T10/1236-D Revision 20 18 July 2001ForewordThis foreword is not part of American National Standard NCITS.351:200x.The SCSI command set is designed to provide efficient peer-to-peer operation of SCSI devices (disks, tapes, printers, etc.) by an operating system. The SCSI command set assumes an underlying command-responseprotocol.The SCSI command set provides multiple operating systems concurrent control over one or more SCSI devices. However, proper coordination of activities between the multiple operating systems is critical to avoid datacorruption. Commands that assist with coordination between multiple operating systems are described in thisstandard. However, details of the coordination are beyond the scope of the SCSI command set. This standard defines the device model for all SCSI devices. This standard defines the SCSI commands that arebasic to every device model and the SCSI commands that may apply to any device model. The processor device model is defined in this standard. Some target SCSI devices may implement an initiatorsubset of the processor device model to support the Asynchronous Event Reporting capability defined in theSCSI-3 Architecture Model. With any technical document there may arise questions of interpretation as new products are implemented. NCITShas established procedures to issue technical opinions concerning the standards developed by NCITS. Theseprocedures may result in SCSI Technical Information Bulletins being published by NCITS.These Bulletins, while reflecting the opinion of the Technical Committee that developed the standard, are intendedsolely as supplementary information to other users of the standard. This standard, ANSI NCITS.351:200x, asapproved through the publication and voting procedures of the American National Standards Institute, is not alteredby these bulletins. Any subsequent revision to this standard may or may not reflect the contents of these TechnicalInformation Bulletins.Current NCITS practice is to make Technical Information Bulletins available through:Global EngineeringTelephone: 303-792-2181 or15 Inverness Way East 800-854-7179Englewood, CO 80112-5704 Facsimile: 303-792-2192Requests for interpretation, suggestions for improvement and addenda, or defect reports are welcome. Theyshould be sent to the NCITS Secretariat, National Committee for Information Technology Standards, InformationTechnology Institute, 1250 Eye Street, NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20005-3922.This standard was processed and approved for submittal to ANSI by the National Committee for InformationTechnology Standards (NCITS). Committee approval of the standard does not necessarily imply that all committeemembers voted for approval. At the time of it approved this standard, NCITS had the following members:xivdpANS SCSI Primary Commands - 2 (SPC-2)
