AccommodationRIMBA LODGE, TANJUNGPUTINGSimpleRimba Lodge is hidden in the jungle andset right on the edge of the gentlyflowing Sekonyer River beside TanjungPuting National Park. The timber lodgeis built in a series of adjoining elevatedpavilions with each pavilion containingthree rooms and its own coveredverandah and boardwalk to the river’sedge. The 32 rooms all have fans andmosquito drapes as well as westerntoilets and showers. The diamond,emerald and amethyst rooms werecommend have air conditioning, fansand (temperamental) hot water;sapphire rooms have (temperamental)hot water and fan; ruby rooms havecold water and fan. There is arestaurant here with limited westernfood and numerous local dishes servedby friendly staff. English speaking guidesare available for bird watching aroundthe lodge and a percentage of thelodges profit goes to environmentalprotection. Electricity is powered by agenerator which runs from 5pm to8am so the rooms can get very hotduring the day - but most people areout exploring at this time.Whilst staying here you may see asmany as nine primate species, pluscrocodile and rare birds such as thestorms stork. In the mornings you maybe lucky to hear the plaintive cry ofgibbon, early birdsong and the residentmacaque monkey troop from yourcomfortable room at the lodge. Themacaque can be overly curious at timesso make sure your windows are closedand doors locked or you may comeback to find a few things missing fromyour room!Our opinion: A no frills lodge with theperfect base for exploring the area.MAJAPAHIT HOTEL,SURABAYAFirst ClassThe hotel was originally built in 1910and has an impressive history whichblends well with the romantic andelegant feel it has to the place. It hasgraceful architecture and landscapedgardens which befit its colonial style.The hotel has all modern facilitiesincluding a spa and a gym, an outdoorswimming pool; a business centre andseveral bars and restaurants to choosefrom and is located in the city centre ofSurabaya.Our opinion: By far the best hotel in thecity and a very comfortable optionbetween Kalimantan and Mount Bromo.30 Accommodation
