Littleton’s Illustrated Guide toMint Marks on Regular-Issue U.S. CoinsPhiladelphia: Mint mark “P” – coinageyears 1793 to date. Since this was the firstU.S. Mint and has always been the mainfacility, most coins from historic Philadelphia have nomint mark. Exceptions are the Wartime nickels of1942-45 (shown), Anthony dollars of 1979-81, andall other Philadelphia coins after 1979 except the cent.Denver: Mint mark “D” – coinageyears 1906 to date. Establishment of aDenver Mint was the natural result of majorgold and silver discoveries in Colorado in the late 1800s.Note: Collectors should not confuse the Denver “D” oncoins 1906 to date with the “D” mint mark on goldcoins of 1838-61 struck at the shortlived Dahlonega,Georgia facility.Carson City: Mint mark “CC” – coinageyears 1870-1893. Named after the famousfrontiersman Kit Carson, this intriguingcapital city of Nevada was chosen as a mint locationbecause of its nearness to such rich silver mines as theComstock Lode of Virginia City, Nevada.Note: “C” mint mark gold coins were struck from1838-61 at Charlotte, North Carolina.San Francisco: Mint mark “S” –coinage years 1854 to 1955, 1968 todate. The mint facility in this romanticand popular West Coast city was opened shortly after the1849 gold rush in California. It was more economicalto refine and coin locally than to ship raw bullion oreall the way to Philadelphia. No “S” coins were mintedfrom 1956-67.New Orleans: Mint mark “O” – coinageyears 1838-1861, 1879 to 1909.Nicknamed the “Crescent City” for itslocation stretching around a bend in the MississippiRiver, fascinating New Orleans was the site of a branchmint which handled bullion ore from southern mines. After closure, the building lay vacant until converted toa museum and art center.About Mint Mark Punches: Until the 1990s, dies forbranch mints were hand-punched with the mint mark, and thesize and location of the mint mark varied depending on whereand how deeply the punch was impressed. Before 1900, thepunches themselves varied greatly in size. Nowadays, mintmarks are added directly to the master dies, and are transferredalong with the coin designs to the dies that are used to strike coins. For more information visit LittletonCoin.comor call 1-800-645-3122.Indian Head Cent..............................1859-1909Mint Marks 1908-1909 onlyBuffalo Nickel ......................................1913-38No coins minted 1922, 1932-33Liberty Seated Half Dime ......1837-59, 1870-72No Mint Marks 1837, 1843, 1845-47Roosevelt Dime..................................1968-DateLincoln Cent, Wheat Ears Reverse ........1909-58Jefferson Nickel ....................1938-42, 1946-67No Mint Marks 1965-67Liberty Seated Half Dime ......1860-69, 1872-73No Mint Marks 1861-62Liberty Seated Twenty Cent Piece ..........1875-78No Mint Marks 1877-78Liberty Seated Dime..............................1837-60No Mint Marks 1837, 1841, 1844, 1846-48, 1855Lincoln Cent, Memorial Reverse ......1959-2008No Mint Marks 1965-67Jefferson Nickel, Wartime Silver............1942-45Liberty Seated Dime..............................1860-91No Mint Marks 1879-83,Mint Mark above or below bow 1875Liberty Seated Quarter ..........................1838-91No Mint Marks 1838-39, 1845-46, 1848, 1863,1879-87, 1889-90Lincoln Cent, Bicentennial Reverse ............2009Jefferson Nickel ..............................1968-2003Barber Dime ....................................1892-1916Barber Quarter ................................1892-1916Lincoln Cent, Shield Reverse..............2010-Date20042005Jefferson Nickel, Westward Journey......2004-2005Mercury Dime ......................................1916-45No coins minted 1922, 1932-33Liberty Head Nickel ..........................1883-1913Mint Marks 1912 onlyJefferson Nickel, Monticello..................2006-DateRoosevelt Dime ....................................1946-64No Mint Marks 1965-67Standing Liberty Quarter ......................1916-30No Mint Marks 1916, 1921, 1925No coins minted 1922
