Current Trends in Biotechnology and PharmacyVol. 5 (2) 1157-1162 April 2011. ISSN 0973-8916 (Print), 2230-7303 (Online)1161growth of the larvae. 2% gly twice a day treatmentstarted from the 2 nd day of V th instar larvae hasfound to have maximum silk gland growth. Onthe other hand, high growth of the larvae wasfound to have higher cocoon weight as found incase of 2% gly once a day treatment from the 1 stday treatment of the V th instar larvae. However, the higher silk gland growth with 2% gly twice aday has found to have maximum shell weight. Therefore, it contributes to the low pupa growth. In contrast, maximum pupa growth was observedwith minimal larvae and gland growth with 2%gly once a day treatment of the 1 st day of V thinstars larvae. But in such case maximum cocoonweight was noticed. Therefore, it is clear thatsilk gland and larval growth has not positiverelation with pupa weight and shell weight. It ishere to mention that both the pupa and shell onthe raw products of the sericulture have differentapplications. Therefore, the exact biochemical orphysiological role for the L-gly supplementationwith different concentrations from the day 1 or 2of the V th instar of B. mori larvae is a matter offuture investigation.ConclusionIt can be concluded form the presentstudy that the maximum silk gland protein orcocoon or shell production with 2% gly smearedmulberry leaves with twice a day supplementationfrom the 2 nd day or 2% gly once a day or 2% glytwice a day from the 2 nd day of the V th instar, respectively, are required. The abovephenomenon clearly indicates that gly havespecific effect on the growth of the larvae, gland, pupa and cocoon production in the Nistari varietyof the silk worm B. Mori.AcknowledgementsThis study was a project work undertaken by BRP for the partial fulfillment of MSc inZoology at Utkal University.
