<strong>Macmillan</strong> <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Support</strong> has developed<strong>the</strong> Get Active Feel Good pack <strong>to</strong> helppeople affected by cancer <strong>to</strong> get active.The pack has been developed by experts inhealth behavioural change, and is basedon proven behaviour change methodsused in <strong>the</strong> NHS’ Let’s Get Moving physicalactivity care pathway.The benefits of being physically activeTraditionally cancer patients were <strong>to</strong>ld <strong>to</strong> rest after <strong>the</strong>ir treatment,<strong>how</strong>ever, physical activity is very important <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> survival and recoveryprocess.• Reduce risk of cancer recurrence – being active during and after cancertreatment can reduce <strong>the</strong> risk of recurrence in some cancers. It can alsoreduce <strong>the</strong> risk of developing o<strong>the</strong>r long-term conditions.• Reduce side effects – being active during and after cancer treatmentcan reduce some side effects of cancer and cancer treatment.• Prevent decline in physical ability – being active during cancertreatment can prevent a decline in physical ability without increasingfatigue levels.• Recover physical ability – being active after cancer treatment helpspatients recover physical ability.• Maintain independence – in cases of advanced cancer physical activitycan help patients maintain independence and well-being.


People need support with getting active<strong>Cancer</strong> patients face a large number of barriers <strong>to</strong> being active.The <strong>to</strong>p barriers <strong>the</strong>y say <strong>the</strong>y face are being <strong>to</strong>o tired, a lack of time andbeing <strong>to</strong>o weak. They also said <strong>the</strong>y need help <strong>to</strong> get motivated, and want<strong>to</strong> learn more about <strong>the</strong> benefits of being active.How <strong>the</strong> pack can help your patientsInformation and adviceMost cancer survivors are keen <strong>to</strong> receive information or advice aboutphysical activity at some point during <strong>the</strong> cancer experience.Increasing levels of activityThe pack is highly effective at helping people <strong>to</strong> get active. 92% of patientssaid <strong>the</strong> pack helped <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> increase <strong>the</strong>ir levels of activity.Changing perceptionsPatients who are worried about <strong>how</strong> <strong>the</strong>y will be affected by being moreactive receive reassurance from <strong>the</strong> pack that this is okay. 81% of patientswho had concerns said that <strong>the</strong> pack helped <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> overcome <strong>the</strong>iranxieties.<strong>Support</strong>ing people in palliative careThe pack gives patients <strong>the</strong> comfort that it is okay <strong>to</strong> undertake somesuitable activities.
