Thesynchronous belt cord is made upof a number of small fiber strandstwisted together. These strandscan be twisted either clockwise orcounterclockwise. The two twistdirections are referred to as “S”twist and “Z” twist. Most synchronousbelts are made with both "S”and "Z" twist cord to minimize belttracking forces on the pulleyflanges. When necessary, the lateralmovement of a belt can bepre-determined, if the direction ofrotation is constant (non-reversingdrives).A good example of this is Fin-FanDrives. Because the fin-fan drivehas a vertical shaft, the belt is builtwith Z twist construction only. Thisgives the belt an upward directionof lateral movement.
