
everything twice and then I started by
cutting the pipework under the sink.
In my own defence I usually am very
successful when it comes to ‘do-ityourself’
tasks but today was not my day.
Part of the problem was the location,
the pipework was hidden right up in
the back of the cupboard with very little
access and secondly there was only
a small amount of pipe to work with.
When I was ready, I cut the pipe, taped
up all the joints, installed the joining
section, checked everything was OK and
then turned the water back on. Result?
...Drips.
I inspected the work, retaped the joints,
tighted the nuts and bolts and... Drips.
I took it all apart once more, tried to
change the posistion of the parts slightly,
taped & tightened yet again and... Drips.
For a total of 5 hours I sat with half my
torso stuck I a cupboard getting water
dripped on my head!
Finally I did what I should have done
much earlier...I installed a bucket and
called a plumber!
When the plumber asked what was
wrong I told him straight - the problem
was me, I had done something wrong,
I thought I was OK but no matter how
hard I tried I fell short and ended up
with drips.
A couple of days later my bucket was
replaced by some effective pipework.
Experience, expertise and the right tools
made the difference. The best I could
come up with was a dripping tap but
now everything is fine, not a drip to be
seen and my failure has been rectified.
None of us are perfect, we all have
‘drips’ which display where we have
fallen short of the mark. Some of us
have contented ourselves with a bucket
to cover up our errors when really we
need an expert with the right tools and
experience to fix the needs we have.
There really is no substitute for Jesus
when it comes to fixing the various
‘leaks’ in our life - so please don’t just
be satisfied with a bucket!

KIDSGAMES
Last week Berowra Community Centre was bursting at the seams as
200 children and over 60 volunteer leaders, caterers & helpers joined
for yet another week of fun, food and learning more about our great
big God. Whilst the majority of children came from Berowra, others
travelled from Wendoree Park, Mooney Mooney, Brooklyn, Cowan and
Mt Kuring-gai.
KidsGames, now in its 11th year, has grown successively. KidsGames organiser
AJ Blair from St Marks Anglican said, “The week long programme was a great
combination of games, songs, puppet shows, craft, sports, food and Bible
Stories. The holiday activity is so appealing that this year there were over 60
children on the waiting list after registration had closed.”
This year’s theme was based on the children’s movie Finding Nemo. The talks
demonstrated the similarity in the relationship between Nemo and his father
Marlin, and that of us and our Heavenly Father. Nemo turned his back on his
father but Marlin went to incredible lengths to get his son back. The same can
be seen in that we all have turned from God, but he wants each one of us
back so badly that he sent his only Son Jesus to take our punishment so we can
be right with him. It’s was great message and a great week.

The marriage of a
beautiful Princess
and a Super Hero
took place on the
12th May 2012.
The stunning couple was
SHARNA HUETT and CONDY KWAN.
Major Lindsay Smith from the Salvation Army
performed the wedding ceremony at the
Hornsby Citadel.
The bride’s attendants were Emma Tuyau,
Amarni Huett-Akau and Natalie Slyney.
The groom was attended by Donny Kwan,
Lachlan Liao and Bevan Shearer.
A reception was held at Springfield
House, Dural for 100 guests. The couple
honeymooned in Hawaii, Vietnam and
Hong Kong.
Both families wish them a long and happy
life together.

He was also involved with Rotary

Fellows Award.
Harry’s community service
developed early. He was a
foundation member of Harbord
Diggers Club and Warringah Junior
Rugby Union Club. He believed that
you learned lessons of life
from team sports.
Harry quickly became involved in
Berowra Community from 1959,
joining Berowra RSL SB, Berowra
Cricket Club and Berowra Soccer
Club. He became ‘All Age’ Soccer
Team Manager, Secretary of the
soccer club during its greatest
expansion period. He was also
President, Sect-Mgr, Life Member
and Patron of the Berowra Bowling
Club.
Harry loved the community spirit of
Berowra and gave his time for any
cause to do with children. Harry
respected all and was respected
by all.
Many Berowra residents attended
the service including Sue Murray
and Anita Doherty (neighbours)
who were members with Harry
of the Berowra Mixed Probus Club.
“Dad considered children to be the
hope of tomorrow and therefore
actively supported youth sports
clubs, youth bands etc. He loved
attending local schools to tell
pupils about ANZAC, WW1
and WW2 history,” said Ian.
In 2010 as a result of his active
support for Legacy, Harry was
honoured with the title ‘Friend
of Legacy’.
“Harry did wonderful work for

to Legacy by Murray Bolan,
Pres Berowra RSL Club and Bob
Dobson, Pres Berowra RSL SB.
This duty had normally been
carried out by Harry in the past.
“Harry was a life member of the
RSL of Australia and President
of the Berowra RSL SB when
the present club building was
built in 1961. He carried out
his duties with diligence and
dedication,” said Bob Dobson
of Mt Kuring-gai, Pres Berowra
RSL SB.
Harry treated his RSL mates Bill
Foster and Jim Maguire like
brothers. Sadly Bill passed away
shortly afterwards on the night
of Thursday 19 July.
Our local politicians also
attended: Matt Kean our State
MP for Hornsby and Philip
Ruddock our Federal MP for
Berowra attended the funeral.
At the funeral the song recorded
by Frank Sinatra ‘I did it My
Way’ was played during the
flower laying by the family
The funeral service concluded
with the WW2 song ‘We’ll Meet
Again’ recorded by Vera Lynn
(born Vera Margaret Welch).
“Harry was of the generation that
saved the world for our children.
He was an ordinary man in an
extraordinary generation, the likes that
we will never see again,” said Ian.
Yes, Harry was of an era that many
today cannot comprehend. He grew
up in the Great Depression, WW2
and the hard times of the 1950s.
Harry was a product of history and
his time. He was an eye-witness to
Australia’s major events of the 20th
Century.
The funeral service was led by Father
Frank Vaughan Rtd who was for many
years the parish priest at the Queen of
Peace Catholic Church Normanhurst.
The service was provided by Albert &
Meyer of Thornleigh.
The Fox family would like to sincerely
thank all for the love, care and
support shown by your kind gestures
of sympathy.
