GlossaryAdBlueFuel tankSCR cat.BlueTec ® SCR diesel technologyBlueTec ® is the pioneering SCR dieseltechnology from Mercedes-Benz:a cost-effective and ecological solutionwhich helps your Vario to comply withthe EURO 4 emissions standard. TheSCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction)exhaust gas treatment process is theonly technology capable of ensuringthe necessary reduction in exhaustgas emissions while optimising engineoutput and fuel consumption at thesame time. The BlueTec ® system includesmodified engines with a higher peakpressure, which improves combustion andreduces the number of particulates.Further components of the system includea catalytic converter and an AdBluetank. AdBlue additive is simply filled upfrom a pump and carried in this separatetank on board. From here it is fedvia a metering unit into the exhaust gasfrom the engine and is converted by theheat into ammonia, which is requiredfor the chemical reaction in the catalyticconverter. The catalytic reaction hereconverts the nitrogen oxides into ecologicallyharmless substances – nitrogenand water.Anti-lock braking system (ABS)ABS prevents the wheels from lockingduring braking. Speed sensors contin -u ously monitor the speed of each wheel. If ABS detects that a wheel is at risk oflocking up, the brake pressure isreduced. When the danger of lockinghas been averted, the pressure isincreased again. ABS helps the driverto maintain steering control of thevan, even during emergency braking.All-wheel driveThe permanent all-wheel-drive variantsof the Vario deliver enhanced pullingpower and traction on difficult terrain.A selectable off-road ratio ensures greatertractive power on rough ground. Tofurther improve traction, both the differentialin the transfer case and the rearaxle differential can be locked.Differential lockThe differential lock ensures that thewheels of a driven axle turn at the samespeed. This prevents individual wheelsfrom spinning, which improves tractionand enhances safety, particularly onuneven or slippery surfaces, when pullingaway on a gradient or on roughterrain.Driver’s front airbagTo round off the safety equipment, afront airbag is available for the Vario’sdriver’s seat. It enhances driver safety, acting in partnership with the seat beltas an additional retention system.Note: Airbags in no way diminish theneed for occupants to fasten their seatbelts correctly at all times.44 Glossary

Load restraintDue to the dynamic forces which occurwhen transporting goods, an unsecuredload can start moving uncontrollablydue to slipping, tilting or rolling, thusincreasing the risk of accident andinjury. With their load-restraint systems andwide range of special equipment,Mercedes-Benz vans provide professionalload-securing solutions. The Varioincludes a range of different bulkheadvariants and optional load-securingrings.(Above left and centre)Load restraint is primarily achieved by placingloads against the front or rear bulkheads and thesides of the vehicles, and then filling any gaps.It is also possible to use aids such as braces, barsor partition nets or cargo barriers (direct loadrestraint).(Above right)Loads can be tied down to the floor using lashings. This increases friction between load and floor, preventingslippage (indirect load restraint)Safety steering columnThe safety steering column, installedin the Vario in conjunction with thedriver’s front airbag, helps to reducemovement of the steering column inthe event of a frontal collision. The aimis to minimise the risk of injury forthe Vario driver in a frontal collision. The various joints and telescopicsections allow the safety steering columnto yield in a frontal collision. In this way the movement of the steeringwheel is largely decoupled fromthe deformation of the front-end structureof the vehicle.Three-point seat belts with belttensionersCorrectly worn three-point seat beltsrestrain vehicle occupants in their seatsin the event of a frontal collision. Thesystem can be extended with a pyrotechnicbelt tensioner, which is availablein conjunction with the driver’s frontairbag. If the belt tensioner is activatedvia the airbag control unit, it tautens theseat belt in fractions of a second. Thismeans that the occupant takes part in thecollision-induced vehicle decelerationin longitudinal direction at an early stageand as a result is subjected to a lowerdynamic load. It can also reduce forwarddisplacement of the occupant, so thedanger of the head and body contactingthe steering wheel and/or interiorcomponents is reduced. If the driver’sfront airbag (special equipment) isselected, the driver’s seat is fitted withthe belt tensioner as standard.Note: Never drive without wearingyour seat belt!45
