Expanding the MemoryThe Fantom-X comes with 32 MB of memory into which audiosamples can be loaded. However, in some cases, 32 MB of memorywill be insufficient for loading large amounts of data. In such a case,you will have to add separately sold memory (DIMM). Memory canbe expanded up to 64/128/256/512 MB.Before expanding the memory, consult with your retailer, the nearest<strong>Roland</strong> Service Center, or an authorized <strong>Roland</strong> distributor.Precautions for ExpandingMemory901• To avoid the risk of damage to internal components that can becaused by static electricity, please carefully observe thefollowing whenever you handle the board.1• Before you touch the board, always first grasp a metal object(such as a water pipe), so you are sure that any static electricityyou might have been carrying has been discharged.2 • When handling the board, grasp it only by its edges. Avoidtouching any of the electronic components or connectors.5 • Save the bag in which the board was originally shipped, andput the board back into it whenever you need to store ortransport it.• Use a Phillips screwdriver that is suitable for the size of thescrew (a number 2 screwdriver, Fantom-X6/X7 only). If anunsuitable screwdriver is used, the head of the screw may bestripped.• To remove a screw, rotate the screwdriver counter-clockwise.To tighten the screws, rotate the screwdriver clockwise.How to Expand the MemoryInstall the memory module after removing the bottom panel cover.1. Before expanding the memory, turn off the power of theFantom-X and all connected devices, and disconnect allcables, including the Power cable, from the Fantom-X.2. From the Fantom-X, remove only the screws shown in thefollowing diagram, and detach the cover. On the Fantom-X6/X7, the cover is located on the bottom panel. On theFantom-X8, it is located on the front panel. From theFantom-X, remove only the screws shown in the followingdiagram, and detach the cover.* A hex wrench is included with the Fantom-X8. When removingscrews, you must use this hex wrench.fig.30-002.eFantom-X6/X7 : bottomScrews to be removedfig.30-003.eFantom-X8 : FrontScrews to be removedloosentighten• Be careful that the screws you remove do not drop into theinterior of the Fantom-X.• Be careful not to cut your hand on the edge of the cover or theopening edge while removing the cover.• Do not touch any of the printed circuit pathways or connectionterminals.• Never use excessive force when installing a circuit board. If it doesn’tfit properly on the first attempt, remove the board and try again.• When circuit board installation is complete, double-check yourwork.• Always turn the unit off and unplug the power cord beforeattempting installation of the memory DIMM board.• Install only the specified memory DIMM board. Remove onlythe specified screws.• When turning the unit upside-down, get a bunch of newspapersor magazines, and place them under the four corners or at bothends to prevent damage to the buttons and controls. Also, youshould try to orient the unit so no buttons or controls getdamaged.• When turning the unit upside-down, handle with care to avoiddropping it, or allowing it to fall or tip over.• Do not leave the bottom cover removed. After installation of thememory module is complete, be sure to replace the cover.fig.31-0023.
