Mr. Swaminathan spokeday before yesterday in Parliament and he mentioned about the findingsof his inter-Governmental Report how crop productivity and proteinyields in crops are falling dramatically. Is our research and developmentkeeping pace with how to adapt with this inevitable phenomena? Howto change cropping patterns which are more drought resistance, whichrequire less water and which are less dependent on chemical fertilizersto be able to sustain the plateau of productivity? Let me give you oneexample which is alarming. Do you know Minister that the world isgripped by bees' virus? Bees are dying all over the world and that thisdecline in the bee population is leading to this huge problem ofpollination. In case of China, we are resorting to hand pollination. Whatare we doing in terms of research and development to ensure that thisbee virus, which has afflicted the world, does not afflict India, which,even the most severest knock, we can receive in terms of trying to seekcrop productivity? So, there are challenges of a short-term nature.There are those which you can do in the immediate future to improvesupply side responses. But there are more important challenges whichyou have. They are challenges of demography, challenges of change inconsumer preferences as meat consumption puts greater pressure onthe food chain, changing pastoral habits and adaptation to the problemsof global warming and climate change. It may be cost-push inflation or it maybe any type of inflation where too much money is chasing too fewgoods and that is what we call the price rise. The price rise is visible inall spheres. I might point out that in my city, Mumbai, one square footof area in a flat in some parts of the city costs as much as Rs.1 lakh.The prices are rising in real estate; prices are rising of industrial goods.Today's morning paper says that the car prices are also going to see avery steep rise. But we are concerned here today with the price rise inessential commodities which concerns the common people.KSK/4.30/3F(Contd. by 3f/KSK)SHRI Y.P. TRIVEDI (CONTD): The common people are affectedbecause of the price rise of essential goods. What is the position? Ifyou look at the statistics -- I have got plenty of them, but I do notintend to rattle them because much has been spoken about thestatistics -- there is a wide gulf between the Wholesale Price Index, theConsumer Price Index and the actual price paid by the householder forbuying his commodities. Even the Consumer Price Index is also not oneindex, but there are so many. There is consumer price for industrialworkers, for agricultural labour, for non-manual labour and for urbanpeople.(THE VICE-CHAIRMAN, Prof. P.J.
