Milling MachineGear SetupsThe router milling machine allows for sixdifferent gear setups to create spiral patterns(like flutes and reeds). Depending on thesetup, the gear ratio, and therefore the spacingof the spirals changes. The direction ofthe spiral depends on whether one or twogears are used to connect the drive gear andmain gears, as you can see in the drawingsbelow and on the following page. Each set of drawings below shows thegear setup and resulting spiral pattern. Youcan use the information to determine whatwill work best for the type of bit you’reusing. It’s always good idea to try out differentgear setups and bit combinations ona practice blank to determine the best spacingand number of spirals.Over time, you’ll develop a sense for thenumber of spirals you can use in a designdepending on the gear ratio and the size ofthe bit (or a portion of a bit) you use.SINGLESPIRALPATTERNFOURCOMPLETESPIRALPATTERNS{ Spiral Pattern. Each specific gear setup results in a particularspiral spacing (left example). The indexing wheel ensures that spirals areevenly spaced for a consistent look once they’re complete (right example).10-20GEARINSIDE END VIEWA1-8 GEARRATIO1%/8OUTSIDE END VIEW10-30GEARB1-12 GEARRATIO2#/8ShopNotes No. 115 Page 6 of 7 ©2010 August Home Publishing.
