From Our Chairman<br />
On April 12, 2010, we honored more than 1,000 <strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County<br />
volunteers at the Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Although we officially<br />
recognize and honor our volunteers every spring, we appreciate their priceless<br />
donation of time and talents every single day throughout the year. As we<br />
celebrate our 30th Anniversary, we reflect how important volunteers have been<br />
to our organization since <strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County opened its doors three<br />
decades ago.<br />
Nearly all of our patients and their families have experienced the gentle<br />
support of our volunteers. These special people visit patients at home, in the<br />

nursing home, hospital or inpatient center; they prepare meals for our patients<br />
and their loved ones; they welcome visitors to our centers; they console grieving families; they play a<br />
crucial role in our fundraising activities throughout the year.<br />
We are so grateful to our volunteers and others in the community for helping make our<br />
organization what it is today.<br />

Aging Review 10, co-sponsored by the American Institute<br />
of Architects (AIA) and the American Association of Homes and Services for Aging (AAHSA).<br />
Designs of the project will be exhibited at the AIA and AAHSA conferences and will be published in<br />
Design for Aging Review, 10 th Edition.<br />
The Mount Joy <strong>Hospice</strong> Center has made an immediate impact on the community. Since the facility<br />
opened, more than 500 patients received inpatient care and the PATHways Center for Grief & Loss<br />
supported more than 7,600 adults, teens and children in 2009.<br />

Create A Future for <strong>Hospice</strong> By<br />
Establishing an Endowment Fund<br />
<strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County has established special funds for the purpose of providing income<br />
to be used for specific needs. The principal remains invested in order to perpetuate the fund for<br />
future generations. <strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County now offers seven endowment funds that support<br />
specific programs and services, due to the generosity of its donors. To create or donate to an<br />

Celebrating 30 Years of Volunteers:<br />
<strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County<br />
Honors Exceptional Volunteers<br />
On April 12, 2010, Betty Rudy of Lancaster received the <strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster<br />
County Spirit of <strong>Hospice</strong> Award during the 2010 Volunteer Recognition Dinner<br />
at the Lancaster Marriott and Conference Center.<br />
A retired high school guidance counselor, Betty has served as a home<br />
hospice and care team volunteer, but since 2000, she has<br />
devoted herself to volunteering at the PATHways Center for<br />
Grief & Loss. In addition to assisting with general support<br />
groups, Betty also helps with the PATHways Center’s Adult<br />
Grief Retreat and the Newly Bereaved, Coping With the<br />
Holidays and Growing Through Grief series.<br />
“Betty always says how privileged she feels to be a<br />
bereavement volunteer,” says Patti Anewalt, PhD, director<br />
of the PATHways Center for Grief & Loss. “The staff at the<br />
PATHways Center consider it a true privilege to have her<br />
as a volunteer.”<br />
The Spirit of <strong>Hospice</strong> Award is given each year to a<br />
volunteer whose contributions significantly strengthen the<br />
organization and its mission, and in addition recognizes<br />
a volunteer who demonstrates personal growth and an increased<br />
understanding of the hospice philosophy.<br />
Kayla Retallack of Mount Joy was named Teen of the Year. Rookie<br />
of the Year went to Jerry Hart of Lancaster. Charlotte (Jeff) Liddell of<br />
Lancaster was honored for her 25 years of service as a volunteer and<br />
Bobbie Stewart of Lancaster was recognized for more than 4,000 hours<br />
of cumulative service.<br />
Paul Scott, DJ at Smooth Jazz 92.7 FM, was emcee of the Volunteer<br />
Recognition event.<br />
<strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County has more than 1,000 active volunteers<br />

Celebrating Thirty Years of Caring: Local Artist<br />
to Sell Light Up a Life Prints to Benefit <strong>Hospice</strong><br />
Local artist Tom Hermansader of Columbia, Pa. will sell prints of an original painting,<br />
entitled Light Up a Life, to benefit <strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County.<br />
Tom says Michael Aliotta, who owns several restaurants in Columbia, was the one who<br />
approached him about the idea. “I’ve had the privilege of <strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County<br />
caring for my mom and dad,” Michael says. “I told Tom that Light Up a Life was such a<br />
great experience. We got to talking, and he decided to create a painting for <strong>Hospice</strong> of<br />
Lancaster County.”<br />
“Everyone who drives down Route 30 sees the trees during the holidays,” Tom<br />
says. “They’re so beautiful. The gazebo was a point of interest as well.” His paintings<br />
usually feature buildings throughout Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and beyond,<br />
but he says this painting has more of an emotional connection<br />
for him.<br />
To create the painting, Tom used watercolor and gouache (a<br />
material like tempera paint) on watercolor block. The painting<br />
depicts 11 trees, with 200 lights each, as well as the gazebo on<br />
<strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County’s property at night. “It was a lot of<br />
fun to work on,” Tom says.<br />
Beginning May 1, 2010, Tom will be selling 95 artist prints,<br />
which he personally inspects, and 950 signed and numbered<br />
prints. Fifty percent of all proceeds will be donated to <strong>Hospice</strong><br />
of Lancaster County. All prints will be unframed; framing<br />
arrangements can be made with the artist.<br />

Tom Hermansader, born in 1950, received a bachelor<br />
and master degrees in art education from Kutztown<br />
University. A former art teacher at Columbia Junior-<br />

30 th Anniversary Cookbook for Sale<br />
<strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County’s 30 th Anniversary Cookbook is full of tasty and<br />
delicious recipes donated by the organization’s staff and volunteers. Cookbooks<br />
cost $12* each and are available at the Essa Flory <strong>Hospice</strong> Center in Lancaster<br />
and the Mount Joy <strong>Hospice</strong> Center. Cookbooks also will be sold at the Labor Day<br />
Auction, September 4 and 6, 2010 at the Lampeter Fairgrounds. Quantities are<br />
limited, so be sure to pick up your cookbook today!<br />

Labor Day Auction<br />
<strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County’s Annual Labor<br />
Day Auction is the organization’s largest<br />
fundraising event—and volunteers help make<br />
it successful. The following volunteering<br />
opportunities will be available during the<br />
summer:<br />
Volunteer Solicitors are assigned to visit<br />

to the Labor Day Auction<br />
<strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County is seeking used cars for a very special<br />
auction to take place during the 26 th Annual Labor Day Auction,<br />
September 4 and 6, 2010 in Lampeter, Pa.<br />
To be considered for the Used Car Auction, cars must be in good<br />
running condition, with up-to-date paperwork including a clear title,<br />
registration and inspection as of September, 2010. When you donate<br />
your car to <strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County, you avoid the costs associated<br />
with selling your car, including advertising. Please consult your tax<br />
professional regarding charitable deductions before you donate your<br />
vehicle.<br />

The PATHways Center for Grief & Loss offers a wide<br />
variety of programs and support for children, teens and<br />
adults in our community who are impacted by serious<br />
illness and loss. Anyone may participate, regardless<br />
of whether a loved one was cared for by <strong>Hospice</strong> of<br />
Lancaster County. The PATHways Center is located at<br />

<strong>This</strong> new bereavement workshop and dessert social will be<br />
held Wednesday, June 9, 6:30–8:30 p.m. at the PATHways<br />
Center for Grief & Loss. Fathers teach many lessons<br />
in life through their words, actions, positive examples<br />
and even their human frailties and mistakes. <strong>Hospice</strong> of<br />
Lancaster County Chaplain David Stiffler will facilitate this<br />
interactive workshop for men and women that will explore<br />
fathers’ legacies. Come ready to smile, reminisce and<br />
participate in a commemorative activity with others whose<br />
fathers have died. Please bring a framed photo of your<br />
father for the memory table.
Grief Camp Helps Children Cope With<br />
Loss and Connect With Others<br />
When Maxwell Lester, age 8, lost his grandfather<br />
early in 2009, he didn’t really talk about it. Looking<br />
for a way to talk about the loss as a family, his<br />
parents, Marla and Matthew Lester, of Lancaster, are<br />
grateful to have been able to send Maxwell to Camp<br />
Chimaqua, an overnight weekend bereavement<br />
camp for children age 6–12.<br />
“We were excited for the opportunity and heard<br />
really good things about Camp,” says Marla.<br />
According to bereavement counselors Michele Fry<br />
and Sonya Hershey-Velasco, Camp Chimaqua, now<br />
in its 14th year, serves two very important purposes:<br />
Children learn that they are not alone and their grief<br />
is normal, even though it may feel abnormal as they<br />
are going through it.<br />
During camp, children participate in therapeutic<br />
and commemoration exercises designed to help<br />
them express their feelings and share memories of their<br />
loved ones.<br />
For Maxwell, the most memorable activity at camp was<br />
making a boat. In the evening, all the campers gather for a<br />
ceremony to light a candle on their boats and float them out<br />
into the pond. By the time all the boats are out in the lake<br />
it is dark and the children see all the lights moving with the<br />
current of the water, symbolizing that this light of their loved<br />
one also can be kept in their hearts.<br />
One-on-One Support<br />
Children are paired with a specially trained adult<br />
volunteer who serves as their “buddy,” throughout the entire<br />
weekend. They are<br />
right along side the<br />
campers as they swim<br />
and play games, as<br />
well as when they<br />
participate in their<br />
grief activities.<br />
“Maxwell did very<br />
well and gained a lot<br />
of independence from being at camp. He was with a group<br />
of experienced counselors with children who were facing<br />
loss,” says Marla.<br />
Marla says she saw a change in Maxwell when he<br />
returned from Camp. “It was a good way to open the<br />
discussion,” she says. “I’d definitely recommend the camp.<br />
It was a great opportunity for Maxwell to reflect.”<br />
Camp Chimaqua will be held June 11–13 at<br />
Camp Shand in Southern Lebanon County. For more<br />

Make a Difference: Join the <strong>Hospice</strong> Circle of Friends<br />
The <strong>Hospice</strong> Circle of Friends is a special, dynamic group of<br />
people who promote <strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County and raise<br />
funds for the organization.<br />
Besides organizing small fundraisers and large events like<br />
Spring Fling, the Circle of Friends also participates in social<br />
activities like holiday parties, Barnstormers games and more.<br />
Last year, this special group of dynamic people raised more than<br />
$27,000, which allows <strong>Hospice</strong> of Lancaster County to continue to provide care<br />
to anyone in the community who needs help.<br />
The group is looking for more members. There is no cost to join the Circle<br />
of Friends and members meet the first Wednesday of every month, 6:30 –<br />
7:30 p.m. at the <strong>Hospice</strong> Center on Good Drive. To join the <strong>Hospice</strong> Circle of<br />
