1.4 Overview of this Thesis
The thesis started by introducing the topic with attention to the relevance the
topic has in today’s society. It also presents the vision that this thesis started
with before the dictates of reality reduced its scope. It then presented the goals
of the thesis.
The next chapter is titled the technology review. It takes a detailed look at the
various existing technologies that are used for power line communications
within the home. These technologies are reviewed with attention to their
suitability for use in a new home automation system.
Following this chapter are the specifications for the adapter that will be
constructed. These specifications are taken from a high level. Chapters Four and
Five then look in detail at the hardware and software that was chosen to
implement the adapter, as well as the decisions behind the choices.
Chapter Six describes the results that were obtained from the product and how
they met the design specifications. The following chapter then discusses the
design process with respect to how the student followed engineering practice.
Possible future direction and improvements to the adapter are also discussed in
that Chapter. Lastly Chapter Eight presents the conclusions that were drawn
from this thesis.
