CommunityFounded in 1958, Our lady of Good Counsel is located north of the District of Columbiain Montgomery County. Admission to the school is selective and based on previousschool records, teacher recommendations, and standardized testing. Students of allacademic levels find success in Good Counsel’s Advanced Placement, InternationalBaccalureate, honors and college preparatory programs. For highly motivated studentswith mild learning disabilities, the Ryken program offers a structured, small-grouplearning environment. Over 70% of the faculty hold advanced degrees. Students areacademically, ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse.Accreditations and Membershipse school is fully accredited by the State of Marylandand the Middle States Association of Secondary Schoolsand Colleges. Good Counsel has twice been named asa “Blue Ribbon School of Excellence” by the U.S.Department of Education. It is a member of the CollegeEntrance Examination Board, the National Associationfor College Admission Counseling, the National CatholicEducational Association, the Association for Supervisionand Curriculum Development and the Association ofIndependent Maryland Schools, and complies with theNACAC Statement of Principles of Good Practice.Curriculum and GraduationRequirementse academic year consists of a block schedule ofninety-minute class periods that meet on alternatedays throughout the year. For the2012-2013 academic year, Advanced Placement andInternational Baccalaureate courses are available as follows:Advanced PlacementBiology, Chemistry, US History, EuropeanHistory, Comparative Government and Politics,World History, Macroeconomics, Psychology,Physics, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics,Computer Science.International BaccalaureateHistory of Europe HL, Economic SL/HL, TwentiethCentury World History Topics, Art Studio SL/HL,Percussion, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, ChoralMusic, eatre, eory of Knowledge I and II(TOK)-IB requirement, Physics SL, Biology SL/HL,IB Psychology, PreCalculus/Calculus SL, Math HL,Math Studies, Economics SL/HL, World Religions.In 2012, 37 students received the IB Diplomaand 17 students received the IB Certificate.Combinied AP/IBEnglish Language and Composition, English Languageand Composition II HL, Spanish 5, 6, 7 SL/HL, Spanishseminar, French 5, 6, 7, 8 SL/HL and French seminar.INCOMING FRESHMAN/TRANSFER
e class of 2012 received offers of over $22 million in scholarships to colleges and universities. Of these totals, 53 wereIB students accepted into 44 honors Programs.
