President’s MessageIt’s hard to imagine that this year has nearly run its course. My time as president is quietly drawingto a close. As I get ready to turn the keys to the bus over to Dr. Bob Churney, I know the future ofthe West Coast District Dental Association is in very capable hands. The WCDDA’s 88th Annual Meeting at the St. Pete Hilton was a huge success. I need to especiallyrecognize the people who make this happen each and every year. Lissette Zuknick and her staffMelissa Dorsey and Shannon Murray, work tirelessly to make the arrangements each year. Dr. SteveRudy T. Liddell, D.M.D.Krist, our Program Committee Chairman, secured great speakers. The entire committee and the RedJacket Crew, were everywhere, helping people with every detail, from parking to finding classrooms. I received positivefeedback from attendees and vendors alike. Thank you to all who helped make this a reality. The other exciting news to pass on is that we have found a permanent home for the West Coast District Dental Association. The executive council was charged six years ago with trying to identify potential locations and properties that could serveas a permanent home for the association. With the economy down and the commercial property sector overbuilt, the perfectstorm of opportunity and price allowed us to purchase, with enough space to sublet. The location is 1112 and 1114 KyleWood Lane, Brandon, Fl, for those that want to do a Google maps or Mapquest search. The location is very convenient toI-75, the Crosstown, State Road 60 and just 10 minutes south of the intersection of I-4 and I-75.Thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving as your president. It has been an honor.Rudy LiddellWCDDA Cruise 2010If you did not attend the WCDDA cruise March4 th - 8 th , you missed a great time! Important InformationADA Receives Member Inquiries About Brican: The AmericanDental Association (ADA) has received inquiries from some membersabout their experiences with Brican America LLC. Members reportthey agreed to lease television/computer systems as part of an overalltransaction under which the members would also receive fees in returnfor running certain content on the leased television/computer system.Lawsuits filed in the U.S. District Court in the Southern District ofFlorida by Professional Solutions Financial Services (PSFS) againstBrican and a countersuit by Brican against PSFS were dismissed Feb.23rd. The court dismissed each of the parties’ claims against the other“with prejudice.”In the initial lawsuit, PSFS alleged that Brican breached a contractpursuant to which PSFS “agreed to purchase certain goods from Bricanfor the purpose of leasing or financing those goods to customers ofBrican,” and as a result, “entered into 1,672 leases with customersof Brican.” PSFS also alleged that Brican was obligated to but didnot reveal to PSFS the existence of any other agreements with thelessees [i.e., the doctors], and did not provide to PSFS the marketingagreements. PSFS further alleged that the value of the leases is morethan $38 million. Brican has maintained, among other things, that ifthere was any breach it was not material.Dentists who have questions should look over their contracts to reviewtheir rights and obligations under the terms of their agreements, andconsult with their attorney if they have specific questions. Retirement Planning 101How Much Do I Need to Save? Many Americans realize the importance of saving forretirement, but knowing exactly how much they need tosave is another issue altogether. One rule of thumb is thatretirees will need approximately 80% of their pre-retirementsalaries to maintain their lifestyles in retirement. However, depending on your own situation that number may be higheror lower. Fortunately, there are several factors that can helpyou work toward a retirement savings goal.LifestyleAnother important consideration is your desired retirementlifestyle. The answers can help you decide what additionalcosts your ideal retirement will require.InflationInflation is a vital component that has the potential to lowerthe value of your savings from year to year, significantlyreducing your purchasing power over time.Retirement AgeThe first factor to consider is the age at which you expect toretire. In reality, many people anticipate that they will retirelater than they actually do.Life ExpectancyYou should take into account your family history—howlong your relatives have lived and diseases that are commonin your family—as well as your own past and present healthissues. Also consider that life spans are becoming longerwith recent medical developments.Future Health-Care NeedsFactoring in higher costs for health care during retirementis vital; these costs could severely dip into your savings andeven result in your filing for bankruptcy if the need for careis prolonged.Social SecurityMany retirees believe that they can rely on their futureSocial Security benefits. However, this may not be true foryou. The Social Security system is under increasing strainas more baby boomers are retiring and fewer workers areavailable to pay their benefits. And the Total Is…After considering all these factors, you should have a betteridea of how much you need to save for retirement. Theimportant thing is to come up with a goal and then developa strategy to help reach it. You don’t want to spend yourretirement years wishing you had planned ahead when youhad the time. The sooner you start saving and investingto reach your goal, the closer you will be to realizing yourretirement dreams. This article was provided by Robert “Bobby” Stark, representative with Pioneer Financial Associates, Inc. The Last WordSteve Zuknick, DMDAhhhh, it’s that time of year again. It’s stifling hot outside. Leather car seats burn bare skin. Clothingclings, wet with perspiration. You actually start sweating while you’re showering. Summer in the stateof Florida, there is nothing quite like it. But the above mentioned nuisances actually do one wonderfulthing for us Floridians living on the West Coast of Florida…they chase off the often obtrusive migratingfowl commonly known as the “snow bird”. While this creature does have its positive impact on ourspecial section of the state, its exodus when the mercury approaches its maximum height in the summercreates one of my favorite benefits as a member of the WCDDA – the Summer Meeting at the Ritz-Carlton Beach Resort in Naples. A lack of filled rooms on the beach allows us the grand opportunity tomeet at a world class resort for a mind-boggling rate.I so look forward to acting like a tourist during that long weekend in August. It is still hot in Naples, don’t get me wrong, but no other weekend allows us west coasters a better opportunity to throw on the swim trunks, a pair ofsunglasses, and grab your chaise lounge of choice (at one of the two pools or on the beach) and spend a few hours looking at theback of your eyelids. It is easy to love the incredible service the staff at the Ritz provides, the outstanding dining and shoppingopportunities in Naples, and the unbelievable quality time spent with your families and colleagues. Add in the fact that this is afully functional dental meeting (complete with continuing education, an albeit cozy but encompassing exhibitor floor, and doingthe business of our association in the House of Delegates) and you have what amounts to the ideal summer weekend get-a-way.I have only touched the surface of how enjoyable this weekend is. Check out the enclosed brochure or visit www.wcdental.org,if you haven’t already. It really is the hidden gem of meetings you could attend. Come on down and join us, just keep it down, Ireally don’t want this information getting out! I don’t want any snow birds crowding me at the pool.ClassifiedsDENTIST/ASSOCIATE, PARTNERSHIP POTENTIAL:Sun City Center, FL.
