Highlights of the speech of MD at Business Conference 2008standing ovation.l This is a veryh i s t o r i cconferencebecause for thefirst time ourbrothers fromAfghanistanhave joined usand I will askyou to givethem al As we gather here today for AnnualConference 2008 our location itselftestifies to the fact that we are now inuncharted territory.l After many years of having ourconference in the best five star hotelsof Karachi we had to opt for this placefar away from the city on the shores ofthe Arabian Sea because times havechanged and we all have to adapt tothis change.l Our presence here affirms ourcommitment to proceed towardssuccess no matter how daunting thechange and how formidable thechallenges that face us. Indeed this isthe time to affirm once again that wewill achieve success through unchartedwaters.l Sailing through charted water youknow every landmark, every reef, andevery coral and have the maps to guideyou through the most dangerous partsof your journey.l In uncharted waters you never knowwhen a reef will confront you and whenunforeseen dangers strike you. You donot have any maps to guide you as thisis the first time anyone is undertakingthis journeyl A new democratic set up is in placeand there are new faces and newpolicies.l Not only Pakistan but the world haschanged. Financial institutions acrossthe world are tumbling, economies aregoing under, and stock exchanges arecrashingl What a coincidence that in this eraof turmoil nationally and internationallywe are also faced with basic changeswithin the companyl Siemens has realigned itself in timeto face the changing world and in thatrespect we have a head start over othercompanies. We not only divided thecompany into sectors but also in clustersand thus the entire landscape haschanged. More uncharted waters foryou to navigate.l Look at the people gathered in thisroom. Can there be a more committedgroup of people than this. You have byyour efforts changed the fortunes ofthis company and I see no reason whyyour commitment will not extend tofacing change with the same dedicationand reaching out to success throughuncharted watersl Let us use these winds of change toscale new heights and plant the flag ofsuccess on top the highest mountain.l Internal conflict is a termite that eatsaway at the very foundations of anorganization and we must avoid it allcosts.l People who disagree have anargument, but people who dissent havea quarrell A society thrives on disagreement butis killed by dissensionl I and the CFO have demonstratedover the years that we will lead fromthe front by first surrendering ourselvesto the total compliance of rules andregulationsl Our only yardstick for preference isperformance and we respect those whofollow the rules and regulations andrefrain from spreading dissent withinthe companyl As I speak of dissent and internalconflict I must refer to attitude. This isthe foundation of all our activitiesl A famous American Author has said“Ability is what you're capable of doing.Motivation determines what you do.Attitude determines how well you doit.” You can see how important attitudeis in executing your plans.l “Each time something bad happens,I can choose to be a victim or...I canchoose to learn from it.”l We know that things have changedwithin the country but there issomething that cannot be changed. Thatis our standing as the number oneengineering company in the countryand the only one that can provideanswers to the problems facing thecountry in terms of industry, energy andhealthcare.l Our global footprint and localresources cannot be matched byanother company so no matter whocomes and who goes we will alwaysremain the company of choice in thesevital sectors of our economyl This places great responsibility on ourshoulders to communicate ourcapabilities to our customers and underone Siemens concept keep our eyes andears open for any opportunity that wecan pass on to other departments in thecompanyl We have to be competitive as well andthis can only be done by following thetop+ criteria of evaluating our processesso we can give the customer maximumreturn on their investment whilemaintaining our own levels of profit.l Competition is a spirit that I cannotdenounce but when competitionbecomes self destructive and deters youfrom the bottom line of growth andprofit than it is time to sit together andwork out strategies together to beat thecompetition.l There is huge gap in supply anddemand of energy. In supply anddemand of healthcare and hugeopportunities in the industrial sectorl This is time where the fittest willsurvive and I do not mean by musclealone. Only by using your brains, working hard and building up your cashreserves can we hope to survive in thetough times ahead.l Now for the new company structure.First of all I would like to congratulateall those who have been selected forresponsibilities in sectors and clusters. This places huge responsibilities on yourshoulders to show the world thatPakistani professionals can perform onan international levell We are poised to deal with the newrealities of the world in a way that noother company can and this is the timeto forge ahead in these unchartedwaters leaving the competition farbehind groping their way and trying tofind their feet.l Siemens Pakistan is now truly aninternational company and this newscenario offers unlimited opportunitiesboth for company and personal growthl Sometimes struggles are exactly whatwe need in our life. If nature allowedus to go through our life without anyobstacles, it would cripple us. We wouldnot be as strong as what we could havebeen. And we could never fly...l My message is do not be afraid of thestruggles or obstacles that you imagineare blocking the way. Once through youwill only be stronger and moresuccessful.l I wish you every success in yourjourney to success.Siemens wins “Most Preferred Graduate Employer Award”in engineering sectorSiemens Pakistan the largest employer of Engineering Graduates in the country wonthe coveted “Most preferred Graduate Employer award in Engineering sector” byPakistan Society of Human Resource Management and judged by a neutral bodyEngage Human Resources on the basis of survey of Universities in Pakistan andEmployers. Energy Suppliers at High SeasFloating Wind Power StationsMr.Sohail Wajahat Chairs the Session on " Globalization & Regional Alliances"A view of the conventionThe “floating wind turbine” is a joint project of the Siemens Division Renewable Energy – the world market leader for offshore windpower stations – and the Norwegian energy company StatoilHydro. Since Norway’s windiest regions are often protected naturereserves, the high seas offered a viable alternative. The wind there blows more consistently and stronger than near the coast.According to calculations made by the American National Renewable Energy Laboratory the wind potential within 50 nautical milesof the U.S. coast is greater than the currently installed electrical power of all U.S. power stations – that would be more than 900GW. Wind parks at open sea, so-called offshore installations, have already existed for fifteen years. But all these installations arenear the coast because they can only be anchored to the ground in shallow waters, i.e. at a sea depth of less than 30 feet. Theprototype of the floating wind turbine should go into operation off the Norwegian coast from 2009.Electronically controlled angle adjustment of therotor bladesNorway is ideal for testing a prototype because the seabed theredrops steeply. The wind turbine is to take up a position 7.5 milesfrom land where the sea has a depth of approximately 600 feet.It is thanks to the simple anchor-steel rope structure that it canbe used at great depths. A solid pillar solution would be impossibleafter 300 feet at the deepest. “We hope to be able to use theconcept up to a depth of 2,100 feet,” says Henrik Stiesdal, ChiefTechnology Officer (CTO) at Siemens in Brande, Denmark. Toprevent the wind turbine from tipping too strongly and becomingunstable in rough seas, Stiesdal and his team are installing an electronic control which allowsadjusting the angle of the rotor blades and the whole air flow of the turbine. The wind stationcan then compensate the rocking itself. The electricity is transported by an underwater cable.Principle of the Drilling Rig for Offshore Wind StationsUnderwater floating concrete-steel structureIn the Hywind prototype StatoilHydro relies on the “spar buoy” concept,an underwater floating structure of steel and concrete with ballasttanks – a method which has been used for years for floating offshorerigs. The float, a 350 feet long steel pipe, pulls the entire structure sodeep into the water that the center of gravity is far below the surface. This prevents the wind turbine from rocking backwards and forwardsin rough seas. The center of gravity can be set exactly thanks to theballast tanks. The wind turbine is tied to anchors on the sea bed withthree flexible steel hawsers to prevent it from drifting. StatoilHydro isresponsible for the underwater part of the system, Siemens providesthe mast and turbine.Offshore Parks with up to 200 StationsEnergy for almost one million households“The potential is enormous,” says Siemens CTO Henrik Stiesdal. Up to200 stations could float in an offshore park – a park of this kind couldthen supply almost one million households with electricity. The Hywind solution is optimal for low-energy regions with littleavailable space on land but good wind conditions out at sea. Japanor the U.S. has such conditions for example. However, it will be anotherten years or so before they can be used on a large scale. The prototypemust be built and tested first.Mr.Farooq Hassan Executive Director MAP presentnga souvenir to Mr. Sohail Wajahat SiddiquiOur Managing Director Mr.Sohail WajahatH.Siddiqui was invited by the ManagementAssociation of Pakistan to chair a sessionon “Globalization & Regional Alliances”.The speakers in this most important sessionof the convention included Rishi JaitlySenior Policy Analyst, Google Inc. Immediately theauthorities isolated the problem to theAssembly line, which transported allthe packaged boxes of soap to thedelivery department. For some reason, one soap box wentthrough the assembly line empty.Management asked its engineers tosolve the problem. Post - haste, theengineers worked hard to devise an X-ray machine with high-resolutionmonitors manned by two people towatch all the soap boxes that passedthrough the line to make sure theywere not empty. No doubt, theyworked hard and they worked fast butthey spent whoopee amount to do so.But when a rank-and-file employee ina small Indian company was posedwith the same problem, he did not getinto complications of X-rays, etc butinstead came out with anothersolution. He bought a strong industrialelectric fan and pointed it at theassembly line. He switched the fan on,and as each soap box passed the fan,it simply blew the empty boxes out ofthe line.Moral of the story:Always look for simple solutions.Devise the simplest possible solutionthat solves the problem.Learn to focus on solutions not onproblems.1112

Thelost equipment is being claimed but inthe meantime 90 houses are already litand the villagers are enjoying the blessingof light for the first time in their lives. Thecompany rose to the occasion in responseto the accident and a companywide drivewas launched to collect funds for thefamily of the driver. The selected village Butnara is even moredifficult to approach than the previousvillage Sharda Maidan and it was again avery difficult task to get all the equipmentto the village. The effort was worth it asthe smiles and jubilation on the faces ofthe villagers testifies.New computer tomographcuts radiation exposureSiemens is launching a new computer tomograph (CT) thatis faster than all other such scanners and needs only afraction of the radiation dosage previously needed to makeimages. The new CT scanner — the Somatom DefinitionFlash — is soon to be unveiled in Chicago at the world’slargest radiologists’ convention. The system uses anenhanced version of Siemens dual source technology, inwhich two X-ray tubes rotate around a patient’s bodysimultaneously. The new CT scanner will become availableon the market in early 2009.The Somatom Definition Flash substantially reduces examination times. It can scan the thorax in about 0.6 seconds, for example, which means patients no longer have to hold their breaths while sharp images are being made oftheir hearts. What’s more, the device generates less than one millisievert (mSv) of radiation during such a heartscan, compared to the usual effective dosage of between eight and 40 mSv. The new system’s radiation levels arethus lower than those of a heart catheter examination, which makes it possible to use computer tomography forroutine cardiological examinations. The X-ray detector system is arranged around the scanner’s opening. The detector system, or “gantry,” rotates onits axis at the record-setting rate of just 0.28 seconds, enabling the device to achieve unprecedented scan speedsof up to 43 centimeters per second, as well as a temporal resolution of 75 milliseconds. This allows the patient to be moved through the CT tunnel twice as fast as in any conventional scanner. As a result,a person two meters tall can be scanned in less than five seconds. Full-body examinations previously took morethan ten minutes from the time the patient was prepared for the procedure to the diagnosis. The higher scan speedalso offers advantages for emergency care, given that until now doctors under time pressure in such cases frequentlyhave had to dispense with CT scans. In addition, it is no longer necessary for children to take tranquilizers beforebeing scanned because they no longer have to lie still for as long as wasrequired in previous systems.Another new technical development for keeping radiation exposure to a minimum is an application called X-CARE.It is the first CT scanning system that can selectively reduce radiation exposure to sensitive areas, such as women’sbreasts. It does this by switching off the X-ray emitters whenever the sensitive body parts would be exposed tothe most radiation during a rotation. This enables the application to reduce by up to 40 percent the radiation thatspecific areas of the body are exposed to.Recently in Karachi / Dubai a WCP QuickScan Assessment was conducted. ThePakistan E T project procurementorganization is situated in Karachi as wellas in Dubai, so the assessment wasconducted in both locations by a teamconsisting of Karl-Heinz Pauly (assessor)and Julia Probst (co-assessor).The assessment resulted in apresentation to the Karachimanagement, showing a continuousSurprise Birthday PartyforMajor Zuberidevelopment of the procurementorganization led by Mr. SaleemMandviwalla during the last 2 years, coming from classification "sub-standard"to "standard" with a clear tendencytowards "professional".GRID a journey for insight:My experience at a learning sessionby Imran Qasim, BU TRIt was a very exciting experience; I can summarize what we learned as;One should be truthful to oneself and try to come out of self deception, shift the focusin the professional affairs from ‘who is right’ to ‘what is right’ and finally use ‘critique’not ‘criticism’ to bring out best of best in any given team. The employees of SSD decided to give a surprise Birthday party to Major(Retd) Aman Zuberi. From SSD Mr. Ameen Imtiaz leading the organizationsecretly called all the guests and instructed them to assemble in the boardroom. Major Zuberi was than invited on some pretext and arrived to a showerof congratulations by all those present. As expected he refused to reveal thelandmark he had achieved that day.The above is on the learning to which I was exposed to during the seminar called‘Leadership GRID Seminar’ organized by Pakistan society of Training and development,10-14 November, 2008. My colleague Mr. Wasi ul Haque also participated in the seminarbesides there were 25 other participants from different organizations. It was a selflearning process where the seminar coordinator clarified the matters as they arose andexplained how to carry out different exercises, otherwise we had to work on our ownand learn from our working.Participants of GRID Seminar13 14

The delegates arrived and were given sailor’s caps and scarveshighlighting the theme “Success through uncharted waters”. The MD and heads of sectorswere given Captain’s caps to demonstrate their role in leading their teams. One of the aims of the get together dinner is providing an opportunity to delegatesfor networking and a chance to exchange ideas. After an hour of mutual exchangeof ideas a play was staged by the “Black Fish Comedy Group” followed by dinner. Here are some glimpses of this event.and enabled participants to know Siemens Pakistan portfolio in acongenial environment and to share their ideas and experiences. The tool which was used for the above purpose was “Siemens inPakistan” presentation, developed by Team Strategic BusinessDevelopment. Through this presentation the participants were briefedabout Siemens Pakistan’s history, progress, successes, products &services offering, solutions capabilities, answer to question “WhySiemens?” and role as a responsible corporate citizen. So far, sessions for A&D and PTD Division have been conducted andthe response from the attendees was extremely overwhelming interms of numbers as well as participation during the sessions. Inaugural Address by MD atBusiness Conference 2008Dear Delegates,This is a very historic conference because for the first time ourbrothers fromAfghanistan havejoined us and I willask you to give thema standing ovation. As we gather heretoday for AnnualConference 2008our location itselftestifies to the factthat we are now inuncharteredterritory. After many years of having our conference in the bestfive star hotels of Karachi we had to opt for this place far awayfrom the city on the shores of the Arabian Sea because timeshave changed and we all have to adapt to this change. We could have just postponed the conference due to securityconcerns but that would have been accepting defeat andwithdrawing from our commitment. Our presence here affirms ourcommitment to proceed towardssuccess no matter how daunting thechange and how formidable thechallenges that face us. Indeed this isthe time to affirm once again that wewill achieve success through unchartedwaters. Many of you are wondering about thetheme so just let me give you a brief.Uncharted waters signify new groundor places that we have never visited before. This is the symbolof changing circumstances. Sailing through charted water youknow every landmark, every reef, and every coral and havethe maps to guide you through the most dangerous parts ofyour journey. In uncharted waters you never know when a reefwill confront you and when unforeseen dangers strike you.You do not have any maps to guide you as this is the first timeanyone is undertaking this journey. How does such a scenariofit our circumstances? Let us just look at what has happenedsince we last met at that really historic conference in Marriottin 2007.We were gliding along smoothly knowing exactly what to expectfrom a government that we had known for eight years and werewell aware of its policies. Now there is drastic change with allthe old faces and their policies gone out of the window. A newdemocratic set up is in place and there are new faces and newpolicies. An unfortunate part of any change in Pakistan is thefact that the new arrivals discard everything from the old setup. The slate is wiped clean and we start all over again. We haveto face it & use this change as an opportunity as we have doneso many times in the more than sixty years of our history. Not only Pakistan but the world has changed. Financialinstitutions across the world are tumbling, economies are goingunder, and stock exchanges are crashing. We are standing inthe middle of a financial earthquake the likes of which we havenot seen in our life time. What a coincidence that in this eraof turmoil nationally and internationally we are also faced withbasic changes within the company. You must be proud of thefact that Siemens Pakistan has now become a truly globalplayer with many of its official’s assigned internationalassignments looking after whole clusters as opposed to justone country.Siemens has realigned itself in time to face the changing worldand in that respect we have a head start over other companies. We not only divided the company into sectors but also inclusters and thus the entire landscape has changed. Moreuncharted waters for you to navigate. Now to the task at hand which is how to navigate to successthrough uncharted waters. It was Margaret Mead well knownwriter who said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the onlything that ever has”.Now look at the people gathered in this room. Can there be amore committed group of people than this. You have by yourefforts changed the fortunes of this company and I see noreason why your commitment will not extend to facing changewith the same dedication and reaching out to success throughuncharted waters. We all know the famous couplet by AllamaIqbal which translated in English says “Do not fear the fury ofthe wind O Falcon; it blows only tofly you to greater heights”.Let us use these winds of change toscale new heights and plant the flagof success on top the highestmountain. While I am confident thatwe will reach success through theseuncharted waters I would like towarn you of the rocks that mightimpede your progress. Internalconflict is a termite that eats awayat the very foundations of anorganization and we must avoid itall costs. I speak of dissent not disagreement because there isa vast difference between the two. People who disagree havean argument, but people who dissent have a quarrel. Peoplemay disagree and both may count themselves in the majority. But a person who dissents is by definition in a minority.A society thrives on disagreement but is killed by dissension.Mostly the seeds of dissention are born in an over inflated ego.The idea that I am more equal than others and rules andregulations are not meant for me. I and the CFO havedemonstrated over the years that we will lead from the frontby first surrendering ourselves to the total compliance of rulesand regulations and that we have no preference for any blueeyed boys. Our only yardstick for preference is performanceand we respect those who follow the rules and regulations andrefrain from spreading dissent within the company. You know how much time of an organization is wasted incoping with dissent? The endless emails trying to prove yourpoint and belittle your adversaries, hours of meetings to sortout dissent and than the sulking that eats away at yourcreativity and stops you from contributing your maximum tocompany results. The schemes and ploys to prove to themanagement that you were right in the first place. So muchenergy wasted in undermining the company that you couldhave instead used to build it. Avoid dissent and internal conflictlike the plague. The unseen rock of dissent in these uncharted waters is sure tobore holes in our ship of success. As I speak of dissent and internalconflict I must refer to attitude. This is the foundation of all ouractivities. This is the rock on which we can either tie our anchoron reaching our destination or perish at the high seas by the holeit can inflict on our ship of success. I told you some years ago ofa survey in which several countries were compared and the reasonfor the success of some countries was attributed to the attitudeof the people. Some of these countries had better data in their favor but theycould not progress as well as other countries due to the attitudeof their people. This is the same for companies who succeed orfail based on the attitude of their employees. A famous AmericanAuthor has said “Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivationdetermines what you do. Attitude determines how well you doit.” You can see how important is attitude in executing your plans.Attitude is the energy that flows through every member of a Teamthat leads them to greatness.Nothing of lasting value can be achieved without a positive mentalattitude. The difference between the public and private sector isthat of attitude. Most government officials are there to stop thingsfrom happening while private sector employees go out of the wayto allow things to happen and achievesuccess for themselves and theircompanies. Adopt a positive approachand utilize change for success. In a veryfamous story about attitude the authorputs it very clearly “Each time somethingbad happens, I can choose to be a victimor...I can choose to learn from it.”The problem is that not many peoplethink that way and instead of learningthey try to gain sympathy by becominga victim of circumstances. There can beno sympathy for those who refuse tolearn from their experiences and continue to repeat the samemistakes. Now to the theme of the conference and the unchartedscene through which we have to negotiate our way to success.Let us first look at the scenario internally. We know that thingshave changed within the country but there is something thatcannot be changed. And that is our standing as the number one engineering companyin the country and the only one that can provide answers to theproblems facing the country in terms of industry, energy andhealthcare. Our global footprint and local resources cannot bematched by another company so no matter who comes and whogoes we will always remain the company of choice in these vitalsectors of our economy. By this I am not asking you to sit backand relax. On the other hand this places great responsibility on our shouldersto communicate our capabilities to our customers and under oneSiemens concept keep our eyes and ears open for any opportunitythat we can pass on to other departments in the company. Wemight be on top but in the tough economic conditions that weare facing this alone will not be enough. We have to be competitiveas well and this can only be done by following the top+ criteria ofevaluating our processes so we can give the customer maximumreturn on their investment while maintaining our own levels ofprofit. This also means working closely with each other providing eachother competitive prices that jointly make us the company ofchoice for customers. Competition is a spirit that I cannot denouncebut when competition becomes self destructive and deters youfrom the bottom line of growth and profit than it is time to sittogether and work out strategies together to beat the competition. The economic meltdown globally also represents a new scenariobut it should not pose a great threat to Pakistan because we arenot major exporters like China and India. If anything this will bringdown our import bill as with huge quantities of supplies and fewbuyers prices of many goods will become significantly lower inthe international market. We should not believe the prophets ofgloom and doom and instead concentrate on the new opportunitiesthat the zeal of a new government to perform is sure to throw upin the market place. There is huge gap in supply and demand ofenergy. In supply and demand of healthcare and huge opportunitiesin the industrial sector, I see a glorious future if we just put ourheads down and grab the opportunities that are sure to materializein the coming days. This does not mean that international financialsituation will not have any affect on our operations. We now livein the global village and cannot escape the affects of this globaldownturn. The banks with which we deal are already underpressure and the easy financing available just six months back isnow history. We have to ensure that we recover ourdues urgently from those who owe usbecause as time passes and conditionsbecome tougher it will be harder for youto recover your money. Act now with amissionary zeal and go the extra mileto get your money otherwise we will becaught in a liquidity crunch with no helpfrom the banks who themselves arehaving a hard time surviving thiseconomic chaos. This is time where thefittest will survive and I do not mean bymuscle alone. Only by using your brains, working hard and building up your cashreserves can we hope to survive in the tough times ahead. Please do not underestimate the seriousness of the situation anddo not waste a moment in taking the necessary step. As we facethis enormous crisis I am reminded of the recent speech by thePresident elect of USA Mr. Obama who infused new life in hiscampaign by using just three words “YES WE CAN”. These are themost important words of this century and we should all say toourselves every day “Yes we can” and do whatever is required toshield ourselves from the ill effects of the present economicscenario. Now for the new company structure. First of all I would liketo congratulate all those who have been selected forresponsibilities in sectors and clusters. This places hugeresponsibilities on your shoulders to show the world thatPakistani professionals can perform on an international level.I am proud of the fact that already there is acclaim of servicesprovided by our people. And I want this to continue and everyone to put in their bestefforts for the sake of the company and the country. We are very fortunate that even before the present global economicturmoil our company had the foresight to restructure Siemens sothat today we are way ahead of our competitors and should takeadvantage of this lead and not allow our competitors to catch upwith us. We are poised to deal with the new realities of the worldin a way that no other company can and this is the time to forgeahead in these uncharted waters leaving the competition far21 22

ehind groping their way and trying to find their feet.Siemens Pakistan is now truly an international companyand this new scenario offers unlimited opportunitiesboth for company and personal growth. The sky is thelimit as far we are concerned and it is time to plant yourfeet firmly on the ground and forge ahead takingadvantage of every opportunity that presents itself inthese uncharted waters. Let me leave you with a storythat will give us an insight into the true meaning ofstruggle and how obstacles can sometimes be the pathto success.A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a smallopening appeared; he sat and watched the butterfly forseveral hours as it struggled to force its body throughthat little hole. Then it seemed to stop making anyprogress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it couldand it could go no farther. Then the man decided to help the butterfly, so he tooka pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit ofthe cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But ithad a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.Interview with Mansoor IqbalThe man continued to watch the butterfly because heexpected that, at any moment, the wings would enlargeand expand to be able to support the body, which wouldcontract in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterflyspent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollenbody and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly. What the man in his kindness and haste did not understandwas that the restricting cocoon and the struggle wererequired for the butterfly. To get through the tiny openingwere nature's way of forcing fluid from the body of thebutterfly into its wings, so that it would be ready for flightonce it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life.If nature allowed us to go through our life without anyobstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strongas what we could have been. And we could never fly.My message is do not be afraid of the struggles orobstacles that you imagine are blocking the way. Oncethrough you will only be stronger and more successful.I wish you every success in your journey to success.THANK YOU!!In a series in Siemens World entitled “Environmental protection in practice anInterview of our head of Corporate Quality and Process Excellence ManagementMr.Mansoor Iqbal was published recently. Here is the text of that interview. As part of our "Green Week" series, we will be featuring employees from differentcountries who are engaged mainly in the environmental protection field. We must be aggressive in highlightingthe particular significance of our work on environmental protection at every levelof society and management.SiemensWorld: And what have you been able to achieve to date?Iqbal Khan: Our commitment is evidenced by the fact that over the last four yearswe have received the Annual Environment Excellence Award of the National Forumfor the Environment and Health (NFEH), in recognition of exceptional achievementsin the field of environmental protection. The company introduced itsfirst Simatic controller at the Paris machinetools fair in 1958. It was a hard-wiredelectronic system for controlling andregulating small sub-tasks on productionlines.Within these modules, logical functions werecombined with output amplifiers so thatcontactors, solenoid valves or other controlelements could be activated with them. Ascontrol elements, the company relied ontransistors, a relatively new invention at thattime. These were small and wear-resistantand were therefore primarily used inapplications requiring a high level of reliability:in transformer substations and power plants. The early 1970s marked the beginning ofthe transition from hard-wired to memoryprogramming. The first SPS, Simatic S3, stillconsisted of a whole cabinet full of memoryand electronic components. But thedevelopment of microelectronic systemsproceeded at such a rapid pace that memorystorage and logic devices kept getting smallerand smaller. It was a little less than 30 yearsago that Siemens automation technologyachieved its definitive breakthrough in themarket, with the Simatic S5 family. In 1996 there followed the Simatic S7 andthe next leap in technology — the shift fromSPS to totally integrated automation, whichfocuses on integrated solutions rather thanthe performance features of individualdevices. At the same time, this also enabledSiemens to lay the foundation for anintegration of process control technologyinto the Simatic world — with the SIMATICPCS 7 process control system, which is basedon the same Simatic technology.Today, companies in many sectors — first andforemost in the automotive industry — areworking to implement the “digital factory,” inwhich all processes mesh together seamlessly.Following virtual production planning in the1990s, one trend today is virtualcommissioning of entire production lines.Given these developments, Siemens is workingintensively on integrating the softwarecompany UGS, now Siemens PLM Software, into its existing industrial automation activities.will be advance which will cover BA DeputyManager and BA Managers. Customer focus WorkshopOne of the most interesting events of the Business Conference 2008 was the Customer Focus Workshop in which Siemens customersfrom all sectors (Health, Energy and Industry) were invited to share the stage with Siemens Management and discuss Siemensproducts and services and how well they provided answers to their questions. The customers included Mr. Mohammad Daud Chief Engineer, Design, NTDC (Energy Sector Customer)Mr.Mohammad Yusuf ChiefOperating Officer Tabba Heart Institute (Health Care Customer), Mr. Shah Hussain Head of operation south Nokia Siemens Network(Industry Sector Customer) and Mr.Adnan Asdar CEO Multinet (Industry Sector Customer). The program was conducted by Mr.NadeemKazmi and Mr.Ishtiaq Ul Haq.There was a frank and in-depth discussion about Siemens products and services and the overall impression one got from the sessionwas that the customers were to the most part satisfied with our efforts and if there was some unresolved matter they were confidentthat it will be resolved to their satisfaction. What the customers sayDuring the recent Customer Focus session at the BusinessConference 2008 our customers had this to say about Siemensand its services and products.Mr.Mohammad DaudChief Engineer DesignNTDCI have been associated withSiemens for last twenty twoyears. And even before I hadknown Siemens from schoolage. The impression I got ofSiemens since verybeginning can be attributedto general feeling inPakistan that quality ofGerman goods is very high. The impression aboutGerman goods has alwaysbeen very good. The gentleman who laid the foundationsof Siemens Germans have every right to be proud of himbut as a human being I am also proud of him. He startedfrom a small workshop and I pay tribute to his successes. My comments on Siemens are that the words Siemens ingreen color represent quality for me. In my dealings withSiemens in last twenty two years I never had any problemwith Siemens in settling any issue with them whateverwe desired Siemens made it. I am sure this attitude fromSiemens will remain forever and our relations willstrengthen further. The range that Siemens is covering isnot covered by any of its competitors in Pakistan. Thesecompanies do not have the local manufacturing facilitiesenjoyed by Siemens. Imported products might be similarbut Siemens has promoted local manufacture and addedto GDP of country.Mr. Mohammad YusufChief Operating OfficerTabba Heart InstituteI am a professional HospitalAdministrator that is myqualification. I have been in thisfield for the last twenty fiveyears. I have been in the fieldof management for last thirtyfive years and twenty five inhealth care. Fifty percent ofequipment at Tabba HeartInstitute is from Siemens. Whenthe equipment was chosen Iwas not at Tabba but now it ismy duty to ensure that the equipment works for the end userswhich mean cardiologists and surgeons. When this equipmentwas selected we had quotation from several multinationalcompanies of various origins, Japanese, German, American andBritish. The people from Tabba were convinced by Siemens forSiemens equipment and I am happy to note that so far therehas been no negative comment about Siemens. I must tell youthat Siemens people not only helped us install Siemensequipment but also other equipment not theirs but somehowattached to their equipment. As far as my personal opinion isconcerned I have nothing negative and what I have to say aboutSiemens is very very positive. Siemens backup is excellent, I donot have superlative word to use otherwise I would have usedit. Whoever in Siemens I deal with and that includes your MD tothe junior most person in Healthcare I find very very helpful, not only helpful but the response time is so little that the timeI have been with this institution there has never been anycomplaint. Just excellent is not enough if there was a betterword I would have used that. Have looked into the possibilityof getting machines from top names but their procedures areso lengthy and they are spread out so wide that you just can’tget their attention. With Siemens if we need a part it is broughtin within days not even weeks and that is where the satisfactioncomes from. What has kept this relationship going with Siemensis their backup service. They are excellent people excellent friends.I must compliment Mr. Sohail Wajahat Siddiqui for maintaininga wonderful set of people senior engineers, junior engineers, officers, sales people they are all a good set of people. The bottomline is that we are very happy with Siemens.Mr.Adnan Asdar CEOMultinet:As this program was going onI was just recalling in how manydifferent ways I have interactedwith Siemens in past 15 or 18years. I can name a few. I havebeen a customer, I have beena contractor, I have been aconsultant to Siemens and Ihave also been a joint venturepartner with Siemens. I wouldlike to share some of myexperiences. Till about ten yearsago Siemens was regarded bythe people as just a company that supplied transformers toWAPDA, KESC and had no impact or so it was thought by thepeople. We got electricity but the brand never got down to us.Than Siemens installed signals across the country and yourmaintenance crew were visible. After the energy crunch thegenerating sets provided more exposure to Siemens in public.Than came consumer items and the brand was totally visible toconsumers. We have built five major buildings with SiemensIndustrial solutions. The ABN Amro Bank next to Marriott, TheMCB Building, The Gwadar PC a difficult undertaking done withSiemens. The performance has been exceptional. Two issues foreveryone to note. When I told these customers that Siemensshould be prequalified they all said oh Siemens will be veryexpensive. All these buildings are in private sector and the selecteddoes not have to have lowest bid but Siemens was the lowestbid. Two of the engineering institutions have taken their studentsout to these projects to show them the quality of work. Anotheraspect just like Mr Yusuf and Mr Daud have said my level ofescalation for resolving a problem has never gone beyond fieldsupervisors. This means during these five projects I never had towrite a letter to the head office or even to line managers.Mr.Shah Hussain head ofoperations (South)Siemens Nokia:South Region Siemens NokiaNetwork: In the south regionwhere most of SiemensEquipment is installed forTelenor. The challenge was howto become partners for successof Telenor. We have 2500 siteswhere DG sets of Siemens areinstalled. It was a verychallenging task to on air 30 or35 sites a month. This was avery challenging task andSiemens was excellent with us in achieving these targets. Wereally appreciate the efforts in achieving these targets. It is notjust confined to generating sets we also have ATS panels andinfrastructure of Siemens which is a very good product and wedo not have any issue with that equipment. We had a problemat site as some equipment was not Siemens and there werefrequent burn outs but than Siemens provided a solution andnow for last three years we have no problem. This is really successof Siemens. I have no hesitation in saying Siemens is a very goodpartner and very good company.25 26

Twelve outstanding inventors honoredSiemens increases number of patents by 10% to 55,000Expressive HandsWe do not really know the conversation but we can always make a wild guessIn fiscal 2008, Siemens increased the total number of patents it has received by 10% to 55,000. In the same period, the company’s 32,500R&D employees filed some 8,200 invention disclosures, corresponding to 37 inventions per working day. These invention disclosuressubsequently generated 5,000 patent applications. On December 1, 2008, Peter Löscher, CEO of Siemens AG, honored twelve outstandingemployees as “Inventors of the Year” in Munich. The award winners are responsible for a total of around 800 patents. Their research coversthe full range of the company’s business activities, with efficient power generation and environment protection as one of the main topics– six of the twelve inventors work in these fields. The spectrum of award-winning inventions ranges from gearless wind turbines, newalloys for high-temperature-resistant turbine blades and better combustion in gas heating, to reduced radiation dose levels in computertomography. “Innovation is about providing the right answers to the most pressing questions of our time,” said Siemens CEO Peter Löscher.“Our 430,000 employees worldwide – and especially our award-winning inventors – help our customers to speed up their productionprocesses and reduce their costs, while at the same time saving resources.” The “Inventors of the Year” award has been presented annuallyto twelve Siemens R&D employees since 1995. “Our success is based on efficient innovation management. This can only be achievedwhen our innovation strategy is part of our business strategy and is geared toward attractive markets with long-term growth prospects,”said Professor Hermann Requardt, CTO of Siemens and CEO of the Healthcare Sector. “Siemens has always seen itself as a trendsetterthat combines business strength with technological strength.“ “The company’s central R&D department, Corporate Technology producesan above-average proportion of initial registrations,” said Dr. Winfried Büttner, head of Siemens’ patent department. The Industry Sectoris particularly active in the patent area and has generated nearly 50% of all the company’s patents.Let us go in that directionIf the wind is not blowing how can we set sailNew poetry by Major Zuberi for Mr.HasanzadaThe 2008 Inventors of the Yearare as follows:Dr. PeterBerdelle-Hilge(55) fromKonstanz hasnoticeablysimplified andspeeded upthe sorting of large-format letters. Technical Trainee Pool – Business DevelopmentBy: Muhammad Waqas Babar, Management Trainee, SBDCertification Ceremony in DubaiProject managers in BU HSS OS were recently certified as per pm@siemens guidelines. The certificates were handed overin a simple ceremony in Dubai by the Managing Director Mr.Sohail Wajahat H.Siddiqui. Following project managers werecertified:Mr. Shah Nawaz Ahmed as Senior Project ManagerMr. Faisal Hussain as Project ManagerMr. Raza Shahid as Project ManagerMr. Abid Amin as Senior Project ManagerMr. Faisal Khan as Project ManagerIn order to qualify for this certification, candidates have to go through a series of assessment stages including qualificationtest and interview by a panel of experts including representatives of Siemens AG.“Technical Trainee Pool”; a pool of engineers where fresh graduatesof various engineering disciplines are inducted and then trained& groomed by giving exposure to Corporate as well as BusinessUnits (BUs) working environment. While working in Strategic Business Development, these traineeengineers learn the basic norms of corporate & professional lifeand also get to know about complete Siemens portfolio ofproducts, services and solutions.During the training period, trainees are also deputed to BUs;where the selection of BU is done by aligning the Trainee’sengineering discipline, aptitude, attitude, job profile and BU’scriteria. This Corporate and Business Unit working experience is a uniquecombination for the career and professional development ofthese Trainees. As a result, these Trainees serve as a pool oftrained people ready to fulfill the requirements of Business Unitsas well as for Corporate Departments. It has been one year since this idea came into existence and tillto date fourteen Trainees have been inducted out of which, fourare currently on rotation in different BUs, while seven have beensuccessfully integrated in the BUs; which in itself is an indicatorof Technical Pool’s success. However the important aspect is to maintain and sustain thissuccess, and for that one of the important parameters is to getfeedback from the direct stakeholders, which in this case are“Trainees” themselves. For this purpose, regular sessions areconducted and one of such session was conducted in March’2008 having following objectives:1. Candid feedback from Trainees about their experience, learning, overall company environment & training expectationsetc.,2. Sharing of learning and experience in particular from Traineeswho are deputed in BUs,3. Awareness of Siemens Pakistan portfolio4. Career counseling in co-ordination with HR, where requiredby Trainees. The above was achieved in a way that each Trainee gave apresentation during the session on the assigned topic. This againis part of their training; as such presentations improvecommunication skills and builds confidence at this very earlystage of their career.Feedback given by the Trainees on three specific aspects namely“Key learnings during the training”, “Future expectation from thetraining” and “Siemens as an organization” is quoted below forreaders review:Fujitsu Siemens Computers CertifiedSiemens Pakistan as FF4SAP PartnerFujitsu Siemens Computers recognized Siemens Pakistan, its corporate reseller partner, as a "Certified FF4SAP Partner".The certification was awarded after three engineers (SyedUmair, Abdus Samad and Imran Riaz) from Siemens Pakistansuccessfully completed training on the solution, makingthem the only certified partners in the region. SiemensPakistan has a long standing joint venture with FujitsuSiemens Computers that began a decade ago.Since then, Siemens Pakistan has successfully completedmany projects with the Government and private sector inPakistan. “With today's CIO's having to do more with alower budget, the cost of electricity, power and real-estaterising and the spending to deliver new services, customerswant the best solutions to help address these challengesand run their business,” said Naved Waqas, GeneralManager, Siemens Pakistan. “The decision to get trainedon this solution is clear; we put our energy where we canprovide our customers with solutions and services thathelp them to achieve their strategic goals, while providingthe best technology infrastructure to drive these businessprocesses with the highest return on investment.”Syed Umair, Abdus Samad and Imran Riaz are now amongonly 89 certified individuals for ‘FlexFrame for SAP’ (FF4SAP)worldwide. Efficient Light Sources from Semi-conductor CrystalsLEDs are very efficient and therefore environmentally friendly light sources. They provide the same luminance as light bulbs whileconsuming only a fraction of the power. The saving potentials are enormous: electric light currently accounts for 19 percent of globalpower consumption. In Asia, consumption may double over the next ten years. Developers at the Siemens subsidiary of Osram haverecently set a world record for the luminance and efficiency of white LEDs. LED open up new applications like headlightsfor cars or very bright lamps in buildings. The German Future Prize 2007 was awarded to Dr Stefan Illek and Dr Klaus Streubel from Osram and Dr Andreas Bräuer from theFraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering in Jena. They received the award in recognition of their work onthin-film technology, a new manufacturing process for ultra-efficient, long-lasting LEDs. This technology facilitates very light-intensivesemi-conductor chips and also permits their close configuration, thereby producing a larger light-emitting area.Siemens and NortelChannel partnership agreementcapabilities that make the promise of ‘Business MadeSimple’, a reality to their customers. Weare committed to introducing world-class standards and undertake the work according to schedule,” Selch said. The scope of the contract covers laying out 110kV/13.8 kV electrical substations and transmission infrastructure over the IndustrialZone, Resort Cove and Bay La Sun Village — the first integrated residential community launched in KAEC.Siemens Establishes Mobile Water Treatment Services in Middle EastSiemens Water Technologies has established its mobile water treatment solutions in the Middle East with its first installation outsideNorth America, where the company services thousands of municipal and industrial customers. Siemens will supply the system toSaudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia. The 50m3/hr system uses media filtration, followed by reverse osmosis, to treat and purify groundwaterfor use as drinking water. The mobile water treatment units began operation on June 15, 2008, and will be on site for about threeyears. Unlike other treatment systems, which require the investment of capital expense, manufacturing time, and installation, thecontainerized mobile water systems provide numerous advantages, such as rapid response for emergency or unplanned maintenance, minimal field construction costs and the flexibility to upgrade or change a treatment process if source water chemistry changes.Three Process Control Systems for Henan Yongshun AluminiumSiemens Metals Technologies has received an order from the Chinese Henan Youngshun Aluminium Co. Ltd., to supply three newprocess control systems with the associated flatness measurement and coolant sprays technology. These projects are scheduledfor completion by December 2009.The three new MT (Metals Technologies) control systems will be installed as part of the Yongshun 2009 mill expansion programme. These new process control systems will optimize production and not only contribute to the further improvement of the quality ofthe rolled products but also increase the productivity of the plants. The new MT technology will mainly be used in foil rolling mills.Over 250 MT process control systems are installed in aluminum mills worldwide.Henan Yongshun Aluminium Co. Ltd employs some 1,000 people at their production facility in Gongyi City, Henan Province. Thecompany produces not only sheets, strips, foils and coating materials but also finished products with a great processing depth fora wide range of applications. Its customers are in the domestic goods, electronics, communications and transport sectors, and thepackaging and construction industries.Global Network of InnovationEnergy-efficient Desalination TechnologySiemens is developing a new technology that consumes at least 50 percent less energyfor desalinating seawater than previous systems. The new technology will use an electricfield to remove salt from the water. Development of the system was made possible inpart through a grant from the government of Singapore. Siemens Water Technologiesestablished its worldwide headquarters for the research and development of watertechnologies in Singapore some time ago, and Siemens Corporate Technology has nowalso opened an office in the city-state.Because water covers 71 percent of the earth’s surface, it may initially seem that it isabundantly available worldwide. This is not the case, however, since more than 97percent of the earth’s water is undrinkable seawater. As a result, countries such as theUnited Arab Emirates or Singapore, use desalination plants to produce drinking water.Sensors for Improving the Air in Building InteriorsSiemens is currently developing sensors thatwill be used as sense organs in buildings.Thousands of these sensors installedthroughout a building could notify thebuilding management system of all indoorair, temperature and lighting conditions, detect gases or toxins, and even neutralizenoxious odors.Scientists at Siemens Corporate Technologyare aiming to use the small sensors to imitatenature. In the same way that the senses andnerves continuously provide the human brainwith information to enable it to make thebest-possible decisions, the processors inbuilding management systems will in thefuture receive and process the flood ofinformation produced by the sensors. On thebasis of this information, the control systemswill issue commands to innumerable subsystems, notifying them of the rooms that need to be aired because of too high CO2concentrations, for example, or in which rooms the lights can be turned off because they are unoccupied. And if there should be amusty smell in any of the rooms, the system will automatically release ozone gas to neutralize the odor molecules. In combination withoptimized control technology, the small measuring devices could save up to 30 percent of a building’s energy consumption for heating, ventilation and air conditioning.Strong MRI Scanner for Cancer ResearchOne of the world’s most powerful magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners will startup in August at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg (DKFZ). The heart ofthe machine is a 32-ton superconducting magnet, which was recently set up in a buildingspecially erected for this purpose following shipment of the part from Oxford, England. At the moment, the machine is being completed with additional components, includinga helium cooling system that lowers the temperature of the electromagnet to minus269 degrees Celsius. The magnet’s winding measures several hundred kilometers, andcurrent flows through it with no loss, generating a magnetic field strength of seventesla, about 140,000 times greater than that of the earth. By way of comparison, MRIscanners in hospitals or radiological practices achieve a maximum of three tesla.physicians in Heidelberg hope the higher field strength will help them gain new insightsinto the origins of cancer. So far, only structures larger than one millimeter have beenvisible in images of the inside of the body, but the new system makes it possible to see far smaller details. Researchers are aimingfor more than just better resolution and higher contrast, however. Other advantages of the higher field strength are much shorterscan times and the possibility of identifying the chemical composition of tissue and directly observing metabolic processes, and thusthe growth of tumors. This can be crucial for treatment of cancer patients and can furtherenhance the range of medical possibilities available.Successful Test of 800-Kilovolt TransformerA new transformer developed for one of the world’s longest and highest-rated highvoltageDC transmission systems (HVDC) has successfully completed final testing. It isthe first HVDC transformer for 800 kilovolts (kV). Today’s HVDC transmission systemsnormally operate at a peak transmission voltage of 500 kilovolts. The unit, which is thesize of a family house, is destined for China. Siemens is delivering ten of these newhigh-performance transformers for the Yunnan–Guangdong HVDC system, which frommid-2010 onward will be transmitting 5,000 megawatts (MW) of power over a distanceof 1,400 kilometers. HVDC solutions form part of Siemens’ environmental portfolio, which generated €17 billion in sales for the company last year.39 40

Knowledge ManagementRashid QutubA&D DesignIntroductionIn these modern days of technologicaladvancement, it is very important toknow “what actually we know” and beable to make maximum use of thatknowledge. This knowledge usually canbe stored in many different places suchas: databases, knowledge bases, filingcabinets & peoples' heads and aredistributed right across an organization. It is likely to happen that sometimesone part of an organization replicatesthe work of another part simply becauseit is impossible to always keep track of,& make use of, knowledge in otherparts. Hence, it is required to know:· What are knowledge assets· How to manage and make use of theseassets to get maximum return.Usually only tangible assets & resourcesare focused but the importantknowledge assets are left unmanaged.Success in an increasingly competitivemarketplace depends on the quality ofknowledge which an organizationapplies to it’s key business processes. For example the supply chain dependson knowledge of diverse areas includingraw materials, planning, manufacturingand distribution. Similarly, productdevelopment requires knowledge ofconsumer requirements, new science, new technology, marketing etc.Knowledge assets are the knowledgeregarding markets, products, technologies and organizations, that abusiness owns or needs to own andwhich enable its business processes togenerate profits, add value, etc.Knowledge management (KM) is notonly about managing these knowledgeassets but managing the processes thatact upon these assets. These processesinclude: developing knowledge;preserving knowledge; usingknowledge, and sharing knowledge. Therefore, KM involves the identificationand analysis of available and requiredknowledge assets and knowledge assetrelated processes, and the subsequentplanning and control of actions todevelop both the assets and theprocesses so as to fulfill organizationalobjectives.Knowledge and InformationIn practice, the terms information andknowledge are very often usedinterchangeably. Itis necessary todistinguishb e t w e e n'information' and'knowledge'.'Knowledge' isdefined as what we know: knowledgeinvolves the mental processes ofcomprehension, understanding andlearning that go on in the mind and onlyin the mind, however much they involveinteraction with the world outside themind, and interaction with others.Whenever we wish to express what weknow, we can only do so by utteringmessages of one kind or another - oral, written, graphic, and gestured or eventhrough 'body language'. Such messagesdo not carry 'knowledge', they constitute'information', which a knowing mindmay assimilate, understand, comprehendand incorporate into its own knowledgestructures.Tacit and Explicit knowledgeWhat is 'tacit knowledge'? 'tacit' means'hidden', tacit knowledge (tk) is hiddenknowledge, hidden even from theconsciousness of the knower. This iswhy Polanyi (1958), a chemist turnedscientist, used the phrase 'We knowmore than we can tell.' In other words,'tk' involves the process ofcomprehension, a process which is,itself, little understood. Consequently,‘tk’ is an inexpressible process thatenables an assessment of phenomenain the course of becomingknowledgeable about the world. TheJapanese, however, views it as,something not easily visible andexpressible, just like a tip of an ice berg.Something highly personal and hard toformalize, making it difficult tocommunicate or to share with others. Amaster craftsman, for example, developsa wealth of expertise “at his finger tips”after years of experience. But he is oftenunable to articulate the scientific ortechnical principles behind what heknows.Explicit knowledge can easily be“processed” by a computer, transmitted electronically, or storedin databases. The subjective and intuitive nature of‘tk’ makes it difficult to process ortransmit the acquired knowledge inany systematic or legal manner. ForTacit knowledge to be communicatedand shared within the organization, ithas to be converted into words ornumbers that anyone can understand. Why Knowledge managementThe challenge of deploying theknowledge assets of an organization tocreate competitive advantage becomesmore crucial as:1. The marketplace is increasinglycompetitive and the rate ofinnovation is rising, so thatknowledge must evolve and beassimilated at an ever faster rate.2. Corporations are organizing theirbusinesses to be focused on creatingcustomer value. There is a need toreplace the informal knowledgemanagement of the staff functionwith formal methods in customeraligned business processes.3. Competitive pressures are reducingthe size of the workforce which holdsthis knowledge.4. Knowledge takes time to experienceand acquire. Employees have less andless time for this.5. There are trends for employees toretire earlier and for increasingmobility, leading to loss ofknowledge.6. There is a need to manage increasingcomplexity as small operatingcompanies are trans-nationalsourcing operations. Organizationsneed:· to have an organization-widevocabulary to ensure that theknowledge is correctly understood;· to be able to identify, model andexplicitly represent their knowledge;· to share and re-use their knowledgeamong differing applications forvarious types of users; this impliesbeing able to share existingknowledge sources and also futureones;· to create a culture that encouragesknowledge sharing.References:1- The knowledge creating company(IKUJIRU NONANKA & HIROTAKATAKEUCHI)2- The nonsense of knowledgemanagement (T.D.WILSON)3- What is knowledge management?(REBECCA O.BARCLAY).By: Ghulam NabiSB SalesDO IT is a process for creativity. DO ITintroduces formal methods of problemdefinition and evaluation. These help youto get the best out of the creativitytechniques.DO IT is an acronym that stands for:D - Define problemO - Open mind and apply creativetechniquesI - Identify best solutionT - TransformDo ItThese stages are explained in more detailbelow.1. Define the ProblemThis section concentrates on analyzingthe problem to ensure that the correctquestion is being asked. The followingsteps will help you to do this:· Check that you are tackling theproblem, not the symptoms of theproblem. To do this, ask yourself why theproblem exists repeatedly until you get tothe root of it.· Lay out the bounds of the problem.Work out the objectives that you mustachieve and the constraints that you areoperating under.· Where a problem appears to be verylarge, break it down into smaller parts.Keep on going until each part is achievablein its own right, or needs a preciselydefined area of research to be carried out.· Summarize the problem in as concisea form as possible. Robert W. Olsensuggests that the best way to do this is towrite down a number of 2 word problemstatements and choose the best one.2. Open Mind and Apply CreativeTechniquesOnce you know the problem that youwant to solve, you are ready to startgenerating possible solutions. It is verytempting just to accept the first good ideathat you come across. If you do this, youwill miss many even better solutions. At this stage of DO IT we are not interestedin evaluating ideas. Instead, we are tryingto generate as many different ideas aspossible. Even bad ideas may be the seedsof good ones. You can use the whole battery ofcreativity techniques covered earlier inthis section to search for possiblesolutions. Each tool has its particularstrengths and benefits, depending onthe problems that you want to solve. While you are generating solutions, remember that other people will havedifferent perspectives on the problem, and it will almost certainly be worthasking for the opinions of your colleaguesas part of this process.3. Identify the Best SolutionOnly at this stage do you select the bestof the ideas you have generated. It maybe that the best idea is obvious.Alternatively, it may be worth examiningand developing a number of ideas in detailbefore you select one.Decision Tree & force Field analysis areparticularly useful. These will help you tochoose between the solutions availableto you. When you are selecting a solution, keepin mind your own or your organization'sgoals. Often Decision Making becomeseasy once you know these.4. TransformHaving identified the problem and createda solution to it, the final stage is toimplement this solution. This involves notonly development of a reliable productfrom your idea, but all the marketing andbusiness side as well. This may take a greatdeal of time and energy. Many very creative people fail at this stage. They will have fun creating new productsand services that may be years ahead ofwhat are available on the market. Theywill then fail to develop them, and watchsomeone else make a fortune out of theidea several years later. The first stage in transforming an idea isto develop an Action Plan for thetransformation. This may lead to creationof a Business or Marketing Plan. Once youhave done this, the work ofimplementation begins!Key points:DO IT is a structured process for creativity.Using DO IT ensures that you carry outthe essential groundwork that helps youto get the most out of creativity tools. These steps are:1.Problem Definition: During this stageyou apply a number of techniques toensure that you are asking the rightquestion.2.Open Mind: Here you apply creativitytechniques to generate as manyanswers as possible to the question youare asking. At this stage you are notevaluating the answers.3.Identify the best solution: Only at thisstage do you select the best solutionsfrom the ones you came up with in step2. Where you are having difficulty inselecting ideas, use formal techniquesto help.4.Transform: The final stage is to makean action plan for the implementationof the solution, and to carry it out.Without implementation, your creativityis sterile.DO IT was devised by Robert W Olsen inhis book ‘The Art of Creative Thinking’.41 42

Allergy TriggersBy: Dr. Kamran FarooquiA person with allergic symptoms orasthma is said to be sensitive to "Triggers,"including particles carried in the air. These"triggers" can start out a reaction in lungsand other parts of body. Triggers can befound indoors or outdoors. They can besimple things like:· Cold air.· Tobacco smoke and wood smoke.· Perfume, paint, hair spray, or anystrong odors or fumes.· Allergens (particles that cause allergies)such as dust mites, pollen, molds, pollution, and animal dander (whichare tiny scales or particles that fall offhair, feathers or skin) from any pets.· Common cold, influenza, and otherrespiratory illnesses.Finding triggers isn't always easy. Iftriggers are not known, limiting exposureto one suspected trigger at a time mayhelp. Watch to see if you get better. Thismay show you if the trigger was a problemfor you. If a trigger is found, cutting downexposure to it may help avoid asthma andallergy attacks.T R I G G E RCONTROLSHere are somecommon triggers andsome ways to helpcontrol them at home:Tobacco SmokeSmoke should not be allowed in the homeof someone with asthma or allergies. Askfamily members and friends to smokeoutdoors. Suggest that they quit smoking.PetsAlmost all pets can cause allergies, including dogs, cats and birds. All petsshould be removed from the home if petstrigger asthma and allergy symptoms.Pet allergen may stay in the home formonths after the pet is gone because itremains in house dust, so allergy andasthma symptoms may take some timeto get better. If the pet stays in the home, keep it outof the bedroom of anyone with asthmaor allergies. Weekly pet baths may helpcut down the amount of pet saliva anddander in the home.CockroachesEven cockroaches can cause problems,so it's important to get rid of roaches inyour home. Small pieces of dead roachesand roach droppings settle in house dustand can end up in the air you breathe.Like humans, roaches need food andwater and a place to live. Help keep yourhome roach free by storing food insealable containers and keeping crumbs, dirty dishes and other sources of foodwaste cleaned up; fixing leaks and wipingup standing water; and cleaning up clutterwhere roaches find shelter. If you still have problems and you haveto choose a pesticide, be sure to use itsafely, and as directed on the label.Indoor MoldWhen humidity is high, molds can be aproblem in bathrooms, kitchens, andbasements. Make sure these areas havegood air circulation and are cleanedoften.Molds also form in houseplants, so checkthem often. You may have to keep allplants outdoors.Strong Odors or FumesPerfume, room deodorizers, cleaningchemicals, paint, and talcum powder areexamples of triggers that must be avoidedor kept tovery low levels.Dust MitesDust mites are tiny, microscopicspiders usually found in house dust.Several thousand mites can befound in a pinch of dust. Mites areone of the major triggers for peoplewith allergies and asthma. Theyneed the most work to remove.Following these rules can also helpget rid of dust mites:· Put pillows and mattresses inplastic covers.· Wash all bedding every week inwater that is at least 130 degreesF. Removing the bedspread atnight may help.· Don't sleep or lie down onupholstered (stuffed) furniture.· Remove carpeting in thebedroom.· Clean up surface dust as often aspossible. Use a damp mop ordamp cloth when you clean. Don'tuse aerosols or spray cleaners inthe bedroom. And don't clean theroom when someone with asthmaor allergies is present.· Window coverings attract dust.Use window shades or curtainsmade of plastic or other washablematerial for easy cleaning.· Remove stuffed furniture andstuffed animals (unless theanimals can be washed), andanything under the bed.· Closets need extra care. Theyshould hold only needed clothing.Putting clothes pin a plasticgarment bag may help.· Dust mites like moisture and highhumidity. Cutting down thehumidity in your home can cutdown the number of mites.43 44
