Introduction and Peer <strong>District</strong> ComparisonsAccording to <strong>the</strong> district Web site, <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Special Education’s mission in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mt</strong>.<strong>Diablo</strong> <strong>Unified</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> is to contribute to improving learning for students across <strong>the</strong>district by:• Implementing <strong>the</strong> Mandates <strong>of</strong> I.D.E.A. 1997• Aligning Special Education Renewal with Board Goals• Improving student outcomes• Improving specialized instruction• Identifying and assessing students with special needs• Aligning special education and general education curriculum/identifyingtarget issues and attitudes• Building bridges among special education participants• Clarifying roles and responsibilities• Identifying and implementing resources• Facilitating communication• Increasing <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> technology• Providing parent education• Celebrating success• Participating in <strong>the</strong> State Department’s Quality Assurance processIn a message from <strong>the</strong> superintendent dated June 2009, funding for public education isdiscussed. The message states that <strong>the</strong> reductions <strong>the</strong>y are experiencing now have notbeen made in California since <strong>the</strong> 1930s. At <strong>the</strong> June 2, 2009 board meeting, a number <strong>of</strong>reductions and eliminations totaling $29.3 million were made. In regards to specialeducation, reductions/eliminations include:• Fund costs <strong>of</strong> special education program using ARRA funds.• Eliminate 1.0 FTE senior secretary in Special Education/Student Services.• Transfer .39 FTE funding for an administrative secretary in Special Education/StudentServices to Medi‐Cal.MGT <strong>of</strong> America, Inc.
