This field was cultivated under <strong>USAID</strong>’s Agricultural Recovery Project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, <strong>Pakistan</strong>.(Photo by <strong>USAID</strong>/<strong>Pakistan</strong>, March 2011)<strong>Pakistan</strong> <strong>Oversight</strong> Program <strong>and</strong> Activities<strong>USAID</strong> <strong>OIG</strong> provides oversight of <strong>USAID</strong> activities in <strong>Pakistan</strong> through rigorous audit <strong>and</strong>investigative work <strong>and</strong> extensive outreach <strong>and</strong> coordination.To execute this program as effectively as possible, <strong>OIG</strong> has exp<strong>and</strong>ed its presence in <strong>Pakistan</strong> inrecent years. In the past, <strong>OIG</strong> provided oversight remotely using personnel based in Washington,D.C., <strong>and</strong> our regional office in the Philippines. In 2009, we established a permanent, on-thegroundpresence in Islamabad. As of <strong>June</strong> 30, 2012, <strong>OIG</strong>’s <strong>Pakistan</strong> Country Office had 14permanent staff supplemented by a staff member on temporary duty.<strong>OIG</strong> spent approximately $9.7 million to provide oversight for <strong>Pakistan</strong> from FY 2003 through thethird quarter of FY 2012. <strong>USAID</strong> <strong>OIG</strong> oversight activities there during the same period produced$128.5 million in returns to the U.S. Government.The U.S. Government reopened the <strong>USAID</strong> mission in Islamabad in 2002. From FY 2002 throughthe third quarter of FY 2012, <strong>USAID</strong> provided approximately $5.9 billion to address needs ineducation, health, economic growth, <strong>and</strong> good governance <strong>and</strong> to help with reconstruction <strong>and</strong>recovery after earthquakes, floods, <strong>and</strong> armed conflict.16 <strong>USAID</strong> <strong>OIG</strong> <strong>Afghanistan</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Pakistan</strong> <strong>Oversight</strong> <strong>Report</strong>
