Rock tombsthat belong to Pontus Kings who managed <strong>Amasya</strong> as capital from 333 B.C. to26 B.C. are decorated with carvings on the limestone rocks over the southernbase of Mt. Harşena. There are roads and stairs carved on rocks betweenthe tombs to which one can get in by passing through the narrow streets ofHatuniye District and a railroad. The biggest of the Kings’ Rock Tombs is thelast tomb on the west that can be reached through stairs. The height of thiscave is 15 m, its width is 8 m and depth is 6 m. The entrance of the sepultureis higher than the gates to the other tombs. You must see the cave named“Great King Tomb.”Kings’ Rock Tombs were also used as prisons and punishment arenas in someperiods. For instance, Mithridates VI imprisoned Roman ambassadors whoraised difficulties during peace meetings in the tomb which is right over therailway gate.Today, these tombs are important historic relics. If you ever to come to<strong>Amasya</strong>, you should visit and take a photo of these caverns, although they aremostly ruined but still have a magnificent outlook.You should visit this dreamy city of Western Anatolia which is as beautiful asits apples are delicious as soon as possible.
