The Company hasalready completed its two major expansion programmes andto maintain the leadership position, the Company is nowplanning for the 3rd phase expansion. Apart from Brownfieldexpansion, we are also launching ambitious Greenfieldprojects in India and Abroad. As you know, these are challenging tasks ahead, and the successof these projects depends on the dedication and hard work ofeach one of us and I am confident that each one of us willcontribute to the best of our abilities. While it is true that the expansion programmes will strengthenour business, it may also throw up new challenges if we arenot able to cope up with the increasing pressure of productionand productivity. There is no ready-made formula for successin today’s world. It is the ability of our people to producemore and spend less by economizing on every front whichwill be key to our survival and continued success. Time hasAug - Oct’ 09come to reinforce our efficiency as a dedicated and disciplinedtask force. Today the business scenario is quite challengingin view of prevailing global economic downturn. We haveseen sharp decline in our profitability last year, despiteincreased production of alumina and aluminium. Theuncertainties of the future are so vast that we cannot keepclinging to our old policies and practices to remain successful. We must learn from our past, be sensitive to the present andanticipate the adverse possibilities of the future. We have to redesign our corporate strategies to meet thechanging environment. We also need to display extremesensitivity to the development of the society, particularly inthe peripheral areas, as well as towards the preservation andimprovement of the environment. We are fortunate that we have been given such a strongplatform like Nalco to work for the cause of the country. Onthis auspicious occasion, let us resolve to continue”the taskof nation building.12
