Creating a PatchApply Portamento or Legato to theSound (Solo/Porta)Solo/Portamentofig.06-047_50Let’s say you have the Legato Switch set to “ON,” and theLegato Retrigger set to “OFF.” When you try to sound a legato(by pressing a higher key while a lower key is held down), thepitch may sometimes not be able to rise all the way to theintended pitch (stopping instead at an intermediate pitch). Thiscan occur because the limit of pitch rise, as determined at thewave level, has been exceeded. Additionally, if differing upperpitch limits are used for the waves of a Patch that uses multipletones, it may stop being heard in MONO. When making largepitch changes, set the Legato Retrigger to “ON.”Portamento SwitchSpecifies whether the portamento effect will be applied (ON) or not(OFF).Value: OFF, ONFor details on these settings, refer to “How to Make PatchSettings” (p. 56).Mono/PolySpecifies whether the patch will play polyphonically (POLY) ormonophonically (MONO). The “MONO” setting is effective whenplaying a solo instrument patch such as sax or flute.ValueMONO: Only the last-played note will sound.POLY: Two or more notes can be played simultaneously.Legato Switch (Legato Switch)Legato Switch is valid when the Mono/Poly parameter is set to“MONO.” This setting specifies whether the Legato Switch will beused (ON) or not (OFF).With the Legato Switch parameter “ON,” pressing a key while continuingto press a previous key causes the note to change pitch to the pitch of themost recently pressed key, sounding all the while. This creates a smoothtransition between notes, which is effective when you wish to simulate thehammering-on and pulling-off techniques used by a guitarist.Value: OFF, ONLegato Retrigger (Legato Retrigger Switch)The Legato Retrigger is valid when the Mono/Poly parameter is set to“MONO” and the Legato Switch parameter is set to “ON.” The settingdetermines whether sounds are replayed (ON) or not (OFF) whenperforming legato. Normally you will leave this parameter “ON.” When“OFF,” when one key is held down and another key is then pressed, onlythe pitch changes, without the attack of the latter key being played. Setthis to “OFF” when performing wind and string phrases or when usingmodulation with the mono synth keyboard sound.Value: OFF, ONPortamentoPortamento is an effect which smoothly changes the pitch fromthe first-played key to the next-played key. By applyingportamento when the Mono/Poly parameter is “MONO,” youcan simulate slide performance techniques on a violin or similarinstrument.Portamento ModeSpecifies the performance conditions for which portamento will beapplied.ValueNORMAL:LEGATO:Portamento TypePortamento will always be applied.Portamento will be applied only when you playlegato (i.e., when you press the next key beforereleasing the previous key).Specifies the type of portamento effect.ValueRATE:TIME:The time it takes will depend on the distancebetween the two pitches. The time it takes will be constant, regardless of howfar apart in pitch the notes are.77
