Celebrating 30 Years of Volunteers:
Hospice of Lancaster County
Honors Exceptional Volunteers
On April 12, 2010, Betty Rudy of Lancaster received the Hospice of Lancaster
County Spirit of Hospice Award during the 2010 Volunteer Recognition Dinner
at the Lancaster Marriott and Conference Center.
A retired high school guidance counselor, Betty has served as a home
hospice and care team volunteer, but since 2000, she has
devoted herself to volunteering at the PATHways Center for
Grief & Loss. In addition to assisting with general support
groups, Betty also helps with the PATHways Center’s Adult
Grief Retreat and the Newly Bereaved, Coping With the
Holidays and Growing Through Grief series.
“Betty always says how privileged she feels to be a
bereavement volunteer,” says Patti Anewalt, PhD, director
of the PATHways Center for Grief & Loss. “The staff at the
PATHways Center consider it a true privilege to have her
as a volunteer.”
The Spirit of Hospice Award is given each year to a
volunteer whose contributions significantly strengthen the
organization and its mission, and in addition recognizes
a volunteer who demonstrates personal growth and an increased
understanding of the hospice philosophy.
Kayla Retallack of Mount Joy was named Teen of the Year. Rookie
of the Year went to Jerry Hart of Lancaster. Charlotte (Jeff) Liddell of
Lancaster was honored for her 25 years of service as a volunteer and
Bobbie Stewart of Lancaster was recognized for more than 4,000 hours
of cumulative service.
Paul Scott, DJ at Smooth Jazz 92.7 FM, was emcee of the Volunteer
Recognition event.
Hospice of Lancaster County has more than 1,000 active volunteers
Jeff Liddell
who donated more than 40,000 hours of support to patients, families and
staff in 2009. Hospice deeply appreciates its volunteers and their steadfast
commitment to service and the Lancaster County community.
