Founded as the Eastern 150-pound Football League in1934, the original group had seven members: Cornell, Lafayette, Pennsylvania, Princeton, Rutgers, Villanova and Yale.Over the next 25 years, as student-athletesbecame bigger, the weight limit was increased from 150 to 154 lbs. and later to 159 lbs. The weight limit then reached 165 lbs. before reaching172 lbs.On June 9, 1998, the head coaches and athletic directors from each school in the present league – Army, Cornell, Navy, Penn and Princeton – collectivelymet to discuss the Lightweight Football League’s survival. The meeting addressed the problems of attracting teams to join the league, as well asgender equity issues, club versus varsity status and the future of the league. Strong support and leadership by the athletic directors and coaches hasbeen pledged to keep Sprint Football as a varsity sport and to actively search out new teams to join the league.Discussion about the weight issues that faced wrestling nationwide in 1998 prompted coaches and athletic directors to adopt several NCAA rulesand regulations for monitoring players’ weights and the proper way to control weight loss. This discussion led to the elimination of the name“Lightweight,” and it was replaced with the word “Sprint,” which expresses the quickness and speed of play in the league and will serve as a marketingtool to attract new teams.“When you talk about sprint football, it reflects the positive qualities of the game,” then-Commissioner George VanderZwaag said. “"It is defined bythe speed of the players and the open nature of the offensive and defensive schemes. We offer something truly unique in the world of intercollegiateathletics. We hope that other institutions recognize this league and want to join.”The College Sprint Football League continues to flourish and anticipates welcoming the Virginia Military Institute in the future.12 w w w . p e n n a t h l e t i c s . c o m

We like to think of Penn as one of Franklin's biggest and best inventions—and• Dr. John Draper took the first photographs of the moon at Penn •one that continues to flourish centuries after its founding. In his "Proposals Relating to the Education ofYouth in Pensilvania" (1749), Franklin outlined a progressive college: one that would offer practical as wellas classical instruction in order to prepare youth for real-world pursuits.Franklin’s spirit of free inquiry and learning in the service ofsociety continues to guide the University today.Penn traces its origins to 1740, when a group of Philadelphians established a trust for the instructionof children in a charity school. In 1750, Benjamin Franklin combined this trust with his PublicAcademy of Philadelphia, founded the year before. This institution, chartered in 1755 as the"College, Academy and Charitable School of Philadelphia," became the first university in what isnow the United States with the establishment of the country's first medical school in 1765. In 1779,it became the first university in the country to formally bear the name. Today, the Penn campus has151 buildings on 269 acres of land in West Philadelphia and is the largest institution of higher learningin the city.Today, Penn is home to a diverse undergraduate student body of over 10,000, hailing from everystate in the union and all around the globe.
