As aprominent author has said, ourculture is sick — “sick of a sexsoiled,violence-ridden film andentertainment industry thatportrays every base act ofhuman nature as normalbehavior ... sick of the so-calledexperts spewing outpsychological nonsense thatexcuses every act of personalirresponsibility.” In such anenvironment, addiction runsrampant.What is addiction? It’s acompulsive need for use of aharmful habit-formingsubstance, or the habitual orobsessive surrender of oneselfto something. And it is allaround us. Ten million peopledrink themselves into a stuporevery day. Ten million abusedrugs. Sexual promiscuity isendemic; porn is a multibillion-dollarindustry.Cyber-sex and online childporn are readily available. It’salmost impossible todistinguish between “cause”and “effect” anymore —millions of children are bornout of wedlock, for example;yet our “tolerant” culture saysit’s OK, which encouragesanother generation of 11-yearoldgirls to have sex!Is any addiction actually adisease? Or are theytransgressions of God’s Word?The truth is not politicallycorrect. (But then, I never hadmuch patience for all thepsycho-babble that passes forwisdom in our culture.) Godnever punishes a disease —cancer, tuberculosis,Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s — butHe does punish sin. “They thatplow iniquity and sowThe vast Westerntragedy of addictionis no surprise toGod — everythingwe see is part ofBible prophecywickedness reap the same,”Job 4:8 says. As Rexella oftenpoints out, she has never metan alcoholic who was happy, ora nicotine addict who reallywanted to be that way. Godknows this — and bans whatwill destroy our joy! His termfor it? Sin!It’s crucial that we asChristians get the addictiondilemma in focus — because asa national survey showed, 22.2million Americans over the ageof 11 suffer from abuse of, ordependence on, drugs oralcohol. Addiction is America’snumber one public healthcrisis! Last year alone, morethan 150,000 died as a directresult of chemical addiction.And God’s Word is clear onthe subject. Five separate timesin the Bible, the term wecommonly translate as sorcerydoes not actually refer tocontrol by evil spirits; it’sactually the ancient Greek termpharmakeia — from which weget our English wordpharmacy. Revelation 18:23,for example, says, “For bypharmakeia” — drug abuse! —“were all nations deceived.”Revelation 9:21 speaks of thosewho “would not repent of theirmurders, their pharmakeia” —their abuse of drugs — “theirsexual escapades, and theirthefts.” Order the video for anin-depth discussion on all fiveBiblical passages.Many Christians try to skatearound the biblical facts. It is an evil which islimited to no age, no continent,

Some6,000 teens die in car crashesevery year — our culture moreor less shrugs its shoulders. Yetif 12 fully loaded jumbo jetscrashed every year, we wouldrush to action! On top of this,new research shows that evenmoderate drinking incurs theloss of irreplaceable braincells.What about the so-called“social drinking” in whichmany professing Christiansengage? The Bible is explicitlyplain on this subject. There arethree billion souls in variousreligions today who will nottouch alcohol — one billioneach in the Hindu, Buddhist,and Islamic faiths. Who doesthe guzzling? The Christians!Yet the Holy Spirit who ledHoly Men of God to pen HisWord constantly speaks outagainst liquor! (I am often notinvited to certain ministers’meetings to speak becausethose doing the inviting wanttheir booze!). As Belgians, we wereallowed to have alcohol at thetable. I got drunk twice before Iwas 12, from my father’s ownliquor. Then by God’s grace, myfather, my mother, and I allwere saved. The night myfather received Christ as hisSavior, he cleaned out thepantry. He took beer and wineand whiskey — all of it — andsmashed the bottles in thealley. He was never the sameagain! “Therefore if any man bein Christ, he is a new creature:old things are passed away;behold, all things are becomenew”! (II Corinthians 5:17).This video is loaded withScriptural demands andcommands. You will neveragain wonder what the will ofGod is concerning alcohol.Another huge addiction inour culture is pornography.Hotels report that 55 percent ofall the movies ordered on inroomsystems are sexual. The sexindustry moves $3.62 billion invideos, $2.84 billion online,$2.19 billion in cable services,$2 billion in exotic dancingclubs — and this list goes onand on. Some 72 million peoplevisited adult websites everysingle month of last year —and that monthly figure isgrowing! Some 39 millionhomes receive adult channels.More than 100,000 websitesoffer child pornography.What does the Bible say?“As the days of Noah were, soshall also the coming of theSon of Man be” (Matthew24:37). How was it in Noah’sday? Genesis 6:5 says that“every imagination of thethoughts of men’s minds wasonly evil continually.” All theycould think of was sex andmore sex! “The whole worldwas corrupt,” verse 10. Theresult: a horrendous flood(Genesis 7:22).A Promise Keepers surveyrevealed that more than half ofthe men attending their eventswere involved with pornography.

My parentsfaithfully took me and mybrothers to church from thetime that we were able to walk.And with the example of mymother, I started singing when Iwas five years old. Therabbis would get together anddiscuss theological matters inpublic. And this was a perfectopportunity to question ourLord — or was it more of anuneasy conscience speaking?The Lord answered thelawyer, “What is written in thelaw? How readest thou?”The lawyer answeredsaying, “‘Thou shalt love theLord thy God with all thy heart,and with all thy soul, and withall thy strength, and with all thymind; and thy neighbour asthyself.’ And he said unto him,‘Thou hast answered right: thisdo, and thou shalt live.’ But he,willing to justify himself, saidunto Jesus, ‘And who is myneighbour?’”He actually wanted to temptthe Lord. Can you imagine theaudacity of any person trying toput the Lord on trial? Almost asif to say, well you think youknow so much, tell me exactlywho my neighbor is.The Lord without anyhesitation answered him withthe story of the Good Samaritanand a traveler on the road fromJerusalem to Jericho. Noticethat the Bible does not call thisa parable. If Jesus were to tell aparable (which is a short storythat illustrates a moral attitudeor religious principle) with aSamaritan being the hero, theJews would have immediatelyrejected it. They would havesaid that there is no way thatthis would have happened —not with a Samaritan that didthe right thing at the right time.My husband and I havelooked from Jerusalem down toJericho many, many times. It isabout a 17 mile trip and itearned the title “The Way ofBlood” during the time of Christbecause of the thieves thatThe questionthat this lawyerasked was onethat was oftendebated by theJews.were there robbing those whopassed by on their way toJericho. It was a rathertreacherous way to go. So itwas a dynamic illustration thatthe Lord used that day.Everyone knew He spoke thetruth when He spoke about aman that went from Jerusalemto Jericho who fell amongstthieves that stripped him,wounded him, and left him halfdead. They all knew that theroad was dangerous, full ofcurves and switchbacks wherethieves could lie in wait fortravelers.Here is the essence of theshort story Jesus told that day.There came down a certainpriest on his way to Jerichowho saw a naked, beaten,wounded, half dead man by thewayside, and proceeded to passby on the other side. Likewise aLevite on his way to Jericho,when he was at the same place,stared at the dying man andreasoned that he could not takethe time to help him butcontinued on his journey.I can’t help but think —what would I have done had Icome across a man lying in theroad, in his own blood, beatenand nearly dead — would Ihave reacted as these menreacted?What if I had been a priestwho had probably beenlecturing in Jerusalem and nowon my way to Jericho, tiredbecause I had been busy all day.Would I have actually stoppedand had compassion on thisman in the street?If I had been a Levite, whowas looked up to during thetime of Christ, and I had been inJerusalem, possibly on businessand was now on my way toJericho, would I have been toobusy, too complacent, toounmoved by what I saw in thebushes there on the other side?Perhaps these two menallowed fear to overcome theircompassion. They could havethought that if they stopped tohelp this man, nothing wouldprevent them from ending upthe same way. What if therobbers were still in the area

20 | Perhaps Today | September-October 2007waiting for someone to stopand help this man so they couldattack them as well?But a certain Samaritan, ashe journeyed, came and saw thedying man, and when he staredat him, had compassion on him,went to him, bound up hiswounds, pouring in oil andwine, set him on his own beast,and brought him to an inn, andtook care of him. Yes, he gavehis time, his financialassistance, and his enormousefforts to save a stranger’s life.In my mind’s eye I canpicture what the reaction wasof the people who heard thisstory when Jesus mentioned aSamaritan. Samaritans weredescendents of colonists thatthe Assyrian kings brought intothe land after the fall of theNorthern Kingdom in 721 B.C.They were despised by theJews because of their mixedGentile blood.Let’s glance once more atthis heart moving story. Itwould have been so mucheasier for the Samaritan to justget somebody to help theDear Dr.Van I mpeThank you Rexella, for beingso sincere in a time when Ineeded that love you show!B.P.Bay City, ORtraveler, but he does all that hecan do at that very moment. Hedid not just leave him in the inn,but said I can do more thanhelp him this one night. So hewent into debt. The Bible saysthat he paid the innkeeper twopence — two day’s wages. Hestayed with him overnight andthen promised to come backand pay for all the bills that thehost had to spend to take careof this man until he was healed.Can you imagine this? Therewas no logical reason for thisman to rearrange his plans,spend his money just to helpanother human being in need.But compassion does not needa reason. Compassion does notlook away from anotherperson’s grief, or anotherperson’s sorrow.One of the best examples ofcompassion in action was mydear mother. Never once did Ihear her say “I don’t have timeto help you.” My mother wasthe first one to say “You have aneed; I will take care of this,and will do this for you so youwill not have to deal with it.”Anytime there was someonewho was emotionally hurting,she would say “I am here tolisten, to help in any way that Ican.” We truly need to listen toanyone who voices a need,whether it be physical,emotional, or spiritual. I thinkthis is especially important ofparents. No child should everhear a parent say “I don’t havetime for you now.”As I think aboutcompassion, I pray that theLord will help me not to everavoid someone in need. May Ialways be like the Samaritanwho followed our Lord’sexample. What did Jesus dowhen He saw the needs ofothers; He healed the sick, Hefed the multitudes. He raisedthe dead. And though we maynot have the power to do all ofthis, we can follow His exampleof compassion for others.FaithThe next measurement thatI proceeded to analyze was thatgiant word that is so importantcalled faith.“Now faith is the substanceof things hoped for, theevidence of things not seen”(Hebrews 11: 1).This verse is a wonderfuldescription of what faith doesand how it works. Biblical faithis not blind optimism or “crossyour fingers” while saying “Ihope so”. Warren Wiersbedescribes faith this way: “TrueBible faith is confidentobedience to God’s Word inspite of circumstances andconsequences.”Wow, did you catch that?Obedience: in spite ofcircumstances andconsequences. How wonderfulit is to have that kind of faith.When I think of great faith Icannot help but reflect on thestory in John 11:1-44 of Lazarus

Time and spacedoes not allow us to delve fullyinto this story, but I encourageyou to take a moment and readthis heart moving passage.What beautiful faith Maryand Martha had, but it was alsoa bit limited. When the Lordcame to the tomb whereLazarus was laid after he died,they looked at Him and said “IfYou had been here he wouldn’thave died.” They knew that Hehad the power to heal, toperform miracles. But faith inour Lord can go far beyond thatastounding statement. We canhave the kind of faith that says,“though he is now dead, dearLord, you can raise him upagain.”We can depend upon oureternal life with Him in the lightof this strong kind of faith. Andwhile on this earth we can havefaith that says, “even though Iface the hardest situations inlife, I believe that God is incontrol. Even though my lovedone has died and I’m hurting,the Lord has a reason and aloving purpose for thisdeparture and we will one daybe reunited in our eternalhome.”We all must die, unless weare alive when He comes again,but we can have the kind offaith that says the moment Iclose my eyes, I am instantlywith the Lord. We can say,“death where is your sting?”and “grave where is yourvictory?”The beautiful story of Maryand Martha goes beyond thelimited faith that was exhibitedas the Lord approached thetomb of their beloved brother.Remember, our Lord raisedLazarus from the dead.We will weep when ourfriends and loved ones departin death, but thank the Lordfor the great assurance ofeternal life. We do not weepLove wants to dothings forothers; it is notsomething thatis forced.as others who have no hope(I Thessalonians 4:13).Jesus said, “I am theresurrection and the life and hethat believeth in me, though hewere dead, yet shall he live.Whosoever liveth and believethin me shall never die.” Howcomforting it is that our faith isnot misplaced! It goes beyondthe grave because our faith is inthe Lord alone. “Looking untoJesus the author and finisher ofour faith” (Hebrews 12:2). Let’skeep our eyes on Him and ourfaith will truly never cease togrow.LoveThe last and greatest aspectof our heart’s measurement —and one that we must take careto analyze — is that beautifulfour letter word, LOVE.Love is the essence of God’snature. “And now abideth faith,hope, love, these three; but thegreatest of these is love” (ICorinthians 13:13). He putsgreat emphasis on this attributein the Bible.Right outside the kitchendoor of our world headquartershangs this plaque:I Corinthians 13:4-7,13Love is patient and kindLove is not jealous orboastful it is not arrogantor rudeLove does not insist on itsown way, it is notirritable or resentful,Love does not think evil, itdoes not rejoice at wrongbut rejoices in the right.Love bears all things,believes all things hopesall things, endures allthings.So, faith, hope, love abide— these three — but thegreatest of these is love.What a commandingchallenge to measure our heartswith these verses in mind.Love is patient and kindThat sets the bar pretty highright at the outset. Am I patient

In this fast pacedworld that we live in, it is soeasy to become impatient andunkind, especially if someone isnot responding as quickly as wedesire. How do you react whenyou have to go to a store forjust one item and you findyourself in line behind someonewho is struggling and taking toomuch time? Perhaps it is ayoung mother with smallchildren, or an elderly personwho is having difficulty findingwhat they need in their walletor purse. How do you respond?Do you try to be helpful or doyou sigh loudly and mutter in afrustrated way under yourbreath?Love is not jealous orboastful it is notarrogant or rudeLove is not jealous; thismeans that love is content withits lot in life. We know that lifeis full of inequalities, somepeople have more than theycould ever use, while othershave to struggle from day today just to exist. How do youreact when you see the successof others? Are you happy forthem or are you filled withanger thinking that it should beyou who has the success?Those who have pure loverejoice as much at thehappiness, the honor, and thecomfort of others, as they cando in their own.Love is not boastful; it doesnot do things for its ownrecognition. Love works behindthe scenes; it does not seek outthe spotlight.Love is not arrogant or rude,it is not puffed up. Love is notinflated with its own sense ofimportance, because loverealizes that all that we have isfrom God, and we deservenothing that we have received.Love does not insist on itsown way, it is not irritable orresentful,Love is an utter enemy toselfishness. Love does not seekits own praise, profit, orpleasure. In fact, love oftenneglects its own good for thesake of others. I did not knowthis at the time, but when mybrothers and I were going tocollege, my parents mortgagedtheir home to pay for oureducation, room, and board.They did not want us to workduring the school year;however we did maintain jobsduring the summer. When Ifound out this beautifulsacrifice that my parents hadgiven years later, they said thatit was their joy to be able to dothis for their loving children.Love wants to do things forothers; it is not something thatis forced. Ladies, what wouldyou do if your husband camehome on your anniversary andsaid to you, “Tradition tells methat I have to give you this gifton this day. We have beenmarried for twelve years andaccording to this I have to giveyou a gift of silk or linen. Sobecause of that; here is my gift— Happy Anniversary.” I thinkfor many people that would bethe most miserable anniversarythey could have. Love is not likethat, love always loves to give.Dear Dr.Van I mpeYou and Jack have beensuch an inspiration as Ihave seen you serve theLord faithfully through theyears. I love Dr. Rexella forher genuine love foreveryone (the love ofChrist shines through her),and her ability to teach usso much in so few words.Dictionaries should define“Lady” as Rexella VanImpe. She is theembodiment of the virtuouswoman of Proverbs 31.L.R.Love does not think evil, itdoes not rejoice at wrong butrejoices in the right.Love gives everyone thebenefit of the doubt. Lovenever supposes that a goodaction would have a badmotive. Love will never indulgesuspicion without solid proofs.If those suspicions prove to betrue, love does not rejoice inthe faults and failings ofanother. If you hear somethingbad about someone who is yourenemy, or whom you do notlike, do you rejoice? Do yousay, “It’s about time they weretaken down a peg or two”? Ordoes it make you sad to seeeven an enemy suffer?On the other hand, loverejoices in the right, and in thetruth. Those who are filled with

September-October 2007 | Perhaps Today | 23the love of God rejoice inspreading the Gospel, which isthe Truth, and rejoice to see thelives that are changed when aperson becomes a new creaturein Christ.Love bears all things,believes all things hopes allthings, endures all thingsSome translations say thatlove conceals all things, orcontains and keeps all things.This means that love nevermakes the sins, faults, orimperfections of any person thesubject of conversation. Lovecovers them as far as it can, andif love alones knows of thesefaults, love keeps thatknowledge locked away. Thishas to deal with gossip. All toooften we hear believers say, “Ineed to tell you all that is goingon with so-and-so so that youcan pray more intelligently.”Love does not do that, love justsays, “pray.”Love is ready to believe thebest of every person, and it willnot think evil of any onewithout absolute proof.When there is no place leftfor believing good of a person,love steps in with hope andanticipation of repentance andrestoration of a fallen brother.Love bears up under allpersecutions and mistreatmentsfrom enemies, and professedfriends. Love remains strongthrough all testing.So, faith, hope, love abide —these three — but thegreatest of these is love.To me this is the greatestmeasurement that any of uscould have today. “By this shallall men know that ye are mydisciples, if ye have love one toanother” (John 13:35).The best way that someoneknows that I follow Jesus isbecause I follow Him with thisaspect of my measurement.And that is how I love people.Do I really show love toeveryone? The Lord neverdistinguishes color or socialstatus in life. He associatedwith and had His arms outstretchedto the wealthy, but Healso moved with love amongthe very poor.He will delight himself in usif we follow in this aspect. Andof course, this is the ultimate inlove — 1 John 3:16 — “He laiddown his life for us...” Godloved us enough to die for us.There have been thosedown through history that havehad enough love to give theirlives for others — DavidLivingston left a lucrativebusiness in England to go toAfrica to give the Gospel, themessage of God’s love there. Itwas there that he gave his lifeas the first missionary to thatcontinent. Some of us willnever be called upon to die forothers, but sometimes it may bea more emphatic statement ofthe measurement our heart tolive a life of love for our Lord. Ifever we needed to show love inthis world, it is right now.After careful thought tothese three important aspectsof our Christian walk, I feel myheart whelm up in a quietprayer. Perhaps you feel it also.I would pray:“Dear Lord, forgive me forbeing so concerned about myown life that I forget aboutthose around me that need myhelp, my attention, and myfocus. Thank you for the faiththat you have given to me, andmay it never stop growing untilthe day I see all that I nowaccept by faith. Above all, maymy love for You, dear Lord, andfor others shine brightly as anevidence of the Holy Spiritliving in my heart.May the measurements ofmy heart be all that you wantthem to be.
