1997 FOOTBALL COACH OF THE YEARMARK KOOLSpearfishThe strengths and talents of the Spearfish Spartan footballteam was superbly emphasized when they edged an outstandingBrandon Valley team in the Class llAA playofffinale in November. Spearfish ended their year with only oneloss in their twelve starts, that to the top-rated Great Falls,Montana 'team.The happy and modest Kool was quick to credit hiscoaching staff for his honor as Coach of the Year. "You're onlyas good as the people around you," he said.


<strong>1998</strong> BOYS CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEARFORREST FLAAGENRapid City StevensAlthough the Rapid City Stevens Raiders had many distractionsduring the season, coach Fony Flaagen finally gothis entire team together for the State AA Championship inPierre, and they responded by claiming their third straightClass AA title. It was the sixth state cross country gold forStevens."Getting the team together was a task," Flaagen said. "Wenever had our full team on the course at the same time duringthe season until the state meet."


1997 GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEARJEFF SYLLJAASENGa--+sonJeff Sylliaasen has worked hkd to keep a girls' crosscountry program on top in Garretson, and has continued tostay competitive over the years. This year his girls climaxed asuccessful season with a strong sixth-place showing at thehotly contested Class A state meet in Pierre."Hard work by our girls has been our key," saidSylliaasen.


1997 GI= BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEARNEIL GOTERWagnerNeil Goter has seen his Wagner girls move from a discouraging1-18 record to an undefeated state championshipin just four years. "I saw a light at the end of the tunnel," hesaid, regarding the 1994 season. "We have some talentedyoung girls, and it has been very rewarding to watch theirprogress each year."His Red Raiders were ranked at or near the top by thestate's sportswriters throughout the season, and provedthem right with an impressive tournament showing.


<strong>1998</strong> GYMNASTICS COACH OF THE YEARSUSAN HEITMANNBrittonThe Britton High School gymnastics program has been apower in the Northeast Conference for 21 years - all underthe guidance of one of the state's pioneer coaches, SusanHeitmann. The Braves have won three consecutive runneruptrophies in the state Class A division. They also were the conferenceand regional winners in those years. They own nineregional titles since the 1981-82 season."We have been pretty consistent through the years,"Heitmann said. "I try to get the kids to do the best they canand enjoy it."


<strong>1998</strong> VOLLEYBALL COACH OF THE YEARJEFF SKATRUDVermillionIn only his third year as a member of the Vermillion HighSchool staff, John Skatrud led his Tanagers to the state ClassA volleyball championship to cap a 34-2 season. Skatrud, anAugustana graduate who decided to pursue a coaching careermidway through his college years, commented, 'This is anhonor for the entire team and all of the coaches involved. Wehad an intelligent group of girls, and that makes coachingeasier."In one year at Canton and three in Vermillion, Skatrudhas compiled a .741 win-loss average.


<strong>1998</strong> WRESTLING COACH OF THE YEARBRAD KELVINGTONHarrisburgThe Harrisburg wrestling team has dominated the BigSioux Conference since coach Brad Kelvington got his programunderway. He arrived in 1993 after assisting inwrestling and football for two years at Vermillion High School.A graduate of Southwest State in Marshall, Minnesota,Kelvington's teams moved up the rankings until they hit thetop with conference, district and regional titles in 1997. Thisyear they took the state Class A title after an exciting battlewith a strong Bon Homme team.


<strong>1998</strong> BOYS BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEARBRAD 273ORSONBrandon ValleyBrad Thorson's third year as the head basketballcoach of the Brandon Valley Lynx would be hard to duplicate.But the Canton native led his team through an evenbetter season in 1997-98. The Lynx repeated as EasternSouth Dakota champions in a highly competitive field,with two wins over the favored Mitchell Kernels during theregular season highlighting the route. Then Thorson'steam made it to the state meet with a convincing District2AA championship, their second in a row.In an exciting climax, the Lynx outclasses the field inthe State AA tournament, turning back fine teams to winthe crown. Thorson was named the Region Five Coach ofthe Year in 1997 and <strong>1998</strong>.


<strong>1998</strong> GIFUS TRACK COACH OF THE YEARNORB REUERFaulktonNorb Reuer's Faukton team won the State B Girls' TrackChampionship this past May, and he has been selected asthe Girls' Track Coach of the Year. The Faulkton girls alsowon the championship in 1995 and placed second in 1996.Prior to coming to Faulkton, Reuer coached at WhiteRiver. There he guided the girls' track team to a state title in1976 and a second place finish in 1977. Norb has beencoaching for 23 years.


<strong>1998</strong> BOYS TRACK COACH OF THE YEARVIC GODFREYWatertownFor the first time since 1930, the Watertown Arrowsstand at the pinnacle of boys' track and field. For guiding theArrows to the top, veteran coach Vic Godfrey has been namedBoys Track Coach of the Year.This year's title followed two years when Watertown capturedrunner-up honors in the Class AA division. This is ahuge step for our program," he said. 'We had a big boost fromour near-successes the last two years. That, and my greatstaff, get the credit. We won't wait that long for anotherchampionship."


<strong>1998</strong> TENNIS COACH OF THE YEARCHRIS DUMMERMUTHSioux Falls Lincoln High SchoolChris Dummermuth coached her Lincoln High Patriots totheir fourth straight championship this past spring.For her outstanding record and for her contributions tothe state's tennis stature, Dummermuth has been namedTennis Coach of the Year. It is the second year in a row, andthe third time in the last four years that the coaches haveselected her for this honor.


<strong>1998</strong> GOLF COACH OF THE YEARJar McGLonEFlandreau Public High SchoolVeteran Jim McGlone, who announced his retirement ayear ago, finished his great career on top. His FlandreauFliers rallied from a five-stroke deficit after the opening roundand won the boys Class B golf championship by a singlestroke this past spring."This cops off my retirement year," sad McGlone. He alsoled the Fliers to championships in 1983 and 1992, takingsecond place in 1984 and 1993.


<strong>1998</strong> CHEERLEADING COACH OF THE YEARDAWN WILLIAMSHanson High, AlexandriaDawn Williams is a graduate of Custer High School andDakota Wesleyan University. For the past nineteen years, shehas been an elementary teacher. Ten years ago she begancoaching the cheerleaders at the junior high school inAlexandria.Dawn helped to organize the South Dakota CheerleadingCoaches Association and served as its president. Shecoached the South Dakota squad in the Down Under Bowl inSydney, Australia; and her Hanson squad performed at halftimeof the <strong>1998</strong> State B Tourney.


<strong>1998</strong> ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEARIN BOYS SPORTSBOB JUDSONT.F. Rigs, PierreBob Judson has been recognized for years as one ofSouth Dakota's premier basketball coaches. Judson, a graduateof Huron College, first made the headlines in 1973 whenhe guided the Huron Tigers to a State Class A Championship.He then joined an exclusive club when he took his PierreGovernors to their last state title in 1982, becoming one of avery few people who have two state titles with two differentteams.After racking up a win-loss record of 291-190 in basketball,Bob turned to track and field coaching to close out hislong career. He has assisted with the Pierre Governors fornearly twenty years, and his hurdlers are consistently amongthe state's best. An assistant for the past 33 years, Judsonnow adds this Assistant Coach of the Year plaque to his basketballlaurels.


<strong>1998</strong> ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEARIN GIRLS' SPORTSCHERYL HUDDLESTONHot SpringsCheryl Huddleston has coached in the Hot Springs systemfor twenty years and has, says head coach Dave Scott,"made outstanding contributions to our track and our crosscountry progress". Involved with coaching four state championshipteams and seven others that finished runnerup,Cheryl is the clerk of the finish at all home meets and alsoacts as the public address announcer."I'm very pleased, she said when told about her honor,"it's a nice way of being recognized because most of the timethe head coaches are the ones mentioned. When it's acrossthe whole state and all the sports, it really means a lot."


-<strong>1998</strong> ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEARIN JUNIOR HIGH/MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTSPAMELA JO HOILANDSioux FallsA 1977 graduate of Augustana College, Pamela Jo hasspent her first two decades of coaching in Sioux Falls publicschools. Her experience includes basketball, volleyball, trackand gymnastics at the seventh, eighth and ninth grade levelsin schools throughout the city.Hoiland was named one of the Outstanding YoungWomen of America in 1991 and was the state's ElementaryPhysical Education Teacher of the Year, also in 199 1. An outstandingamateur golfer, Pam was a member of the twowomanteam S.D.G.A. champions in 1989, 1991, 1992 and1993.


<strong>1998</strong> ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF THE YEARJIMHAARRapid City CentralJim Haar has been selected the Athletic Director of theYear for the second time, but the first time came when hedirected the athletic programs at Aberdeen Central. "It'sextra special when you can get the award at two schools,"admitted Haar, who has been a high school Athletic Directorfor fourteen years, the last eight in Rapid City."I try to keep the entire athletic program in perspective,"Haar said, "keeping all the programs on an even keel andbeing as fair as I can be regardless of gender."Haar spent fifteen years as a successful high schoolcoach before going into the administrative end. His dutieshave included heading the home committee in basketball,track, cross country, wrestling, golf, and volleyball statetournaments.


<strong>1998</strong> OFFICIAL OF THE YEARW7ULtWl "BUCK TIMMATSMitchellTimmins is a 1966 graduate of Mitchell High School anda 1971 graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University. He taughtfive years at Avon and since 1976 has been at Parkston HighSchool. During his career Buck has coached boys' and girls'basketball, football, track and cross country.Buck has been involved in South Dakota high school athletics,as a coach and an official, for some twenty years. Hehas officiated football and basketball since 1974. He hasworked numerous state basketball tournaments, both boys'and girls'. Buck has also worked high school football playoffsevery season since the playoff inception, including severalstate championship games.


<strong>1998</strong> SPORTSWRITER OF THE YEARROGER TOLANDRapid CityRoger Toland, who has been a member of the Rapid CityJournal sports staff for 33 years, has been named as thestate's Sportswriter of the Year. It is the second time he hasbeen so honored.Roger's invaluable contributions to South Dakota sportsinclude his weekly ratings of the state's volleyball, wrestling,and girls' basketball teams. The in-depth results of track andfield teams, the timely records of football, basketball andwrestling teams and individuals are widely read and amazinglyaccurate.He has been honored by his peers as the state's winnerfor the National Association of Sportswriters andSportscasters, and by the state activities association.


<strong>1998</strong> DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDGwen for outstanding contributions to hgh school athletics anddedication to the hghest and best in hgh school athletics.JUDEAN SCHWLNGERWatertownJudean Schwinger, who coached and taught for 40 yearsbefore retiring, has helped the Watertown area athletic programsin many ways, and continues to do so in his retirement.He has coached junior high football and basketball, hasworked as a wrestling, track and basketball scorer for over 30years, and has been a member of the Arrow football chaingang for over 35 years. A Northern State alum, Judean hasnever asked for any recognition for himself, but enjoys watchingyoung high school athletes perform.

He has been the official Team Hostand the supervisor of student managers in each basketballtournament and has been the public address announcer foreach state wrestling, gymnastics and volleyball tournamentheld there since 1970.Doc has acted as the equipment manager and trainer forthe Rapid City Stevens Raiders for 28 years.
