Meet the Assistant Coaches

It won’t take the Aurora University Spartan softball team
long to get a handle on how they fare against the nation’s
best teams this season.
“This is the toughest schedule we’ve faced to begin a season,”
said AU softball coach Mike McKenzie. “Six of our first
12 games are against teams that made the NCAA tournament
last season. We’re going to find out pretty fast what we
have to figure out as a team to in order to compete on a
national level.”
As a program, McKenzie’s Spartans are very familiar with
competing against the top teams in the region and nation;
however, those contests usually bunch up at the tail end of
the season, as the Spartans are main players in the Northern
Athletic Conference tournament championship chase and
the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.
In his eight seasons at the helm, McKenzie has led the
Spartans to six conference championships and four NCAA III
national tournament appearances while amassing an
impressive 281-71-2 overall record.
Last season, the Spartans lost out on the automatic bid to
the national tournament by falling to rival Benedictine
University in the championship game of the NAC tournament.
Despite a 33-11 record, the team did not receive an atlarge
bid to the national tournament.
“Our goal is always to get into the NCAA tournament,”
McKenzie said. “We would prefer to win our conference
tournament and receive the automatic qualifier from that,
but we have also received at-large bids in the past.”
McKenzie returns a good mix of players this season to
meet his program’s consistent national tournament goal.
McKenzie returns six starters to the field and one pitcher. In
the outfield, senior Caitlyn Clay returns with sophomore
Jackie Soch, while the infield returns senior Maggie Cooper
(first base), sophomore Sarah Clauser (second base), junior
Brooke Spencer (shortstop) and junior Tristan Wilcox (catcher).
Junior Stephanie Lynch and sophomore Lillie Stone
return to either utility, designated hitter or expanded infield
roles, while sophomore Hope Webster returns as a leader for
the Spartans in the circle.
For leadership, McKenzie needs to look no further than
the beginning of his batting order. The first three batters on
AU’s lineup card boast four total All-Region accolades and
five total All-Conference team awards. The same trio, with
the addition of Clay later in the lineup, total 10 seasons of
starting experience for the Spartans.
Batting lead-off for the Spartans this season will be junior
First-Team Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches
Association All-Region selection Spencer, who returns at
shortstop. Spencer set an AU single-season record with 14
home runs last season. She also led the team in virtually
every hitting category, batting .480 with 49 runs batted in
and 49 runs scored while registering a .928 slugging percentage
and .571 on-base percentage for the season. Spencer
also posted team highs in total hits (60), total bases (116),
stolen bases (7-for-7) and walks (26). A third-year starter,
Spencer was an All-Northern Athletics Conference First-
Team selection as a sophomore and NAC All-Freshman team
recipient in her first season. Proving she can turn out good
grades as well as double plays, Spencer earned CoSIDA-
Capital One District V Academic All-District Third Team honors
last season.
Second up for the Spartans on offense will be fellow junior
All-Region selection Wilcox. A Second-Team All-Region
catcher last season, Wilcox is no stranger to the NFCA
regional squad, having earned First-Team All-Region stripes
as a freshman. The two-time First-Team All-Conference performer
and former NAC Freshman of the Year batted .378
last season with nine home runs, 14 doubles, 33 runs scored
and 35 runs batted in. Defensively, she posted a 1.000 fielding
percentage and caught 10 runners stealing from behind
the plate.
2012 Softball Prospectus
Batting third for the Spartans and returning for her fourth
year as a starter is senior and NAC All-Sportsmanship Team
member Cooper. The first baseman earned First-Team NAC
honors and Third-Team All-Region honors as a sophomore
before garnering Academic All-District V Second-Team
Laurels last season. Cooper batted .300 last season, tallying
42 hits, four home runs and 10 doubles to drive in 28 runs.
Leading the outfield will be fellow senior and three-year
starter Clay, who will move to the centerfield position. The
Third-Team All-NAC performer batted .341 last season, registering
a team-high 15 doubles to go with 43 total hits, 31
runs scored and 24 runs batted in.
“(Cooper and Clay) have already had good careers for us,”
McKenzie said of his senior returning three-year starters,
adding that he expects his seniors, as well as Spencer and
Wilcox, to provide leadership this season. “They have done
nothing but work hard and have gotten better and better
each year.”
Rounding out the infield and outfield returners are sophomores
Clauser, who earned NAC All-Freshman honors last
year at second base (.343 batting average, 36 hits, 17 runs
scored, 16 runs batted in); and Soch, whose quality play
earned her a starting role at in the outfield later in the season
(37 games played, 10 games started, .344 batting average,
14 runs scored, 14 runs batted in). Lynch returns to her
utility and designated hitter position (24 games started, .366
batting average, 30 hits, 16 runs scored, seven runs batted
in), while Stone (20 games started, .329 batting average, 31
runs batted in, 25 hits, three home runs) will be expected to
slide into a vacated role at third base.
Adding experienced depth to the field positions this season
will be juniors Stephanie Dolce (infield), Mia Henderson
(outfield), and sophomore Sarah Benak (outfield).
McKenzie also expects several athletic freshmen to make
major contributions to the team this season, including
speedy outfielder Ciandra Keith, infielder Samantha Angell,
versatile infielder Alana Weitzenfeld and quality-hitting
catcher Amanda Blackwell.
On the mound, the Spartans will be led by NAC-All
Freshman Team performer Hope Webster. In her first season,
Webster posted a 12-5 record and led the team with a 2.41
earned run average in 108.1 innings pitched. She also registered
79 strikeouts and executed 13 complete games.
McKenzie expects a trio of freshmen, Natalie Zanella, Ashley
Kellenberger and Sam Kozenski, to contribute immediately
to the pitching staff.
The team’s even blend of experience and youth will be
tested early by some of the nation’s best teams, which
McKenzie knows could be an advantage as the season progresses.
He hopes this year’s schedule will set the bar early in
helping the team reach its national tournament aspirations.
As tough as the early schedule is, McKenzie said nothing
quite matches the pressure of the post-season.
“If you have a bad day (in the conference or national tournament),
you’re done,” McKenzie said. “We’ve always been
able to be right there in the end, and that’s a testament to
the work ethic and drive of our student-athletes.”
The Spartans begin their home schedule March 28 with a
doubleheader against the conference rival Benedictine
University. The first game is slated to begin at 3 p.m. at
Stuart Sports Complex in Aurora.
Eckhart Hall
Aurora University traces its origins to the 1893 founding of a seminary in
the small town of Mendota, IL. Though established initially to prepare graduates
for ministry, the institution soon adopted a broader mission and moved to a
new campus on the western edge of the nearby community of Aurora. With this
change came a different name and a growing enrollment. In 1985, the institution
was rechristened Aurora University.
In 1992, the Aurora and George Williams College traditions blended when the
two institutions entered into the affiliation agreement that paved the way for a
merger eight years later.
Today, Aurora University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission
of the North Central Association to award degrees at the baccalaureate, master’s
and doctoral levels. The institution enrolls approximately 4,400 degree-seeking
students a year on its Illinois and Wisconsin campuses.
The Aurora campus offers undergraduate and graduate programs through
the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education (including the School
of Physical Education) and the College of Professional Studies (including the
Dunham School of Business, School of Nursing and School of Social Work.) The
graduate programs offer areas of specialization, leading to master’s degrees in
business administration, criminal justice, mathematics, nursing, recreation
administration, teaching and social work, as well as doctoral degrees in education
and social work.
At AU, academic programs are enhanced through learning opportunities. The
Dunham Scholars Program incorporates service learning and extracurricular
activities into its business curriculum. The Honors Program offers students
advanced coursework, innovative seminars and participation in special events.
May Term is a three-week program offering opportunities to study abroad,
research a special topic on campus or travel to Chicago to explore the city’s culture.
AU offers its undergraduates a wide range of on- and off-campus learning
experiences. Students participate in more than 50 musical, literary, religious,
social and service organizations and play active roles in campus governance.
The university also fields 20 NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletic teams. The
Spartans boast a winning tradition with 51 conference titles in recent years and
30 appearances in national tournaments.
The Alumni Hall of Physical Education features a gymnasium, racquetball
court, complete locker room facilities, training room, film room, weight room,
aerobic-activities room and coaches’ offices.
Aurora University is located on the west side of Aurora, within an hour’s drive
of Chicago and at the western end of the Illinois Research and Development
Corridor. It is accessible via Interstate 88 at the Orchard Road exit.
