Subsequently, Stateslike Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, lost a lot of theircrops in the post-monsoon period. Commodities like sugarcane, rice,potato and onion were affected.I am not aware of what exactly has happened when a point wasraised here by the hon. Member, Smt. Jaya Bachchan, that when shewas coming from Nasik to Mumbai, on the way she has seen twotruckloadsof onion was thrown away. Definitely, I would inquire into it.But, I am fully aware that in that particular belt, because of theexcessive rains, sizeable onion crop has been practically rotten; and,that is why, the farmer might have tried to remove that and dispose it ofsomewhere. That might be the reason, but, definitely I would go and tryto collect the in<strong>for</strong>mation from the State Government.Sir, the adverse climatic conditions have been coupled with thehigh prices of certain commodities in the international market. These twofactors taken together have considerably restricted the capacity of theGovernment to take remedial measures; and, at the same time, onaccount of the steps taken to promote growth and employment, theeconomy has continued to grow. The targeted scheme like NREGA hasalso helped to improve the income of the rural poor. And, all this has ledto increase demand of the essential commodities. Hon. Member, ShriSharad Joshi, has raised this particular subject. He said that because ofa number of Government schemes, now the purchasing power of therural areas has definitely been improved and that is why there is more
